Hi Friends and welcome to my Valentine's Day special where we'll be taking a look at Hollywood's (relatively) new-found obsession with interracial relationships! What do you guys think of this trend??
I loved the couple in the new version of Vampire Academy. Which also was a race-swap from the books, but worked very well. I do agree that it is often a POC in the female role. I would say a notable exception is the Handmaid's tale. [edit: badly worded at first]
This was really good! As a Black gay man, I get very frustrated by the lack of loving relationships between Black men in media. Growing up the only queer representation I had was whatever I could sneak and watch on Logo, and it's sad that 20+ years later queer representation is still as white as ever 😩. Thanks for this!
I wish I had your makeup talent. You really pull it off. :D And don't worry. I love hearing you speak. You have become my "podcast" on car journeys on the way home. Even when I vehemently disagree. xD
Amazing amazing video Jeanne!! I had to watch it twice to make sure I took everything in. Your in depth discussion on interracial relationships in Hollywood is spot on in every way. What you say about non-white women desiring a white man and that often being a very powerful white man is detailed, rigorous and true. I myself had and probably still have a blind spots when it come to romantic and race politics, so thank you Jeanne for this video and discussion. It make me and others more aware and self-aware of these types of representations and the politics behind them. This video is so important because it makes more white people aware of these issues and opens a discourse about it, so we can be aware of it and become better people, more open minded and more considerate of others. I just want to say Jeanne that like you I think love is a wonderful and amazing thing. And to me nothing else matters, just that the love is true and no one is being harmed. Thank you again Jeanne, looking forward to the next video, hope your having a great day too 😊😊
Correction: in Nimona the film, Ballister and Ambrosius were changed from both being White in the Nimona comics to being the races of their actors of color: Riz Ahmed is British-Pakistani and Eugene Lee Yang is Korean. And while Elemental is comprised of fantasy races, the actors playing Ember (Leah Lewis) and Wade (Mamoudou Athie) are Chinese and Mauritanian respectively.
Great video and very true yet seeing lots of women of color with only white guys especially Latinas and Asian women. Not enough Latino or Asian men as love interests. Even if theirs a Latino man its very light skinned..
Thank you, and yes, great observation! Unfortunately there's a lot of crossover with the ever-increasing colourism in Hollywood as well - perhaps something to tackle in another video...
Im glad, you mentioned the studies about w. audiences' "comfort" bec. I always wondered, why Disney has consistently refused to pair their TWO dsb princesses with a dsb prince. Now, I know.
Interracial relationships are not a phenomenon it’s just the product of exposure to other cultures. My hubby is Mexican and I don’t see us represented in media. If we do see a Black woman with someone of a diff race they’re usually White from what I’ve seen.
I also think Hollyweird wants to make sure wyt women always have a job. They are the main characters of almost every movie. Soon as you turn on a streaming service, the main characters are usually wyt unless you choose a specific movie genre. And wyt actresses are often put with different races of men too. The wyt Elite that run Hollywood make sure both wyt men and wyt women have a job
To add with LGBTQ+ interracial relationships here in the US alot more queer relationships are interracial then hetero relationships which i found when i did some research about it
I think its interesting white women/black men parinings are more common in media around the same time the ozone is rapidly deteriorating from green house gases?
Im pretty sure that IR relationship are a necessity to get a movie or tvshow with a BIPOC lead funded. I feel, like the idea is that w. people wont tune in to a story, where they dont see themselves represented as desirable romantically.
Me as a black man I don't have a problem with interracial dating. I just don't like the agenda behind it why are they pushing it harder than ever like LGBT.
This will offend many, but must be pointed out. It's psychological manipulation, hypocrisy and contradiction all rolled into one. I personally stay away from all popular entertainment that pushes interracial agendas.
Justice for the (unlucky) biracial kids raised by a w. mother!!! They need to see their experience represented on screen!!! 😂 Edit: More seriously, thank you for your video, you really underlined all the issues. I learned a lot!c
I been saying this for some time, and they are really trying to marry our bl women to white men at a higher rate, my theory is that if we ever get reperations it will go right back to white.
How did something progressive bcome regressive. Human beings are weird. If there were no interracial relationships in media people would complain about. Since there were "too many" people in interracial relationships. People are complaining about it. Lord have mercy. We cant make anyone happy at all. If p I wanted to make a story about interracial relationship then i should. If people cry about it then cry.
I feel as though you completely missed the point. It’s not the mere fact that interracial relationships are being portrayed, it is the way in which they are being done. Most POC love interests are in relationships with White people, which can be viewed as an extension of White supremacy. In other words, there is no diversity in the pairings, and each pair must include a White individual. This eliminates the possibility to explore the nuances of relationships that do not include White people. It also maintains White individual’s place in media, since now that there is “diversity,” film producers, writers, etc, do not have to decenter White stories and White characters.

I feel what you're saying SO MUCH - we need more POC x POC couples on screen, interracially or not!

Well, to be fair, Fellow Travelers had to black, gay men in the surporting roles of the best tv series last year
Baby steps are being taken, but Hollywood still has a lot of work to do when it comes to LGBTQ representation (especially for POC)!
I wish I had your makeup talent. You really pull it off. :D And don't worry. I love hearing you speak. You have become my "podcast" on car journeys on the way home. Even when I vehemently disagree. xD
Aww thank you so much, that's so nice to hear! 😊

Yep, it's very... interesting... Although others have also pointed out other compelling reasons behind this trend!

Ambrosious and Ballister (and technically Wade and Ember) belong in category two, otherwise great video!
