I think there’s something wonderful in a story about a time traveller where just one phone call about the passing of a character you never meet in the modern era could change him around. Cause it sort of reminds the audience how old of a character he is and also is just a wonderful tribute to Nicholas Courtney.
I remember being shocked to learn that this episode was mostly disliked, as it is one of my absolute favorites. Granted I must admit my bias being a big lover of River Song. However, just for the "You are forgiven, always and completely forgiven." and "I can't let you die, without knowing you are loved-" moments alone land this episode amongst the best of Doctor Who for me. A As someone who's had family members try to end their own lives before, for some reason that speech hit me harder. I know that's not what it's about, but someone thinking they don't matter... for River to show the Doctor that he's loved and remembered and matters and has done so much good. God it still guts me. I also think they are a couple of moments that really show insight into their relationship as partners and individuals and I really love and character moments that can provide the audience introspection and analysis into said characters. I'm glad to be one of the apparent few who really adores this finale.
The reason why they did the Brigadier scene was because he just passed away then and it was a tribute. I think, they did an ""in memory of" at the end of the 11th Hour for Elisabeth Sladen and she is briefly mentioned in the episode with David Tennant and the new doctor. Sometimes you will notice little tribute easter eggs in the episodes. Blink and you will miss it.
@@JoshLStuff My bad. According to the internet, it was The Impossible astronaut. From Wiki: The episode was dedicated to Elisabeth Sladen, who passed away four days before the episode's initial broadcast. The dedication was shown before the episode on BBC1 and Space, and after the episode on BBC America. The dedication was omitted from the DVD and Blu-ray release. Due to a typographical error made at the start of her acting career, it displays 1948 as her birth year, when it should say 1946.
You need more details. He first appeared with the second Doctor and kept coming back and he appeared with most of the classic doctors. I think he may have appeared in more episodes than anybody else?
Yeah, bit more of an adventure/"romp" this one than many finales but I thought it was a lot of fun. Some fans found the Teselecta solution a bit of a cop-out and I can see that - didn't bother me but they _did_ lean pretty heavily into "That's _really_ the Doctor and he's _really_ dead" so I get it (it only _kinda_ is and he _really isn't_ :). And River's story, one of my favourites on the show, just keeps on rolling (I _love_ little details like seeing where she went immediately after 5x05 - doesn't _matter_ it's just cool :).
7:10 I didn’t start watching Doctor Who until series 7, so Kate was there pretty immediately, and in hindsight very immediately from the point that her father died, just 4 episodes. There was no doubt a real concerted effort to bring Courtney back to the main series that just could not get the desired results before he died. The fact that it ends up being a Redgrave makes me wonder if they had her specifically in mind all that time
7:11 the brigadier is the doctors oldest friend from classic who (he died in real life a few months before this was doctor who way of acknowledging him) very sad 😢 he was one of the best actors/ characters in the shows history
“River song didn’t get all from you, sweetie” badass Amy! And when this first aired and I heard “the question you’ve been running from all yours lives, the question that must never be answered, Doctor Who?” My brain exploded I was so excited 😂 love this episode
The Silence is the 11th Doctor's overarching story. The next season is setting up the question and Trenzalore. The season does have it's own mystery, but that also gets connected.
That Tesselector is a pretty effective infiltration tool. It even grew a beard and continued aging while the Doctor was living comfortably inside with his Tardis the whole time.
Twice in this episode, the Doctor told River that she is always and completely forgiven. I believe that's the message for River Song which the dying Doctor whispered into Melody Pond's ear in "Let's Kill Hitler." That's why Melody was so moved - as it began to dawn on her that she was River Song and that the Doctor forgave her always and completely.
I believe that the end of Let's Kill Hitler was when he told her his name, since we know from this episode he did not whisper it during the wedding. Her response, "Well I'm sure she knows", makes sense assuming she was still unaware of the significance of his name at that point, or that it was secret. Your theory makes good sense though, probably a better theory! (I can't really explain why River would've been so moved just hearing his name if she didn't know it was significant)
I've been looking forward to this reaction so much!! Side note: I was wondering what's happened with your Agents of SHIELD reactions, if that's okay to ask? :)
This finale is a mess, but a mess I love 😂 the Doctor teselecta looks so grumpy leading up to getting married, but the Doctor inside the teselecta is so giddy about it all. He's got a partner who, even so early in her timeline, he can trust with the secret that he's actually alive. In her timeline, she doesn't tell Amy and Rory for years and years, not until she thinks it's necessary.
Honnestly even if the show ends sometimes i kinda hope we never actually learn his name that would defeat the point of the whole show.... Besides it would be pretty anitclimatic for them to just give us random name lol

Moffat writing can be confusing at times, yes. But I think this finale is fine. You can make sense of it (as opposed to all the stupid retconning from Chibnall 🤢). And I still think all this forewshadowing leads BEAUTIFULLY in the series 7 finale. Well, the christmas special actually but it is the last episode with Matt Smith. I know I can say that here but not on any other channel. But what I'm saying is, I'll defend Time Of The Doctor until the day I die. Because it manages to answer SO many things at once in a satisfying manner. It's a melancholy episode for me and people have complained with no end about that episode and I'm sick of it. Perhaps SOME small moments seem a bit forced in it, yes. But everything else is just a really clever conclusion and I ADORE The Doctor's final speech. And from then on begins the most glorious era of the show with the greatest Doctor ever.
Theres a big thing about this one I don’t like and a small thing I do. The big thing: time passing is what makes it possible for things to happen at all. If time stops, everything, by definition, stops. Possibly forever, since there wouldn’t be a moment in time where things could change to restart it again (disclaimer: I’m not a physicist). I like to think have a decent suspension-of-disbelief, but that was a bridge too far for me. The small thing: Amy’s understandably upset about having murdered someone. River’s first response is a rationalization, which I really like because I felt showed some lingering psychopathy; just a bit around the edges.
A weird follow up on this: I just googled “Vandaleur” to see where Moffat might have gotten the name. There was a “Giles Vandaleur“ who served in WWII who was part of Operation Market-Garden… which was the action which literally resulted in the coining of the phrase “a bridge too far”. Zero idea if Giles was the origin of the name, though. :)
The very first time The Doctor met River, she dies. Watch that again knowing what you know now. And of course there is more to come of River Song. I'd say more, but...spoilers, sweetie. ;)
Yeah, Patreon is WAY further ahead (as, they're current and just got the 2024 Christmas Special yesterday) so it was fun to edit River's earlier episodes when I knew so much of her story by that point.
Controversial opinion but this was one of my least favourite seasons i felt it was abit too complicated, slow and abit boring the best two out of all them for me was "The Doctor's Wife" and "Let's Kill Hitler". Because i'm more of a Classic Who fan the most emotional scene out of this whole entire episode for me was the death of Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart that was the most heartbreaking scene as his actor Nicholas Courtney had died in 2011 around about nearly the same time as Elisabeth Sladen who played Sarah Jane Smith the eye-patches was a tribute to him as he played the evil side of the Brigadier in a parallel world from the story "Inferno" and Jon Pertwee was one of my favourite Doctors other than that though i found this to be one of the worst season finales to be honest. The scene where the Doctor and River Song get married i never thought of this as a proper marriage i feel they call them husband and wife as a joke alot of people misunderstand this it was done so the Doctor could play for time and to distract River from meddling with time atleast that's how i view it because the Doctor is an a-sexual character he's not into romance his romance is seeing the universe.
That's understandable. Writers and saying things and meaning another yeah well we see it a lot in Doctor Who but got to get that audience interested with words the meanings that trigger them emotionally right? They make sense for the show but got to appeal to normal people somehow I guess. Good enough writing and a good cry. Or a good enough mix of time travel concepts as long as they make enough sense as gets complicated and complicated doesn't mean good witting unless it lands as anyone can make it complicated and make no sense. In terms of episodes, uh I think it's fair to say. Let's Kill Hitler is very word heavy and complicated though. But presents interesting things but also feels like not the library in a sense but the focus on a character then the other events only well more so the time period doesn't matter the rest does while both aspects in the library are happening and land. If that makes sense in a weird way I'm wording it. The Astronaut and 2nd one I mean most details are easily presented just waiting around for them to show or say it again. We see aspects connect to the rest. It works well enough. Doctor 's Wife is a good one of the trafis, a TARDIS junkyard, good dialogue and such. Black Spot to me is just Girl in the fireplace and another one episode aka a siren/space hosptial I mean sure..... Some middle space thing. Night Terrors again oh some childhood fear and oh not their sad it isn't a natural child and oh the dolls and what not. It works but eh pass. They don't have to be core to the main storyline to be good of course. Girl who waited I mean. It's fine of a what if but even episodes like Father's Day annoys me because Adam in Long Game does something stupid and for the audience and rules sure but Rose does something stupid right after learning the consequencess. It felt like an excuse for getting the audience emotional besides stretching the rule again. To me some episodes at least RTD S1-4 era had a lot of one is one way another is another. Like library has shadows, midnight is similar but well more acting then the rest going on in the library. You see story dynamics of one then different way another and it got really odd to see well that's better then that one at that way of presenting that similar concept. Closing Time felt like filler and almost a 42 type episode, a has its place but 1 scene is relevant and that's it the rest is filler. Demon's Run is fair I think of bridging the gaps for the storyline of the season/series, not just oh the reveal but other factors. But just having 2 astronaut, 1 demon's Run, 1 let's Kill hitler and wedding of river song is what 6 episodes They couldn't do that like a Flux or S4 seasonal specials format I guess so filler other ones that have a place like doctor 's wife with a good mix of ideas and the rest are pretty forgettable or boring or do the job but just there. I don't think much of this series/season either to be fair.just the important ones were more memorable. They don't all land I'm not saying they are masterpieces by any means. They have their moments for sure. I don't take the words and meanings seriously and they are stretched of meaning , metaphors and messages and more for audiences and universe concepts but since when haven't they like YANA and others either in Modern Who. It happens all the time. But audiences love to cry and take things too seriously. XD Can't say for Classic Who as not seen enough of it to comment of but it didn't have writing like this for sure. Classic Who, yeah the Brigadier mention, that is unfortunate for sure.
One of the most underwhelming endings of a season ever, maybe not as bad as the lastest seasons finale which was pure garbage but this is still crap, he was in a robot suit ..so lame and a huge cop out, clearly Moffat came up with that idea last minute, and he himself said when the season started the Doctor wasn't a robot or a clone on the lake it was really him ..well he lied or like I said he didn't know how it was going to end. Oh and if the astronaut suit is automated why does it need River or anyone to be in it? Garbage, one of the worst story arcs easily, although I have to say the next episode is.....maybe the worst ever?
This finale was a result of the one constant in Doctor Who, the fandom complains about present Doctor Who, the series 5 finale was complained about for being too complicated along with the things leading up to the mid series break of 6x07 "A Good Man Goes to War." So this finale was made simpler to digest, it was also complained about during its time. Doctor Who fans: Complain about the present of the show Extol the virtues of the past of the show Worry about the future of the show It seems to be our Rule #1
This definitely matches the tone of a lot of the comments I receive, so I think you've hit the nail on the head. Personally, I'm just here for a good time. I'm current with modern Who and am at the end of season 11 of Classic Who over on Patreon and there hasn't been a single era yet that I haven't enjoyed for one reason or another.
My issue with this episode was the inclusion of "Winston Churchill, not that I had an issue with the character, just that spot in my mind should have been filled by Canton Everitt Deleware III., from the opening 2-parter. He started this with them, he should have been allowed to finish with them.
That is odd yeah 2 episodes, he is on the lake but not used again it is odd. Good pick up on that. I guess Churchill it's more iconic/more recognisable maybe? Or a leader of one country as a different leader of another, I guess was the point, not sure.
The actor is US-based, though, isn't he? The whole production of the openers were made in US, but Mark Sheppard might have had US based roles that would have prevented shooting the finale in the UK.
Having the question that should never be asked be the title of the show is such a fun moment
I think there’s something wonderful in a story about a time traveller where just one phone call about the passing of a character you never meet in the modern era could change him around. Cause it sort of reminds the audience how old of a character he is and also is just a wonderful tribute to Nicholas Courtney.

But just having 2 astronaut, 1 demon's Run, 1 let's Kill hitler and wedding of river song is what 6 episodes
They couldn't do that like a Flux or S4 seasonal specials format I guess so filler other ones that have a place like doctor 's wife with a good mix of ideas and the rest are pretty forgettable or boring or do the job but just there.
XD
Can't say for Classic Who as not seen enough of it to comment of but it didn't have writing like this for sure.
It has been a long time for me to say this to anyone. You are an idiot!!! 😂😎
This finale was a result of the one constant in Doctor Who, the fandom complains about present Doctor Who, the series 5 finale was complained about for being too complicated along with the things leading up to the mid series break of 6x07 "A Good Man Goes to War."
So this finale was made simpler to digest, it was also complained about during its time.
Doctor Who fans:
Complain about the present of the show
Extol the virtues of the past of the show
Worry about the future of the show
It seems to be our Rule #1
