Pertwee's acting doesn't get enough credit here. Not just for his courage speech (which gets all the praise it deserves) but also his devastation at thinking he's lost Jo and the cold glower he gives the Dalek in the elevator is top-quality stuff. In my eyes, he's one of the best, most disciplined actors who's ever played the Doctor.
Planet of the Daleks is an entertaining action romp where Terry Nation rummages through the Daleks' back-catalogue and recycles the best elements of their previous stories. Bringing back the Thals was a brilliant move that ties back to their introduction and this story has, for me, Pertwee's defining moment as the Doctor: "Courage isn't just a matter of not being frightened, you know. It's being afraid and doing what you have to do anyway".
A returning favorite here as Bernard Horsfall as Taron. He was also Gulliver in Mind Robber and one of the Time Lords judges in The War Games. Also, to date, Jo is one companion, followed by Jamie, who we can see a change from her first episode. Stronger, braver, smarter.
One of the things that I love a lot about this one is the reddish purple jacket Jon Pertwee wears. There’s a photo of Peter Capaldi wearing it when he filmed Twice Upon a Time and his face when he has it on is one of my favourite things ever - it’s also really cool that the original jacket was hanging in the background on the Tardis during the 12th Doctor’s regeneration.
I didn't know this, that's really cool. That's one of the main things I noticed in this episode was the whole jacket, shirt, trousers and shoes combo and how the whole colour scheme subtly match everything so well together into a really cool, groovy, funky style. Loved it!
I'm sensing a Jo Grant cosplay in the next Doctor Who December. If Rocco has a penchant for tailored ruffled shirts, cool bow ties, wigs, and crushed velvet, he could join you as 'Rocctor Who" 😀
Jess, I am always delighted when you talk about fashion in Who. I mean, the show spans over four decades of culture, plus all the alien and future cultures it tries to depict, costume design is a huge part of the show overall. I would LOVE a video, not just on Jo, but fashion throughout the years in Who - as there's plenty of companions to come that I think you'll be very excited to see serve looks all over time and space.
@@somerandomguy2073 Very cool video, thanks! But honestly, it's a bit too bad the video only does NewWho, which is far less interesting to me fashionwise than Classic.
I think of the Pertwee run having this concept of the Doctor being exiled to live amongst his favorite "alien race" really fostering his humane side. Pertwee really epitomized this side of the Doctor very well. He became more human than human throughout this run. Think about early 3rd Doctor episodes and his personality then to this point. You see him going through an evolution of character and connecting with others. At this point we're really seeing that side of him come out as he has that moment with the Thal scientist (not the only moment in the run, but one of its finest) where it's the Doctor being very candid, opening up and connecting with another living soul.
Planet of Daleks is one of my favourite third doctor stories. Love the way it carries directly on from Frontier in Space. Jo has some really nice scenes in some of the episodes.
I think it`s fair to say, that Peter Capaldi`s 12th Dr., based his fashion choices on Jon Pertwee`s 3rd Dr. ones. Which of course, lead to the 1st Dr. referring to him as "the Dandy", in the Three Doctor story. Personally I think, there was reason to consider him more of "The Scarlet Pimpernel" character.
I remember when I started watching _Doctor Who_ as a kid, my Dad told me that when he was a kid, the aliens were sometimes just people holding rugs around their bodies. I assumed he was being hyperbolic, until I saw this several years later.
I loved hearing the post-episode thoughts about Jo's fashion choices! I'd be down for a whole video about it. I pretty much feel the same way as you, both about Dalek episodes in general being hit-and-miss but this episode also being really good so far. :) The conversation about courage was great and I like the supporting characters a lot too.
Katy Manning is still very glamorous today and, as a personality, could probably outshine the sun! Being short-sighted didn't always make things easy though. Just think back to those quarry scenes, with her in platform boots...
This is a really good action story. I remember seeing it in 1973 and loving it, great to see the Thals back and being more positive against the Daleks whilst still maintaining their intelligence and compassion.
Terry Nation's contributions to Doctor Who are all superb. If you're loving the survival aspects of this story (and his Dalek stories to an extent), I would highly recommend watching his 2nd biggest show following on from Doctor Who called Blake's 7, it's easily one of the best shows the BBC has ever made. Strong characters, themes, and villains are found throughout.
The inter-Thal disputes really flesh out the characterisation and it's nice to see Bernard Horsfall (who, incidentally, was the Time Lord who exiled the Doctor in the first place!) bringing gravitas to proceedings. The Doctor's conversation with Codal (Tim Preece - who played a rather less sympathetic character in a classic British sitcom a few years later) is one of those 'moments of charm' Jon Pertwee requested for his Doctor in every serial. Some people regard it as mawkish or preachy, but it helps to reaffirm the character's moral certitude - which even today tends to be a grey area.
I’ve heard a lot of people saying this Dalek story isn’t good. And I COMPLETELY disagree. This is a Dalek story that does something different and crazy! The Daleks trying to turn themselves invisible whilst experimenting with bacteria? HELL YEAH! This is something the Daleks would do!
My 1st ever Doctor Who story. I was 11 and found it on the TV early morning (I'm 32 now). Pertwee was my 1st Doctor and always has a place in my heart.
Yep he was 'my' Doctor too. Spearhead from Space, Saturday the 3rd of January 1970. Can't say I remembered a WHOLE lot of it at the time (I was only 4 and a bit) but I DO remember the shop window dummies coming to life and the fight at the factory near the end

There are people who trash this story for the invisible aliens and special effects, but I get so annoyed by that thinking. Use Your Imagination!! This story does have so much going for it! Jo going out on her own on an alien planet, something she'd never do when she started. The Thals returning is fun, and we see they're still at war with the Daleks. Lots of fun!!
If you mean that in terms of clothes worn, then most definitely. The styles he keeps rocking in this episode is just so on point. Craps over many of the men's styles we have today for sure. Don't even get me started on Joe's style, so groovy, funky and cool, which fits incidental because as a teenage Katy Manning (Jo) was for a time a model for Biba! Late 60's early 70's British fashion styles were known around the world as the best!
Another reason why Jon Pertwee is my favourite Doctor not only because of his karate fight and his cool car but also he has a good taste in outfits and has a good sense of style. I don't understand why this isn't as popular Dalek story I think this is a fantastic Dalek story it's also nice to see the Thals back a species that hadn't been seen since "The Daleks" (1963) and this is its tenth season (tenth anniversary) the scene with Jo and the tape recorder is very similar to another story which didn't feature The Doctor or his companions at all back in The Hartnell days "Mission to the Unknown" (1965). Jon Pertwee has said on record that he the Daleks were his least favourite monsters but said his favourite were the Draconians from the previous story.
Well there have been attempts to say his Time Lord character in The War Games was also his character later on. So it's three or four, depending on who you ask.
"Jo's missing on a hostile planet full of Daleks, there's something wrong with the TARDIS cuz the doors won't open and I'm rapidly running out of oxygen. Welp, I guess I'll go change my clothes." 😂
All of a sudden 'Jo Grant' became stunning in looks and style in this story. Apparently Jon Pertwee hated any scenes that showed his nose and nostrils. A great story lead into another. RIP Roger Delgado. He set the standard of 'The Master' and the others followed. Love your reviews :)
Terry Nation's 1st Dalek script for the show since 1966 contains some familiar features; from sentient plant-life, through invisible aliens on jungle worlds, even the Thals. Some might suggest this betrays a paucity of ideas, but with Dr Who's anniversary season in full flow it would be a hard-hearted person who didn't revel in the idea of some nostalgia. It is also one of the more visually colourful stories in the canon. And at least the Dalek voices sound right this time around!
I was looking forward to when you got to viewing this one. One of my favorites and very Doctor Who old school cannon. Loved the Tardis and other sets and the Doc getting back together with the Thals to go up against the Daleks. Also John Pertwee shines at his brightest in this one, especially his acting in the role. I don't know why he didn't wear this suit more often as well. It was a great look for him. Anyway, this episode is in the "best of Doctor Who" list for me.
I love planet of the daleks, it usually gets a bad rep since its basically just like the original dalek story. But it was the 10th anniversary so i think thats ok. Used to watch this one a lot on vhs with episode 3 in black & white
My favourite 3rd Doctor story, second is The Three Doctors. I also like that Jo's actress Katy Manning didn't really need to act in the scene with the invisible Spiridon as she is very short sighted in real life. Also like that she wore alot of rings as she was a nail biter when nervous and it was apparently Jon's suggestion.
I thought you'd be touched by lan, Barbara and Susan reference. And Jon Pertwee is so good in the role. Maybe his 'comic' background is what make his Doctor so good because timing is everything. When he thought Jo was murdered his face was clearly upset and shocked. A person he didn't want when Liz left, ended up being a close friend he had the upmost affection for. Special mention to Dudley Simpson who music sold the action, the acting, emotion and drama ever so powerful in the 1970s Doctor Who.
It IS LIKE a 12-part story. Very much a bit like Daleks' Masterplan, intentionally so, also a 12-parter, still legendary in 1973. But that's not to say it's the same. No spoilers here. You already know it's 12 parts! 😁 Anniversary Tenth Season stuff.

The Daleks from Spiridon are some of the Daleks in Matt Smith’s story, Asylum of the Daleks. This is another story I read as a Target novel before seeing it. What state are you in now? I am in CA just south of San Francisco.
In the Target novel, when the Doctor is laying down in the TARDIS, Jo watches as he starts to regenerate and she see's Tom Bakers Doctor than he uses the regeneration to heal himself.
Terrance Dicks would elaborate and add things when he wrote the novels. They were exploring things that they couldn't do in the TV show. In another story we had K9 flying around, which they couldn't do back in the 70's /80's.
@@fatwolf Where is this? I just checked my 1982 reprint of the novel and there no such thing. Jo is worried the Doctor is dying and only has hope he can heal himself (as he did in The Daemons- although that's not explicitly mentioned).
Yeah that would be great! I loved all the styles that Jo and the Doctor were rocking in in this particular episode at lot. Big up to early 70's British style trend. Also Katy Manning (Jo) who went to school with and best friends with Liza Minnelli, was as a teenage a fashion model for iconic British fashion label Biba!
I really like this story, but a few things bug me. For example, why have the Thals left the dead body of their commander sitting in the pilot's chair in their ship long enough to be cobwebbed? You'd think they'd have at least put him in a cabin. And how can the TARDIS run out of oxygen? It's designed to fly in space and has a massive interior. The plot seems to say the fungus blocks the door and that causes it, but again, it's airtight in flight, so how does that work?
Great story but I wish that it tied more with the previous one. E.g. sharing characters and set up. Otherwise fantastic. Spiradon is a imaginative alien world. Wish we can see it again in NuWho. Love the thals, they all have their own character arcs which are handled well, nothing to fantastic or elaborate but given care, again need to come back. The Thals regarding the Doctor as a figure of legend reminds me of Series 6&7 where The Doctor became "too loud, too noisy" Also I'm a bit annoyed about the cliffhanger with the dalek reveal especially since the Doctor was looking for them in the first place

Impeccable fit on the Doctor this serial, the first of my four favorite Third Doctor drips
Katy Manning wore her own rings (and did some of her own stunts).
I don't know about others but I'd totally be down for a video rating Jo's outfits
Glad you liked them! Great stuff is a comin'
A lot of fans don't really talk a lot about this story, but it's one my favorites.
Hey Jess. Is there a po box to send you goodies? ☺
Clearly the Spirodon's hunt Barney the Dinosaur judging by the furs.
Hope you see the 2 Dalek movies featuring Peter Cushing:
Doctor Who and the Daleks & Daleks: Invasion of Earth 2150.
The Daleks from Spiridon are some of the Daleks in Matt Smith’s story, Asylum of the Daleks. This is another story I read as a Target novel before seeing it. What state are you in now? I am in CA just south of San Francisco.
Loving your reaction sesskasays. oh......is that a ST:VOY reference?
In the Target novel, when the Doctor is laying down in the TARDIS, Jo watches as he starts to regenerate and she see's Tom Bakers Doctor than he uses the regeneration to heal himself.
That isn't a thing
Terrance Dicks would elaborate and add things when he wrote the novels. They were exploring things that they couldn't do in the TV show. In another story we had K9 flying around, which they couldn't do back in the 70's /80's.
@@fatwolf Where is this? I just checked my 1982 reprint of the novel and there no such thing. Jo is worried the Doctor is dying and only has hope he can heal himself (as he did in The Daemons- although that's not explicitly mentioned).
Your flying by his era
It be so cool if you did video on Jo clothing it is very 70s. I love it to,
Yeah that would be great!
Jess should definitely react to the 3rd Doctor dressed in 70's gear. It would be such fun - and she would rock it!
One quick question. With as large and basically infinite inside that the Tardis is, how the hell did it run out of air? lol
The Daleks unleashed COVID into the atmosphere before their invasion lol 😂😅
My favorite Dalek/Pertwee Story.
Katie Manning has said that the reason for all the rings was to stop her from biting her nails.
I'm a fan of the 'silly' Prentis Hancock - always so grumpy, even in Space 1999.
The Thals regarding the Doctor as a figure of legend reminds me of Series 6&7 where The Doctor became "too loud, too noisy"
Also I'm a bit annoyed about the cliffhanger with the dalek reveal especially since the Doctor was looking for them in the first place
Jess, make the videos you want to make. I would absolutely watch a video of you talking about the character's outfits.
Katy Manning bit her nails all the time, Jon Pertwee suggested all the rings on her fingers to keep her from doing that
Good Reactions to a giid story, but don't judge someone too early. I had a lots of Courage once. Oh! Sorry. I meant Courgettes.
Have your husband watch the shows with you sometime!! Have a fun weekend together
I love you, you like the 3rd Doctor
John wasn’t a fan of the up nostril camera shot.
James bond dr who.
2:34 gonna take flack for this...but "Blink" is overrated, and cant stand that episode.
I am going to just say this was not one of my favorite stories.
