Understanding audio is crucial to becoming a content creator on Twitch, and it’s also one of the biggest barriers because people can’t tell when it is bad, or if they can they don’t know how to fix it.
Before I became an online Content Creator and Streamer, I was in the film industry for over six years, and audio was always something that stumped people despite it being really easy once you get the basics of it down.
Today I am going to help you get set up and sound like a pro on your stream.

To truly make your microphone sound amazing, you’re going to want to learn to use filters in your broadcast software. Now all three of these filters exist in slobs and obs, I’d recommend using them almost all the time, They are Noise Suppression, A limiter, and a Noise gate.
The style of this video is similar to Alpha Gaming and Gaming Careers in parts. A large influence on this series has come from content creators like Wild4games and Nutty.

Hey #earlygang! Hopefully the message of this video comes across pretty simple, you can't beat high quality microphone or audio setups, but at the end of the day when you're just starting out, there is no point spending hundreds, or thousands of dollars on gear that you don't need. Hope everyone is having a good week so far!
wow
hmm I was wondering what the brand of the ten dollar mic this was. I'm interested in trying out streaming but due to my budget its headphones with mic 50 dollars and below. The other option for me cheap mic like this for streaming
Uhm, I just invented new monitors and headphones yesterday, and I can beat the supposed "high-end" setups. Fairly easily and with much less expense. There is absolutely no way I would buy anything UAD for instance, because of their atrocious policies of not supplying guarantees with their "high-end" hardware, because they try to bundle demo software with it to try and use that as an excuse for their inferiority.
I'll make a simple prototype that beats the shit out of $3-4k Sennheisers.
Absolutely love the call outs towards influencers making their audience spend more money than they need to. I get they need to earn money to make a living, but their audience very most likely has less to spend too
yeah right? i dont have money to spend on a fx3 for video streaming like them or 4 action cameras and a drone. I dont even know how they get it, some small streamers have already evertything and im here trying with my usb-c mic trying to have more quality lol
Your channel is the holy grail for helping out beginner streamers. Thank you so much for all your videos 🙌🏽
Watching videos like this really help me understand my mic and make it sound nice. It was $30 and currently I have no need to buy a fancy one. Great tips!
I'm using this video as a motivator to get my OBS and mic setup going on my gaming laptop. I've watched a few other videos that pretty much cover the same topic here, however when it comes to streaming setups I like to have a 2nd and 3rd opinion and take a little bit of advice from each. Also in the budget mic group but it's pretty solid for an under $100 investment (Fifine USB mic with an arm + pop filter). As always, Stream Scheme hits the mark with no frills and straight to the point. Thank you!
I love how honest this man is.
Your videos have helped me so much in my twitch career, thanks to you I didn’t make many mistakes in the beginning and I really appreciate your videos and you.
Thank you! Huge help. Thank you for explaining sound settings in such a simple and ez to understand fashion.
Entertaining and informative. I've been struggling a lot with my audio when I've tried recording videos. After this I'm thinking my mic placement and expander settings should hopefully fix a lot of my issues
TY so much, it was really frustrating to invest in a good mic only for it to sound bad. Lowering the gain on windows fixed it instantly, I can't believe it was just that I needed to change.
Thanks for this! Super helpful and easy to follow!
Mic positioning can affect a lot more than people realize. I recently dealt with some issues with sibilance, after following Eljay's mic recommendation of the Samson Q2U. It basically sounded like I had a speech impediment when I pronounced anything with an S or SH sound. I was able to fix this by positioning my mic a little off-axis, pointing it at my neck instead of my mouth. Audio engineers often say problems are best fixed at the source, before moving to things like software solutions. Basically, try making small changes to the position of your mic before going down huge rabbit holes for other solutions. Fixing it might be way easier than you think.
Yep! That’s what I try hammer home here, positioning, placement are king!
Yeah samson q2u has some crazy sibilance. I use a de-esser instead of the off-axis method. Samson Q2u has a pretty narrow pickup pattern
@@comfytoby I thought about a de-esser, but I'm a little hesitant to add any cpu or gpu load to my setup, as it spikes to 100% already sometimes. Maybe when I upgrade from my current budget Lenovo Legion 5 laptop.
Im assuming the q9u is prob similar right.
@@kingslayersloan q9u has a very deep tone (lot of bass) so im assuming it doesn't have the sibilance issue like the Q2u
Yooooo!!! I managed to just happen across your channel only to realise you're also an Aussie in QLD. Dope man! Good to see quality material out of the AUS. Thanks for the video my man.
That is one helpful video, very much appreciate it, sir! Will try all of them!
Respect for transparency and for valuable insights. Hat off!!!
Another great video! The ending was brilliant!
Man thanks you really helped me a lot. I bought a mic yesterday and tried to figure out the whole day how not to sound like I was in the bathroom
Thriwing out the Gain here was definitely a big help. Then I setted everything up similar to you and got pretty close to your second audio. However it not sounding it exactly like this is more to how I move around it. Definitely a big improvement.
Do you have any tips how I can speak clearer into my mic or does it come from experience?
Also I put noice suprresion before noice gate, because it suddenly split my voice into chunks the other way around. Just something you might interested in hearing
Dude this video is actually perfect, thank you!
Glad it helped!
No BS you are a great teacher. Ive been working with audio for over 10 years. Ive started video this year and ive watched a lot of tutorials. Most people dont understand the tools they are using. I can usually tell when they try to explain audio filters. You explained a noise gate better than anyone else ive come across. You have no idea how many times ive gotten the wrong advice. Lol its sad. Even though I have been doing it for a long time. There is always something to learn.
Especially now with all this new technology. If you read this can anybody help me out? I dont know why im having an issue with my audio when i RECORD, using OBS. i havnt really tried streaming yet bc im waiting on the cable company to come and fix the wires. Im only getting like 15 upload and 280 paying for 1gbs.
I have been shooting a podcast for about a year now but the traditional way, leaving us with a lot of work in post. I wanted to free up time to make and edit more content. So i started using OBS as production suite lol. I have a rodecaster pro and stream deck to change scenes. I use 2 Iphone 14 pros. Lol we have had some camera issues. So we are saving up for cameras. The whole goal is to STREAMLINE you know? So while im recording it sounds great but thats bc im getting the audio straight from the source, not the stereo mix going through the computer unless i raise the Usb fader on the rodecaster but even then It sounds fine. I have mix minus on. I have all my channels set to 320 bit rate I record the multitrack on the rodecaster as well as OBS. Thank god I did bc when I listened back the first time I tried. It sounded like I had a STRONG gate or something going on with it, and the overall level was VERY low. I dont have any filters set on OBS. I make sure that everything else is muted and hid in the audio mixer except the rodecaster I can see the levels bouncing fine. So I always have to take the audio from my rodecaster and put it in premiere and synch it up. Just an extra step and I know theres something wrong. SORRY for the long comment but I cant find an answer for any of this anywhere! 😅 I have done 4 episodes in obs and ive tried different settings every time based on ANOTHER youtube tutorial and that dosent work! Lol I have a M2 MacBook. I tried the H.26 encoder but I still have some stability. On other tutorials it says that there should be an option for the Apple blanl blanl HEVC encoder but mine just says HEVC thats it….? Ive been told put it in CBR 18, 20,000 if ur recording. I tried 18,000 I tried the CFR of somethibg and then said 16/18 is a good number. Nope…..Video I good dont get me weong but I notice little stutters and it bothers me. Lol besides that im an audio engineer and cant figure this shit out lol if its just bc of that default setting, ill feel like an idiot. I don’t understand thats reason for being.. we have a scene with a selected audio source. Why do I have to go to inputs. If I already selected my source from my scene. I can understand for monitoring but it affects the output? Sorry again and thank you if you were kind enough to read this and respond!
Thank you for the video. Was struggling with this
Finally, a video that says it makes a $10 mic good that actually does
Hope it helped mate!
Thank goodness I setup my audio right! Got more help here though, much thanks!
i literally have been having audio problems forever and this is the best video that solved my issues
You have no idea how much this comment means.
This... has just reminded me that I recently moved, and have not yet adjusted my mic settings for my new space. I am most definitely a wally 😂.
Great video LJ 👍
I came for the mic advice, subscribed for the sponsor segment, good work 😂
The filters saved my mic audio! No more background static and now the volume is much better!
The noise suppression surprisingly works very well at keeping my keyboard completely unheard. I'm honestly convinced to use that V.S. noise gate because I prefer to reduce background noise (air in background) without having it fade out like it does with the gate.
I started with that exact one haha It did the job for a year then splashed out for the Wave 3.
FANTASTIC Video. Thank you so much!
Glad it was helpful! :)
Great video, I especially loved the ending of it! lmao
i love this guy i make youtube videos and i just unboxed my mic and used it and it sounded trash but after listening to this video it sounds so good
Thank you so much for the help! My audio is amazing now! And you're hilarious!
The end was epic haha thanks for the tips though
My brother has the 39.00 one from them as it comes with the adjustable arm you can clamp to the table amazing value for what you get. uses it for discord calls etc.
I might have missed it, but what brand is it?
Thank you so much
Awesome video! Thanks for the explanation! I see you have a GOXLR, are you setting your main EQ and compression there and supplementing it with OBS or are you using OBS settings to run most of your EQ/compression with GOXLR at default settings? Right now I have mine set up with GOXLR running majority of my EQ and I think it sounds great but not sure for quality stream wise if I should let OBS do the heavy lifting instead of the GOXLR
I just let the GoXLR do everything and send that to OBS, I kinda miss just having an AT2020+ plugged in and no extra hassle though,
Can you make a video on how to help if you keep peaking your mic please!
Really useful video on explaining how to set up in OBS 👍I stream indoor cycle racing so have a number of fans going otherwise I end up with a pool of yuck under the bike 🥵I've tried the OBS noise supression, and RTX voice, but just cannot get it right. My latest video shows using OBS. Any tips please 🙌
*gets called out immideatly for having a hyperx*
😢
Now, having seen a TON of 'how to make your mic sound good' tutorials because of having a hyper x, I have to say this is one of the best. Purely because you explain what and how everything works. As a full picture kind of person, this helps so much more than simply "click here, do this value, pop this filter on."
With all that said, I totally agree with starting out on a budget and slowly upgrading to better things *as* you grow. For me, it's also kind of like a nice reminder of how far I've come.
Great video, as always 👍
The twitch hero we need
I tried to fix my mic sound from scuffing out when i yell and used some plugins that just made it all worse! I hadn't seen the tips about adjusting the windows and the little knob on my yeti. I'll try those, ty!
update. IT DIDN'T HELP AT ALL 😭
loved your final joke, in one word AWSOME
How was I not subscribed to u??? Lm😂😂😂bro funny AF and very helpfulness thanx
Thank you
Great video. I am recording from VHS to my laptop. The audio is coming through with a cracking broken sound. I have gaps and static. Do you have any idea what this could be. It isn't in the original recording
Bought the Tonor Q9 2 days ago and i seem to have so many problems that i cant imagine it being the mic alone. it barely captures my voice and when i boost it with obs or an equalizer it buzzes really loud. Should i return it and buy another mic or is the problem something else?
This video is GANGSTA
RTX Voice works great for removing noise as well if u have the required VGA
Nice video, subscribed, which microphone it is? You didn't share the link
There isn’t a link, it’s $10 from a local grocery store, not something you can get online, I put a end screen to a video about budget gear instead
The smile that faded from my face when he said the hyperx quadcast was the first mistake...
lMAO!!! Cool ElJay needs more parts in videos, maybe his own channel!
I was going to comment that audio is hard, but that's not really correct. Learning the basics is what many people find hard. Once you know them, you never forget them.
I learnt live mixing years ago and still dabble in audio stuff. So I use an old cardioid EV mic on an audio interface for my WFH Zoom calls and people have commented on how good I sound. I can have the blow heater going at my feet and no-one can hear it. :)
I am still working on mine. But I have a small fan I keep at my feet aimed up, XLR does not pick it up (keyboard still a little) but can not run my air conditioner.
I need help with raspy voice issues and quiet voice, when I try to speak with Noise gate it makes me sound say if I'm saying aaaaaaa it'll be like aa aaaa aa aa a aa a a like speaking into a fan if y'know what I mean (trying to get rid of background fan noise)
I've got 3 different mics (that happen to look like that microphone but are gold and black, but are XLR) that I bought for $35 (and I got a stand that looks like that stand and a usb sound card with no fcdfking specs with that that I haven't tested yet and a bunch of cables). The wonderful thing is, when I bought the 2nd mic that looks like, it wasn't quite the same as the 1st one (and the manual of both shows a different microphone, yay). I'm a cheap bastard. So I also got two other $5 mic stands and use a sort of putty to stabilize them. Then I've got those behringer ECM 800s (those pencil looking things) and some $15 (for a pair) dynamic mics and some other mics. As well as a dual XLR/AUX $45 24bit 192khz audio interface (South African). Super hardcore gear.
Also, connect your things (PC, speakers and such) to the same (decent) plugs (otherwise you could get ground loop issues, 50/60hz buzz, etc), perhaps consider ground loop isolators, surge protectors, etc. Also, the settings in windows (if you use windows) are often at 16bit 44.1khz by default. I would recommend a 32bit (or better) DAC/ADC and higher frequency (some of those DAC/ADCs are like $10-15, though there are caveats, depending), as an analogy it's much like the resolution and framerate in a game/video 16bit only represents 65536 possible values, 32bit 4 billion...so it might require some serious processing, but it's good for playback/monitoring. Personally I kinda like the $15 32bit 384khz DAC I got for playback and such (it actually gets hot so I dunno if it's got a toaster chipset in it, but an additional usb connector (since it's usb-c and my sort of 15 year old pc and 1.1ghz laptop don't have usb-c ports) helps to function as a heatsink). But there are better ones. I also currently use two connected ground loop isolators, a surge protector, 2 surge protected multiplugs to help regulate voltage and such, and some people were complaining my sound is too loud, ground loop isolators lower the volume quite a bit).
With the behringers, I noticed that the case it's shipped in is actually a really good sound shield in case you want to make it less omnidirectional.
I also have a 29 channel (potentially, since I haven't set up my new 3ft tall $50 10 channel speakers which I will be turning sideways yet that have wireless charging and stuff?) speaker setup (some of the speakers are like 30 years old), $15 KZ crystal special edition IEMs, Alesis SRP 100s (that were $25), Prodipe BR3000s that were around $30-35, and Powerworks HPW3000s (South African upgrades of the Prodipes, and they look basically identical other than colour, but aren't) that were $30. So yeah, huge expenses.
And have a good day. (There are a lot of other things I could say, but I'm not really in the mood to rant right now, though the most significant inexpensive/functional upgrade I'd get is a South African amp/mixer unit that's around $150, and that there are numerous inexpensive simple means to mod/improve gear). Apparently also, I figure a Razer Huntsman v3 might kick the shit out of Korg/Yamaha/Roland things. Since it's positional sensing (0th derivative vs typical 2nd derivative, meaning you can derive acceleration and velocity, etc from it) as well as having seemingly 32bit full analog precision, 100+ keys and full polyphony, and generally probably more utilitarian (though software support might be an issue unless you code custom things(. But I've not had the opportunity to test that yet. Seems like it'd be nice for a compact setup though. I'm not one of those Eurocrack sort of guys.
I always disable the default audio sources in settings, so that it only picks up the source i add
Tried following some of these tips, and moved the problem into the other room, but now my stream can't hear me from the other room. Not sure how to proceed.
Hey, what do you personally think is better, a gen1 xlr interface and a cloudlifter inline preamp or a gen2 xlr interface with an interal preamp and no cloudlifter?
Entirely depends on the mic, both are a waste of money when just starting out and something like a Samson Q2u will do the job
@@StreamScheme well i am planning to get a shure sm7b, for streaming and for other jobs. But i am deciding whether to go gen1 or gen2 interface.
I really wouldn’t bother with the Shure Sm7b, unless you’re doing high end professional music production, and you’re clients are going to pay it off in a few sessions.
@@StreamScheme well the mic isnt really the problem, i can afford the mic i am just wondering in the audio quality. In using the two choices of preamp.
I am streaming through streamlabs on my pc playing the new Cod, and my viewers can’t seem to hear game chat. Is there a fix for this if so please let me know I’ve been researching it but can’t seem to find anything to help. TIA!
I want to apply this filters to my microphone so that I sound like this everywhere like in video games and such to other people. Can anyone tell me the best and easiest way to do that? I have voicemod and use it for voice reduction but it doesn't work great and cuts off my voice quite often.
But if big streamers have expensive gear and then I get the same expensive gear will I not grow like them? I must just need more expensive gear to really grow.
I honestly dont hear much if any difference for the noise suppression for example
And how do I set up two mics inside the same room on two different pcs without my partners mic recording my voice and vise versa?
I just want discord default noise suppression in obs. Filters out everything in the background and doesn't seem to affect voice quality like obs does
11:44 "Just remove the issue from your room" *proceeds to turn off pc*
I've followed for a while and I've even watched this video before as it's helped with mic setup. However why am I only now realising he's Australian!
Using 3 mics for 3 people on our podcast and we are echoing so bad. We started of using snowballs and wasn’t bad, then went to lapel mics and it got worse. Going back to snowballs and am going to try some of these settings. Hoping it works. I’ll let you know. Thanks for great pointers on audio.
Samson q2u dynamic mics are your better option, snowballs are condenser mics so they’re super sensitive, lapels are Omnidirectional so they pick up everywhere.
Get a cardio dynamic mic like the Samson q2u and set it up properly.
@@StreamScheme can’t afford 3 of them rn but will get better ones in the future. Thank you!!
Do you record voice overs in obs or a different softwere
Straight into Premiere pro for most gaming videos, for these videos it’s OBS but I can use Premiere mid edit if I need
@@StreamScheme im confused, i use premiere pro but i didnt know you could do a voice over there, but thank you for the response
Well there you have it
What if you can't stream in OBS? That's my issue. I only have a weak laptop and the video quality isn't very good it's very laggy and audio is super choppy. I usually have to stream directly from console. I have a $30 usb mic I use that seems to work ok
came for the content, stayed for the blurred cutout of Danny DeVito in the background.
That’s not Danny it’s my dad watching
Cannot find the microphone mentioned in this topic.
Nice
For some reason, OBS will sometimes not pick up my mic despite the setting being set to said mic, and I end up needing to switch from, and then back to, the mic. No idea why...
12:13 😂 talks about being hot but is wearing a hoodie and beanie😂😂
how can i remove the noise if the noise is my family
"I am peaking HARD right now"
Dollar for every time...
OK, well, I got a cheap mic, looks very much like the one you were showing lol. Budgets, eh? So I'm gonna see how it does now I've set it up better
I think another reason people recommend people get the expensive gear is because they need to justify it to themselves as well. They bought it and they don't want to feel stupid for it, so they tell others it was totally worth it.
100% but last time I said that I got angry tweets lol
great way to call out assholes that want to get Paid. Well done bro frfr
I'm surprised there was no mention of NVIDIA Broadcast. It is shockingly helpful in removing background noise alongside OBS noise suppression. Also a plus that it has background removal for your camera too. Only works with RTX 2060 or higher though :/
It has lots of issues, not to mention the final part of your message, and remember we don’t WANT to use noise suppression and removal. We want to learn to capture clean audio.
@@StreamScheme Ah gotcha, that's fair. I wasn't aware that having both noise suppression and noise removal wouldn't be ideal. I can only speak for my own experience, but using Broadcast has been pretty great so far, although I do have a beefy PC. I forgot that it is beta software, so yeah probably not a great idea to recommend it. Thanks for the pointers!
I tried it and it really does not work well. Cuts off lot of voice and doesn't remove white noise at all. For me at least
@@lawrence9713 Yeah, really does seem like a gamble to work with.
what was the $10 mic you bought for the video?
No name grocery store mic :)
The goXLR doesn't need the cloudlifter as it provides enough clean gain on its own... Any reason why you use it?
People always say this and on paper sure, but ask any Streamer or Creator who’s used one and actually cares about their audio, and they’ll tell you how much better it sounds with a cloudlifter.
@@StreamScheme appreciate the response and will definitely consider nabbing one in the future.
Ehi there Elj.
Amazing video, as always.
I read your top comment, but I still don't understand.
Do you think It is wise to buy a higher end microphone when you are trying to reach better audio quality or not?
Is It always a scam?
I mean, I would do damage to streamers by saying "buy an expensive mic if you want to improve your already great base set up"?
I think often big expensive microphones aren’t needed, you can get by with what your budget requires, and as mentioned at the end of the video I have another video with specific recommendations on budget gear :) that covers what I recommend and why.
@@StreamScheme
I see, thank you for the information!
well ye mic comparison, you expect raw data not eq'd mic, i was actually surprised Shure can pick up the details and the first one have no bass since it supposed to pick up fq more as this supposed to be condenser vs dynamic
if you not have a interface yet, because you already told you have spend hefty price for those mics why not sell all those get yourself a audio interface and a penici/shodgun mic instead? less than the sure and will sound better ;)
Bonus Pro tip. Get a dynamic mic instead of a condenser. The mic will be closer your face but well worth it for background removal.
Absolutely agree, I cover dynamic mics A LOT in other videos, but this is the idea of challenging myself to get a decent sound with the cheapest most common mic.
At the end i was waiting for "And then i realized i actually was using the expensive mic"
So my wife and I stream together, often side by side, we are looking to upgrade our audio and get away from wearing a headset. Are there any solutions that would help? Looking to find a mic that will pick both of us up without wearing a headset!
Dynamic mics are your best bet, Samson Q2u is a budget dynamic mic linked in the video I reference at the end of this one.
Get it nice and close to you, leveled properly, best bet.
DAWG FROM WHICH SHOP DID YOU SCAB THIS FROM?? woolies? aldi?
I think it was Kmart or Woolies hahaha
I use this exact mic lol
11:40 unfortunately, our walls are thin and removing my brother from his own home isn't gonna fly with him XD
i gott that miccc
i have that mic, it cost 40 aud from kmart im so confused
Buying a MIC for their own GAIN! I get it! I figured out the joke that you obviously and intentionally put in the video! 😂😂😂
What’s the mic?
"If that doesn't work, just remove the source of the noise." (looks at child) hmmm...🤔. Jokes aside, this video was super helpful. I was struggling with this, so you've helped me quite a bit. Thanks so much. Have a nice day! :D
Why change the mic volume in windows settings when you change it with the slider in obs?
As I explain in the video, they aren’t changing the same thing, they are different levels. Sometimes you need to level it earlier to get it sounding right.
@@StreamScheme That makes sense, thanks!
for streaming it makes no difference, but who does dubbing, sings or plays instruments makes a difference
I really like the microphone what’s the name of it ?
Doesn’t have one it’s literally just in a grocery store. You should grab The Samson Q2u if you want a good mic
kmart gaming microphone set. and its actually $40
Audio clip one sounds like you're further away, clip 2 sounds like you're at a good range
Yer, it’s a scorcha mate!
