Went here in 1996, as a 7 year old I was absolutely blown away! Remember vividly playing Sonic Championship, a 3d fighting game and being blown away by the 3d graphics. I’ll have to ask my parents what they thought about the place.

Sega world was incredible as teenager growing up in London i would visit almost every weekend. It was one of the most fun places you could go as a Sega fan. There were Sega themed rides, restaurants and arcades, huge amount of Sega merchandise, a Sega Saturn dedicated store. Having visited Tokyo Club Sega, in comparison to Sega World there still is nothing like it to this day to compare to the scale and scope of how huge Sega World was. Sega spent a lot of money on it

I went to GB for a 2 week student exchange in around 1996 and we went to London for 1 day to visit the usual, like Madame Tussauds and in the offtime i and some classmates stumbled across this gem. I have never seen something like this in my life before and after that. The arcades blew my mind since these were, if present in germany at all, only 18+ and i was a complete gamer and computer nerd. The image of the entrance escalator tunnel with Spice Girls Pepsi commercials burned into my brain, since i just estimated a sega themed shopping mall. The concept of arcades was unknown to me back then. I think i blew all my money in under an hour but i still have the fondest memorys on this day. A shame they are gone, i always wanted to visit it again. Guess i have to visit Japan then, but it is not the same.

I missed Sega World here unfortunately, my teen days of visiting the Trocadero started in late 2001. I am though very thankful I got to experience Funland in all its glory before it down sized. I last visited Funland in I want to say 2009 and whilst we still had fun it was a shell of its former self.
I can remember a friend and I not being able to find our way out of Funland for a good 45 minutes once when it had all the floors open. We were up and down the rocket escalators and just couldn't find the way to the ground floor lol. Great times.
Great video my friend, really great.

Wow what a good documentary. I’ve been here in 91. It had bumper cars and the most amazing collection of the latest arcades I’ve ever seen. It was one of the best expecting my life.

I lived in London from 2006-2009, and I LOVED Funland. Coming from a smaller city I'd never seen anything like it. HMV was huge too and in it's later years opened a gaming zone with consoles and gaming PCs. I think there was a Pasage Del Terror in the basement at one point too, but never got experience it. Never thought I'd be nostalgic for the 2000s!

I can confirm this all to be true having lived in London all my life and being frequent visitor of the area. I visited “Passage Del Terror” twice. First time the actors/actresses were on point but second time a bit of a let down when I brought my friends/family to it (like the second cast wasn’t as impressive) still nice thing to have access to for a day out 🙂

Yes, but what a place it was in the early 1990s. Going there in 1993 was simply amazing. I went there regularly then, but later on, in the years you mention, Fun Land was a wasteland. That enormous space, full of decaying old Agnes, many of which didn’t even work properly anymore. You saw a handful of people walking around, wondering what his this place. I remember going there one day showing a friend around, informing him how it was back on the day. I sat down and played Virtua Fighter 3. At this point a few of the buttons didn’t even work but I loved it nonetheless. In the final days, the writing was in the wall. Although they occasionally installed new games in Fun Land, there were not enough, and the older classic titles had either been sold off, or had stopped working. It was sad because I remember when the place was jam-packed with people, and you would have to wait to play any game there. The best thing was that the newest games weee also quite technologically advanced so going there enabled people to look at the sorts of games you couldn’t play at home, at least not without major compromises. Great memories.

I used to pop into Sega world during my lunch break every other day😂 'Las Vegas' arcade on wardour st was a big hot spot for Street Fighter 2 challenges... Just a 2minute walk from Sega World and it's still open in 2023. Then 'NAMCO' arcade opened up just across the road on Great windmill street... Where serious gamers would have official competition challenges, sometimes you couldn't get onto the machines because of the competition events. Aahhh great memories... 😍🙏

I remember going here as a kid really often as we lived nearby. So sad to see how it turned out - I was amazed to see how popular arcades still were in Japan when I visited recently!

Amazingly researched. As a devoured Sega fan in the early 90s, the Sonic v Mario school arguments are fresh in the mind, I remembered this opening as one of many of Sega's crazy mid 90s ideas, like the Mega CD & 32X. When I switched from Genesis I have no idea why I picked a PS1 instead of a Saturn, just something felt right about it in the shop. I still feel guilt about dropping my beloved Sega brand for newcomers Sony. Crazy thing is, few years back, I went into Dave & Busters in Times Sq, NYC & they STILL have the lines of connected Sega Rally & Daytona in there. I guess they were the last generation of arcade games before home systems could perform even better.

Funland was in the troc before sega, on the top two floors (next to where the cinema was). I worked for funland for three years before moving into their Oxford st branch! They then moved into the basement slot while sega built their place and took it back over once sega moved out (someone above mentioned that management and engineering were dipping! They were and then some!)

Great memories of Sega World and the Trocadero from my child hood till my 20s (played a lot of Street Fighter 4 in there towards the end). Back in the day there was also something called "Alien War" with actors dressed up as the marines that wasn't mentioned in this video but it was awesome!

The rumors of turning the trocadero into a pod hotel was a myth, while I was searching twitter, I found out that SEGA world London is coming back, and, the sonic statue that holds the spinning globe was discovered last year and it is a better condition.

@@greywolf6162 It would be nice, but an arcade of that size and nature would be even less profitable now than it was back in the 90's unfortunately. It's now partly a hotel, with a proposal for a mosque on one end, and The Crystal Maze experience (another 90's classic!).

8:49 I actually agree. I was a gamer. Loved the Mega Drive, loved arcades, but even I disliked Sega World. It just seemed like it was slapped together when we went. I think it was near its end of life when we went, the arcade machines were on free to play (not sure if that was normal) and I don't remember it being that busy. It was certainly no Disneyland or even Thorpe Park.
