I have had a set of these since they first came out, and have hardly used them, because I already had a mixed set of watercolour pencils. However, when I was out painting one day, an elderly lady came by. She told me that her husband used to do a lot of art, but because of the arthritis in his hands, it's almost impossible to hold a standard pencil. I thought about the Woodys, and suggested that they might help. She lived close to me and I took them that afternoon. She returned them next day, saying that they were exactly what he needed, and he was so happy that she was going out to buy a set for him right away. . I've kept the Woodys, and do occasionally play with them, and have a feeling that one day, I may be glad to have them, as my hands are not as good as they used to be. But equally, maybe a special pencil adapter will also do the job. As someone else has said, Lindsay (the Frugal Crafter) reviewed these and showed that only half the barrel has colour, which I'm not happy about, ethically, but it may have been a production issue, or maybe has been corrected. Just now, I don't know, but you've said a lot of adult colouring folk use them, and this issue hasn't come up yet, so maybe it _has_ been corrected. Equally, I'm not sure how we'd hold the stub of one of these fat crayons easily, so it could be for that reason. As I said in the comments to the Crayola review, using one drop of vegetable glycerine in the barrel of a water brush, or 2 drops t 100ml water for watercolour brushes will make magic of activating water-soluble products, and I'd love to see how this works on the more stubborn of your collection. 🙂
I'm hesitant on the glycerin part, especially in my coloring books. I'd need to test and see what that does to the paper. I know it isn't much in the waterbrush, but still. I'd also be curious about the residue on the brush and if that would impact when it goes to reactivate other items later -- yes you can clean it with Pink Soap but something I need to try out before putting it on my books :). However, I've used it on my 100% cotton watercolour paper, the paper in my W&N sketchbook (not cotton!), in an art creation sketchbook (a thin, non-watercolour paper), with no problems - but be sure to buy _vegetable_ glycerine. Sorry - should have said that before. But I haven't seen any other type when doing my own research before using it. There is so little glycerine in the water pot or water brush.... Because I'm always curious, I've just done a test. My water-brush holds 10mls. A 5ml syringe, dripped slowly, holds 75 drops. So that's 150 drops water to 1 drop glycerine in your brush. It's easier to make up a smallish bottle of the solution, 2ml to every 100ml), saving the bother of measuring each time. Note: _Never_ use more glycerine - it works perfectly at this dosage, and adding lots more will result in a shiny finish to your work, or the paint just not drying. For your brushes? You don't need a special cleaner. Thanks for sharing your findings! I have actually had these for several years. I purchased them when they were marketed for mixed media purposes. They are extremely blendable/smudgable when used over Gesso or matte/gloss mediums. (Kinda like Gelatos or gel crayons) I did not think to use them as a straight coloring medium. My wheels are definitely spinning..... Hey! I'll bet that they'll behave similarly over watercolor ground as they do over Gesso! Hmmmm I know that a lot of colorists use watercolor ground or matte/gloss mediums on pages before starting to color on it. It's definitely worth a try. I never thought
Great video! I was super excited to see these included, even though they technically seem to be more like pencils, we do use them the same. These were my favorite when comparing, followed by my prima “oil pastels”. (Also used the same). Recently I added the Maribu Art Crayons to my collection...and they are AWESOME too. Yeah I do have some Maribu, but those will go in my gel crayon comparison/collection. I put these here because part of the "3" in the name is wax crayon, but I'll probably still have them in the watercolor pencil battle as well.

The color vibrancy did look different on different paper but that could also be because there was more pigment laid down on the watercolor paper than in the coloring book. I think these work very similar to all of the water soluble crayons, gel sticks, etc, with the exception of the really good brands, such as Caran d'Ache, of course! I have the full set of colors of the KingArt gel sticks and they are very similar to how these work. I never color with them, I always activate the gel stick on a palette or pick up color directly from the tip of the gel stick, and then apply it to my coloring page. That's the only way to avoid those harsh lines and get a good, even color blend. And I have found that unless you buy the expensive brands, this is how they work, and the cheap to mid priced ones seem to work about the same. I do enjoy my KingArt gel sticks, which were about $55 for the full set of all the colors, but they're definitely not on the same level as the Neocolor II, that's for sure!
Yeah cheaper brands don't blend as well, but I wouldn't compare these to gel crayons outside of the application process (the palette). That said, cheaper products will always have less pigment, more fillers, and those fillers can determine what paper they do/don't activate on, sadly. But, off the palette, these are absolutely lovely.
@@ColorfullyOptimistic Yea, some things you can get away with buying the cheaper brand. I might buy the cheaper store brand of fruit loops lol but I don't like skimping when it comes to art supplies! I just meant that they're similar in how they behave if you color with them because they leave lines behind when you activate them with water. So like gel sticks, they work best if you lift color from the tip or from a palette. But you're absolutely right that they're different from gel sticks. I want these (cos I want everything, I have FSS bad 😂), but I just can’t bring myself to spend NZD $140 for 18 kiddy crayons when I already have a large set of Neo2s tho 😂 They charge $7.80 each for these… a Copic Ciao is $7.95, Polychromo $3.50 which is already spendy… but these are just CRAZY prices! 🎉 Might spring for the black and pink one tho, just because! And also “big” cute supplies look cool as deco…. But $15 for 2 crayons? Eep!
Hi Kori! Have you seen the review that Lindsay the Frugal Crafter did for these? It was back on June 27, 2022. She did an interesting comparison where she whittled away at the back end of these to see where the pigment starts - quite surprising, particularly when you compare how much product you get for the per-pencil cost. Love your channel!
These are actually nowhere near as bad as I would have expected them to me just because they're not top of the line I know that sounds Cindy please forgive me for that. But we see so many budget brands that in this category don't work as well. However as far as watercolor brush vs. Waterbrush I think that we use whatever works best with that product or type of product and if we don't we're not giving the products a fair chance to shine. Thank you so much for doing all of this that you've been doing it is greatly appreciated. Oh and by the way the fact that they don't reactivate on paper reminds me of Derwent inktense
I guess the water brush doesn't "suck in" as much pigment as the princeton one when activating the crayons. The nylon helps a lot too because of its hardness, but also because it doesn't hold so much water maybe? 🤔
I have a testing video coming out using different watercolor brushes and comparing them to the waterbrush -- should come out Monday. It is a matter of a) softeness, b) water sorta, and c) the vibrancy of the pigment in the product to begin with

These work great on Phomemo printer sticker paper. I print pics for my journal and color them with these and blend with my fingers.
