- The Aguilar Filter Twin and MXR M82 Bass Envelope Filter are two superb envelope filter pedals designed especially for bass. Both pedals deliver that classic filter tone, with a selection of controls to tweak the sound to your taste!
This demo video shows a selection of bass grooves played through each pedal with a variety of settings, giving you a taste of what each pedal can do.
The pedals were recorded directly into Logic Pro X.
The bass guitar on show here is my trusty Fender Road Worn Jazz Bass that has been fitted with a set of Nordstrand NJ4SE pickups.
Apologies for the dodgy fingernail - finger slammed in a window accident!!!
I have both. The Aguilar stayed on my board gigging. The Mxr stayed on my home recording/practice mini board. Playing live and through PA or through my cabs the Aguilar to me is warmer and natural and less “peaky”. I found myself frantically turning knobs love with the mxr and sometimes the follower wouldn’t quite open causing annoying dub tones when I want calling for it. The Aguilar never let me down in that regard. For loooong and home recordings the MXR is a little more fun, IE radical
I agree with u on my exact sentiments on the MXR om stage. Very "peaky" and hard to control while doing shows.
What an accurate description of my experience with the Mxr. Peaky highs out of nowhere, subby at times, drastically different gig to gig, constantly fiddling with it trying to dial it in. I'm gonna go get the filter twin
The Aguliar just sounds better overall. #Madcityfunk
Great vid. Now I think i'll sell my Manta soon et go back to the classical sound of a M82. Thanks for this
aguilar has the beef! great video as I was looking to these filters.
No problem! I always wanted test them side by side, hopefully this video shows a fair comparison.
This helped me so much.. i owned a MXR for more than 2 year now but it was frustrating for me to have so many to dial live on stage. Sometimes it just goes out of control and wah out too sudden and drastic when it filters up. I find your video showed the Aguilar to be more natural, warm and less drastic wah filter to control in fear that my club's amp will blow. Shall make my purchase of the Aguilar if i can find one.
Filter Twin FTW!
I like the Aguilar more in this comparison!
Aguilar is by far a more efficient pedal for the heavy Funk i play. Thanks for the video! #madcityfunk
Great video. Lovely playing. I hope your poor finger is better now.
Aguilar for me!
MXR, no question imo
Thanks for this. I’m looking at both of these to pair with the respective octave pedal. I was leaning towards Aguilar, but based on your video, the MXR gives a cleaner tone. Not as muddy. Which did you prefer?
Hi. The MXR stayed on my board. I'd say the Aguilar is more refined and a little more tonally versatile, with its up and down sweeps, but the MXR was just a bit more in your face and wetter. Personally, that's what I want in a filter. Hope that helps!
@@rabsmusic6866 BTW thank you so much for this side by side /Lick vs Lick without slapping. I think you nailed the essence of these pedals for the viewer to really hear the difference. They really are two of the best out there and I tell people to grab both if they have the resources. Much like the debate between a P or J bass. If you can have both! there are so many comparison videos made where the same lick isn't played by the pedal they are comparing it to or they slap or play a style that isn't realistic to MOST situations so I thank you !!!! Great video
@@brianmartin1787 Thanks for the comments Brian! Yeh, just wanted to do a fair comparison so people can really hear the pedals in an A/B style, hence the same lick for each. Thanks again!
I'm torn. The M82 is obviously wetter and quackier, but I've heard the Filter Twin is way more reliable in a live setting

MXR SIEMPRE!!!
Is there a good envelope filter that allows you blend in your dry signal with the effected signal? Like a parallel compressor.
The ones I know of are hard to find or expensive, like the 3Leaf Wonderlove. But you can buy a simple blender pedal to do that. Saturnworks makes great small inexpensive ones.
The WMD fatman allows you to blend wet and dry. Has tons of other options as well. Makes mxr, aguilar, ehx filters look like toys compared to it. And most importantly it sounds great...not just a vast array of options....currently using it as a low pass filter in front of red panda bitmap v2....does wonders in front of ring modulators too. Great for funk quak sounds if you're into more traditional sounds.
The mxr is a poorly built pedal. I had issues with both mxr pedals that I purchased one being the envelope filter..it just stopped being sensitive after a week
MXR is the winner for me
Mxr is the way
Aguilar for me : it’s not even close.
MXR Is better!
