"One Piece at a Time" is another hilarious story song he wrote, about working at the automotive factory, and slowly stealing all the parts to build his own car...😂
This song lyric/poem was written by humorist Shel Silverstein. Johnny did a great job with it. This performance was a big hit record. The prisoners at San Quentin seemed to get a real kick out of it. Notice that San Quentin (like most U.S. prisons) was segregated -- thus the all-white audience.
Back in the day, story telling was huge…and if you could play guitar and sing your story…well, you were on your way to great things. People loved a good story and if you could make them laugh as well, you had it made! Johnny was an entertainer, who was well known Before t.v. Times were simpler then, his audiences were listening to radio in the country, in prisons, they could relate to or had lived his stories. He performed through al mediums, live, radio, television, movies, talk shows then videos, during all the years between. And always being the class act he was. RIP John, we miss you! ❤️🔥❤️🔥
hit that rabbit hole man. You will enjoy the ride. I mean just think about the performance in prison and how those men, some still living today, had that moment of history that will never be forgotten.
He had a remarkable life and actually did time in prison. This song was filmed at San Quentin. His wife, June Carter, and her family were famous in their own right.
I don’t know how, but the video you’re watching has jumped a verse in the song. After the first verse, that ends “he went and named me Sue”, the next (2nd) verse should be: “Well, he must have thought it was quite a joke and it got a lot of laughs from a’ lots of folks… Seems I had to fight my whole life through. Some gal would giggle and I’d get red And some guy’d laugh and I’d bust his head, I tell ya life ain’t easy for A Boy Named Sue”.
Another funny, story song by Johnny is One Piece At A Time. As for the song Hurt. The video of that song was done when he was basically on his deathbed.
Love your reaction : )) It's weird, but I still get a little emotional when he says "I called him my pa and he called me his son" It's amazing how songs can evoke such emotions from us.
Oh man, I remember this song very well when I was a little kid it was on the radio all the time! They had to bleep out the one dirty word, times have changed…. Love Johnny Cash he knows how to tell a story. Check out “Rock Island line“
Great storytelling!!! The images appear in the mind as if watching a movie, ya know? It was a very big deal for him to perform at San Quinton and Cash worked hard to make it a reality. Another wonderful live and younger one of his was The Man In Black which he performed at a college during the Vietnam War era. I truly believe that you would appreciate it! My Momma introduced me to his music when I was young. I love all styles of music but I must admit that I'm a bit picky when it comes to country because I have such respect for the older ones, Cash, Dolly Parton and Loretta Lynn to name a few. Pure! From the heart ❤ Thank you so much for sharing young man! 😽💋🎶
This song was actually a poem written by Sid Silverstein, which Johnny Cash put to music. Sid Silverstein is a famous American poet who wrote goofy poems, who passed in 1999. Johnny Cash songs usually tell a story--silly, or sad, or deep, or thought provoking.
Thank you for checking this out. I knew you'd love it. The crowd would go crazy when he would do this song. Johnny Cash was the king of country in those days.
Do I need to plead??? I really really Really want to see your reaction to James Brown and Luciano Pavarotti...together! These 2 artists have totally different vouces/styles but some genius found a way to to have them complement each other@ Glad you hear Johnny...he has SO many eirth hearing!
If I may offer a suggestion, it should be news to nobody by now that the super group ABBA has reunited after 40 years and only a couple days ago released two new singles. You might consider a reaction video, as several other reactors already have, to their first release "I still have faith in you". Thank you for your consideration and keep up the great work. I very much enjoy your videos.
If you get a chance watch the movie Walk the line with Joaquin Phoenix playing Johnny Cash. It'll tell you a lot about his story.. Folsom prison blues is another good one..
Thanks for the notifications, when you upload. Look forward to spending a little time with you and the fam. Please react to George Michael "kissing a fool". This one is smooth as silk, and a mooooood 💙 Lastly, "The man in black", and "Jackson " are two great Johnny Cash songs you could react to
Gotta listen to some Harry Chapin if you want to visualize some more story songs. A few favorites are Sniper, The Man that made America Famous, Dogtown, Woman Child. List goes on and on.
You missed his two biggest ones, "Taxi" and "Cats in the Cradle" and all music reactors miss one of my favorite Chapin songs, "W.O.L.D." None of them react to it, because they never heard of it.
@@woodysthoughts4032 I didn't miss them, they just aren't my favorites. Cats is overplayed and actually written by his wife, and although I love Taxi it's been reacted to ad nauseam.
@@woodysthoughts4032 agreed on W.O.LD. like you, I'm trying to get reactors to react to his lesser known masterpieces. I'm assuming you've heard those on my list. If not, please give them a listen.
He visited San Quentin and inspired Merle Haggard, who went on to be one of the greatest country singer/writers of all time. Merle Haggard has a HUGE library.
I recommend two duets--one with his wife (June Carter and Johnny Cash), It Ain't Me Babe, a Bob Dylan cover. Also a duet Johnny did with Bob Dylan called Girl from the North Country.
Johnny Cash always paints a picture in your mind with all his songs. He is one of the great story tellers through music. A true american treasure!
He didn't write this one. Shel Silverstein did.
@@leonardshevlin7260 Never said he did.

Agreed!
One of his best songs according to me! 💯😁
Actually, Shel Silverstein wrote "A Boy Named Sue."
Kind of told him the punchline, so now, why do the song ???

I'm not a big country music fan, but over the years I have come to really respect it. They tell great stories in their songs.
Imagine being an artist and singing that infront of inmates at San Quentin State Prison at this time
“One piece at a time” and “Man in Black “. Do them both.
It may not be surprising to learn that Johnny Cash and Bob Dylan really hit it off - Johnny is definitely worth another listen!
he sings a song called the highwayman with 3 other legends.
What a storyteller he was!

"BURNING RING OF FIRE" is another great song of his to listen to.
June wrote most of Ring of Fire. Johnny just tweaked some of the music. He was her ring of fire.

And then Merle met Freddie Fender in jail and started him in music
Ring of Fire with his wife June Carter.
