Kakapo: Crazy Moss Chickens

- Dunedin Wildlife Hospital helps care for native New Zealand wildlife that are sick or injured. We helped care for sick kakapo chicks during the 2019 breeding season as well as the aspergillosis outbreak.
These critically endangered parrots are very playful and a joy to care for!
Head to kakapo Recovery webpage (www.doc.govt.nz/kakapo-recovery) for more info on these beautiful parrots. - Домашні улюбленці та дикі тварини
My memory of these birds are just one of them mating on a british guy's head
“Mate, you are being shagged by a rare parrot”
@@MagpieDynamics truly an exotic sight
Yup 😂
"Look. He's so happy... He's really going for it!"
I wrote a paper in middle school about these guys. The shitty kind with citations...
Down to how researchers were trying to adjust diet to improve the parrot's yearly reproduction.
I'm old enough to remember when it was thought that there was only one kakapo left. The discovery of that tiny colony on Stewart island gave me such a relief . From the low of only 20 birds to the current population of 250 has been a miracle. Every single one of these birds is priceless and it's testament to the ecologists and biologists of New Zealand for rescuing the species from the brink of extinction.
Me too.
I’m quite young still, but when I heard about kakapos the first thing I wanted to do was protect them. They are my favorite bird. They are perfect chubby little moss chickens
As far as I know the number went to around 50?
@@Random-sm5gi
That was after the Stewart Island population was rediscovered. Before then only five individuals were known, all males.
Where else were they
That species got international fame...
when their ambassador Sirocco tried to mate with a human. He was so happy doing it too
siROCCO, like the legend himself ?
@@sephikong8323
Si, Rocco!
"Look he's so happy... he's really going for it!" 😆
Sirocco: You got a purrty head boi.
Human: "I am sorry WHAT?"
*Careless whisper intensifies.*
Kakapo: "Looking double wide surprise"
Guy: what?
Heaven's animal design team:
"Okay, hear me out... A bird. But just in body.
For its brain & spirit; A cat that is perpetually high on nip."
Nah you won't get that in any cat
@@easternwind4435 You must be new to the cat side of the internet; there's plenty of cats that react to nip like that.😂
God: "Approved!"
I love that anime
@@smashbrolink This is typical playful and curious parrot behaviour tho.
I know nothing about the kakapo (yet), but you described these birds well!
Love how they roll over like a parrot and walk like an owl
LMAO THE WAY THEY JUST KEEP FALLING OVER AND ROLLING EVEN WHEN THEYRE NOT HARASSING THE TOWEL
ひっくり返ってジタバタしてるのも、飛べないくせにいっちょ前に羽バサバサしてるのも全部愛おしいカカポさん
i’ve been so intrigued by kakapo for quite some time now. this video sort of just clarified how they’re parrots
First of all: Same!!!
Second of all: Everyone in this comment section are acting like it’s an animal they always known but don’t know the name of it :,)
BUT FINALLY SOMEONE THAT ACTUALLY KNOW THE NAME OF IT
@@genshinkleetheterroristd4576 I always called it a Cockapoo just to be childish... then I found out that's a dog breed. Unfortunate pupper.
That was my question seeing their feet.
They're moss chickens :)
Me: I'm going to be responsible and go to bed early tonight!
Me at 1 am: crazy moss chickens from New Zealand
its 1:02 4 me lol
Why is it that there is only 30 minutes between the hours of 1 am and 5 am ?
@@ebeb516 I know, It's crazy isn't it?
Sounds all too familiar to me😅
It's 2:45 a.m. right now for me.
it's no wonder they're endangered- they can't go 5 steps without tripping on themselves XD!!!
They're corgi puppies of the bird world
They had no natural predators before people came along and brought all sorts of weird shit to NZ. Can you even imagine it? Two huge islands and not one native land-based mammalian!
@@Nemo66577 Nope, no snakes, but there are lizards, frogs, bats and the 'living fossil', the tuatara! Looks like a lizard, but it comes from a completely different lineage that is only found in NZ!
@@Safiyahalishah Cats (for example) are a scourge for those birds. If unchecked, cats will exterminate them. They are critically endangered & there are only like 160 of them.
It’s like god woke up and decided to make the goofiest bird possible ❤
it ties on that spot with Keas😁
the poor goofballs are endangered
Blue-footed boobies.
Imagine having one of these as a pet.
That would be the Potoo bird.
OMG these babies are hilarious-just Adorable! The lucky people that get to care for them!
I wouldn't say lucky. These birbs will try to mate with anything that moves.
@@cleanserofnoobs4162 There are much worse things to deal with, their cuteness is wel worth it
Just don’t put them near your neck...
@@cleanserofnoobs4162 Just cause you saw one video about them doesn't make you an expert on the birds...
@@epicbear4679 Well you're wrong. I've watched more than one video. I watched this one, and also the one with the guy who was getting shagged in the neck. So checkmate!
these are the derpiest, most majestic potatoes I have ever seen

These are the cutest, derpiest things ever
Bird big, brain small, silliness infinite.
this is the most reasonable and restrained rendition of yakety sax i’ve ever heard
These guys are just absolute favorite. I just hope they're being protected and not exploited.
Places like New Zealand and Australia are very good at keeping endangered animals away from people who do that but if they are in SE Asia (like Cambodia, Vietnam, parts of China, etc) then you can just forget about it. (Unless an American or British have / run a wildlife rescue/rehabilitation center) They will be exploited, abused (physically & psychologically & in some horrific cases even sexually) and if it's a monkey they tend to horrifically abuse them in ways that can't be defined, it's unbelievably horrifying.
It's completely opposite in NZ and Australia, they are Usually so protective that it can cross over the line to be extreme / overboard at times.
@@ladyweasellou3367 everywhere should be extreme when it comes to protecting animals in my opinion. If you did any of that to a person, you would most likely go to jail in most places. And I feel like it should be the same way for animals. I just have no idea why anyone would sexually abuse an animal.
@@ladyweasellou3367 Australia is actively trying to eliminate the dingo. They hate their native wildlife
@@ladyweasellou3367 I've loved animals since the first moment I saw one so unfortunately I know all about it and even then some. Thinking about these things just weighs me down emotionally.
@@J.A.huscher I agree. To be bluntly honest I wish all animal abuse, poaching, forced breeding, etc etc should have stiff and serious legal repercussions. 9 times out of 10 anyone that is capable of abusing an animal is capable of almost anything. I feel this should be a U.N global issue.
I'm going to sleep early today

They are so playful and adorable!! GOD protect these little ones, and all of the beautiful creatures HE gave us.

It's fun to see them acting like the rest of the parrot family with their curiosity and silliness.
Fantastic. It is so crazy that New Zealand birds, i e kiwi and Kakapo, are so much more like puppies than birds. Greetings from Germany. You are doing such a great job with these animals.❤️

They had no natural predators....and then humans brought cats and cats are very good at killing
@@2020Dumpsterfire Rats and stoats too, who are also very good at swimming across islands and also eat eggs

@@2020Dumpsterfire Yep. The mammals introduced to New Zealand devastated a habitat once dominated by anything but. It's a shame.
Females can only reproduce when there are plentiful Rimu berries. Now with global warming the fungus aspergillosis is prolific and is deadly to these birds. 2020 was great for rimu berries, so lots of chicks were born bumping the numbers to just above 200!
