I was accidentally the slave who bought alot of the boots for those "insider traders" My peak of playing rs was around this update. I pked mostly. C boots were around 200-500. I bought them frequently. Around 2-4weeks before the update I noticed climbing boots weren't buying and were selling instantly for 800-1k+. I did the math and I realized I could make around 1m/hour buying them from tenzig and selling to g/e so I immediately figured out the most efficient process of buying climbing boots from Tenzig and started selling around 650 of them on the g/e per hour. After a few hours of the boots continuing to sell for around 1k+ I realized this wasn't just some weird temporary inefficiency in the market and I contacted one of my smarter friends and told him to make a bot to buy climbing boots. We botted this for weeks. After the 2nd or 3rd day me and my friend always wondered why we were able to still make such good money from it. I always told him that it was the community as a whole finally realizing the value of the boots combined with the supply of them slowly dwindling because they were so cheap nobody would pick them up from pk loots and they would despawn, we also thought we were probably the only ones smart enough to realize the gp/hour that could be made from buying them from tenzig. On the day of the update me and him realized we were far from the smartest ones in the game. We each made around 200-500m from selling boots for the 2-3weeks before the update, and on the day of the update we each made around another 300m from the boots we had in our bot's banks we hadn't sold yet. I remember seeing a mod post back then that said the highest amount any single account had was around 10k Also should add another reason why climbing boots was very popular back then was because it was a standard boot slot item for mostly all pures. Even my pures were sorta well stocked with them(had around 700 boots) I would grab climbing boots as part of my dailies back then.
a way to increase price of climbing boots, would be to make old climbing boots untradeable variants so they wont be stacked and merched on price changes. a possible idea on some items
never really made sense to increase the price as players who already had the boots would just keep using them, so if they really wanted players to swap to rune boots or dragon boots, the logical thing would have been to nerf them or make the other 2 boot options more appealing (remove their debuffs or such).. The fact the climbing boots were intended to be items for the quest, the obvious solution would be to nerf them to remove their desired stat bonuses or include hard debuffs on them so players only use them and keep for the quest and maybe some equivalent lower level content, but not keep them forever for pvp, etc.
I think it was a good idea to increase price of climbing boots, similar to how Gmaul price got increased. But why on earth did they make a new item 'Rock climbing boots' and then turn old climbing boots into the new item?? They could just leave everyone with the regular worthless climbing boots and have you pay for the upgrade (similar to the Gmaul update I think). Also, price should be 30k or something like that.
I know this video is old but i can 100% confirm the highest amount of boots on an account was well over 1800, the 91k estimate seems about right though. I was a hoarder and had 14k personally, it was the fastest I'd ever made money in my entire life (irl too if converting to 1usd/mill lol) that wasn't just pure drop luck. It changed the way I played the game forever from that point on.
I was in Foe (the pure clan) from 2006-2010.. Part of the requirements was to keep a LOT of return sets in your tab... So when you die in a fight, you can regear as quickly as possible. I made ~200m off of climbing boots, and even more off of the zulrah teleport update in old-school. Gotta love profiting off of jagex terrible ideas.
Just an FYI, climbing boots were more OP and objectively better than rune boots. Pures can use them, same str bonus as rune boots, and can be used to brid as they have no negative bonuses. They also look much better than rune boots. Rune boots minimal def bonus was meh + required 40 def. for how good they were, it made sense that they be as if not more expensive than rune boots
They were like 500-700 on the g.e. I remember I thru some in for well above the med price and they didn't sell so I left them in over the weekend and when I had come back a few days later they had updated it

It raised pure risk, but it griefed everyone else. Because it essentially made it a pure risk item, since if you were not a low def pure you may as well just PK in rune boots, they were cheaper. They should have been a little cheaper than rune boots. Because then you have a choice, cheaper option or take the def bonus from rune boots.

Its just really bizarre logic and that runefest panel just doesn't make it sound better. Like out of all the weirdness about it, its just that high alchemy thing for how much the boots were worth. As a dev had to go in and put in that exact value for how much gold you get out of it.

I know 1800 is wrong, I was in Soul Hunter clan. We where a big deep wildly clan and our leader PowJR had more than that..... hell most of our clan had well over 1000 of them each as we needed so many return stacks for when we cleaned other clans out in big all night fights.
I always thought they where junk and just kept collecting for ages. I didn't realize they gave STR bonus haha. I always spent the 200K on rune boots. I sucked at pking so I constantly died and overtime when I would get kills I would keep them. I can't remember how many had but it was enough to buy an AGS.
Made my first green cash stack from this. I sucked at pking so never really profitted at the time (I would farm chaos druids for gp when I would die and repeat). I logged in and was told about this, I had enough climbing boot alchs to buy an AGS :) I was so happy at the time.
It’s really shameful watching Jagex jump down this same path of lying to players again. I guess losing their entire player base multiple times wasn’t enough of a lesson :(.

I remember a bug back in 2009 or so where you could write a "ч" or something like this into chat and the whole game would crash, like for everybody seeing that "ч" symbol 🧐
There were so many better decisions to make here, why did they go for the absolutely worst one?! There was definitely some form of ulterior motives among one of the JMods for that to happen. Even giving them the benefit of the doubt that it was an error from miscommunication and such, it would mean that the people that worked on that update had an immense lack of game knowledge and care, for someone who's supposed to be among the best at it.

Even my pures were sorta well stocked with them(had around 700 boots) I would grab climbing boots as part of my dailies back then.
Great job on the video, especially with those tons of sources you used 😁
Thank you!!
Bush used to play osrs
Which Bush?

I've heard that rumor as well haha. I'd love to find out more about it one day. :P
Well if mod mark says it's false you gotta believe him. He's always looking out for the greater good of the community
Hey mudkip how many hours would u say u play in a week. Just osrs.

a way to increase price of climbing boots, would be to make old climbing boots untradeable variants so they wont be stacked and merched on price changes. a possible idea on some items
Thanks Runescape for teaching me the stock market
never really made sense to increase the price as players who already had the boots would just keep using them, so if they really wanted players to swap to rune boots or dragon boots, the logical thing would have been to nerf them or make the other 2 boot options more appealing (remove their debuffs or such)..
Also, price should be 30k or something like that.
svew was a legend on the bug abuse forums back in the day
I know this video is old but i can 100% confirm the highest amount of boots on an account was well over 1800, the 91k estimate seems about right though. I was a hoarder and had 14k personally, it was the fastest I'd ever made money in my entire life (irl too if converting to 1usd/mill lol) that wasn't just pure drop luck. It changed the way I played the game forever from that point on.
" we had a handful of players , maybe one or two " you can tell that was lie
I remember I thru some in for well above the med price and they didn't sell so I left them in over the weekend and when I had come back a few days later they had updated it
opera gx is the best browser for gamers rn.. you need to tweak some settings though in order to completely transfer your bookmarks+saved passwords...been using it for almost a year now highly recommend it
Same here, I can't go back. I've set it up to be locked down for privacy and security using a combo of Adguard, PrivacyBadger and HTTPS Everywhere with Cloudflare's DNS-over-HTTPS (and Cloudflare's DNS for my system as a whole). Combine that with all its fantastic features and I really just can't go back.
Is it just basically a rebranding of the original Opera browser?
@@matthewstein1110 It's Opera with a lot more features, mostly aimed at gamers. It performs the same as standard Opera and has all of its base features, but a load more on top of them. Unless you want a more professional/serious-looking UI, I definitely don't see any reason to not use GX at this point, honestly.
@@jakobfel2 Thanks for the reply!
@@matthewstein1110 No problem! Definitely give it a go if you have the chance, I wish more people were interested in trying it out. It may not be as privacy-centric as, say, Vivaldi or Firefox but it's definitely better than using Chrome and it has more features natively built in than virtually any other browser.
I remember when this happened. Also, I remember watching logdotzip back in the day, holy nostalgia.
1:02 is that the Bruce "B is for Brave" Greene on your follow list? and the Law Dog too? have we uncovered evidence that Colonello is a Inside Gaming/Funhaus fan?
Oh big time. Haven’t watched in a few months but I watched Funhaus and IG every day for years.
Hearing the name logdotzip brought me back a good few years, wow!
Ahhh yes, mod Mark, the mod known for his honesty
mark donalds LMAO
Lol i knew it was climbing boots before the video had started
His 18k number was an absolute lie that me and my other pking friends called bs on, each of us alone had like 5k+ of those boots, though the most I knew of personally was guy who had like 15k of them and there was no chance he had the most.
I had a bills worth of those boots in my bank when a friend told me about it, at the time I never thought I’d play again , here i am back in full force lol ,
And now they're nerfing the blowpipe because 'its too cheap for its power'. How hard is it to understand that monetary value shouldn't be taken into account when balancing things? Its the accessibility that should be addressed, in the case of BP gold farmers
It so strange to me that it was recently I found out Svew was a bug abuser. Back in the day I thought he was just a bad ass level 36 or 38 with a firecape that frequented w59. There use to be a community of of regulars on worlds that you got use to seeing, I sorta miss that now that everyone hops to any world to find open resources spots.
If youve ever combo eatn you are a bug abuser
This should have been rolled back.. I remember when this happened.. rares and high level equipment went up in price like crazy...
8:55 he's clearly reading from a teleprompter.. I know that doesn't necessarily mean anything, except that, whether it really was a lie or not, no one would really know for sure, as it was a predetermined answer that they were instructed to read.
I doubt there was a conspiracy there was a trade restriction during 2010? Unless they waited until 2011 to sell
The trade restriction was long gone during 2010. Stop spreading misinformation clown.
fixing mistakes 6 years later seems to be a thing with jagex :D
Make blowpipe worth 75k
Its just really bizarre logic and that runefest panel just doesn't make it sound better. Like out of all the weirdness about it, its just that high alchemy thing for how much the boots were worth. As a dev had to go in and put in that exact value for how much gold you get out of it.
Hey I may have found a new bot they’re teleing to castle wars with staff of airs, some over 60 mage, 30 combat and 50 construction I’ve seen many of themin American worlds in the past couple days
Wasn’t this around the timeframe that MasterCard sent in that shadow ceo? And he only stuck around for 15 months
Yup he was around when this happened
@@ColonelloRS if I hadda guess they had something to do with it. Removed wildy, added trade limits and the GE and he got the boot
I REALLY FUCKING LOVE THE OPERA GX WEB BROWSER OMG BEST BROWSER EVER AND YOUR THE BEST RUNESCAPE CONTENT CREATOR 10/10 WOULD SMASH
I remember this update. That was so long ago I forgot about it.
This is why I play ironman now.
7:30 my boy did u just say that nearly 10 years later; "this is under investigation"
one of my friends told me about it before the update but i didn't want to risk my bank on it (30m) so i bought maybe 20 because i was pure anyways so could use them, wish i bought more now :P
I remember I was studying for my GCE O levels when this drama happened lol
i miss the early days of Sythe and websites like that. it aint the same anymore Skew was the shit!
I guess losing their entire player base multiple times wasn’t enough of a lesson :(.
welp time to load up a video while i knock out death plateau. Well looks like i found the perfect video for this quest lmao.
The opera browser is insane. I like it alot! I love the free add block section and the free vpn. First time i need to say that but thanks alot for making that add! :)
Couldn't agree more! Wanted to add a section about the free VPN and adblocker but didn't want the ad to be too long.
every 90s kid said CLIMBING BOOTS! out loud
Crazy that that’s how logdotzip got his stsrt

dont forget when zulrah teleports became rarer.
Dude that browser is dope af
Agreed! The design is so sleek
Wow. Instant inflation.
one time there was no buy limit on fire battlestaffs and you could buy them for 7k each or so, clearly someone trying to hide his tracks by making it not too obvious.
Binging the shit out of your content mate, great channel idea and excellent execution.
Thank you!! :D
I remember a bug back in 2009 or so where you could write a "ч" or something like this into chat and the whole game would crash, like for everybody seeing that "ч" symbol 🧐
Ah yes, the legendary Mu Glitch. Crazy days.
i love the brownser idk if it important but i used ur link
Ah yes we investigated ourselves and found we are innocent.
They changed the price of climbing boots in rs3 too a while ago. no one cared because it affected very few.
''a handful of players'' ''maybe 1 or 2'' ok markdonalds
When he said “they were riots all over RuneScape” I imagined everyone fighting with apple pies xD
If you had 100 for pking purposes, an easy 7.5mil which wasn't the easiest to get back then
Make a video about how petty jagex can be when someone questions them
this is the kind of incompetence the runescape team still has to this day
Hol’ up. Log used to make rs content?
Yup! He’s erased seemingly all of it from the internet

The fact he just casually said “there were players who had a unbelievable amounts of boots in their bank and made bank off of it” who casually has that many just out of no where?? Lol smh
