    Been looking for this since the X100V was released. I lost money buying the Fujifilm option then I bought the Squarehood option. None of them matched my expectations ! Your video is perfect not pushing to sell anything but giving your own opinion. Thanks bro !

    Fits the X70 too. And both black and silver exactly match the cameras. And the filter glass is closer to the lens, so any dirt is less visible in the shot. And it's cheaper. And it's just one item instead of three. And it's waaaay more compact. And lighter. And the chamfer makes it easier to slip the camera in your bag or pocket. And it doesn't fall off like the Fuji hood. And the Fuji lens cap still fits, not that you'll ever need it again. Superior in every conceivable way. Just in case anyone is still in any doubt...

    Thanks for your video, I just purchased an X100VI and I was wondering if this filter can also work as a lens hood, I see it as small to shield the side light, have you checked it from this point of view? Thank you

    Can you put a NiSi Black Mist filter on as well? I have the NiSi hood in the video, but i really want to put on a NiSi Black mist filter as well. Hope you know if it is possible! Love your content dude !!

      Thanks! You can't use another filter along with this one, but they did have a mist version of this filter a while ago. I didn't pick one up as the effect looked far too much for my liking - I much prefer a mild effect like 1/8 or 1/16 diffusion. I should be getting hold of some Formatt Hitech filters soon I think!

    Thank you for this. I just got the X100VI and have been going through all the filter options, actually liking none. Like you I don't want to change or filter anything, I just want the camera to be protected. Everyone seems to love them, but I just don't go for the square hoods which everyone seems to be recommending in UA-cam, I like my camera just as it is. You are pretty well the only one to make me aware of the Nisi options and I managed to find one that suits (your link of course is no longer valid after a few years).

    How well does this round/flatter hood block against flare compared to the square-design models? Think I understand that the x100v lens is less susceptible to flare than longer lenses with greater number of elements, so maybe not of overriding practical concern, but logically seems the square design would be more effective.

    Note that as of summer 2021, Hoage makes a similar product (adapter-filter combined unit) but with a built-in hood. In the Nisi model, the filter is exposed to extraneous light because it is at the very front of the design. In the Hoage unit, the filter is recessed without adding too much to the size of the lens.

    Where does the filter glass sit within the hood? It appears to be at the front, in which case its effectiveness as a lens hood is somewhat compromised. Good for weather sealing, but less effective at keeping out unwanted light.

    Bought the Nisi for my (black) x100v based upon this exact video, and I must say this is my absolute favorite. I also have the Square Hood (on my x100f currently), the Fuji+B+W setup, and a JJC hood. The Nisi is superior for several reasons, the main reason for me being that it’s great quality while keeping the camera as compact as possible. It also just looks great… clean and streamlined. Love that you can still use the factory Fuji cover too.

    • @FamauMedia
      @FamauMedia  4 роки тому

      It's hard to say without comparing it side-by-side with another more conventional hood unfortunately, I may have to buy a cheap one sometime to do some tests! It should still offer some protection from light coming in from the side as the front of the filter curves inward, reducing the field of view slightly - if that makes sense. Honestly though, I can't say much without comparing it to other hoods in the same scenario 💁‍♂️

    The Nisi filter was great on my X100V. Kept it when I sold the V and have used it on my X100Vi….. all good but today I needed to do some close up shots at minimum focus distance…. Got the dreaded Focus error message. Tried same shot without the Nisi without a problem. It seems that either the increased thread on the lens of the Vi or perhaps the lens extends slightly further at close focus distance? Either way at close focus distance I get the error with the Nisi and the all in one Hoage filter too. Both fine for normal use but at close distance seem to have issues. I am not testing further as can’t afford to risk damage to the camera. Anyone else had this issue?

    Great suggestion. I bought both the Fuji and the JJC lens hoods and they both got dented really easily. I wish I had gone with this option as I would have saved the cost of a UV filter and it looks great ..

    • @FamauMedia
      @FamauMedia  4 роки тому

      Welcome to the club! It's only fully weather-sealed with the addition of a filter, so the lens is completely enclosed. Main reason I went for this Nisi one 💁‍♂️

      @@bridex1 honestly that’s what I’ve mostly been doing with this one. No matter what filter you use, the image will never be as sharp as the bare lens. The case is tiny so it’s just always there in my bag if it does start pouring down 👌

    The only issue I have with this lens hood is that the filter is so close to the front it won’t prevent me touching the glass with my fingers. The filter is practically flush with the hood. I would also have fear of the uv being damaged then needing to send the whole thing in or buy a new one.
    That’s why I prefer squarehood. Thanks for posting the video. I will share with a few buddies who have the x100v as well.

    I have both the Haoge and JJC hood (I use an Urth UV filter), and my issue with both of them is that I can see the damn hood in my view finder, and it blocks the lower right hand side of any scene I'm shooting. This looks so sleek that it wouldn't be an issue. Can you please tell me if you it blocks any of your scene through the viewfinder?

    I bought this Nisi hood after watching your video. Unfortunately, while it is a clever design, I had a bad experience with it. Just 2 days after I installed it, with the camera being well cared for, never dropped or knocked about, the glass filter separated from the hood. Not sure if I got a defective unit or not but it seems like the glass might only be glued to the filter and that is the weak point in the design and so I am not taking a chance on getting another one.

    • @FamauMedia

      Sorry to hear that! Mine's taken quite a few knocks with the filter on, absolutely fine. You're probably right, likely just a one-off defect unit. Drop them an email and I'm sure they'd probably send you a new one 🤓

    Good, sadly I bought separate circular lens hood, good quality (i believe) uv filter and 46mm lens cap before I found this option.
    Well ... that solution has two minor advantage and one major disadvantage.
    Lens hood seems to block some sun or rain and it protects uv filter against mechanical damage so it can be used without lens cap which is faster and more comfortable.
    Disadvantage is obviously size which is main reason why to get X100V so it is against its design and purpose.
    PS: yeah, we may argue how UV filter adds to lens flare, but bigger problem is using zoom lens with 17 elements (no matter if it's pro-grade with some nano-coating) compared to 7-8 elements prime lens.

      If you put it on the X100F and want to use the original lens cap you can order a replacement lens cap for the X100V from B&H and put that on the Nisi filter. The F lens cap is smaller so it won't fit. I think the replacement V lens cap was around $15.

    Did you experience any issues with flaring or color cast?

    • @FamauMedia
      @FamauMedia  4 роки тому +1

      You'll always see some degree of flaring shooting at bright lights no matter what filter you use, no different with this one. I feel the images filter-free have a tiny bit more punch in the colours and overall clarity, but I'd rather that than get water in the lens. In nice weather I'll usually stick it back in the case

    • @FamauMedia
      @FamauMedia  4 роки тому +1

      Misread that - no colour cast that I've noticed, just very slightly less saturated. Guess that depends on which profile you're shooting in too though

    • @FamauMedia
      @FamauMedia  4 роки тому +1

      No worries, Stephen! There’s a metal ring on the end of the lens, which we can unscrew to attach other accessories. Only about 2-4mm thick, easy to not notice it!

    Very informative video for sure. Nisi should link to you some how. One question, is it actually effective for shielding the lens from light?

    • @FamauMedia
      @FamauMedia  4 роки тому

      Thanks Ken! I've actually been in talks with Nisi and they may well be using this video 🤓 Unfortunately here in N Wales we've not had much sunshine since I've had the filter (not unusual here...), but the rare occasions I have shot in bright sunlight it does seem to narrow down the intake a bit. Saying that, I also love shooting backlit - but a hood's always a nice addition for protection if nothing else!

    • @godsakes
      @godsakes 4 роки тому

      I'd assume it's better as a custom x100 filter/protector than as a hood... ultimately there is nothing blocking the light from hitting the front glass so surely you'd get flaring from that before even thinking about whether or not the design blocks flare to the actual lens

  • @seckiv
    @seckiv 3 роки тому

    Have you found any difference in picture quality with the filter on?

    • @FamauMedia
      @FamauMedia  3 роки тому

      If shooting into direct sunlight you'll get some flaring and a bit of loss in contrast & clarity, but otherwise not a great deal. Same with most filters really. Personally I keep it in my bag until it looks like the weather is about to turn, so for the most part I'm shooting filter-free 👌

I will buy another cheap filter adapter from JJC for my 10-stop ND filter, but most of the time the camera can be weather-sealed with this without adding much bulk.
