Sophie taking Sisi’s children away may have been normal for the time but that doesn’t make it not evil. Maybe she wasn’t evil, but she was cruel

This is another example of "presentism." Many, if not most, upper class children of that era were given over to wet nurses and nannies and rarely saw their parents. Mothers of that class who nursed or raised their children themselves were considered odd or to clinging. Please stop judging earlier times by current standards.

@@LJB103 for a long time, marital rape was not considered a crime. That didn’t mean that the girls didn’t suffer from it. Just because something was normal doesn’t mean it didn’t cause pain. And this wasn’t 200BC, this was just over 150 years ago. Sophie referred to Sisi as a ‘silly young mother’ and she was likely the origin of the pamphlet left on Sisi’s desk which described a queen who didn’t produce a son as useless and a dangerous foreigner who should be sent home, even if she didn’t put it there herself. She was only 3 years into her marriage and already being treated like a burden for not immediately having a son.

I liked to inform myself from this kind of amazing work! I think you forgot to mention that Sophie and Franz Karl actually have six children, the fourth child being a beautiful girl who was short-lived, this due to an epilepsy attack, I believe. I consider Sophie as tragic as Elisabeth of Baviera, they we're both victims of the strict viennese court and history make them seem like villans when in actually, Elisabeth was just a young sensible liberal girl who was not ready for the role they put her in, meanwhile Sophie was mature and believe her ideals were the ones that were going to save an empire on the edge of collapsing. I also beloved the knowledge and goodness Franz Karl spread amoung his people. Thank you for this amazing work, I cannot wait for the next video! ^^

She actually wasn't that bad, according to her letters, but it's hard to tell from a historian's perspective.
I think she was deeply concerned for the Austrian monarchy, given what it went through in 1848 and she even made her husband abdicate, bc she saw the bigger picture. She definitely wasn't the monster some movies want to show. She was a loving mother and mother in-law.

I believe she was a cruel mother-in-law/aunt to Empress Sisi. I read Sophie was a victim of the Viennese court bullying but when Elisabeth came into the picture, Sophie became part of the clique and in turn, became the bully of Elisabeth. Sophie was known to be nice-nasty to Elisabeth plus Franz Joseph was a bit slow and weak towards his mother which made Sisi isolate herself even more from the Viennese court. And it didn't help that Sophie never became Empress which made her jealous of Sisi.

Emperor Ferdinand also had hydrocephalus, but he seems not to have been challenged as was often said. The idea that Maximilian was Sophie's child by an affair with the Duke of Reichstadt (the son of Napoleon and Archduchess Marie Louise) is starting to gain acceptance - or at least no longer being dismissed out of hand. Excellent video.

Thank you very much for this very interesting and important video! I would love to hear and to get to know more about Archduchess Sophie, I mean, her private life and especially political influence. The movies present her as someone very evil 🦹‍♀️ and mean, and though she didn’t write badly about Sissi, the correspondence of the late tells us vice verse. There are so many controversial issues on these points and they’ll remain so. With best regards ❤
