During production the studio suggested the parents get back together at the end of the movie. both Robin WIlliams & Sally Field objected saying it would give false hope to any kids watching with divorced parents. They reworked it, added that ending speech and the movie is much greater for it.
as a child of divorce, that ending scene with Mrs. Doubtfire reading the letter from the little girl always makes me tear up. this movie is such a timeless classic and I enjoy it just as much now as an adult as I did as a child ❤️
Being a child of divorced parents, this movie should have hit me a lot harder than it did. I still love and adore it, I am just surprised it doesn't break me, as by all rights it should. But I'll consider that a good thing, so I am not distracted away from Robin Williams' amazing performance. It may also be the fact that I was never kept from either my mom nor my dad. They would argue over everything... except me. I was always the one constant they always agreed upon, and I feel absolutely grateful for that. It always breaks my heart when divorced parents use their children against each other. Fortunately in this film, Miranda never quite went that route.
This is hands-down one of my favorite movies. Watching it now, after Robin Williams passed away, it’s just very bitter sweet. I always choke up with his words “You’re going to be alright, poppet. Bye-Bye.” 💔
The ending of this movie was spot-on, I’m glad they took the advice of Robin Williams and Sally Fields. My parents divorced when I was 8 and I think it made a lot of sense to be honest and acknowledge that most divorced couples don’t get back together but it doesn’t mean your life is over. Loved this reaction - not sure how I missed it but I’m glad I found it 👍

She's in the recent release 80 for Brady. Cute movie. Not great, but she's easily the best performance in it. Norma Rae is one of the first movies I ever saw. Dad was big on unions and insisted we see it when it came out
Ve Neil, the makeup artist who did the work on this movie, said the greatest moment of working this movie was when she had Robin Williams in full Mrs. Doubtfire makeup, and one of the extras came over to her and asked “Is Robin Williams going to be onset today?” When he was standing right next to her. She won the Oscar for makeup effects that year, too. She was also responsible for the makeup effects in the movie Beetlejuice.

RIP national treasure Robin Williams. This is easily one of his best, but he was also great in Good Will Hunting, Good Morning Vietnam, Aladdin, Dead Poets Society, The Fisher King, Awakenings, What Dreams May Come, Hook, and Insomnia. Some of those are also comedies (Williams got his start as a stand-up comic and then also for his work playing a goofy alien in the TV show Mork and Mindy), but most are actually dramas. Turns out he was an extremely talented dramatic actor, as well, which I think you can see a bit of in this film. Sadly, he ended up taking his own life, after struggling with depression for a long time. Sally Field is so cute I like her in this. She got her start in the 60s as "Gidget." Though one of my favorite roles of hers is in Forrest Gump which I know you've already seen. Pierce Brosnan is probably best known for playing James Bond for many years before the role was taken over by Daniel Craig. The youngest girl, Mara Wilson, stars in my favorite adaptation of a Roald Dahl Book, Matilda, but she hasn't acted much since growing up. Might be retired.
This movie is a not-so-subtle MRA movie. 😉 Fun Fact: During the scene when Mrs. Sellner comes to inspect Daniel's apartment and Daniel/Mrs. Doubtfire is serving her tea, the icing on his/her face is melting off. This was not intentional. The heat from the set lights melted the icing on his face and Robin Williams improvised the bulk of that scene. Bonus Fact: According to one biography, Robin Williams decided to test out the believability of his Mrs. Doubtfire character during filming by going as Mrs. Doubtfire into an adult bookstore and making a purchase. He was able to do so without being recognized.
I mean, there is an active vocal minority that tries to decry this movie as 'transphobic' and obviously to them Robin Williams' character is an 'irresponsible manchild' (when talking about how he should have no rights to his children, duh). Those are the times we live in...

I'll tell you a bittersweet personal anecdote about this movie: I was 13 or so when I saw this in theaters with my family and best friend after I had just competed (and lost) in a piano competition. Processing all those emotions during this movie came out a certain kinda way, and this movie made me experience for the first time in my life -- crying from laughter. Many years later, when I got the news that Robin Williams had passed away (my parents texted me the news while I was still lying in bed in my bachelor pad), it was the only time thus far that I got misty-eyed because a celebrity died. Man, Robin Williams was the best. He "got me" on both ends of the comedy/drama spectrum. May he rest in peace.
Robin Williams shaped my childhood. I miss him so much. I cried so much when he died. Such a horrible tragedy. But we’ll always have his films/stand ups/interviews to look back on and treasure. He was an incredibly kind and compassionate man in real life.

One of my favourite movies as a kid and of course alot of these jokes went over my head lol One of the best things about watching movies again where you're older is realizing how much adult humour is in so many films. Stuart is played by Irish actor Pierce Brosnan who also played 007 in four James Bond films. He also directed the first two Harry Potter films as well but with once you get into Harry Potter there's no turning back lol
I remember reading this book when I was in middle school the book was called "Madame Doubtfire" by Anne Fine. I was good read. I was at the theater when it came out as a movie. Robin Williams is amazing actor. I always loved his films. My all time favorite film of his is Hook.
The genius of Mrs. Doubtfire is that there are no real villains. There are people with conflicting goals that creates tension, but there are no 'bad guys.' They could have easily made the mom or the boyfriend out to be horrible people that you wanted to see lose. The closest they came, IMHO, is when the boyfriend told another person that Daniel was a loser. When I saw this in the theater, I said, "Okay. NOW he's going to show his true colors...but the writers didn't take him that way. I thought the lack of a true villain made it a much better story.

Robin was soooo amazing! But the most amazing thing about his acting was that he ad libbed the vast majority of his lines in everything he ever did, and movie producers literally wrote the script around his ad libs, even on animated movies he did (like playing the genie on Aladdin fir example) he was nothing short of amazing and is definitely missed 😥 RIP Robin
One of the many great things about Robin Williams, when he starred in a movie, he required that the studio hire a certain number of homeless people for the production.
Fun Robin Williams Fact - His early career, starting in improv and stand up would see him land a role in Happy Days, from which the spin off 'Mork and Mindy was born. Recorded on stage, Robin Williams and the director had an interesting relationship to say the least, as his improv background and incredibly creative mind was constantly deviating from the script, but it was also comedy gold. Television programs in those days were filmed using three cameras. These were huge pieces of equipment and the industry standard was that they were static, one focused on one actor's face, another on the second actor's face, and a third covering a wide shot, with all three feeds then being cut together post production. Early in filming, Robin launched into several minutes of improv, moving all over the stage as he did and it was genius, hilarious, the director loved it. When he eventually yelled cut, he went up to one of the cameramen and said 'Tell me you got that', to which the reply came 'He didn't come by here'. So upset was the director, he decided this couldn't continue and promptly arranged for a fourth camera, whose sole job it was to follow Robin and film everything he did so not a single moment was lost. Soon after this camera setup became standard and has been used to this day to record tv programs. All because of Robin Williams.
She may not have been the "bad guy" in the begining, but what absolutely made her the bad guy was doing things like: Dropping the kids off an hour late and arriving to pick them up an hour early, which cuts his time with his kids on his time by 2 hours. And there's really not anything he could do about that.
I watched this movie so many times I hadn't even caught the reference to Robin Williams' other movie, Dead Poet's Society. When he dropped his dentures in the drink he says "carpe dentum, seize the teeth". That's a funny little twist to the line "carpe diem, seize the day". I hadn't even noticed that until I saw this video.

As biased as I am, because I'm kind of an Oscar nerd, Robin Williams is terrific in a film called "Good Will Hunting," from 1997. He ended up winning the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor, and two of the other actors in the film, childhood friends Matt Damon (who plays Will) and Ben Affleck (who plays one of his friends in the film) wrote the film together and won in the writing category.
The judge makes a good point. Daniel really had to be much stricter with his children to stay in Miranda's good graces, and he probably had to plead insanity just to have a chance of stopping the judge from sending him to prison.

I grew up in the Bay Area, and the restaurant they ate at "Bridges" is in Danville CA, 20 minutes from where I used to live, and grew up. Ate there a couple of times for my annivarsary. Sadly it's no longer there, at least it has a different owner, and a different name.
u should have seen the inspiration for this movie. An 80's movie with Dustin Hoffman called Tootsie. Robin Williams said in an interview that he had to get some advice from Hoffman on pretending to be a woman. U really should watch Nine Months next. in my opinion Robin is way more funny! Also, u should see Robin in one of his thrillers One Hour Photo.
Another one with a similar premise is Some Like It Hot from 1959. It was probably Marilyn Monroe's best role, and perhaps Jack Lemmon's best role as well. And it has one of my favorite endings of any films.

I understand some people suffer depression and feel isolated and alone... but alone is one thing he never was. Further, he left his daughter Zelda behind... giving no consideration to how his death would affect her. I'm sorry if anyone thinks that is unfair... but I cannot forgive him.

He had been diagnosed with a serious illness, one that was going to rob him of his independence, and eventually his life. He decided to skip all the suffering, and go out before the loss of dignity & basic function. The way he saw it, he had already lived a full life, done all the things he wanted to do, his quality of life was going to go downhill, and he was ready to go. You mentioned his daughter & how this would affect her; she actually had to make statements & address all the comments like yours, where people were upset, and calling Robin, selfish. She very articulately shared her thoughts and feelings, about this, and they were the complete opposite of yours. She thought it incredibly selfish, of everyone else, to ask someone suffering so greatly, to live longer, just for their own comfort & selfish reasons. If you'd like to read her exact words, the letter can be found online. Me personally, would I want a world where Robin Williams is still alive? Sure. Would I want that, even if it meant his suffering & unhappiness? No. That would be selfish. Bottom line, it was his life, he had a right to decide how he wanted to live it.

If you want to hear Sally Field going absolutely ham with her voice, you should watch Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey. She plays the voice of the cat, appropriately named "Sassy" and it is an absolute joy to listen to. Plus Michael J. Fox as one of the dogs

Your movie list is HUGE! I hope you're doing this as a full-time job, 5 days a week. I don't know if these Robin Williams movies are on your list yet, but they are all fantastic: The World According To Garp, Hook (he plays Peter Pan), Dead Again (supporting role), and Awakenings. I believe you've already seen him in Good Will Hunting and probably Punch Adams. His drama One Hour Photo is compelling. Sally Field was The Flying Nun and Gidget on TV, and won an Emmy for Sybil. Her biggest role is probably in Steel Magnolias. You never saw Mork & Mindy on TV? That was Williams' big break starting with a guest role on Happy Days. The little girl played the title role in the classic film Matilda, and the older sister you've already seen in Independence Day as Russell Case's daughter. The scraggle-voiced brother was in that movie too, at the cable company in Manhattan.
Yeah this was a great movie. There was actually a deleted scene that took place after the mom found out he was Mrs. Doubtfire where they were really fighting again and the kids were upstairs listening but they decided it was too much for a family movie so they cut it which was probably a good idea. Its also why Daniel decided to wait outside at the end of the movie
As in all Robin Williams movies, so much is improvised. "The run by fruiting" and the very long talk about power tool in the bedroom was all Robin Williams impro. Watch again and you will.see Pierce Brosnan having a hard time not to laugh and looking at Robin like "what the heck?"

"Moscow on the Hudson" (1984) is a not-very-popular Robin Williams movie. I quickly managed to suspend my disbelief, as the tale of "Vladimir Ivanoff" took us from "Moscow" (Munich) to the utterly strange New York City. Most (cynical) reviewers called it "Mork" does Manhattan." It may not be as intense as "One Hour Photo" (2002) or as exuberant as "Theodore Roosevelt" in the "Night at the Museum" movie series, but it is worth a look.
This was always such a great film. In this role, I always wished Robin Williams could be my dad. However, as I got older, even though my dad was not as hip, or into cross-dressing to play a nanny as Robin Williams was, my dad was willing to sacrifice so much for us kids. So, that is something that I always appreciate about this film. The comedy is still great and I love the line "It was a drive-by fruiting!".

I'll tell you a bittersweet personal anecdote about this movie: I was 13 or so when I saw this in theaters with my family and best friend after I had just competed (and lost) in a piano competition. Processing all those emotions during this movie came out a certain kinda way, and this movie made me experience for the first time in my life -- crying from laughter. Many years later, when I got the news that Robin Williams had passed away (my parents texted me the news while I was still lying in bed in my bachelor pad), it was the only time thus far that I got misty-eyed because a celebrity died. Man, Robin Williams was the best. He "got me" on both ends of the comedy/drama spectrum. May he rest in peace.

Robin Williams shaped my childhood. I miss him so much. I cried so much when he died. Such a horrible tragedy. But we’ll always have his films/stand ups/interviews to look back on and treasure. He was an incredibly kind and compassionate man in real life.

One of my favourite movies as a kid and of course alot of these jokes went over my head lol One of the best things about watching movies again where you're older is realizing how much adult humour is in so many films. Stuart is played by Irish actor Pierce Brosnan who also played 007 in four James Bond films. Natalie the youngest daughter is played by Mara Wilson who was in Matilda from 1996 another fun film that has a special place in many peoples hearts. Miranda is played by Sally Field who also played Mrs. Gump in
Forrest Gump which released a year after Mrs Doubtfire, imagine see was in and out of playing both characters filming back to back. Lydia Hillard the oldest Daughter is played Lisa Jakub who also acted in Independence Day.

I remember reading this book when I was in middle school the book was called "Madame Doubtfire" by Anne Fine. I was good read. I was at the theater when it came out as a movie. Robin Williams is amazing actor. I always loved his films. My all time favorite film of his is Hook.

The genius of Mrs. Doubtfire is that there are no real villains. There are people with conflicting goals that creates tension, but there are no 'bad guys.' They could have easily made the mom or the boyfriend out to be horrible people that you wanted to see lose. The closest they came, IMHO, is when the boyfriend told another person that Daniel was a loser. When I saw this in the theater, I said, "Okay. NOW he's going to show his true colors...but the writers didn't take him that way. I thought the lack of a true villain made it a much better story.

Robin was soooo amazing! But the most amazing thing about his acting was that he ad libbed the vast majority of his lines in everything he ever did, and movie producers literally wrote the script around his ad libs, even on animated movies he did (like playing the genie on Aladdin fir example) he was nothing short of amazing and is definitely missed 😥 RIP Robin

One of the many great things about Robin Williams, when he starred in a movie, he required that the studio hire a certain number of homeless people for the production.
Fun Robin Williams Fact - His early career, starting in improv and stand up would see him land a role in Happy Days, from which the spin off 'Mork and Mindy was born. Recorded on stage, Robin Williams and the director had an interesting relationship to say the least, as his improv background and incredibly creative mind was constantly deviating from the script, but it was also comedy gold. Television programs in those days were filmed using three cameras. These were huge pieces of equipment and the industry standard was that they were static, one focused on one actor's face, another on the second actor's face, and a third covering a wide shot, with all three feeds then being cut together post production. Early in filming, Robin launched into several minutes of improv, moving all over the stage as he did and it was genius, hilarious, the director loved it. When he eventually yelled cut, he went up to one of the cameramen and said 'Tell me you got that', to which the reply came 'He didn't come by here'.
So upset was the director, he decided this couldn't continue and promptly arranged for a fourth camera, whose sole job it was to follow Robin and film everything he did so not a single moment was lost. Soon after this camera setup became standard and has been used to this day to record tv programs. All because of Robin Williams.

She may not have been the "bad guy" in the begining, but what absolutely made her the bad guy was doing things like: Dropping the kids off an hour late and arriving to pick them up an hour early, which cuts his time with his kids on his time by 2 hours.

I watched this movie so many times I hadn't even caught the reference to Robin Williams' other movie, Dead Poet's Society.
When he dropped his dentures in the drink he says "carpe dentum, seize the teeth". That's a funny little twist to the line "carpe diem, seize the day". I hadn't even noticed that until I saw this video.

As biased as I am, because I'm kind of an Oscar nerd, Robin Williams is terrific in a film called "Good Will Hunting," from 1997. He ended up winning the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor, and two of the other actors in the film, childhood friends Matt Damon (who plays Will) and Ben Affleck (who plays one of his friends in the film) wrote the film together and won in the writing category.

I grew up in the Bay Area, and the restaurant they ate at "Bridges" is in Danville CA, 20 minutes from where I used to live, and grew up. Ate there a couple of times for my annivarsary. Sadly it's no longer there, at least it has a different owner, and a different name.

u should have seen the inspiration for this movie. An 80's movie with Dustin Hoffman called Tootsie. Robin Williams said in an interview that he had to get some advice from Hoffman on pretending to be a woman. U really should watch Nine Months next. in my opinion Robin is way more funny! Also, u should see Robin in one of his thrillers One Hour Photo.

Another one with a similar premise is Some Like It Hot from 1959. It was probably Marilyn Monroe's best role, and perhaps Jack Lemmon's best role as well. And it has one of my favorite endings of any films.

Robin Williams has always been one of my favorite actors, favorite people. I'd always dreamed of meeting him someday. I am still extremely depressed over his loss and I'll never get that chance

Unfortuantely... as much as I love Robin Williams' performances and will continue to enjoy them... I cannot forgive him for the way he went out. I understand some people suffer depression and feel isolated and alone... but alone is one thing he never was. Further, he left his daughter Zelda behind... giving no consideration to how his death would affect her. I'm sorry if anyone thinks that is unfair... but I cannot forgive him.
@@k1productions87 It's true Robin Williams had suffered on & off with depression, but depression wasn't the reason for him taking his life. He had been diagnosed with a serious illness, one that was going to rob him of his independence, and eventually his life. He decided to skip all the suffering, and go out before the loss of dignity & basic function. The way he saw it, he had already lived a full life, done all the things he wanted to do, his quality of life was going to go downhill, and he was ready to go.
You mentioned his daughter & how this would affect her; she actually had to make statements & address all the comments like yours, where people were upset, and calling Robin, selfish. She very articulately shared her thoughts and feelings, about this, and they were the complete opposite of yours. She thought it incredibly selfish, of everyone else, to ask someone suffering so greatly, to live longer, just for their own comfort & selfish reasons. If you'd like to read her exact words, the letter can be found online.
Me personally, would I want a world where Robin Williams is still alive? Sure. Would I want that, even if it meant his suffering & unhappiness? No. That would be selfish. Bottom line, it was his life, he had a right to decide how he wanted to live it.

@@k1productions87 His daughter addressed this immediately after his passing, because so many people were lashing out calling him selfish. Of course they were upset because of his passing, but they didn't have the facts, or the total understanding of his situation. He still had depression issues, but also a serious illness. He was tired...sick...and ready to go. Sad, but honestly, I get it. Sometimes, not living is more humane, than years & years of unhappy suffering.

I hope you watch many more Robin Williams movies! We lost him tragically in 2014, and I miss him.
He's the voice of the genie in Disney's Aladdin, and there are lots of good comedies he's been in, but more than any other actor I can think of, he could do serious roles just as well as funny ones.

@@ScarlettM Unfortunately Gene Hackman was kinda wasted in that role. He did good for what he was given, but he's done so many much better performances. To me, it just stands out among everything else truly exceptional in that film.

I don't know if these Robin Williams movies are on your list yet, but they are all fantastic: The World According To Garp, Hook (he plays Peter Pan), Dead Again (supporting role), and Awakenings. I believe you've already seen him in Good Will Hunting and probably Punch Adams. His drama One Hour Photo is compelling.
Sally Field was The Flying Nun and Gidget on TV, and won an Emmy for Sybil. Her biggest role is probably in Steel Magnolias.
You never saw Mork & Mindy on TV? That was Williams' big break starting with a guest role on Happy Days. The little girl played the title role in the classic film Matilda, and the older sister you've already seen in Independence Day as Russell Case's daughter. The scraggle-voiced brother was in that movie too, at the cable company in Manhattan.

Yeah this was a great movie. There was actually a deleted scene that took place after the mom found out he was Mrs. Doubtfire where they were really fighting again and the kids were upstairs listening but they decided it was too much for a family movie so they cut it which was probably a good idea. Its also why Daniel decided to wait outside at the end of the movie

As in all Robin Williams movies, so much is improvised. "The run by fruiting" and the very long talk about power tool in the bedroom was all Robin Williams impro. Watch again and you will.see Pierce Brosnan having a hard time not to laugh and looking at Robin like "what the heck?"

"Moscow on the Hudson" (1984) is a not-very-popular Robin Williams movie. I quickly managed to suspend my disbelief, as the tale of "Vladimir Ivanoff" took us from "Moscow" (Munich) to the utterly strange New York City. Most (cynical) reviewers called it "Mork" does Manhattan." It may not be as intense as "One Hour Photo" (2002) or as exuberant as "Theodore Roosevelt" in the "Night at the Museum" movie series, but it is worth a look.

This was always such a great film. In this role, I always wished Robin Williams could be my dad. However, as I got older, even though my dad was not as hip, or into cross-dressing to play a nanny as Robin Williams was, my dad was willing to sacrifice so much for us kids. So, that is something that I always appreciate about this film. The comedy is still great and I love the line "It was a drive-by fruiting!".
