Max dropped so many jewels for future drumming in this video. The greatest most soulful and technical drummer EVER. He,Art Blackey, and surely Buddy Rich
I'm so sorry I missed probably his last performance, it was in the Art museum of the Bronx, NY, and I worked a three doors up on that street, I could had gone in that late afternoon
A real gem. I had the honor to watch and hear him live several times in the late seventies and early eighties, including this quartet (and his double quartet with strings). It was one of the really great and lasting experiences each time. Whoever put his thumb down... but there's no accounting for taste.
I consider that this is Religious Music in 3/4. A true BeBop anthem played in waltz time. There is so much History behind this performance: Navarro, Dameron, Jazz in 3/4 Time, Clifford, Valse Hot, Rollins, and much more...
I love the way he adjusts his playing to each soloist, supporting and complimenting each one's style.

What a creative mind Max Roach - a truly advanced drummer, conceived the sway of the bait like no other.

Exciting karma to hear them live at this time in jazz history and so great to be able to hear this now.
13,000 views.....?
Just discovered the problem with modern day drummers...they don't watch the masters
This is true. No soul, no musicality just noise..
@@DrSamE I dig Eric Harland, he's got the griot vibe . Max was a giant, so glad I got to see and meet him.
@@ebaylistentomusic Envy. If you met Max. And of course there's some musical and nice modern drummers.
@@DrSamE 1984 in West Berlin and he could not have been kinder to all the young cats who came to meet him after the show.
@@ebaylistentomusic Thats too nice! I wasn't even born back then hah.
He is the MASTER!!!!!!

1984!?! That black & white makes it look more like 1964. I guess that was as high-tech as it got in East Berlin in 1984 lol
Never got to see Max live. Like Art Blakey, I had many opportunities to see these master drummers here in Seattle. A big fail on my part.
hard to imagine such a hip tv programme on commercial television , paradoxical though that may seem
As far as solo drums go there's no one like Buddy Rich.
Good show, Max is always enjoyable.
wow !!!!
Why the footage from 1984 looks like it was shot in 1947? The answer is - EAST, EAST Berlin.
Micing, though, is very 80's
....The Solo From "As Quiet As It's Kept"... And It Was Kept Awfully Quiet....
Black & White videotape in 1984 ? Weird !
The original was in color, the loss happened when transfered to the color system used in the west more than 20 yeard ago
Try stamp collecting. Come on 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Pretty dismal drum solo
Pretensios and very very boring plus totally overrated
