  • But or Rent - Mrs. Doubtfire - • Mrs. Doubtfire
    Daniel Hillard (Robin Williams) is a struggling father who loses his job as a voice actor for cartoons. When he throws a disastrous surprise birthday party for his son, Chris, everything takes a turn for the worse. Daniel's wife, Miranda (Sally Field), has had it with Daniel and wants a divorce. When the divorce hearings arrive, Daniel is denied custody of the children, but is allowed visitations... but seeing his children once a week isn't enough. Daniel, with the help of his friend, theatrical make-up artist Frank (Harvey Fierstein), disguises himself as "Mrs. Doubtfire," a woman of mature years, a sharp tongue, and an endearing way with the children. In the guise of "Mrs. Doubtfire", Daniel charms his way back into the lives of his unsuspecting family. But his act is too good, and complications arise... and if his act is discovered, he may be separated from his family permanently.

    Also, Harvey Fierstein's voice actually does sound like that. That voice has made him famous. He originated the role of Edna Turnblad in Hairspray on Broadway and he was the voice of Yao in the movie Mulan.

    I had met Mara Wilson (Natalie) a couple of weeks ago, and she said that working with Robin was one of her most precious memories. He was always on set making them laugh, and one scene in particular that Robin was doing that was when he made the antler face at the dinner table. She said he made up a song about ants behind the scenes, so that's why she was laughing.
    This movie made me realize about divorced parents that it's about what's best for the couple. My parents divorced after 30+ years together, and I took it pretty hard as a 26 year old. This movie filled in the gaps to what I was feeling, all thanks to the crew of this movie.

    You’re one of the few reactors to see both sides. So many are quick to villainize Miranda for wanting to divorce and having custody of the kids. But it makes sense given his situation. They literally would’ve had equal custody once he was settled.
    And sometimes people just aren’t good together anymore, which is why I love this movie’s message on that

      Yeah I mean Daniel was a great father who really loved his kids but sadly he was trying to be too much of a friend and not laying down enough rules. It really showed in Liddy when she refused to back down or show respect when she was told to stop watching TV and do her homework.

    Robin Williams is one of the very few celebrities whose death still really gets to me. For most, it still makes me sad, but they don't make me cry. Just thinking about Robin and his movies and his death makes me start tearing up. He was a huge part of my childhood, and left us far too soon, not just because he was talented but he was also an amazing person. There are so many stories about him just being so kind and humble, I wish I'd gotten to meet him.

    Harvey Fierstein is famous for his voice, yes, but he was and still is a renowned playwright, and I believe that's where he got his start in the business. He wrote Torch Song Trilogy (a play) and La Cage Aux Folles (a musical; he wrote the book for this). Both were very important works for the gay community, back in the days when it took a lot of balls to write and produce such works. They shed a light on aspects of gay life that hadn't been shed in popular media before, the human side of what in those days most people thought of as 'other than human'. And both works were hits both in and out of the gay community, especially La Cage which was made into a film as well (of the same title) and later was used as the basis for another film called The Birdcage (starring, no surprise, his close friend and Mrs. Doubtfire castmate, Robin Williams). Definitely worth a watch - - Brilliant. Beautiful. Interesting reaction so far.

    Growing up is realizing both parties had their positives and negatives. The film focuses on the husband's faults not really the mothers. She's barely around, doesn't know her kids as well as her husband and had a tendency to disrespect him in front of the kids. She outgrew him and he needed to grow up and focus.

    The sad thing about the makeup scene with his brother is the younger generation doesn't realize how good Robin is and the references. The Fiddler on the Roof with Matchmaker and Barbara Streisand singing Rain on My Parade broke up the audience in the theaters. Then when Harvey Weinstein brought up Shelly Winters, Shirley McLain and Joan Collins was just the topper.

It was one of the only things which helped me process, and make peace with, my parents splitting up and moving into separate places. The ending lines really stuck with me especially, and I really think every child of divorced or otherwise separated parents should watch💜 Additionally, it helped me immerse myself in the film because I’m 1 of 3 siblings, my mum is like Miranda, and my dad is very much like Daniel

    One of the best films that Robin Williams has ever done! In retrospect the divorce was actually good for both Daniel and Miranda. While Daniel needed to learn to be a more responsible parent, Miranda had to learn to be a more carefree and loving one. As it’s been stated in the end, it’s more about how the kids are going to be dealing with the divorce, not the parents. If you aren’t aware there is a musical production of this film, and one of the songs is based on a deleted scene in which Lydia wonders why can’t her parents just pretend to be happily married because then they could be a family. Her father response is that we wouldn’t be happy, they wouldn’t be happy, it just be a pretend family.

    the director originally wanted Daniel and Miranda to get back together at the end of the movie. Robin Williams and Sally Field, who had both gone through divorces convinced him not to do that. it would give kids false hope that their parents could get back together.
    as a child of divorced parents, it's best for everyone that some couples stay divorced. for the safety, physically and mentally of everyone involved. no more violent and verbal fights that the kids have to hear

  • @TaylorsAngel18
    @TaylorsAngel18 7 місяців тому +1

    The writers originally had it written that Miranda and Daniel were going to get back together in the end. Robin Williams requested a change, he didn't want the movie to give false hope to children whose parents were going through divorces. He wanted children to see that Mommies and Daddies can be apart but still be friends in the end because they both love their children very much.
    Another fun fact, this whole movie was inspired by Aerosmith's song "Dude looks like a Lady." The writer said if it weren't for that song, there wouldn't have been a Mrs. Doubtfire.

    $300 a week, even in 1995, wasn't a lot. But it did go farther than it does these days. My first apartment in NYC, which was two buildings in from Central Park in the West 80s (on average, rent for this studio would now be about $3000/month) was $795 a month.

    • @AirLancer
      @AirLancer 5 місяців тому

      That's more the NYC real estate market being completely broken, along with other major rental markets. With inflation, $795 would be $1600 today rather than the insane amounts that are being charged for rent these days.

    Just found your channel while searching movie reactions and subscribed after seeing the fact you showed actual human emotions, while the initial court hearing was being shown, which shows you're a good person, empathetic, compassionate and can feel what others are going through, even if only a movie and isn't real because as we all know, divorce and custody goes on daily, especially in the US and it's hardest on the children but also very very hard on whichever loving parent won't get equal time with their children and for the first time having to live in another household away from their children, their life. It's just rare to watch UA-cam or in general see people that actually show their true emotions because they're trying to be someone they're not, are embarrassed to or don't have any because we've been so desensitized these days with everything going on but thank you for sharing this movie and your chanel! the biggest and most important part of this movie is that in a divorce, no matter what, THE CHILDREN COME FIRST. parents can't let their hatred of each other deprive them of the children who are a part of Both of them. children should never be pulled away from one parent by the other. it scars them in ways that are FOREVER, no amount of kisses or Band-Aids can fix those boo-boos. divorcing parents MUST NEVER let their hatred cloud their love for their children. and if they do, they are not fit to be parents. it's the honest harsh truth and that's what I think I love so much about this gem (other than Robin's jokes of course): it doesn't end up with the parents reconciling, Miranda and Daniel stay divorced but they still love their children enough to learn that they're better as friends than partners. it's a rare thing for any kind of entertainment to be so real. usually it's either a reconciliation with a nice bow on top, or the other extreme: sole custody. this handles it as it should be. ❤

    I'm gonna get a lot of flack for this. As a kid I sided with Daniel. As an adult, I STILL side with Daniel but I can now see Miranda's point of view. You wanna know why I still side with Daniel? Simple. The children. The one thing no one ever stops to think about in this situation nor anybody in the movie. Sure Miranda was angry with Daniel and hurt, but did she ever stop for one second to think about how the kids feel? No. All throughout the movie the children are crying out for their father. Practically on their knees begging their mom to let them spend time with their dad. You heard Lydia in that scene when they all met Mrs. Doubtfire. She just wanted as much time with their dad as possible. And the scene where Daniel revealed himself to her and Chris. At first they were scared (reasonably so). But for the most part, the two of them were just so happy to see their dad again and you can see it all over their faces. Those who want to try to say that children don't know what they want or what's best for them, you're wrong. Kids may not know much of anything but they always know what they want and what is going to make them happy. *NO GOOD LOVING FATHER SHOULD HAVE THEIR CHILDREN TAKEN AWAY FROM THEM. EVER.* And yes I am hella biased. My parents were engaged when my mom got pregnant. But my dad just sort of changed. He wasn't the man my mom thought he was and she knew if she married him the 3 of us would have been a miserable family and they would end up divorced down the line anyway. So my mom broke off their engagement. But she still did everything she could to keep him in my life. She wanted me to have my dad but HE'S the one who wasn't interested. He ABANDONED me. He wasn't even there for my birth. What Daniel did was crazy. And I certainly don't blame Miranda for being horrified. But you know what? I think I can safely speak for all of us who have absent fathers who don't give a damn about us, when I say that we would give ANYTHING for a father who loves us as much as Daniel clearly loves his kids. I would love having a father who would go to so much trouble just to be with me and be part of my life. I see so many good dads having their kids ripped away from them and it makes me so angry. Heartless mothers who want their children to suffer or just don't care if their children suffer because THEY are angry. My uncle (my mom's older brother) actually suffered this. His ex-wife threatened one time that if he ever left her she would make him miserable and he would never see his son again. And she followed through. After they split he never got to see his son. And back in 2018, my cousin died of an overdose after years of drug problems. He was only 25. And my uncle's horrible ex-wife? She wouldn't even let him anyway near the funeral. She wouldn't let this man bury his son. Even in the death of my cousin she just had to make my uncle suffer. Mothers who do this to their children should never get to reproduce in the first place. This is my stance and I know those of you with absent fathers can see where I'm coming from at least a little.

They did try to be friends, I have some memories of that. We even went to Disney World for my very first time when I was 4. But not all divorced parents stay friends. They at least stayed civil in front of me whether it was my mom picking me up from my weekend with dad or a graduation of mine. We even went to see Toy Story 3 in theaters, the three of us (I did have to sit in the middle of them. Not gonna lie, it was nice, but it also felt a little weird haha). Sometimes, divorce is what's best not only for the parents, but the kids too. Mine agreed they would rather be apart and figure out a way for me to spend time with my father on the weekends than be together for my sake and constantly fighting.
    My dad and I used to watch this movie all the time when I went to see him on the weekends.

    The merengue masque dripping was not in the script but he went with it right away. The conversation at restaurant table alone with Pierce Brosnan was all improv. Watch the movie again and see how many times Pierce is trying not to laugh.

    Robin Williams fought for the ending of this film.. Originally it had Daniel and Miranda getting back together. But with going through divorce himself (2kids) he thought it was important for the ending to be realistic..

    This will always be one of my favourite films. Robin Williams was such an amazing actor and his death still gets to me.
    And you were right that logically he should have waited the 3months to get joint custody but what would you choose, seeing your daughters every day or once a week for 3 months then every other week. And as for the new guy, yes you are right that he was lovely but you have to keep in mind that Daniel is still in love with his ex at this point so he is going to hate any man she is with, no matter how nice they actually are because at that point he was hoping to get back with her.

    I can’t remember if you’ve seen this one already, but if you are up for a difficult watch (that is, you’re ready to cry) try What Dreams May Come for a serious Robin Williams movie. IIRC it didn’t do well critically but it’s a beautiful, moving film.

    honestly JV I'm kinda torn because Mr. Bond feels like someone who's just nice on the surface and especially with what the guy at the pool said that he doesn't really care for children he'd probably be the person to be interested in the kids for like half a year, then get annoyed with them and try to isolate their mother 😅 and the biggest red flag is that he talks bad about the kid's father in front of other people which he'd likely also do in front of the kids after a while

    I have a very hard time with this movie. While I adore the movie. I also hate it because, as many other reactors point out, it shows how flawed our system is with divorce in the US. While it's true his character needed to make a better place for his kids and that obviously he and her just weren't in love anymore, in the end our system 98% of the time STILL lets the woman get the assets, the kids....etc.
    While I am happily married, I do know many couples who are divorced of course. Some with kids, some without. But the ones with kids, even in cases where the wife is terrible, she still got the kids. And the kids ended up becoming super out of control because the wife didn't care about them as much. And/or turned them against the ex-husband.
    I believe having two parents is so important. And custody should be decided based on many factors. I can also see why so many men require prenups before marriage now. You lose most of your life (even without kids) in a divorce. Especially in this modern world where its not usually a case of "Man works, woman takes care of the home". Everyones equal today but the law still is unequal sadly.
    My squabbling aside, I knew you would like the movie. Especially having kids of your own. You can feel for both parties.
