    It's worth noting that none of the tattoos in this video were done by me. I don't have many photos of tattoos I've done that do a good job of showing what a blowout is so I just pulled some off of Google

      @@Jhazahra I would like to know about that as well, tattoos to cover up scars. I've always been told that you can't tattoo over a scar. But in recent years I've heard that you can. Jafriqah I know your comment is a couple months old lol but I got self harm scars covered in November, maybe this helps: I researched a lot beforehand. In the end I went with an abstract black and watercolour design and it’s beautiful 😊. Scars should be fully healed, ideally a couple years old. Scars might blur more easily, so stay away from fine lines & go with bolder designs. Seek a artist that ideally is experienced in tattooing scars, or at least cover ups. Don’t be to strict with your design, your artist (should) knows how to work with or around bumps, discolouring of skin, adapts design according to texture. Best case scenario, your scars add depth or humour to the tattoo. Hope this helps ☺️

    I would appriciate a video on the ... let's call it psychological aspects of being a tattoo artist. E.g. how do you deal with the emotional impact of a client having a piece with a deep emotional meaning done (like death of a loved one etc.). And how do you (as the tattooer) deal with the fact that you are causing your clients substancial pain while you do your job.
    All the best from Germany!

    James I want to see a video on what type of obligations a tattoo artist has after a deal is struck/agreed on as far as holding up there side of the deal so deposit is paid appointments are kept and artist has started with first needle poke? Should it come out the same?should it be as black as promised? Should it not be hazzy? Should their lines be clean? Spaces be even? No mistakes in the tattoo ECT.... All things leading up to the quality of what was talked about and them not milking the clock for biting off more then they can chew/ or past they're skill level? And what if it's not Turing out how the tattoo should? At what point should you say look it's not Turing out? Should you let the artist keep running with it trying to make it better? And why should the client pay for more if the artist can't deliver what was agreed or promised? Why should a client be at mercy for a artist to run up a clock because they don't have the skill set they say they do? At what point should you back out? Ask for a refund? Let the artist know your not happy? Not have to pay more for no delivery? And shouldn't the artist be confident in the hours quoted? Or price quoted? The client isn't the professional here what steps should they take after the job is started?

    I wasn't the smartest. I was at a tattoo convention, waiting for my artist to show (had booked him weeks in advance) and I was talking to another studio at the con. They could see I was thinking about getting some flash while waiting and talked me into getting some, one from each of them. These two guys were really nice and excited when I showed them what I wanted, and I sat down and let them tattoo my hands. Nothing huge, a triskelion and a hexagram on each of my hands. The triskelion turned out so fucking good, no raised lines, no blowout, healed perfectly. The hexagram on the other hand...it has blurry ass lines, some places where the shading didn't even take, lines missing in places and raised bumps in corners. I am so sad because I love the motive and placement and it's supposed to be part of a matching set so I don't just wanna cover it up. Do my warning is, don't get talked into flash if you're uncertain and just because one artist at a place is great doesn't mean all of them are.

      you can do it gently without harming the tattoo to stop the itch.. it's just the hard slaps that are going to fuck it up. i would use caution in areas that are prone to blowouts though, like inner bicep, collar bone, inner thighs, etc.

      one thing i didn't mention in the video is that smaller needle groupings, like 3 liners and single needles, tend to blow out more easily than big groupings. it's because the pressure from the needle is more focused on the smaller ones. so yeah, you gotta run them way softer and faster

    I have a few blowouts, both happened with artists who were very experienced and they had done other work on me that there was no problem with. It's just a little haziness along a line, mostly I think I would be the only one who really noticed them. I am working on an American Traditional bodysuit. I guess that I just have accept that some blowouts will occur, however as I cover more and more skin, I think they will simply get lost and not be as noticeable as if I had just a few.

    • @JamesWithee
      @JamesWithee  5 років тому

      yeah the ditch get's blowouts super easily. in my experience though, old school tattooers get blowouts more than the newer generation of artists. they tend to emphasize speed more because banging out flash all day every day was the standard OP back in the day. so a lot of them are just trying to get it done as fast as possible to give the client more value and get another person in the chair. if one is prioritizing the quality of the art above all else this method can be undesirable though. it all depends on what's important to you as the client

    I think your right about the liners, but part of the reason shading doesn't seem to cause blowouts is that the surface area of the needles is spread out on a mag. It's like a bed of nails, because they are spread out they just don't penetrate as far as easily. So it's way harder to accidentally go too deep.

      Liar, If you knew them in german you would know the in English. Epidermis is epidermis in both languages. Though sometimes in german its called the oberhaut but epidermis is more common. Dermis is the same in both languages. The sub-cutaneous is called subcutis while not exact is pretty damn close to english.

    I'm super late to this video, but my most recent tattoo at the very end of the session one specific part hurt so bad, (its blackwork/geometric) I have a really high pain tolerance, none of my tattoos have ever hurt. I'm the kind of client that will literally be falling asleep during so I was confused why it hurt so much and felt so deep.., turns out a week or 2 later i noticed it blew out in that exact spot a lot. Sigh.

My inner forearms never had problems with anything, however I had to go back every time to retouch my sleeve and arms tattoos because the ink would come out. i don't have a definite answer to that question, but i know exactly what you're talking about. some of mine do that too. it seems to be in the areas that are more heavily saturated. maybe it's the body periodically reattempting to get rid of the ink particles but failing over and over. i don't think that it's an allergic reaction to the ink, because all my tattoos are black (carbon based) and some inks used on me are made with just carbon and water.

    Blow outs happen with most artist time to time during the beginning of careers and I agree light handed artist is the way to get tattoo cause if it's to light and falls out you can always add more ink and touch up but try touching up blowouts it's crazy 🤪

  • @louiejones4092

    just wondering have you ever done a video on ink rejection? and how some skin doesn't accept the ink very well. I had one of my chest pieces heal really bad and it was almost immediate are my tattoo artists finished the piece the tattoo just started pushing this clear liquid from the whole tattoo. it scabed and scared really bad took a look lil over a month to heal. I will say my artist made up for it and fixed it and gave me some free work as well.

    • @JamesWithee
      @JamesWithee  5 років тому +1

      personally i haven't ever run into a case where the ink totally "rejected" and just wouldn't take in someone's skin. it's happened to a very small degree before, but it was because the client was on blood thinners. the tattoo still healed up pretty nicely. this might be fucked up to say, but in 95% of cases when a tattoo artist says that the ink is rejecting and is blaming it on your skin, it's because he/she isn't applying it correctly and is making excuses to save face. i'm not saying that it legitimately doesn't happen.. just most of the time it's a bullshit excuse lol

    • @louiejones4092
      @louiejones4092 5 років тому

      James Withee my artist never blamed it on my skin at I even went to a few other reputable tattoo shops and asked why this happened and everyone was mind blown as to why it happened to and when I told who does my tattoos they were even more surprised because he has a reputation of being one of the best artist in my state. it's been years sense that has happened but time to time well talk about why I heal like that.

    • @JamesWithee

    I only have one blown out tattoo. I've had a bunch of tattoos done by one artist and only one has a blowout. It's on the inside of my arm and it's very faint. I did get another tattoo in the area where the blowout is most visible. It doesn't cover it completely but it sort of obscures it. The funny thing is that the tattoo itself looks perfect, and the blowout is very large but very faint. I'm also veeeeeeery fair. I think that if I had any other skin tone you wouldn't even be able to see it. It did bother me though. It really did look like a big bruise. I still see it in certain light but everyone else seems to just think it's part of the 2nd tattoo, so it doesn't bother me so much anymore. I'm still going to continue getting tattooed by that artist. Every other tattoo he's given me is perfect, so I'm not about to get mad about an accident like that. I recognize that I'm extremely fair and the skin under there is pretty thin and sensitive. Plus it's a fatty area for me, which I hadn't even considered might be a factor.
    This is probably the best video explaining blowouts that I've seen to date. You're a rock star my man.

    • @JamesWithee
      @JamesWithee  5 років тому

      thanks! that's one thing i forgot to mention. extremely pale skin is way more prone to blowouts, if only because it's more visible on that skin type. it's a double edge sword.. that skin type also allows for the highest level of contrast in tattooing, which is great

    2 things, number one I saw it suggested by someone else and I liked the idea about you including a tattoo/tattoos of the day in your videos. It could be pieces that you've done, other artists, or maybe your viewers sending them in. Number two I was wondering why tattoo artist never/rarely put their initials on their pieces? I mean I get it if someone wants a tattoo that says mom with a heart around it they don't want some random dudes initials there but serious tattoo artists probably tattoo pretty elaborate pieces frequently and it makes sense to put your signature on it. Also as weird as it sounds now, I think if it was common it would not be considered so. I mean someone can paint someone a portrait of their loved one or whatever and put their initials on it without it being weird, just a matter of what the norm is I think.

    • @cdisturbed
      @cdisturbed 5 років тому +1

      As an artist, I like the initial idea a lot. & That's coming from someone who has full sleeves & work in progress leg sleeve tattoos all of which were designed by myself. I still wouldnt mind the tattooer initialing my tattoo. Even if I drew it, they perfected the composition, gave final stage input & actually tattooed it. But especially for a custom piece. I wonder what that might mean for a tattooer who copies another artists work or "Pinterest" tattoos. Should they also initial even if not the original artist??? Food for thought.

    • @JamesWithee
      @JamesWithee  5 років тому +3

      i'm probably going to start vlogging tattoo sessions soon, so the tattoo of the day thing would conflict with that because i'll already be featuring my favorite tattoo art frequently. featuring other's tattoo art isn't really something i'm interested in either, because it might appear that i'm just trying to use other's creative works to further my own channel like a lot of these random tattoo pages on ig do. as for the signature, i've had clients ask me to do it, but i never wanted to because it just feels weird. if it's an illustrative piece that i drew from scratch i think it would be more appropriate, but a lot of tattoos that we do as tattoo artists are realistic ones that utilize photographic references that aren't our original content. it's kind of a grey area where it's taken from a copyrighted photograph but heavily modified to make into a cool tattoo, so signing it seems to claim totally creative originality when often times it isn't

    • @TheGuideOfDota
      @TheGuideOfDota 5 років тому +1

      @@JamesWithee ok cool looking forward to that, but for myself, I research an artist a lot before getting a piece and the artists themselves is a part of the tattoo so I think signature would just add value to it
