I'm 43 I've been a thrash metal, punk, ska, and rock drummer for the most part I'm loving the less is more approach to drumming It's a shame that there's not more of this around today
There are a lot of jobs drummers out there now... my neighbor is one of them . ... you just got to avoid all the mainstream crap ... it has no appreciation for real Beauty and Art in many cases . I'm from the Philadelphia area and back around 2003-2005 I noticed a lot of younger kids high school-aged and college-age all getting really heavy into jazz . I haven't been back to Philly in 12 and a half years now so who knows there's probably a lot more of a stronghold of jazz there more than ever before since there seems to be a new Resurgence and appreciation for all the Jazz Legends who came from Philly
Check out Max Roach and Tony Williams. Can't say they are "less is more," but they know how to use subtlety, understatement, melodic playing and silence to really fill out their music.
JO JONES HAS TO BE THE HAPPIEST DRUMMER I EVER SAW ALWAYS SMILING THROUGHOUT THE COMPLETE PERFORMANCE !!!!! HE NEEDS TO BE NAMED < SMILING JO JONES > !!!!!!!!!
That's Jimmy Slyde tap dancing whereas Milt Buckner is the organist. Xavion Glover told me that Mr. Slyde used to also hang with the great drummer Roy Haynes but at least this session with Slyde and Papa Jo was documented for us all to enjoy. Now there's a WHOLE lot of rhythm going down!
Really beautiful post. Thanks. I was lucky to meet Jo Jones and George Benson in the 70s. Serendipity! Mr. Jones I met on the train from Boston to NYC in 1978 when I was going for a vibe lesson with Dave Samuels. I recognized him and said hi. He saw my stick bag and said, "Sit down." I was transfixed for 4 hours. Mr. Benson I met at the Jazz Workshop in Boston around 1971-72. My dad took me to see him. They did 4 night stands with an afternoon Sunday jam session. My dad took me to the Sunday afternoon. I could not believe guys sitting in who were my age (18-22 range)-and were good. On a break I asked my dad if it would be ok to tell Mr. Benson how great he was and go up to him. Dad said sure. So, I did. Mr. Benson was so nice, gracious and cool. I never asked for autographs. My dad said that was rude.
What an amazing life to walk into a club and possibly see drumming, guitar playing, AND tap dancing all taking place. I would stay til the lights burned out.
The double CD of this session is indispensable! Not just music, but great interviews with "Papa" talking about early drumming techniques, the old days, etc. Hard to find but worth it for drummers and Jo Jones fans! It's simply called "The Drums by Jo Jones".
I remember reading an interview with Louie Bellson, where he said that he and Buddy Rich were once asked in a TV show who their favorite drummer was. Both agreed on "Papa" Jo Jones, so I went out and got some of his must-have recordings. 20 years later, he is still my favorite drummer, too.
Pity Rich couldn't have learnt to smile like Jones when he played. I know it sacrilege but I think Rich was so overrated compared to so many of these black guys around at the time.
Jo Jones......The Man plays the drums with a reverence and deftness reserved for few drummers. You don't stay so long in the Count's band unless you are the very best. He smiled because he knew he WAS the best!
Epic!!!! EPPIIIIICCCCC!!!! WHY DOES THIS HAVE DISLIKES????? THIS IS AMAZING!!!!!!! YOUNG GEORGE BENSON?! PAPA JO?!? TAP DANCE AS AN INSTRUMENT WITH A ROUND ROBIN????!!! 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾🖖🏾🖖🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾
No matter how explosive, funky or fast some of the super-drummers of today are, it's always inspiring, refreshing and fun to go back to the master of jazz drumming papa jo.
My favourite UA-cam Video. Pleasure Treasure! Merci beaucoup. Those Guys got Style, Attitude and Humor along with Technical Ability, Groove and Swing. Things I miss on most Drummers/ Musicians today.
Quand la musique était humaine, quand les gens avaient du talent! Never will we see and hear incredible talent lile this again. Happy to have lived it, sad to leave it behind.
Fluid, melodic, thematic....awsome!
This made me happy to be alive.
Well said and me too. Chases the blues away.
Just incredible to see the best guitarist, the best drummer and the best tap dancer playing together.....
@howard bianchi your autolike is perfect 👍🏼

You might rethink that statement after seeing Sonny Payne with Basie and Lionel Hampton on his gig. Just saying...LOL!
These guys are just phenomenal !!! What a piece of pure art right there !!
Just WOW. The Benson, Jones collaboration with the tap dancer Milt Buckner was amazing in its explanation of rhythm.

@@AlvesterGarnett Yeah but that would be something to see Milt Buckner tap dancing.

He's so natural. I love the way he seamlessly goes between a traditional and matched grip...and that doesn't even make a noise.
Wonderful memories of my youth, following all of these JAZZ greats and meeting them in person after their sets. Great musicians and pure, great jazz!
