  • It's no secret that golfers are looking for more consistency. Can ONE Length irons help?
    Cobra have several iterations of ONE Length irons, as used by LIV Golfer Bryson DeChambeau. To find out if these Cobra irons were useful, equipment editor Alex Lodge has had them in the bag for 6 months.
    Alex talks through his findings at Gatwick Golf Studio.

    Great video and well done for giving the one-length a really good chance. I would shift back to normal-length clubs. I have tried the one-length for a month, where I played 18 holes every day - so a lot of rounds but a long time. I got okay results, not an improvement (I was a 10 handicapper at the time (used to be a 5 handicapper) and used to play blades (Titleist 660)). I shifted back to normal length - and it was such a relief. A relief that I felt that I was able to play many different shots with normal lengths. It felt more natural. I shifted to a combo set - more help in the long irons and blades in the short irons. This is not necessarily easy to get or find or even get fitted for. I wish they - fitters, and manufacturers - would do more of an effort to make these combo iron available. It has got a lot better. Now with my fitted combo normal length irons and am making a lot of improvements - handicap on the way down at the moment i am at 7. I would suggest to shift to a combo set - YES GET FITTED :-)

    Get Fitted - I play 1 Length and absolutely love them. Now, my swing speeds are nowhere near yours but it has made my game more consistent. Currently gaming the LTDx 5-GW and don't have any problems with distances. Yes, more distance from lofted irons than lower loft but that is why I also have a driving iron, hyrid and woods in the bag depending on course layout to compensate. If you have an inconsistent swing 1 length is definitely the way to go. The rest simply comes down to adapting your game to the advantage of the clubs.

    Had a similar transition with my one length hybrid. Don't have one length irons, but I got the hybrid and was struggling with topping it for the first few practice sessions and rounds, but it has become my favorite club in the bag. I can hit any shot I want with it, and it goes far. Absolutely recommend.

    Given the bunching up of distances in the 'long' irons and your concerns over spin numbers - just get them custom fitted but choose the option to increase the lofts by 2 degrees across the whole set - hey presto - higher spin - reduce the distances to more sensible numbers - more chance for the long irons to spread out a little (especially with your high swing speed) and you still get the benefits of one length consistency.

    I think you see a combination of two different issues here. First, as you note, is the one-length issue and the other is the strong lofts and tech put in Game improvement irons (strong lofts, low CGs, etc). When I tried them after getting back into golf, I found the wedges went way too high and the low-numbered irons (they aren't longer) were lower and tightly gapped. I tried to tweak them a bit, but ended up switching the wedges out for shorter clubs and then found myself replacing low-lofted ones with hybrids. I did do some research on how to make it work and modified an old set of hybrids in terms of head weight to make them one-length, but they were still longer than the irons. In short, though I loved the idea in concept, in order to keep my ball-flight and gapping where I wanted, I only ended up playing 6-9 in the one-length irons; at that point, it didn't seem worth the limitations in terms of company or models to choose from.

    Interesting observations. I teach the Setup 4 Impact one plane swing for Kirk Junge. We get a lot of questions about the one length clubs because Bryson (and some say Moe Norman) in addition to the one plane swing also used one length clubs...therefore many think they go together. We do not recommend for them or against them, but tell people if they do go the one plane route to get fitted for them. As an instructor, I wanted to see what one length was all about so that I could give an educated answer to those who asked. I bought a set of one length irons, 4 through PW. As you noted, the 8,9,w were comfortable but went extremely high in addition to a bit more distance. I found I could choke up just a bit on those and control the height when needed. The problem was with the 4,5,6...they all went nearly the same distance and were very low and a little shorter in distance, so they didn't stop as well on the green. I found I could tweak my setup and ball position to get them higher, but that kind of defeats the purpose on one length, doesn't it? Al least one company is now making a dual length set (Pinhawk Vertex) with the 3,4,5 longer than the 6-p. I haven't tried those but it sounds like an answer to those of us who don't care for hybrids. I didn't stick with the one length irons but I'm open to possibly trying a set of dual length at some point.
    Thanks for this video, it was well presented, and it confirmed my own findings.

    The 17 yard gap between PW and 9 iron could be the key to everything.
    - increase the loft of the 5-9 iron by one degree
    - This would bring the gap between the 9 and PW closer to 13 yards
    - increase the spin on the 7 iron by about 400 RPM
    - This should bring the gap between the 4 and 5 iron to 12 yards. With the option of reducing the 4i loft to 20 degrees to increase the gap to 16ish yards
    The gapping in each club would between 11 to 14 yards per club.
    A few adjustments these could be the perfect set of irons for you!

  • @AL-og4sp
    @AL-og4sp Рік тому +3

    Try Dual length! Long irons & short irons at two different lengths can greatly reduce the two issues many golfers have with the one length concept. e.g. the long iron gapping and overall distance will be centered around a 4 or 5 iron length club rather than a 7 iron length club. The short irons & wedges can be centered around your PW/9 iron club length so that they don't feel absurdly long or fly too high.
    The added benefit of the short irons and wedges having the same length is the you can use the whole group of short irons as for a variety of pitching distances, all by using the same abbreviated swing as your wedges. I have a chart will a well practiced solution for any increment under 150 yards. Full swing, 3/4, 2/3 and a 1/2 swings yields different distances right around 3-4 yards apart.

    I'm using the the RAD SPEED OL since 18 months ago and love their consistency. Have the same issues with 4 and 5 where they might as well carry the same distance as my 6 iron but just harder to hit. I've improved my golf a good bit since then and my swing speed is around 80 with OL They are not fitted though and during a lesson I had today my trainer said I should get a stiffer shaft and change the lie with my swing, but thinking of buying these instead and get a clean fitting for them as well.

    I have been using the Cobra one length forged tec iron for more than a month now.....been really struggle and inconsistent with 5/6 iron (I didn't buy 4 iron)....which was ironic because these two irons was exactly the reason why I switch to one length, although the shot distribution and consistency of P/9/8/7 has been better than before. After some struggles of fat shot with 5/6, I think I finally found the reason. The Cobra use variable lie angle even in their one length iron. The 5 iron has 64 degree lie angle while the PW has 61.5 degree lie angle..... I have a tendency to stay closer to the ball when I set up with 5/6 iron to compensate the lie angle....and this is probably the reason why I keep hitting slightly fat shot with 5/6 iron. Sometimes with 7 iron but not so bad, but never with 8/9/P.
    I put on an alignment stick and fixed my distance to the ball and ignore the lie angle, and I was now much better consistency in hitting the 5/6 iron and much less fat shot like I was before.

      The most important reason I use it is(Side bend of my spine)
      If u use hand to swing,one length cant create enough speed.

    I played OL irons for a few years with great results. I switched back to regular irons for several reasons, at least that's what I told myself. The real reason, being perfectly honest, is as you guys across the pond might say, I'm a bit of a magpie when it comes to clubs--just wanting something new and shiny. Anyway, I just picked up another used set of OL irons. I really missed the 'short' irons, especially the wedges. They are easier on my back, way less tendency to blade full wedge shots, and the extra speed with the longer shaft helps to cut though the thickest rough. I was never all that thrilled with the 5, or 4 iron because they would sometimes come up short, even on shots that seemed pretty well struck. I'll probably sub in regular 6,5,4, or possibly hybrids. I'll also adjust the lofts a bit because, I find that 4 degrees between clubs works well for me. I know I probably can't get to 4 degrees with modern GI clubs, but I can get pretty close.

  • @aevans1979
    @aevans1979 Рік тому

    There are many solutions you can go with but all will have trade offs due to the lack of club head options in OL.
    Try the utility heads. They are larger and can increase launch angle. Adjust lofts to improve gapping. Change shaft in lower lofted irons to increase launch angle (lighter weight will likely increase swing speed too so gapping will improve.)
    Add tip weight to lower lofted irons to increase distance. If you disassemble a Cobra OL Speedzone 4 you’ll find it has a tip weight already. Not sure about the newer forged tecs but if so replace with a heavier one.

  • @CurtisFredericks
    @CurtisFredericks Рік тому

    Of course you can adjust loft which will in turn change spin rate and distance. You can even put new shafts in it that are optimal for spin rates you're looking for. Longer irons can be strengthened in loft but honestly 12yards avg. between irons isn't bad, 15 yards would be better. Just get them adjusted to what you're looking for per club. There are tons of fitters that can do this for you.

  • @Joker-yh2xg

    Their forged. Bend them to whatever lofts you want to increase spin. Like you said though get a fitting. TXG does a phenomenal video on fitting Matty for one length. Hits them, bends them on the spot one by one, ends up with perfect gapping/spin.

    Also do you need a ball fitting? That could give you a change in flight and spin numbers?
    I went OL last year and like you gained consistancy hugely, as well as confidence. Horses for courses.

    You might try the Wishon EQ1-NX from Diamond Golf there in England. Or the Edel one length irons.
    As to the spin vs club number, that's everywhere today given the lofts. You have to recalibrate your expectation to the loft instead of the number.
    I used one length a few years ago for a season and loved them, but I'm too slow to benefit much these days. I have too many hybrids, so not enough irons to have much of a length spread within the set anyway. If that makes sense....
    I found that the drawbacks are easier to see than are the benefits. So most people focus on the drawbacks. The benefits are less tangible but arguably more impactful than the drawbacks. As your scoring shows.

    I would like to get my forged tec ones fitted but doesn’t that lock in based upon your current skill set and ability to be consistent. No matter what club you use, you should be able to get the same shot (carry,apex,club/face path, spin, side spin) if you can do that 5-10 time in a row then its worth getting fitted because your swing is dialed in. If you are all over the place it is your swing not the equipment. You should not be fitted if you are inconsistent because if you ever plan on getting better swing mechanics, you will be fighting the equipment. Does anyone agree or disagree? I was a fresh hacker a year and half ago, I played 40 over or worse for a year, then switch to one lengths and stiffer shafts and I’m a 15, I just struggle with short game and putting and I think I could get under 10 in the next year.

    I would have a hard time with your lofts/spin issues, definitely needs fixed. Maybe those heads just aren't for you.

      How comes you changed from the Previous OL? I'm going to for sure get a fitting in the new year and document the process for my next video.

    I'm a 14hcp and have these exact irons... I think for you as a exceptionally good golfer, maybe you're not getting all the benefits because you don't need the help? For me, I am more consistent, more accurate, and although I agree with you about the distances, I (just about) manage a 15 yard gap between clubs from 4 iron down to pitching wedge, and I have a 86mph swing with my one length irons. For me, now I could never go back to variable length!

    • @GolfmagicPlus

      Perhaps! I am currently still using them though as they are benefitting me greatly and I have no reason to change. Happy to hear they've worked out well for you

    I game the Pinhawk SL which are traditional lofted and with even increments with 5 degrees from 4 to 7 and from there 4 degrees from 8 to lob wedge. This is also with the Wishon single length. I did a shootout between those 2. The new Cobra set will be different and less strong lofted. I would say stay on it and think about change the brand. Loved that you kept on it. I'm calles locally mr One length so title claimed already. 🤣😉 I also competed in the Dutch championship one length. Anyway see my niche channel. Soon a one length special live stream. Cool update and thx. 🤘🏻😎🤘🏻

    They used to offer a tour forged one, but the majority of recreational golfers who use or will try one-length are high handicappers. So it doesn't make profit sense to offer anything outside of the game improvement category.

    You can fix your issues with shaft. I have played 1lngth for 25yrs. It will do what you want. You just need to get your setup correct.

    Carry 186 yds with 5000 spin at 115 feet and a 49* decent angle..? That ball should stop on a dime. With those numbers I could probably stop a Pinnacle withing 3 feet of the ball mark on US Open greens. Here's your next video, you don't need a custom fitting. You already have access to a trackman system. Get some RCT Pro V-1's and warm up. 10 shots with every club starting with your most lofted wedge and working through the set. Throw out the outliers (bad shots) and get a nice average with each club. If there's a big issue with this gapping session take that club in and have it checked against the club below it and the club above it. If it's off just have them tweek it where you need it and redo the gapping session. Your video can be fast forwarded through the shots and you can post the numbers. Ive found huge issues with Arrccos since it averages in all your shots. You shank a few and suddenly the numbers are way off for that club.

    something isnt right with your clubs yardages! I have one length and i have great yardages and the shorter clubs have a higher flight so they hold the greens superbly!

  • @jayv8162
    @jayv8162 Рік тому

    One length are the way to go. I'm gonna disagree with you on one thing you said. The fact that every club is 10-13 yards apart is an advantage. That adds to the consistency. The guys I play with bag about having a fast swing speed... but I can take them everytime on the Lynx. Just my 2 cents. Your playing a traditional game and not playing the club.

    the switch was not that difficult for me. I love the 7 thru Gap. A lot of confidence when standing over the ball. The 6 and 5 do fly at a lower trajectory. I swapped them for the variable length irons and they work great and flow into variable length fairway woods

    I've had the F7s for 6 years and have improved my game. It's easy to have over half the bag with 1 swing and the rest are woods or wedges which are diffetent anyone. I'm due to be fitted for a new set next month to hopefully see even more improvement
