Teddy Boyko show you how to make you Honda CRF450 engine last 25% longer. He shows you the difference between the High end billet type oil filters and why you should by the cheaper OEM filters. What to do when your piston and valves need replacing. Teddy has wrenched for Broc Glover, Danny LaPorte, Graham Noyce, DG Performance and many other top motocross racers.
For those watching DO NOT EVER use power tools to put your bolts back in, Use hand tools as its much safer and you can feel the bolts tightening down!
I watched in Horror thinking the same thing bro....
yep i fkd up a drain bolt that way...I was so angry ....
When you are on flat rate, you'd never make money using hand tools for everything. You get used to how much trigger you need to tighten almost everything. Bearing crush and oil internals excluded. Torque wrenches can be used to go over anything you deem crucial.
You never want to use power tools to tighten any kind of bolt on them motors its too easy the twist head off of a bolt or strip it out the casings wont handle as much torque as what you would expect
@@nimlil I agree man, I've been a licensed automotive journeyman for the past 13 years and I've worked flat rate. If you used hand tools for everything you'd starve. You do learn how bolts feel after tightening thousands upon thousands and I only use a torque wrench if I think it needs it. Trust a professional, we go to school for a long time and do this for a living and we want everyone to return home safe to their families. At least that's how I feel anyways so take that for what it's worth
The proper way to measure the oil level is WITHOUT screwing in the dipstick. You let it rest on top.
+Mark O Yeap. That's what it said in the manual.
I'm a trained honda tech who works at a honda dealership , and lord knows I would never use an impact on drain plugs or oil filter covers. Too easy too over torque. Also, do not thread in the dip stick when checking oil level. never reuse your crush washers. They are a one time use washer and should always be replaced. One more thing, save your money and change your oil and filter every three rides. Modern oil and a good oem or equivalent filter can last longer than this guy says.
Suzuki tech here, there is so many things wrong with this video..... I hope nobody actually follows this idiots instructions or else ill be doing a shit load of helicoil's in the near future.
HMMM is it bad that iv never changed my dirt bikes oil once? its only a crf100 that I want to sell because its way to little for me now, I need the money for a car
im not sure but it might have grit in the piston, causing it to wear and loose compression i guess iv never changed it because the dip stick always shows clear good oil... it stalls on hills and you can Absolutely NOT kick start it, it wont work so you have to pop the clutch going down a hill, its temperamental sometimes dieing in the middle of a desolate field or track and its a very hard pain to get it running again its VERY low on power AND cant manage over 25 mph in top gear and the suspension seems garbage considering theres only about a inch of compression on the rear spring and its all gone when you sit on it because it sinks so low. still runs (on its last legs possibly) it might need a top end rebuild... bottom line im not sure what is wrong with it also if there is a small bike battery powering the spark plug it might be dead NOTE: im not all that familiar with dirt bikes so im not sure if they have a battery that needs to be changed every once and a whyal PLEASE HELP if the damage is done and its shot should i sell as is? fix it up? scrap it? sell for parts?
Trevor Williams
Let me take a guess at what's wrong with it. You treat it like crap. That is all.
I would no use a impact on a dirt bike !!! I am glad he don't take care of my stuff !!!
Agreed I'm a honda tech aswell and everything he just said is true!
From CRF450X manual: Remove the engine oil filler cap/dipstick (1),
wipe it clean, and insert the engine oil filler
cap/dipstick without screwing it in. Remove
the engine oil filler cap/dipstick.
Thank you from a 2013 CRF450R owner!
A good tip when draining the old oil is to lean the bike, pull decompression lever and then kick the bike a few times. This works well on the Xr650r and Xr600r and there is a lot of oil coming out by doing this.
"Don't over tighten these" runs then in with impact hahaha wow
Lol that's exactly what the fuck I was thinking
Doesn't look like his first rodeo
@@mattymccolgan9453 Doesn't matter. The potential to cross thread or over tighten with an impact is out of anyone's control, no matter how savvy they are.
Am I the only one who would never let this guy touch my quad?
as soon as he started using that impact drill to put the bolts in i cringed....no wrench or torque spec....wonder how many bolts fall out on him....or over tight...so scetch
Exactly. At least use a 1/4 wrench and tighten them. Not an impact.. lol
thats a ratcheting drill...
If you start the bolt by hand then impact it all almost until it almost gets tight, then proceed to hand tighten it you'll be just fine. I've built 2 supermotos using this Technique and never once had to Re-tap any threads...
I should add that the case number for re-assemply is how I always understod it.And I'm new to the 4 stroke thing...haveing alway run two strokes...I'm very conserned about getting the most out of the bikke as possable...This is my first Honda...and I'm quite pleased with it.All Ive done to it is .48kg/mm fork springs from race tech FMF exhaust and removed the air filter screen...and twin-air filter.
Hey bud just a heads up, on the clutch side you said that bike holds 670cc's of lube on the clutch side, then you said the ratio rite cup held 500cc's, filled the cup dumped it in and buttoned it up. What happened to the other 170cc's of oil ?
Jump cut?
just bought 07 crf450x. Love it . Just learning everything. Reading the owners manual and your right!!!!!!!!!!!!! The whole # 4. Just like the book. Change the oil every time i ride?? if he wants to b my mechanic ok but seemed overkill. thanks
Those oil filter bolt threads are *easy* to strip.
he said that in the clutch side the bike holds 670ml of oil and he just put only 500ml cause he said that the measure jug or what its called it holds only 500ml.
I thought the same thing lol
Same
i would not let this guy change the oil on my bike. 1) he used an impact wrench!! 2) he didn't put enough gear oil in, he was about 150cc short!! 3) where possible always replace the drain plug washers!!!! what a top hat!!
yes you can i run 10w40 in both clutch and engine side and no problems
Honda manual says check oil level but do not screw the oil dip stick, just rest it on top
The text @ 1:13 conflicts with what he says at 1:20 regarding the drain plugs
If you taking out oil filter make sure you have a new o ring as the cover won't go back on without a new seal. I know he said it's not necessary but everytime I've tried to reuse a old seal it pinches on the bottom EVERY TIME
Also, when replacing the oil filter plate, you didnt smear a little oil on the O'ring, You dont want it to be dry when inserting it, as it will rub on the alloy casing and cause it to wear/split.. leading to an oil leak...
Great Video . This guy apparently knows what he is doing, but normally I would not recommend using any kind of power tool (impact wrench) on the smaller engine bolts especially the oil filter bolts.
He put 500cc in the transmission side he even said it recommended 600. Also NEVER use impact tools on oil drain bolts unless you want problems in the future.
Didn’t tell us what kind of oil to use haha
when checking oil level on hondas you arent suppose to thread in the dipstick
Oil can last for a 50-100 hrs if you let it. I think the point is the maximum engine life possible, which may or may not mean a ridiculous amount of oil changes. :-> I wouldn't change the oil after every ride. Maybe every 4 rides or so.
Yeah, unless you have an hour meter. For me it wouldn't matter much because I trail ride. And a race might be 3-4 hrs worth of riding. I guess it really just depends on what you do and how you ride.
I would check oil every ride and change every 4-5 I wouldn't run paper filters I would run metal reusable filters. that's my opinion
'Make sure you don't over tighten these bolts' as he's smashing them in with a power tool without hand engaging threads. Wonder how many times he's had to helicoil a thread...
Does my bike have to not have a chain on it to do this?
when the oil is done leaking always kick the kick start a few times and be amazed at how much more dirty oil comes out... this guy didn't do that unfortunately...
agreed!!! bottom end holds a bit , i put some filtered old oil through to wash out any bit of metal bits just in case
Great video, thank you!
Id i may make a couple recommendations.
I personally have had my crf250 since brand new in 2005. In 2007 i had my motor completely built by procircuit. I bought a CRT reusable oil filter and always cleaned it out. My engine inside and out to this day still look brand new from the day i bought the bike.
For oil, i personally use Maxima on the engine side and honda's recommended oil on the clutch side. I've used this combination since the day i had my motor built. I also add a bit of lucas oil stabilizer which has done amazingly.
which did u add Lucas too
+D-Block side
D-Block Engine side, just because the thick consistency tends to stay up in the top end when ever the bike is stored or sitting. Lucas likes to stick on all the metal components keeping them lubed at all times. and it makes it so cold starts don't wear out as quickly over time.
+Review Guy nice idea... how much Lucas do you think you add?
MichaelJerkson I usually add less than a 1/4 of the bottle. I just pour it into the bottle of oil im about to add to the engine. and mix it all in there before pouring. Really keeps things lubricated even when the engine sits for awhile. Its nice how much it will stay inside your head and cam area with the thickness of it.
I wish you would show exactly where the screw is. I have a CRF VIDEO too
Great vid. Got my 04 450 ready for spring today and this really came in handy
D-Block motor 10w-40 Lucas oil semi synthetic transmission 80w/85w synthetic Lucas oil
Those glasses tho lol
Lol, dey his handy dandy goggles.. Lmfaoo...
Ted you should of went to specsaver 😎
so you should change both clutch and motor after every ride? clutch seems like a bit overkill.
you NEVER use an impact for shit like this... completely unnecessary
I was thinking the same thing, its more of a pain reaching for that thing and make sure its on the right setting and got the right attachments then just fucken hand tightening them in
I'm surprised you recomend using the number on the case for oil top up amounts. That number is for when the case is split...The trans in the CRF450 manual specks 590cc/590ml/0.59l or 0.62US qt...I'm not trying to hate on your vid.just wondering if the manual is wrong? should I change the amount i'm putting in?
I go riding everyday. How often should i do it then. Im not changing it everyday.
Ya that's stupid.
awesome honda Some 5 hours or so of riding would probably be good. Of course it depends how hard you are pushing your bike. Hard track driving everyday and you have to do it sooner, even after 3 hours or so.
BassBreath100 I hope that's a joke...
that would be a waste of money.
Every 15 hrs
Hi, can you use the same type of oil for both the engine and clutch/transmission side?
Did you put the other 170cc's of oil in your clutch side? You said your bike required 670cc's, and that your measure-rite only holds 500cc's. So, hoping you did. peace
so what kind of oil do I need for my motor side and my clutch side?
Motor Side fully synthetic engine oil ....... clutch side semi synthetic transition oil .....plutoline race tech nano is a good oil
how does he know if the oil is not good anymore after one time ride?
or is the maxima oil so bad:)
Good video
Dude you didn't add extra transmission oil and a impact no no no!
What if you don’t have a dip stick
You were short 170cc's of oil in that transmission. Ratio right only holds 500cc.
not to nag but dident you only add 500cc to clutch not your intended 670? not sure if that would increase engine life
Engine and clutch. I can put same oil 10w40
4 rides? What does that mean? No certain amount of time, just 4 rides?
My Honda manual says to change the oil "every 15 races"
does this apply to the 05 450x the manual only shows one drain bolt on left side
I do oil change every 5 hours and oil filter every secound oil change😊
What happens if I put engine oil on the transmission??
Thanks for the tips
Can anyone Explain how debris are keep out of Engine when Engine.trans, clutch use same sump?
Will engine oil also work in transmission side.?
how much for one of these bad boys?
Bc my 2006 crf450r need a new engine and there is one in ebay cheap 2011...thanks
Why do you have to change the oil so often on a dirt bike It doesn't make any sense?
:} now now lets make sure we replace that oring with every oil change as well
I change my oil every 10 hours havnt even changed the gear oil yet it probly has around 30-40 hours on it ttr 230
Also should u change ur gear oil every time u change the oil
+Matthew Renouf yes or every other time if you have to
where do you come up with 25% ??
Nice Jetski cylinder on the bench looks like a 650
How much oil do I put in there
Can I make 2011 crf450r engine run with a carburetor?
Noooo why would you need to?
thanks
Does this count for casual riding I ride a crf150r I don't race
lmao no ull be fine those things are going still running for the price of an oil change on a 450
What makes you say that? Oil is oil, no matter where you put it in at. Or at least that's what I would think.
every other ride??
my god i want a bike lift like that!!
hey Eric thanks for the info I will check things out tomorrow
question the dirt bike should used the oil mix with gasoline 2 stroke so the CRF450 is not 2 stroke ???
No it's not a 2 stroke a 450 2 stroke does not exist
+Christian Board a 450 2 stroke from HONDA doesn't exist
ok
lmfao u were just playing right, u werent serious about that comment I hope
boss i never ride or hand a dirt bike you happy now
He should of went to specsavers😎
He forgot the last 170cc of clutch oil
You should always wear rubber gloves when working with any fluids! I have to tell myself all the time. Great show, thanks so much!
Do you ride?
😂you don’t need gloves let go in hand it’s like honey to me
Sorry mate but will disagree, Honda made to last almost without service, so changing oil and filter every ride must be joke, just did 980miles on my crf450x and disided to change oils as i was doing in past 8 years, guess what? my my engine never been touched its is as it came out of the box 8 years ago, so common cense applies here, don't exaggerate go with flow, when it brakes then strip it down and repair or replace, don't keep changing thinks that perfectly ok just like KTM riders :-)
why my crf250l needs more oil than a 450 1.5l
type of oil , you can find in the owners manual .
in the owners service manual you find how strong you have to attach the bolts , With a momentum keytool tool ,lol
Should be running bell ray oil
And its done to make Honda and oil makes money
why is the chain missing ?
why not
Did this guy miss the other 170cc's of gearbox oil or did i miss something, sure the measuring jug held 500 ? Power tools on installation is a big no no, whats this guy thinking!
good oil don,t make up for bad engine design,u can change oil as many times as you like won,t make crf last any longer... crf,s biggest problem is the valves and oil has nothing to do with valves!!!
Engine.620mil. Clutch 670 mil
have fun when you grenade it buddy. its not an old xr do your research and maintenance or be prepared o pay
You put 500 cc's. you said it calls for 660
turning the engine over by hand with the kickstarter drains an extra 150 mls....he never covered that .....hmmmmm....
You missing 175cc's of trans fluid 🙄
So happy this bike isint mine or a 2020 my teeth are grinding still tho
I will not change my oil after every ride as recommended in this video at 0:34.
same
I have a suzuki lt 80 and after 11 Years i changed the oil the First Time
Sorry for you bike damn haha
how do you change the oil on a automatic 2 stroke? very curious
+JJ Rood your bikes must feel bad haha
i would not let this guy work on my bike when he said add 670cc of oil to the clutch and then he added 500cc
what does it mean if my oil is coming out milky looking
Milky oil is a sign of excessive moisture in the case or somewhere in the oil. this could be from a bad head gasket, or the water pump seal.
Oh dang. I'll have that checked out thanks bro.
means your not pulling out in time
devonwesticles hahaha
Deffo don't change oil/filter.....too often !.....about every 1000 miles or so , beware of impacts on small nuts etc....so easy to strip thread , and next owner cant get the thing off cause its too tight [ sigh [ .
change your oil every ride!!? i have a 04 crf450r and change it about every 40 hours lol, probably should change it a little more but every ride is wayyyy to much!
what does it mean when my oil os milky
+YeahWeRepTheSameSmartech I think moisture is in the oil
9 times out of 10 it means a seal is bad and your getting coolent in your engine oil ussaly inner water pump seal will do that
I change my oil every 5th tank of fuel!
+SlammedBeretta Good idea, how do people keep track of how many hours the engine has been running? I'm selling my SV for an MX bike and i'm trying to learn some stuff, I know they are maintenance heavy pieces of kit!
Hr meter is a good investment.
+SlammedBeretta I started looking them up after I wrote the previous comment haha.
+SV650Dude Check out Works Connection hour meters, Their extremely well made and durable.
no no's for beginners,, maybe you are comfortable with out a torque wrench,, but hondas shop manual,,has specs on the bolts.. and as for the measurement of oil,, Honda has always used the method of never screw in the dip stick !! check factory honda.. Always replace the crush washer, another factory statement.. This is an expensive motorcycle so stick to the makers statements. And lastly for beginners DO NOT USE A IMPACT DRIVER to tighten bolts with, This guy may be comfortable with this method , but always use a torque wrench and follow the factory specs.. You will thank me later . Better to know you have done a professional job than speed.. Your not a flat rate mechanic.
Bro you only put 500cc in lol
The best way to make a CRF450 last longer is to swap a CR250 motor into it.
