Excellent video and rather nice pictures! The Tri-Elmer WATE is an excellent lens, but for my own applications I’d rather go with other options since I’m not a big fan of ultra wide angle lenses. However, the now out of production Tri-Elmer 28-35-50 MATE lens is my go-to lens when it comes to travel photography. And yes, I would like to see another video on the topic.
I love your own photography mixed in your always excellent, no nonsense reviews. I've never even touched a Leica in my 75 years. My dad did own an Exa SLR without a pentaprism.
Thanks Barry, after all those years its time for you to finally get your hands on a Leica :) Why don't you rent one for a couple of days and try it out? Many thanks for your kind words.
Your videos are great and very informative, thank you. And yes I would like to see a lens review of the tri elmar compared to the SL version of the wide zoom
Hi, I too, enjoy your videos. They are well done and informative. In this video you mention that the WATE is not a 'zoom' lens and that it has only 3 focal lengths: 16, 18, and 21. In fact you can set the lens at any spot between 16 and 21 mm, so it is indeed a 'zoom' lens. I have they lens and basically only use the 3 set lengths. Works great on my M-P (240) with an EVF. I do not have the cumbersome optical finder, so do not use the lens on the M9. I recently acquired an SL2 and have yet to use th eWATE with than camera. In fact, I think that since I often use a low position for when using the WATE, I'll stick with the M-P since the EVF can be titled as needed. For nigh long exposures the M-P is not really useful so the SL2 will fill that need. Thanks again for your videos. Jean-Michel
Yes re. the WATE. I have the other Tri-Elmar, the 28-35-50mm MATE…it isn’t a zoom lens in disguise. But it does have an unintentional closeup setting between 50 & 28, at around 40mm, that I like to use with a Visoflex EVF attached to my camera. Nice for close portraits with slightly accentuated facial features.
Just encounter this video piece. GREAT picture👏👏👏👍👍👍. Pkanning to get tge M11, but as you did in the second one ysing 27mP, I can use a lower resolution for shooting stars.
Man I love your videos!!! they are better than other youtuber's videos, I love Leica cameras... I want to ask you if you have a webside where We could find the content of your videos, I mean I would like to learn more about photography (don't know too much), but your content It's too big so It'll be great if We can watch in order your videos to learn in a pregressive way... thak you!!!
I just checked my Camera dealer here in Holland, and checked the prices on the M10-R and the M11 Here, the price difference is only 200 euros 8350 - 8150 What do you think about that, thought the price of the M 10 series would have dropped a bit by now !!! 🤨
In the used market it is way lower! For new, there are some shops willing to sell M10R price in the range of 9000USD. At least from where I am from. The M11 is still way higher than the M10R
Another great video, though i don’t’ shoot at night I did try the Tri-Elmar 16-18-21/4 on my M11 and for landscape use @16mm F8 I was not that impressed with the results, smearing in the corners, I then tried the newer Voigtlsnder 15mm lens and the results were excellent.
Various people asked for a review so I will make one next weeks and then show the good and the not so good of this lens :) I nevertheless like it, in particular for the type of photos I showed in the video :)
Thanks William, the higher ISO makes the stars a bit more glow and the sensor can do higher ISO values easily :) And you can choose your shutter speed in a way that stars are not trailing in a disturbing way.
Ha! You got me :) ... this took me longer than I wanted due to different priorities but you can count with the video in the next three weeks, promise! I am also working on another related video, namely, shooting the Hasselblad CFV II 50c on the classical Hasselblad 503CW - great experience :)
Hi Matt, thanks for all the great Leica videos and reviews. I have no doubt about the M11’s potential, same on the M10R, of which I’m a proud owner myself. Evidently you’re a talented photographer and have managed to find a good use for the WATE. Having said that, as an architect and erstwhile architectural photographer I have to say that the Tri-Elmar is basically just a paperweight when considered for architectural photography. I bought it used for around $3,700 and it still breaks my heart, don’t how said I would’ve been if I had paid full retail. This lens is not only expensive, and on the slow side, but the real killer is the fact that it can render a straight line. Images come out full of mustache-shaped distortions that can’t really be fixed even with DxO, Capture One or Lightroom presets. I guess one could put to good use in some applications as you did, but I wouldn’t dare to photograph anything with straight lines with this lens. I guess to each his own but I’d rather use and recommend the Zeiss 15, or any of the wide-angle Voigtlanders [10, 12, or 15], and save both money and headaches…. My two cents.
Thanks - interesting comment. I do not use the Tri-Elmar for architecture so I can neiter fully agree nor disagree but fully trust your judgment. For architecture (if the image counts) I go with Shift Lenses to have perspective control. There will be an interesting video coming to my channel coming weeks which you will like, using the Hasselblad HTS 1.5 Shift Adapter.

Yes, please do a review of the Tri Elmar
Consider it done, will do it next weeks.
Beautiful night sky shooting!
Thank you Lucy :)

Thanks Ammar, I will go for it.
Thank you for another nice video. How would you compare noise performance of M11 with raw file set set at 36Mpx against M10-R? Thank you

Very interesting comment, many thanks for that. Will play around and see myself :)
I just bought that lens, so yes I´d appreciate an in depth review very much!!!
Ok - number 4 :) Will do it next weeks.
Another wonderful video, I think you need to do an in depth review of the 16-18-21, thank you
Ok - noted and will consider :)

Love a review on the WATE lens as I keep looking at it but never had the chance to try on
Ok Peter, seems you are not alone so the Tri-Elmar will find its way into my video pipeline :) Thanks!

Agree with Melon's comment - second hand M10-R is a really good choice.
Yes, please do a specific review of the trielmsr lenses.
It is online :) See here: ua-cam.com/video/E3Gm3nhVaQ4/v-deo.html

Ok - noted and will look into it. Its a great lens!
I’m surprised how high your iso is set. I shoot night stars at iso 50 on my SL 601.
Thanks William, the higher ISO makes the stars a bit more glow and the sensor can do higher ISO values easily :) And you can choose your shutter speed in a way that stars are not trailing in a disturbing way.
What ever happened to your x1dii hts 1.5 tilt shift adaptor video you mentioned of releasing?

How about the time of the on camera noise reduction? Can you turn it off?
Keeping my M10-R, M9 and of course my original M2 with 50 Elmar purchased in the 1960's.......
:)

Meant to say “CAN’T RENDER A STRAIGHT LINE”… Autocorrect betrayed me once more…

😍🙏🏼💫
You should make a comparison with the X1D...
I think you have all Leica models
