As someone who's 30 now and was aged 6-9 living in London when this was open back in 1996-9, I remember going there as a child thinking it was like entering into some kind of futuristic spaceship with that epic staircase, rides & arcade machines... Thank you for making this great documentary, it takes me back in time! 🚀🎮🤖
It's like you took the words right out of my head. This is what I remember most too from the first time. I went back quite a few times. It was my most favourite place ever!
Went to London in 2001 and was excited for Sega World (having read about it in magazines) due to being a big Sega fan... There was an arcade at the same spot iirc but nothing was left pretty much. Massive bummer. There are/were exactly zero arcades around me growing up. Only experience of them was trips to Denmark and Gothenburg. Ironically I now own two arcade machines in a third floor apartment (sitting right next to my Sega Blast City rn). I guess never getting to visit one/Sega World did a number on me.😛
Edit: seen that pin before (at auction). Can't remember if it was on Ebay or Tradera. Tried to buy it but didn't want to spend too much on a pin as a reminder of a place I never visited so gave it up. Didn't end up being THAT expensive (?), obviously that's subjective, but still too much for me to spend on it. I believe it was about £40.
Edit 2: those transformer R360... Oh shit I didn't realize there were still arcade machines like this being made (I miss Sega and their arcade innovations bleeding over to consoles). My gaming dream would be an R360 with modern flying/jet- or space fighting games on a modern screen (or possibly even VR). Just imagine that.

I was 8, it was very good. The escalators, the pepsi drop, the michael jackson virtual reality, all very memorable and futuristic even over 20 years later

I believe they changed it to free entry and paid arcade games at some point towards the end
I was 14 at the time and living in Tampa, FL. My family and I went to London for the millennium change. We stayed at a hotel in Piccadilly Circus and were having an awesome time seeing the city. Then I remember my brother pointing at the wall while we rode the escalator from the subway. “SEGA WORLD” was right by our hotel! My brother and I couldn’t believe it, we asked for money from our parents and ran to SEGA World. I remember it like it was yesterday, at the top of the rocket escalator was an epic Sonic statue and the first time I saw a DDR arcade. I had the best memories at SEGA World. We spent days going to back to every floor. I remember playing the Sonic fighting game and playing Beatmania for the first time. I really appreciate you making this video, awesome memories!
I love how the SegaSonic machine in London wasn't even translated lol.
SegaSonic the Hedgehog was never translated, unfortunately. There does exist some English text and Robotnik sprites resembling his appearance from the Archie Comics and SatAM are in the game, but are never used, hinting that Sega planned to translate the game for American audiences.

I went to Segaworld London as a kid when I was about 8 years old! It's always been this weird blurry memory that I could see clearly in my mind by the logic of walking around and where everything was was a blur. For YEARS I've been looking for a comprehensive look at the inside! Thank you so much. I think my brain can finally calm down!

we had gameworks here!! it didn't have the indoor haunted house kinda thing, but it had a lot of little rides and even had sonic out for birthday parties. there are a few left, i think there's one in las vegas still

With the coin crushing, in America, penny's get crushed and imprinted, but I've never seen a videogame character printed on a coin before!
I was one of those people who were fortunate enough to attend Segaworld back in 1998. This came courtesy of my dad who did the lighting for the park.
I don't recall going on the rides, but that was probably down to the waiting times. And to my 8 year old mind, they didn't look that appealing. I remember going on the arcade machines, some of which were quite defective but I got a ton of memories.
But the thing that I remember the most about Segaworld was the merchandise. I had the yellow and black wallet for several years and at one point, my dad had a Segaworld t-shirt in large size that he would often let me use.
When I visited Trocadero years later, I was saddened to see how far a great attraction had fallen and seeing the rocket escalator cordoned off by the vending machine. By the time the Troc was in its twilight years, it was even worse, tacky souvenir shops had pretty much taken over.
Also, I agree that bringing another Segaworld back, so to speak would be good in essence but I fear that with Vegas Soho just a stone's throw away (or even HOG in Croydon), the park may not have the same wow factor as it formerly did and in such a competitive location as well.
Sorry for the long post but thanks for making such an informative history on one of my beloved childhood sights.
I live in basildon Essex and we used to have a Sega park in our town centre. I was in there every weekend It was my favourite place to go
Me too ! Unfortunately it was way before my time as I was around 5 ? When it closed
I went there a couple of times in the Mid to Late 2000s at Eastgate shopping centre, place was practically near dead by that point.
I visited SegaWorld London with my family as an American tourist in 1998 and vividly remember the Beast in Darkness attraction. There were big screens set up throughout the place where they'd show video of "the beast" appearing and roaring at you, so that it looked as if he really was emerging from some hidden cavern or passage. As I recall, you eventually got to a point where you were put into dark-ride-style carts instead of being on foot, but as I was eight years old at the time, I found all the cheesy horror so terrifying that I had to be escorted out by park staff through an emergency exit before we actually got to that point.

I went to Sega World when I was around 10 or 11. Only went once, which was a bit of a shame in itself, but I do remember having fun. And failing miserably at SegaSonic XD

i went on beast in darkness i really young so i may get stuff wrong but i remember the end part u get on a train i rember at one point somone yell the light kill the beast and seen light coming throw and then hereing the beast yelling I also remember both the sonic the fighters and sega sonic been there
I remember about a year ago during a science lesson my teacher showed us this old science tv show for kids on youtube and it actually had some footage from sega world. At the time I didn't recognise it so I wasn't paying that much attention but now watching this I actually recognise some of the attractions for the video. It was about magnets and how people can use electric magnets for certain objects and used the pepsi drop ride as an example. If you want to find it I know it was about a woman who dropped a bunch of metal objects on the floor and explains to the viewer that she needs a magnet to use it. It also shows some kids in this weird secret base asking her how magnets work but that's all I can really remember because unfortunately I forgot the name but if you can find a show with a lady explaining to kids about science your on the right track.
It was called Science in Action! I remember my science teacher playing it for us to teach about magnets and evolution. I might be able to find it.

Hey, I visited sega world with my dad for my birthday. Can't remember the year but its one of my fondest childhood memories. I absolutely loved it but I was a kid and a fanatic sega fan. I visited the trocadero in the mid 2000s and was disappointed to find it had closed. Thank you so much for making this video.

That pricing policy is just disgusting.
If you charge to enter, the big attractions inside should be free. At least the tried to fix it, but all the ways they tried, according to your video, just seemed half baked as well.
No, the reviewers who didn't bother doing their jobs properly were disgusting. All the arcade games were free and you got 1 go of each of the rides free. It was actually great value for money as long as you stayed all day so could play much more than the £12 ticket's worth.
Yea I wasn’t allowed to go because of the entry fee. Eventual my mum relented and I went with my sister. When we got there they had just changed the entry fee. So had more money to play more games

Only went once to England as a kid and of course it was to London. My dad surprised me with a visit to Sega World London. I didn't even knew that it existed! Boy was I amazed! The only sad part about it that most of the things I dad told me "were too expensive", queue too long or the arcade/ride was out of service. Still a fun experience. I got a few little trinkets from there, but nothing major. Always had Ninteno console's and my only Sega console was a Game Gear which I played hours and hours on. Sonic 1 & 2 on Game Gear was my life!

grew up in london in the 70's till the mid 90's and was a regular in all the arcades in london throughout all the years, marbles in marble arch, oxford st, leicester square, las vegas, warren street arcade etc, played in the first snk king of fighters 94 tournament in tottenham court road also street fighter 2 tournament in trocadero, sega world was the only arcade that i didnt visited, lol
Nice video, I really wanted to know more about this place after seeing a picture of Sonic during a car journey to London. I recently found out that my mother was lucky enough to visit Segaworld London when it was open in the late 90s. Had a great experience there.
Thank you, this was really nostalgic. I remember going as a kid and loving it. I remember going up the escalator, and even remember that underground billboard. I still have a metal coin token and a "Best Gunner" badge from the Space Mission VR ride.
I used to go to the arcade at troc ages in the late 2000's early 2010's, had no idea it used to be a sega world.... now a lot of the decor makes sense to me!
Just watched your great video (a bit late to the party I know) but I was very lucky to be able to visit a number of times in my younger years, I went when I was around 9 with some friends for a birthday party and the place was just something else, for a 9 year old gaming nut who loved Sega, you just couldn’t beat it!

I remember I visited Sega world several times in 2000, Sonic’s statue on the building entrance was missing, but all the floors were accessible.
I visited it again in 2004 but only half of the building was opened.
Finally I visited it in 2013 with my wife with only two floors are opened to the public, it was sadly shutdown after that.
I do have recorded footage for my visit in the year 2000, but I have to track down our old cam-recorder as well as the tapes and learn how to convert them digitally.
But I really have fond memories to that place.
Sad it was gone.

ted I would love too, my parents located the cam-recorder but didn’t find the tapes, according to them, they were placed in a box and then taken to one of the storage areas in their home a while after I moved out. Unfortunately the boxes weren’t labeled.
I have to go treasure hunting for them on my next visit.

Was looking forward to this video for a while now, and it didn't disappoint! Some great footage, and information! Got me in the feels seeing that urban explorers footage aswell knowing that all those memories are completely erased :( I remember visiting a while back and it still had the escalator, but like you said most of the floors were shut off, and there were just a couple of shops on the ground and maybe a couple of arcade machines dotted around. It's such a shame it's all completely gone.

I was just thinking about Sega World London recently and wondered if there were any videos about it and low and behold I come across you’re one dude. So yes I had the pleasure of going there back in January 1997, I was 14 and it was just the coolest thing ever at that time. We’d planned to go in advance so I made sure I had plenty of pocket money saved up before we went. Can’t recall if we paid to enter but the arcade machines definitely required money so I had about £40 on me just for the games. Didn’t do any of the rides, didn’t shop in the store and we got McDonald’s from somewhere else in London. We went there purely for the games and that was it. I went with my older brother and some of his friends and again it was just an amazing day. To be surrounded by arcades in such a colourful environment was a real treat and I remember it very fondly. I did go back there a few times but that was when Sega were no longer apart of it. A nicely presented video man 👌

i went to Sega World London in March of 2000. The web says it closed in September of 1999, but that's not entirely accurate. It was pretty empty when I went but that epic escalator was still working, and most of the park was still functioning. I don't think the rides were still going, but the arcade and carnival stuff still was. Don't recall if McDonald's was still open. Anyway, it sure was a magical day for me, as I was visiting London from Chicago. I thought it was epic in March of 2000, can only imagine how great it woulda been in 1997-98. Thanks for the cool video, was fun to revisit Sega World London!
The sega sonic arcade game and r360 aeroplane game were both at Hamlies toys shop in London in the early nineties. They were in the downstairs arcade bit.
I bet these are the exact same 2 machines that were probably moved to segaworld.
I wonder if there is any footage of hamleys back then.
Untill now i thought the sonic machine had only appeared there in the UK.

We went when the cabs were on freeplay and it was just unbelievable, a proper dreamworld. All of the branding, the lights, the atmosphere were just unreal and I remember the feeling of sheer excitement it gave me. I remember going back to the Trocadero in the following years and being increasingly disappointed with the state of it. Until now, Segaworld London lived only in my memory! This was a proper nostalgia trip of a video, great work - also, amused me to see the janky photo I took of the 'Sega Store' pop up in it! I wish I could remember more about it, but I was probably 7 or 8 when I took that!
I went Sega World Twice as a kid in 1996 and then again in the summer holidays 1999 when it was on the way out and changing back into Funland and was a lot smaller by that point. Memories are fuzzy but I do remember really enjoying and loved seeing Sonic plastered everywhere and when I went in 99 I do remember playing Crazy Taxi there for the first time. Jo Guest in the 90s😍😍😍😍 that is all.

Really fascinating and well put together video man - I was lucky enough to visit the park shortly after it opened, the main thing I remember is playing Virtua Fighter 3 and Sonic the Fighters the first time - my memories of the rides are very hazy, but I seem to remember the Aqua Planet one made me feel slightly queasy :P I definitely still have a photo of me and the family in front of that Sonic statue at the entrance somewhere at my parent's house...must try and dig that up. I'm also fairly certain I might have some of the items they sold at the shop...must have a good dig around sometime...but at any rate, fantastic job getting all this footage and info together. This is the sort of thing that really should be preserved

I went to meet a bunch of people online in the UK around 2010, and we decided on going to the arcades there at the time, along with going paintballing and such.
Got to play that Fist of the North Star arcade game where you punch the panels. Still have the photos of the cabinets there. Really good times.
I was lucky enough to visit it twice, the first time was when the machines were on free play. It was an amazing experience, me and my brother played every game we possibly could - I remember particularly loving Virtua Fighter 3 as I had seen the Gamesmaster tv show Tetsujin challenge not long before.
We went on some of the rides. I remember House of Grandish a bit different!y to how you described it. You sat looking at a blank screen (which flashed occasionally and I believe showed some images) with a pair of very high quality headphones on. You could hear monsters walking around with chains and talking until it felt like they were right behind you speaking into your ear, saying "I want to suck your blood!" and then would drink one of the "guest's" blood complete with straw slurping sounds. Haha. It was pretty bad but kind of funny.
Sadly don't have any videos or pictures though, just great memories
I also remember going several times as a kid - and it was all free to play. Even the rides - I remember literally going on one 3d simulator ride - Aqua Planet - over and over again. As a little kid just going around and around. Such good memories
Ahh, Sega World Bournemouth. I remember it well. Nowadays the location is just a generic arcade, but back then, to my 8-year old self, it was a place of wonder. :D

Great run down Badnik - worked for some of the corporations mentioned. We evaluated the SEGA World and Japanese versions over the years. The story of some of the rides is interesting. Including the day the Royals visited the site - nice trip down memory lane.
There was also a Sega Zone in Catford, London, which had Killer Instinct 2 in 96 and Plasma Sword a few years later. No photos unfortunately.
Stumbled upon this video whilst looking for info on what the trocadero looks like now. Glad I did. It brings back memories as I used to work in Sega world back in 1997. I still have a ticket that I purchased before applying to work there .
Around mid 90s I visited London, unfortunately I did not go to Sega World. I do remember going at the time the BEST Toy shop in the world, Hamelys. And if my memory serves my right, in the basement area of the store there was a few arcade machines and it had SegaSonic which was my first and only time to play on the actual arcade. If anyone here knows any information about this, please let me and Badnik Mechanic know.
Holy cow that's awsome thanks for going into detail on this it looks awsome in terms of footage wish I found out about this sooner the only real reason alone that I knew about this was from the merch that I've seen people review clearly must be quite expensive merchandise annyways though like mentioned earlier I love videos like this keep it up please I love these types of videos

I remember going to my local Sega Park in Harlow a few times, it wasn’t big as London’s as it had a few arcade units in the days before it closed.

I was so fortunate to have worked there. Best days in my life. We used to stay behind after closing time and play for hours. I still have my yellow sonic T-shirt, my blue combat trousers and a waistcoat. And a grey sonic jumper. Great memories there and many friends

that wasn’t very comum to be honest. Maybe when the arcade initially open. On the later days not really. Sonic made the most appearances but to be fare they should have done more often once a week at least.
The one I remember he most and I did wear a few times was the Beast in the Darkness. Love it chasing people out of the ride. So much fun 😂

Amazing! I knew Ted had to be involved as his article is so comprehensive, but this really is a great look at Segaworld.
I was fortunate enough to visit, I remember being in awe at the golden sonic statue at the front, the dizzying escalator that bought back a ton of memories of the pictures of it in the video. the part I remember the most was the sonic the fighters/ sonic Sega arcade game, as that was the first time I sae that game and was infuriated at how difficult Sega sonic the hedgehog was to control as it was on a mouse pad style of ball i think. but over all loved the video and it bought a few memories back almost like i was back there again , it was a great time seeing it in person and I never realised how fortunate I was to visit it, until now :)
The closest thing we got in Florida was a Sega section in EPCOT (Innoventions).

Thank you for making this video! I went there back in 1997 for a friends birthday party. Sadly I have no photos or anything, just a blurry mind of it (I was 11!) and bought no merchandise (don’t even remember going into the gift shop) but I know had great fun on the main rides, (especially Aqua Planet) but then when you’re younger they always seem better than as a adult, as you don’t overthink it and ruin the magic! The one ride I never tried and I wish so much I did was the R-360... When I saw it when playing Segagaga back in 2003 remembered seeing it and wishing I got that one chance to play the real one again. But oh well! Only other one I sent to was the Bournemouth one, I have a few photos of that from when I went in 2005, (it was still branded as a SEGA Park then) it had a load of MushiKing arcade cabs in that I spent a lot of money on to get the cards lol. I do feel sorry for SEGA as they always tried to go over the top and do something different and it hardly ever paid off for them. I’m glad at least their arcades and UFO catchers still do well in Japan though. They’re still going to stay in my childhood, that’s for sure! :) Thanks again for the video, look forward to your next! :D

I have always had a great fascination with this place, wish I was around when it was still open, being born in 1999 missed out on this event, I do in fact own that pin badge, which is the plastic coloured version and a coin from the park.
Overwhelming nostalgia. I been to sega world for a couple of times in the 90s and I loved it. by the time I moved to London sadly it was closed down and reopened as funland. I still have fond memories of both sega world and funland until their demise in 2011😞

FYI you never mentioned anything about the Dodgems (Bumper-Cars) that replaced the F1 car and Harrier. I'm pretty sure it was on the Race Track floor anyway, could have been the top floor once they removed the entry barriers. But they had wireless cars and some sort of special metal flooring. I think it was one of the first of it's kind. Once Sega World closed it was taken apart and transferred to the Namco Arcade across the River not far away in South Bank next to Sea World and the London Dungeon, where it was reconstructed but it was a smaller arena for the Bumper Cars. As far as I'm aware it is still there. Along with some of the old machines from Sega World 😉😊
I was there! I visited Sega World London as a kid in 1996. Great memories.
Was the best place ever as a child, enjoyed going to eat at planet hollywood afterwards. I went on the michael jackson ride, which wasn't very good but was unique, I have a lot of memories of this place. I remember going to separate imax 3d cinema section, that was in the trocadero also. That was also great. I loved sega world, was the best place to visit in London by far. Shame it's gone London needs something like it again.

The sonic mascot suit looks like it’s head was too big
It seems tilted up really far and I bet makes it really hard for the performer to see since I bet they would look out of them

There tends to be a problem with similar Sonic costumes. The eyes are often positioned above the performer's eyes, and that's why so many Sonic mascots appear to be looking downward. This suit had the opposite problem.

i went to sega world london with my family when i was 11 or 12. it was cool!
