Insane how enormously talented each member of The Band was, but Rick was my favorite. Their kind passes only once in this lifetime. Miss Levon and Richard, but Rick the most.

I was at the concert at the Cruise Cafe that night, with Danko, Fjeld and Anderson. I also met him at the studio a couple of days before, where they were recording their CD, because I was tuning the piano there. He was a very nice and friendly man.

Rick Danko is a LEGEND. What a tremendous artist and man. Nobody sounds like Rick Danko. He sang with a sweet sadness and had a rare high to low vocal ability. One of a kind. All he ever wanted was to play music. Thank God he did.

I saw Rick playing solo at a BMW motorcycle Rallye in upstate NY months before he passed away!!! Noticed he wasn't in great shape at the time! I had a weird experience there!! I sat right up front because I was a big "The Band" fan and at one point while he played his guitar he look right into my eyes as if trying to say something!!! Didn't think anything about it 6 months later heard about his passing !!! Then it came back to me!!!! Don

I met Rick about a year later at an autism benefit show in NYC. Rick was very kind and friendly. I got to the show early and he came out and did a casual sound check. I was the only one the auditorium as Rick ran through a couple of tunes for sound check. I heard “When You Awake” and I believe he also did “Twilight” .

I got to meet Rick after a show in Atlanta back in 1994 when he and a couple of the newer band members hung around outside the bus where it was parked behind the venue. He was friendly and personable and took the time to speak with everyone who happened to be there after the concert. I am glad to read comments from other people who have met Rick and got to see what a genuinely nice person he was. It's such as sad loss that he has been gone so long.

Rick was for some reason, my favorite member of THE BAND.
I think there was something about his spirit that just grabbed me and pulled me into the music! Him singing IT MAKES NO DIFFERENCE in the Last Waltz film just breaks my heart every time I hear it!
Plus he is my favorite bass player of all time... especially back when he played that big fretless bass with the "violin" headstock.
I wish I knew who made that bass, or if it was a one of a kind. I'd surely give anything to buy one of those, though I'm sure it's way beyond my pay scale! I love Rick's voice... the one verse he sings in THE WEIGHT... ,"Crazy Chester followed me and be caught me in the fog..." My favorite verse in the song.
God bless you Rick, may you rest in peace. And to die on your 50th birthday... I'm 60 now and it seems impossible that I'm ten years older than he ever lived to be! Crazy!!
I saw THE BAND in a little bar in Portland Oregon... When I bought the tickets, Richard Manuel was alive, but by the time the concert rolled around, he had taken his life. They'd hired a new piano player, but without Richard it was a different Band. But I got to spend half the show so close to Levon I could have reached out and touched his foot, I then moved to the other side of the stage and watched Rick Danko from about five feet away for the rest of the show! One of the most excellent performance I'd ever seen! As always, ✌🏼& ❤️🌎🌍

Add me to the column of people who crossed paths with the man. Knoxville, I'm guessing 1989-1990. I was fortunate enough to be there on the invite of someone connected to the promoter. While I remember him looking far different than the man I was familiar with in the 70"s, he was so genuine and kind. We were having drinks at the bar after the show (I know), and I remember thinking how incredible that this at least semi-icon of rock was just a guy, shooting the shit. Great guy, Rick Danko.

Hey, I worked my ass of on twilight, and the real key was realizing he played it in "dropped D" tuning... So take that low E string and drop it down to a D... Watch his hands (in every video you can find of him singing this song)... The chords came together pretty quickly once I moved to "drop D tuning."
It also gives it a little more bass emphasis which is nice if you're playing solo. Good luck! Wish I could give you a lesson, but I'll bet you'll pick it up! Good luck!
