Biography On The Parents Of Sisi - Not A Happy Marriage : Maximilian Joseph in Bavaria was born in Bamberg on December 4, 1808, and died in Munch on November 15, 1888. He was the only child of Duke Pius August in Bavaria and Princess Amalia Louise of Arenberg. His wife, Marie Ludovika Wilhelmina , was born in Munich on August 30, 1808, and also died there on January 26, 1892. She was the fifth daughter of King Maximilian I Joseph of Bavaria and his second wife, Caroline of Baden. The couple is best known for being the father of Austrian Empress Elisabeth, and the grandfather of the Belgian Queen Elisabeth.

Sisi looked exactly like her mother! Maxmilian and Ludovika were a beautiful couple when young but they didn't age well.

I know unhappy marriages were often the norm, but it breaks my heart so many men and women were forced to marry those they didn’t love. Real life royal marriages are hardly ever like the fairy tales…

Unfortunately unhappy marriages were often the norm. If you were lucky you would end up with a spouse who was happy to ignore you, or who you could reach an understanding with, but to be happily married at the time was a fairytale more than a reality

Well. So much of this sounds like my father's family who were Czech. The Austrian influence in this area was strong. Although the Czechs hated being under the thumb of the Austrians, the cultural similarities were not so different, especially for middle classes. You married someone and even if you didn't get along, you put up the pretense that you did. What a life wasted.
