    An interesting review. I'm 72 years old and my swing speed is 80-82 mph. About 2 years ago, I set out to find the best ball for my game. I listened to a bunch of podcasts and read a lot of articles on the "best ball for slow swing speeds." I wound up testing the Callaway Supersoft, Srixon Softfeel, Titleist ProV1, Titleist AVX, Noodle Long and Soft, Precept Laddie Extreme, Cut Grey, Kirkland Signature and a few others. In the end, I liked the feel of the softer balls but found almost no difference in performance except that I have the impression that the Kirkland doesn't go as far as the others and the Titleist AVX might go a bit further (or it might be my imagination). Now, I use the AVX if the fairway is wide and there's no water. Otherwise, I use the cheapest ball I can buy, which is the Precept or the Noodle. I really believe that unless you're good enough to consistently hit the ball where you want to hit it, it just doesn't make any difference.

      So I agree with some of this. I would actually make the argument that if you are not very good and you miss hit the golf ball a lot, you want something with softer compression to offer more forgiveness. If you are hitting a firmer golf ball like the AVX or the pro v1, Miss hits are going to punish you a lot more than soft golf balls are.

      I understand that thought process. And I'm sure it's true to some degree. But you do need to be careful. It's kind of like I mentioned in the video.
      The amount of people who have been a die-hard golf ball fan and have switched once I do a fitting for them would baffle you. A lot of people think that a golf ball fitting would be someone who is unsure what to play. That does happen from time to time, however a lot of my fittings come from guys who just played the same thing for 20 years and I convinced them to do the fitting just to give them closure. Most of them agree to it and I would say a good 60% of people end up switching.
      My point in that is that a lot of people are playing golf balls they really like and they think are giving them the max performance, but it just ends up all being hype in their head bringing false confidence.

    Appreciate the list. agree on Kirkland. Balls today have a vast options for all abilities. Much more so than when I grew up (age 57 now) One must decide what is their top reasons for a ball of choice. For me as a 3-4 hcp, that is short game trust, putting/feel, distance is not my top item but has to be a factor of not a dog. 98-102 SS. Tried them all. Still revert back to ProV1. TP5 is solid, Tour response is good. Vice Pro plus is very playable and I have played it recently. Note: I practice only with ProV in my short game (75% of my practice time). That is key to me of whatever ball people play is to use it practicing where it can matter most. Note: yesterday travel group is best shot format. I chipped in for birdie on par 3 we missed green. 244 par 4 I hit 5 wood to about 20 yards made up and down with 3 foot putt. ProV1. But I practice those constantly and it pays off.

    I think most golfers don’t understand compression and what that number means to your swing. My driver speed is on par with yours (95-100). I only use DTC balls (Sugar, Snell, Vice or OnCore) and they must be 3 piece urethane covers with 80-85 compression, that gets me the most distance but still enough stopping power on the green. Currently using an old box of new Snell MTB Prime after using all of my Prime 3.0’s. I will reorder the 3.0’s after the 2 dozen MTB’s are gone.

    Good information thanks. I'm an 18 handicapper, slow swing speed and I recently decided it's time to move up to a 3-piece ball. I've been searching in the budget 3-piece zone (sorry Titleist I'm not paying $60 a dozen). I had bought into all the marketing that slow swing speed players need soft balls and the 3-piece balls are a bit harder and outside of the traditional soft zone of 2-piece balls. That's one of the things that's held me back. MyGolfSpy ball test crew swears up and down that slow swing speed players should not be so concerned about low-compression balls. I finally bit the bullet and went with MaxFli Tour ball (85 compression). They are well-reviewed and the multi box (4) discount gets the price point down to a reasonable range (high 20's a dozen). It's early in my on-course use but wow I can really see how it sticks to a green if you strike an approach shot decent.

    • @GolfBallAddict
      @GolfBallAddict  3 місяці тому +2

      There's definitely a lot of opinions on golf ball compression. A couple of things to keep in mind here:
      For slow swingers I do still recommend lower compression golf balls, however that term is kind of relative. I still want to know how good of a player you are and how well you strike the iron. There are low compression golf balls that are three piece. Srixon q star tour, wright and ditson, oncore elixir, vice air, Chrome soft, just to name a few off the top of my head.
      For me the biggest question is how consistently you're striking the iron. The main difference I have found between firmer golf balls and softer golf balls is that when you Miss hit the softer golf balls, they forgive you so much more.

    I've seen a lot of other testing that came out much different from yours on the Kirkland. A few yards shorter with more spin, but the biggest complaint was the durability. Problem for most golfers, myself included is that golf is way too expensive and most of us actually suck pretty badly at the game. Price of a cheap round of golf in my area is $50+. If you want a morning tee time on the weekend, break out $75 at a minimum. Ball price matters, especially when you might only hit it once or twice before you send it swimming or camping. I understand that we might not be playing our best golf with that ball, but most of us only get to play once or twice a month & hardly ever play our best golf anyway. Add the price of 10 lost golf balls at $3 each, then you're adding another $30 to a round that already cost $50+. Add a beer or 3 and before you know it your round of golf cost $100-$150. It's not dying on a hill for a golf ball. It's simple economics and saving money where I can allows me to play more golf if I can actually find the time.

    • @GolfBallAddict
      @GolfBallAddict  3 місяці тому

      So I agree with everything you just said. There's only one flaw in what you mentioned, the reason I created this channel was so that we could find the best performing golf balls for the money. It's one of the main target goals of the channel.
      With that being said, there are many many golf balls we have tested that are actually cheaper than the Kirkland that performed twice as good. I understand value matters, and I'm in that same boat. I refuse to spend more than $35 a dozen for golf balls. However the Kirkland is my 93rd ranked golf ball. The Wilson zip on the other hand, is my number two ranked golf ball and it's a dollar a golf ball.
      So what I really want all my viewers to understand is yes I understand you need value, but that doesn't mean you have to play a dog water golf ball.

    Very interesting. But you definitely need to test the latest versions of the balls. I just turned 83, have played for over 62 years, have a 16-17 handicap I hope to lower. Obviously swing speed has declined with age. And I still play forged blades with weak lofts (34 degree 7 iron). I get carry of 190-200 and total distance of about 210-220 with an occasional 235 with my driver, so last year moved up to the 5800-6200 tees in order to have second shots into the par 4s of 110-160 yards. Also replaced my 3,4 and 5 irons with a 7 wood and 9 wood. So I have become very interested in finding a ball that will give me 5 or 10 yards more distance on drives. But like many mid-handicappers I often miss a green short or to either side and face a pitch or chip with a wedge. Make a lot of use of my 60 degree lob wedge for 20 to 50 yard pitches. Have no trouble hitting it high on to the green. But for either a full approach shot with anything from a pitching wedge to a 6 iron, and for those LW pitches, I would like to also find a ball that has a lot of greenside spin so that my shots won't roll off firm fast greens. More distance on drives, yet better stopping with irons and wedges. That's asking a lot. Usually you can get one or the other, not both.
    I am a member at the PGA Super Store in Rockville, Maryland, and have taken advantage of their practice bays with overhead Foresight launch monitors to test literally dozens of different balls for hours, from the Wilson Duo and Callway Super Soft all the way up to the Pro V1X left dash. Played with them as well. And I have also closely studied the results of the My Golf Spy ball tests for lower swing speeds. Call me a weirdo golf nerd. Lately I have found that the Wilson Triad is a pretty good all around choice. Compared it with the latest Callaway Super Soft is, which is improved, gives good distance on drives, but you definitely loose 1000 rpm or more spin on wedge shots. If you rub one of them, you can feel they have a much "stickier" surface than any tour ball, no doubt to increase friction and spin, but still. I would agree with you that when I have looked at the data with many other balls, at my swing speed I definitely do not get max distance from either the Titleist ProV1 or V1x or left dash V1x, and also do not get max distance from the Bridgestone balls for swing speeds under 105, either the RX or RXS. It takes using the launch monitor to tell that, since mid-handicappers like me simply don't produce sufficiently precise and consistent results out on the course on which to base a determination.

    Nailed it! I agree with what you have presented here. And I very much like how you have said that two piece balls can be better for average and even well above average golfers than many if not most urethane covered golf balls. Most golfers aren’t going to shoot lower scores because they played a golf ball that spins more on wedges and partial wedges. They are going to shoot lower scores by playing a golf ball that goes a little further, and curves a little less in the air, like many two piece golf balls.

    Excellent and well thought review however I believe a lot of players pick their golf ball by popularity and not what performs best for them. I personally play the Callaway Supersoft because I love the feel and control on the greens. I personally prefer an orange ball because I can see it easier. The durability is amazing and I've played three rounds withe the same ball and the distance stayed consistent. I definitely agree that the Kirkland is not a good ball except for gaining strokes on your score but if it works for you as a golfer then stick with it. Again, golfers need to pick a ball that suits their game! I am a 60 year old with a 85-90 mph swing with a 9 handicap and I've changed my ball numerous times over the past 30 years to suit my game and swing. Same thing goes for my clubs, I have Taylormade, PXG, Ping and a Titleist in my bag because I find what works best for me not some PGA tour player who's getting paid and professionally fitted for his or her clubs. Life is short (just like most of my approach shots) so play more golf and have fun!

So far my best round taking 10 to 20 strokes off my game has been Pro V1. I'm not great and i know it but i play for results of getting better and will surely look for more forgiven balls.

    I am probably a below average golfer with a slower swing speed. Yet I play the Bridgestone BRX. I know that they do not maximize distance but they have a urethane cover so are very durable and they STAY on line. Plus I’ve been able to get them at $39 most of the time. The e6 has too little spin around the greens. Just my opinion FWIW

  • @lucynunya8180
    @lucynunya8180 2 місяці тому +1

    So I have a slower swing speed but my smash factor on all the clubs is in the 1.4 range. As a perfectly average golfer, I lose maybe a ball or two a round. MyGolfSpy’s ball test found low compression was less important. I play a 3 piece (Snell when I have them, Supersoft when not) and recently tried TM tour stripe. I definitely think feel around the green is most important and I like soft “feel.” Do you think a Chromesoft is worth it? When do you think it’s time to “move up” to a 4 piece ball?

    • @GolfBallAddict
      @GolfBallAddict  2 місяці тому +2

      So I do disagree with the lower compression argument, but that's for a different day. Let me try to answer your question the best I can.
      To start off, yes the Chrome soft would be a good ball. It's lower compression allows for tour like feel for people who have average swing speeds. So it's definitely worth a try. I also love the vice ProAir for this too. Little bit better of a value.
      As far as when to move up to a four-piece golf ball, it kind of depends because all four piece golf balls are different and have different compressions. But in my experience, I would say about 85% of 4-Piece golf balls are even too firm for me to compress at 98 mph. Four piece territory is usually 105 mph or greater.

      The cut red golf balls are a dollar a piece and are available at Walmart and target.
      The Wilson zip, my number two ranked golf ball, is also around a dollar a golf ball and available at Walmart and Amazon
      And honestly I know this one sounds weird. But the top flight XL distance can be either at a dollar golf ball or even a little cheaper and it's not bad for a beginner. I actually had pretty decent results with it
      Another great option is the maxfli soft fli.
      And finally off the top of my head, the Pinnacle soft.
      All these are great options and are about a dollar a golf ball

Still play the pro v1 but I got a deal (in the UK) on Tour Golds & new Z star and having JUST turned 65 but still playing to a decent level, when they’re starting to run out I’ll have to be looking for a new ball! My wife plays & loves her supersofts, she suffers from RA so I might have to look for another ball for her! I’m the golf tech geek not her! Edit to add, I tried the kirkland 2.0 and it WAS rubbish! I always played 2 piece balls because that's what the "Internet" says I should play because I have a slow swing speed (~85mph w/driver) and high handicap (21). A few months ago I found a ProV1 on the 5th hole and decided to play it the rest of the round. I had some of the longest and best hits I've ever had. So I decided to buy a dozen and I feel like I play a lot better with them. I'm getting more distance, accuracy, and getting the ball to stop on the green. My local shop sells used, excellent condition, ProV1s for $15/dozen. So I'm going to stick with them since I play better with them and they're cheaper than most 2 piece balls out there.

      My thing is, you can be playing the worst golf ball on the planet and be confident in it. I was playing the tp5 back in the day and thought I was hot stuff because I was playing a five-layer ball with tons of spin. However it wasn't until I lost my final one on the course and had to switch to a Duo soft to just finish the round. When I all of a sudden got 20 yards more distance, and pard 4 of the 5 last holes, that's when I knew something was up. That kind of propelled me to start the channel also.

    You're right, they are marketing geniuses! Many want to FEEL like a Tour Pro so they buy them even though it doesn't suit their gamee at all. I'm a 19 handicap and I play the Taylor Made Soft Response the majority of the time. I also really like Srixon balls! Not sure if they really suit my game but I like the Softfeel and QStar.

    Hello. Love the Channel! I just started playing golf less than two years ago (Long-time Tournament tennis player). I assume my swing speed is in the low to mid 80s. I have been using the Callaway SuperSoft and I'm reasonable happy. Two quick questions - How do I know which year they were manufactured? Also... I have a box of the ERC Soft that I have never used. Might they be a better option? Thanks!

    • @GolfBallAddict
      @GolfBallAddict  3 місяці тому +1

      The ERC is a good option but keep in mind it is for a little bit advanced player. If you find yourself shooting in the 80s it's a good ball but if you're still shooting 90s to 100s I would stick to two piece.
      As far as being able to tell the model, it's all about the alignment tool. Go on calloway's website to see what the current alignment tool looks like and compare it to what you have. From there you can kind of Google and see which model for each year and what they had

      Don't worry, it is never a mistake to try out a golf ball. The worst thing that could happen is you don't like them.
      With that being said, I do think you will overcompress them a little bit. You might lose some driver distance but you'll love the feel and forgiveness with the irons. It's a give and take.

    First time watching your videos. I gave up on the prov's years ago. I'm in my 50's and also a 9 handicap with a 101 driver swing speed. I actually have enjoyed the Wilson Duo's. Cheaper and just as good as most other balls. The only other ball I tested myself was better for my sing was Vice Pro's.

    • @GolfBallAddict
      @GolfBallAddict  3 місяці тому

      There's a good chance you might be losing a little bit of distance off the driver with the Wilson Duo, however for the majority of your other clubs you're probably doing just fine. If you love that feel, which I understand why you do because Wilson golf balls feel phenomenal, then just stick with it. I've heard people tell me the Wilson triad is a great three-piece model but I didn't have very much luck when I tested it the first time

      @@GolfBallAddict The put-off for me is the price of the Triad. I thought it was ok as I liked the new Duo 2.5's better. And for the price why not. If Wilson didn't do the buy 2 get 1 free from their Staff ball earlier this year, I would have bought several dozen of Vice Pro soft's. I either will play the Wilson or Vice, depending on who has good sales at the end of the year.... :)

  • @Abdullah_Chill

    😂😂😂😂I was ok until you turned on supersoft. Played that as a beginner and helped me get my handicap down. I only out grew the ball when I was approaching a single figure handicap. For me it was long off the tee and ok on approach shots. Hence, continued to play it.
    Tried Kirkland recently, might be ok with pitching shots but, lost loads of distance off the tee and with irons.
    It’s fine for tough courses where I don’t mind losing balls.

    Recent tests by Club Champion of the Kirkland 3.0 ball for those with a 115-120 SS found it to be very much like the ProV1. It may be great for the higher SS golfers but not for your speed or slower.

    • @GolfBallAddict
      @GolfBallAddict  2 місяці тому +1

      That's good to know! It doesn't surprise me with how firm it is, but I still think it's a huge mistake from kirkland. The majority of their market is budget golfers who swing average swing speed. In order to get that type of swing speed at 115 to 120 mph you are talking about a very select group of individuals. I think it limits their market too much, but hey that's just my two cents.
