There was a major corruption theme in mage guild quests, so no, you are not supposed to believe that all students in arcane university travelled all Cyrodill.

You are not wrong in your linking ‘coming to care about Martin -> he dead’ bit, but also we knew he was gonna die because Sean Bean.
Really enjoying your videos, thanks for making them

I saw your comment right as I was about to say, "Hey, you can't really blame Bethesda - he's voiced by Sean Bean." Lawl.
As an aside, I once saw a post where the prompt was "one sentence horror story with a twist": "Four Black guys and Sean Bean - nobody dies."

I gotta admit, the methodology for getting recommendations from the different Mage Halls actually makes sense to me - Oh, you want a recommendation? Well then oh boy, have I got a "bullshit I don't have the time and/or give a shit to do myself" task for you! It reminds me of my Psych 1000 class in college: Everybody was required to complete a certain number of hours participating in psych research taking place on campus *or* write a certain number of papers/essays on psych subjects from a list. I loved the idea of participating in research - how fun! - while my buddy completed his requirement by writing the essays. One thing I distinctly remember thinking, however, was how this was probably skewing the random samples for the research. It was a way of turning us all into valuable subjects for campus research, even if that meant the random sample turned into "a bunch of freshman college students". They didn't seem to care if that was a bad premise that could hurt the research, it was about meeting a quota. (It probably wouldn't surprise you to know that same teacher sold his own book as the required textbook for the class. It wasn't even a hardback, it was sold as a three-ring. Ugh. It was Pysch 1000 though, so I didn't bother to buy it.)
Anyway, my point is the arbitrary nature of something like fielding recommendations - of course there's no standardized format for earning the recommendations, it's whatever stupid task that authority figure needs at that moment. Why standardize it when it can be as simple as "go do this chore for me"? I think it works narratively as a way of showing the Mage's Guild officials - especially those at the Arcane University - are complacent and less interested in the actual study of magic, instead more interested in magical regulation and being rules enforcers. It just doesn't work as well mechanically because it's boring hunting down the incel who stole a mage girl's staff because his nice-guy-stalking-you routine wasn't going over with her very well.

A mage guild being run by a necromancer is a cool idea

37:30 Bruh, this dude basically stole that woman's anti-psychotic amulet for treating her schizophrenia because he doesn't like the fact that she has a mental illness.
Side note: "Haven't we sacrificed enough already?" might be a clue to the fact he's a necromancer - alluding to him (and his fellow necromancers who stayed in the guild) having to "sacrifice" their chosen school of magic.

57:53 lmao they can’t pass up taking advantage of cyrodiil’s crazy low necrophilia fines

Baurus trusts you because you know about Jauffre and Weynon Priory, but that doesn’t explain how or why he didn’t at least initially find it suspect that you’re standing over the emperor’s dead body.

The Oblivion Mages Guild certainly has its faults when it comes to its questline, but the structure of the guild is what I appreciate most about it. In theory, traveling to the different Guild Halls around Cyrodiil would have you learning the fundamentals in their school of magic speciality. Then, upon making adequate progress, you receive your recommendations and gain access to and admission in the Arcane University, where (again, in theory) your real learning in magicka would begin.
Sadly, the questline itself does not bear this out and there is precious little magic actually learned along the way. Oblivion and Skyrim both suffer from this. But I give the point to Oblivion because the Mages Guild at least had legitimate structure, and when you made it to the Arcane University, you actually feel as though you earned it.
Your criticisms are entirely justified, though, and it's no surprise the guild collapses entirely after the Champion of Cyrodiil abandons Nirn for the Shivering Isles to take up the mantle of Sheogorath. It's even less a surprise that it's replaced by two weak, feuding factions who are far more interested in playing politics against one another and currying favor with the nobility than they are with studying and practicing the arcane arts.

Saying "what if I was the bad guy" twenty times is a horrendous nitpick that got old fast. Yeah you're not entirely wrong but the theme of fate and being seen in the dreams of Uriel is why we're trusted. You said you don't like fate and I get that but it's not a reason to say the same thing over and over again
