'Planet of the Daleks' is a good example of a Jon Pertwee story restored by a mixture of technology and love. The BBC's Restoration Team, which has helped to recover the original viewing experience of many classic British TV shows (the likes of Morecambe & Wise and Dad's Army have also benefitted) became heroes of a kind in maximizing the authentic look and feel of the stories - often exceeding the quality of the original as broadcast. In this instance, a process was developed that could look at black & white film copies of an episode and 'read' the tiny 'Chroma-Dots' imprinted in the footage (leftover in fact from the colour video footage from which the monochrome film copies were struck). By extrapolating from these dots it was possible to recreate a fairly accurate representation of the original colours without extensive recreations. And this is certainly an adventure that benefits from being seen in its original glory.
Every time I see the name of this story I imagine it in Missy's voice from The Magician's Apprentice. 'This is the planet of the Daleks.' The phrase always gives me the same delicious frisson of horror I get from that moment.
When I was a kid in the 80's, my local PBS station in Chicago aired this story. But ,as it's been mentioned, episode 3 was in black and white so they didn't bother showing that episode. So what I got was, the Daleks destroy the ship in episode 2, shoot the Doctor. They we got the cliffhanger where Rebek says there's 10,000 daleks on the planet. The very next scene was the Doctor and the Thals walking and running into Jo. It wasn't until years later when the VHS came out that I finally got to see episode 3.
@@josefschiltz2192 Yeah especially for Chicago's PBS station. Back in the 80's Chicago was like the epicenter of Doctor Who in America. Terry Nation's Greatest Hits it may be (the boulder hurled down a shaft to destroy a rising Dalek is a direct lift from his very first Dalek serial), but this story knows how to stitch together ongoing peril in the classic style. Which is probably what the show was crying out for at this stage. The era of post-1960's experimentation, whether it be with visuals and sound, or just the conceptual basis of the Daleks, is moving into nostalgia. Little did they know we'd still be viewing it on that basis again nearly 50 more years down the line!
Writer Terry Nation created the Daleks. In the late 60s during the 2nd Doctor era he tried to launch his own series of The Daleks. No one picked it up. But he owned the rights to the Daleks and whenever any Doctor faced the Daleks Terry Nation had to be involved with the script as well as getting paid. Even after his death in 1997 his estate owned the rights. Some times even he agreed that he "phoned it in" on some of the scripts, didn't really bother to make it any good. Fortunately this story is one of the last Dalek stories he done well before slacking off until Genesis of the Daleks.
