This man is on here trying to give really useful information and of course a bunch of ass holes with nothing to offer are trying to pick it apart and start something, while having nothing to contribute themselves and by the way Africans don't see themselves as just African, each African I know can tell you exactly which ethnic group they belong to and the language / dialect, and belief that make them different from the other group around them and they can spot the members of the other groups just by their facial features. Sri Lankan are some of the blackest people on the planet and their Indians. So when people have nothing positive to contribute they need to learn just to STFU.
Saif Fox as a new tattoo artist I wanted to find out more information and there weren’t that many videos. I need to know in order to talk about it with the clients that walk into the shop. Thanks for the video.
Meanwhile everyone watching is commenting about race and saying "thank you" but how many of you came for the content. What did you learn from this video (besides he is not a racist)? Exactly. It pains me to see yall here worried about him and what he thinks over what he does for a profession. Sad. Forever slaves.
Guess you would have to if you’re a tattoo artist. My undertone is olive and it’s hard to get a good match for foundations. Apparently makeup companies don’t know that fair olive tones exist. So tattooing me must present its own challenges cause my undertone is weird
I'm just learning about this skin type and tattoo's he cleared up alot I was scared to ask because last thing I want to do is piss someone off!! Nazia 😝
Lol anyone who has learned color theory, color charts etc. knows undertones. It’s not limited to black skin only🙄 Working with skin, this is also part of the basics. I should know. I’m brown, a MUA and a hairdresser... hair, skin care, styling, tattooing. All professions where one needs knowledge of color.
Why are people acting like black people are super sensitive? If you say something racist, then you’ll get called out. It’s that simple. This video was extremely informative and MUCH needed. The only people making this a racial thing are the people pretentiously claiming he doesn’t need to worry about people calling him racist. Only be worried if you say something racist. It’s not rocket science. Thank you for this video!!! I can’t tell you enough how important this was, at least for me! Every time I mention this to a tattoo artist they get offended as if I’m claiming they aren’t talented enough to tattoo on dark skin when I’m only saying I want to avoid certain colors to ensure it shows up nicely on my skin. Again, HUGE THANK YOU!
As a black person myself, I can tell you that many black people blow things out of proportion. Some Examples, Karrueche got a lot of hate for dressing up as Princess Tiana and a white person on Insta said a hair product wouldn't work for most black people because we tend to have more kinky hair and people started calling her racist.
Pink if people’s biggest fear is someone having something to say then people need to keep their thoughts to themselves. In the age of social media anyone can claim themselves to be of a particular ethnic group and speak on behalf of a whole race. If you know you’re not being racist or coming from a malicious stand point then you should be prepared for whatever backlash comes your way and defend your position accordingly as the gentleman in the video did. But to apologize preemptively for a whole community of people who have not done anything to him is ridiculous. Black people don’t need to go on apology tours to protect ppl’s feelings about racism. This comment feed blew things out of proportion given that no backlash has even taken place. He provided great information and this sideshow apology tour ended up being quite distracting and not so productive. I hope he continues to make more videos informing tattoo artists how to perform better tattoos on people of color moving forward because this is a growing issue.
americanprincess12 I don’t need that explanation. I know why he made the video and never questioned it. His video is educating both consumers and the tattoo artists. This is a real issue and I’m beyond grateful for him doing this. What I don’t get is people preemptively making it about race when he made a mere mention about being apprehensive but overcame that because he recognizes the importance of the information over his hesitation. The comments in the feed have been ridiculous
I am extremely impressed with the depth to which you discussed this topic. How you articulated the information had no racist implications, it was just fact. And I not only appreciate that, but I also wish that other people relayed information in the same way that you do. You've earned another subscriber.
Not offensive at all.. u did great! I am dark skinned (around a #9) and have 6 tattoos.. looking to get another one. Yes, I am disappointed that certain colors don't show up on my skin, but hey.. it is what it is. I am a proud black woman & love the skin I'm in. Big applause for how u broke it down. You were professional, articulate & never came across as racist at all. Peace & respect to u sir.. u do great work and give great advice! ✌
Stop stealing white culture. Europeans have been getting tattoos for thousands of years so it's a part of our culture. Ötzi the Iceman is over 5000 years old and he had over 20 tattoos. It's white culture, and stealing it is wrong. Just kidding about stealing our culture. Sharing culture is what humans do
I like this comment.Thas what i was saying let ppl buy what they want. They understand, but dont wanna.me left behind. We may not see whats on their tattoos but theyre happy. And the guy that made this video is cool too.
"Inclusive"? Damn people are petty. Proficient at getting offended as well. Dark skin is actually more of an accurate term than "darker" skin, white people can have "darker" skin than other white people and yet that "darker" white person still doesn’t have the DARK SKIN that were talking about.
Im not sure how you ended up on my recommendations but I’m glad you did. This video needs to go viral! You’re the ONLY person that broke this down perfectly! The way you articulated this video leaves me speechless. Thank you so much.
sᴀᴠᴠɪsʜ ʟʏғᴇ I totally concur. Dude is straight up the bomb. Very well articulated, professional. Totally well versed and truly did the research to speak on the topic. Kudos to you bro.
I went to a tattoo parlor and specifically asked if any of the artists had examples of tattoos on dark skin. The lady told me that doesn’t really matter. I left for sure. Common sense tells you the canvas aka the skin matters.
@@gerardkingdev that’s not true.. a good artist doesn’t mean anything. You want someone beyond just “good” you want someone knowledgeable. She didn’t miss out at all.
@@gerardkingdev being a good artist doesn’t mean that you know how to do everything. And as he showed in the video, he did a tattoo on someone without realizing the colors would get muddy and fade. He showed us an example and he’s a great artist. I swear people don’t pay attention to anything 😒
@@gerardkingdev No. I'm an artist, and I'm good at acrylic painting. Recently I've been dipping my toes into ink, as in trying out that medium. That is not the same! Just because I'm a good artist doesn't mean I'm good at everything.
I tattoo darker skin all the time, I don’t get a lot of photos because when darker skin is swollen after the process it catches light really bad, and I’m not a photographer , but I do still attempt when the tattoo is cool, so about a quarter of the photos I take are useable which means, not a lot of dark skin in my portfolio……. And it does matter to have SOME examples, because I’ve seen ppl tattoo the same way they would light skin, the approach is just slightly different, bigger, bold, larger skin breaks to open the tattoo up so that it’s all readable and can be seen well, leave out the small details
Someone who is literally dark skin from East Africa, I wasn’t offended at all so I don’t want to hear any negative comments. Very educational, and well spoken. Big ups
Takyra Thomas I get offended easily when it comes to ignorant people, speaking on other ethnicities in a hateful way.. but I did not get that feeling from him at all. He’s obviously trying to help out anyone who has questions about the topic. (Which was clearly stated by him at the beginning of the video)
AmberTRESSO I’m not disagreeing with you and I wasn’t talking to you. I’m just stating that what won’t offend you may offend others (to the original commentor). I don’t care what feelings you don’t get from him bc I never spoke about that.
It sucks that some people don’t feel comfortable sharing knowledge on the differences between POC and fair skin, because this information is important for darker people getting tattooed and tattoo artists doing the work.
@@debbiedelgado2877 just proves people don’t know what the real definition of racist/racism is..lol how could it be racist to talk about the facts I Fw this dude for helping me find this info
Yea a white person could have “darker skin” for a white person, I need to hear about black people skin, it’d be nice to know what kind of colors I can get
@@debbiedelgado2877 why would he possibly think this info is racist? dark skin has obvious differences in colour and texture when compared to light skin. and that will obviously affect tattooing, so it should be known. thinking that acknowledging that difference is ‘bad’ is where the racism is. difference isn’t bad.
@@carlamarie72able I actually have a few and 2 of them have color. I did place them on the inner parts of my body like he mentioned so you can still see the blue. I'm a 7 on that scale and definitely want more. Pick a small one you like and go for it, they can be addicting 😊
That's actually an excellent idea! (Bringing this to tattoo shop)Not only is this guy smart and talented...he is humble. 🧡 He could have "sold" this valuable info. to artists and clients. So refreshing.
Only an idiot would consider this racist. This is a concern for people with dark skin. Generally the beautiful colors are on white people or lighter skin people , I appreciate you taking the time to leave this video. These are legitimate answers to legitimate questions and concerns.
Black Smith ikr some people make up shit in their mind and then wonder why @ sixty they'll be screaming at the imaginary kids in their yard. smh Don't be this guy.
As a black man I love the fact that you went out on a limb and made this video. Talking about skin color when it comes to tattoos is no different that putting a outfit together. All colors have their own challenges and advantages. Keep your channel growing bro SALUTE!!
People act like pointing out the factual differences between us is a bad thing. We are not all the same & that's ok. I've gone into shops & literally had to walk out because they're bullshitting me about what will realistically work on me or just have very little experience with black clients. I appreciate your honesty.
Nah, it's because a lot of white people are protective of our culture (tattoos in Europe have been around for thousands of years, even the 5000 year old European mummy Ötzi the Iceman had over 20 tattoos) and a lot of them don't want black people stealing our culture. Which is dumb in the US, since black people in the US are around 33% white anyway so it's as much of their culture as it is any pure Europeans.
@@stanlee7958 I feel like you're making a huge blanket statement that has something to do with your own views. It has nothing to do with people stealing European culture because I can bet you 90 percent of white people don't even know what you're talking about. If you just want to say you think people are stealing "white culture" by getting tattos then say that because you've replied to multiple people's comments passively saying the same thing.
@@stanlee7958 umm, every culture has forms of tattoos. White people didn't invent tattoos. They've been around way longer than 5000 years and before even white/pale skinned people existed. But I agree SassShea, we should stop acting like we don't have differences.
@@Lil_refresha African culture had scarification. That isnt the same as tattoos. The oldest know tattoos are on Ötzi the Iceman. A white European who is over 5000 years old. From what any anthropologist can tell white people are the first with tattoos, and have been getting them for thousands of years. @Taj Tucker 90% of white people can't tell you how Halloween started, that doesnt mean Halloween isn't a part of white culture.
Just because it's the oldest found doesn't mean that there weren't more before them and that they invented tattoos. There are plenty of cultures that have long histories of tattoos but those people could have lived in places that don't preserve human remains, and more specifically skin well, or people could have cremated bodies which would lead to a lack of evidence concerning tattoos. My point is that just because archeologist found the oldest known tattoo on a white person doesn't mean they invented it. Like I said before there's evidence like art and tools to suggest that tattooing took place in a variety of places, on a variety skintones, in a variety of cultures thousands of years before that Iceman was dated. So it's unlikely that his people invented it. No archeologist would ever assume that the remains of one person they just found meant they were the beginning of a specific human behaviour/art form. That makes no sense.
THIS is WHY I have NOT gotten a tatoo. I applaud you for taking the risk to inform educate and empower. This was VERY crucial for MANY people out there. NOTHING but #FACTS. As a cosmetologist I totally agree and can confirm that the color wheel is your BEST friend. Just like hair has different tones and textures and those textures and tones change based upon the color deposited or withdrawn from its natural base. Same with make-up. RiRi understands the levels of brown and BLACK beauty unlike many of her peers in the same field. I would appreciate someone who knows about my skin and at least make me aware. Some cosmetologist can refuse services because we know the risks of some procedures especially with chemicals. It your duty and responsibility as a professional and artist to be as considerate and compassionate about your clients!!! Thats what a lot of businesses miss out on. The relationship and integrity amongst client and service provider. If anybody BLACK is upset about THIS then they choose to STAY ignorant. Keep educating BLACKS and POC and as a POC yourself its a good look and honor to promote preventative measures for other POC. God bless YOU
Excellent video. Thank you for respecting dark skinned people as well as your craft enough to provide this type of information. Anyone who has a problem with your video, has personal issues within themselves that they need to deal with. We can't pretend that we are not all made differently. THAT's disrespectful. This video respects our differences by providing knowledgeable information for the best outcome! Kudos!
I don’t know why but this video made me feel happy 😂 like I don’t have tattoos, but I appreciate the art behind it! And you doing this video to help someone who wants to get a tattoo that’s Black African/Caribbean/African American etc can learn before getting their skin botched! Great Job!
As a black person I appreciate this video especially from a tattoo artist. I’m considering getting my first tattoo, but I can’t really find that many videos that are specific to tattooing dark skin. Your videos have helped educate me more. Thank you!
You know why I love this video? For YEARS I have been watching Ink Master and cringing every time someone gets a dark-skinned skull pick. These people moan and groan and carry on like it's the worst thing in the world that could ever have happened to them -- even black tattoo artists behave this way! But you spoke factually and you were CLEARLY coming from a place of fundamental respect and caring for black people. This was insanely refreshing. Holy shit who knew a tattoo artist could have this kind of mature and respectful approach?
Same for me. I would watch ink master and cringe when artists would complain about tattooing a dark skinned person. I would be like, "you're competing to be an INK MASTER and you say that you would have trouble with darker skin?" *ed lover voice* c'mon son!
Coach B why black people so willing to invite EVERYBODY to the cook out I'll never understand! Have history not taught u anything??? I bet the native Americans wish they never had invited the pilgrims to their "cookout" now look at 'em land stolen, damn near extinct & living on reservations! Funny how other races wouldn't invite YOU to their cookout! 'ol extra friendly stupid ass!
I’m a tattoo apprentice and this helps a lot because I want to try to learn more and be inclusive but when I say I couldn’t hardly find any information, I literally could not find any concise information. This is super helpful.
I haven't finished the video but I really appreciate this! I love tattoos & I sadly don't think I'll get one, but I've never seen someone give advice on this. They always say "tattoos don't look good on dark skin" without having a proper discussion.
I'm Black American with darker skin and to you I say, FINALLY and THANK YOU! I have been wondering about this but as you said there seems to be lack of information because of it being a sensitive topic. I appreciate you being brave and informing us on what to consider and look out for. I was not offended at all and I finished the video more educated than I was before.
Exactly I don't understand why people would say this is racist at all it's not he's a tattoo artist so he knows what he's talking about he's trying to help people get a better tattoo you good for him
Sure, his regions were a little off, but his heart was in the right place and the INFORMATION was helpful and explained transparently and respectfully. I also enjoyed that he provided options. He is talking about how different skin types/canvases require different APPROACHES for a tattoo artist that is professional and gives a damn about what they do. Thank you for taking the time to put this together.
This is factual if you've learned any African history vs. say Pacific Islands. African tribes did a lot of branding and cutting that created keloids to make them three dimensional which made the permanent marking more visible paint was used more for ceremonial purposes as opposed to Pacific Islands who did intricate tattooing on their bodies. It's refreshing to watch an honest video. Great work
African Histories. It is scarification not branding, most of them are of a ceremonial, spiritual or historical meaning from simple representation of daily life/Animals to complex ideograms representing events related to one Genealogical/Cultural/personal History. Not All African Cultures do scarifications. I'll give you an example from the area I come from, West & Central Africa. In my dad culture, scarification on New Born children was a regular occurence for protection vs bad spirits, there were placed in different spots based on gender and social status. My mother side does not have tatoos per say but there are body modifications with tatoos, but only for highly initiated people. Within the same region throughout the same country even, say Nigeria, Igbo (used to) have Uli which is permanent to semi permanent drawings on their bodies only made by women. Signifier of many a thing ,on the other hand Fulani one of the largest nomadic culture in the world, has both scarifications and sort of henna like tatoo with way longer hold on the skin that can be made permanent. And it changes from area to another. It is way more diverse and intricated that the information out there.
As black woman with tattoos I really love you for this! I also wish I had seen this before my yellow undertoned self got a purple koi fish. I really appreciate you taking the risk to put this information out there. When I was looking as of April 2018 there was nothing as informative or comprehensive.
@@MidasLockhart instagram.com/p/BhXyQFGls7JQ9TifxZoizWCJR8b2TlmTjw0EGs0/?igshid=12m9cpf669iqd That may work. My settings may be too private and Im not able to attach it here. The pic is of it fresh. It still looks good but the purple and small scales were probably not my ideal choices.

I’m a black girl with medium brown skin and I’m about to get my first tattoo very soon. I considered much of this, but never anything about how my skin tone would neutralize certain colors. Thank you for this unbiased professional information.
A tattoo artist that actually cares on what a tattoo looks like on someone and not just saying “oh yea it’ll look good” just to get paid. This is very professional, informative and refreshing to see.
This video just earned you a sub bro. Much love from a black man who loves tatts and appreciates an artist who cares to learn his craft fully and not just cater to one group of people. If im ever in your area I'll save a piece of skin for you to put some ink on
I love your advice videos. You are the reason why I chose the tattoo artist I did to do my coverup on my back. It’s a very large coverup(the top of my shoulder blades down to my butt). I researched for almost 2years and even had a few friends that he worked with. He’s here in Vegas and was on ink master season 1. @tonechingontattooer is my artist and my IG is @raewills if you’re curious
This video is dope. There’s not much expert tattoo info online. You sir, have made yourself a worldwide expert! #kudos on your communication skills. I love smart people that love what they do! 💯💞
I'm definitely a 10 with a purple undertone, so I feel especially fucked when I think about getting tattoos. I am also 100% east African, so this video actually helped me a lot. I don't think tats are for me anymore. Thank you ♡
I’m currently thinking about getting a tattoo and I was discouraged because I couldn’t find any information on tattooing my skin color. This video made me feel so much better, thank you!
I have no interest in getting a tattoo and I'm not sure why youtube recommended this. But, James! Bruh! This was informative as hell. I'm not getting a tattoo but my nephew is interested in getting one and I'm going to make him and his mom watch this before she lets him pick something out. Fantastic job!
regkarn1 OMG, same here. Not sure how I got here, not interested in a tattoo but I watch the entire video...lol. My son has two tattoos but he's a lighter complexion, so it shows well. However this was interesting.
I've been searching YEARS for advice like this. Like you said, people are afraid to talk about it. It's not racist unless you're demeaning or using the differences in our skin to assert power. Black skin is different...and that's ok. BTW do you have any Detroit tat artists to recommend?
Right. Everything is called racist nowadays as soon as someone refers to skin color🙄. Giving information about the difference is skin color is not racist!!
Thank you. As a black guy looking for his first tattoo, you've been very informative. People are super sensitive these days and it's a little ridiculous, but you're coming from a good place. Regards.
I’m surprised there are people out here that would actually get offended by this. You would think that information like this is common sense. But unfortunately, some people are just ignorant. I also agree with getting an artist that has experience with Black skin. I think of tattoos the same way I think of hair. Different ethnicities have different hair textures and different ways to get their hair done/haircuts.
The Awasa my thoughts exactly. I'm not interested in getting a tattoo however I appreciate the information as well as the way it was presented. Fabulous!
How can they be “Ink masters” an they don’t do dark skin tats ,”referring to the tv show”,..... thank u sir the industry needs people to speak up.......my skin is diff which call’s for diff techniques 🤷🏾♂️
Yea and they complain whenever they get someone with dark skin it's kinda funny because being "masters" they should know what to do. And most of the people they get arent even that dark
Weird how this video came up as a suggested one. I don't have tattoos nor am I interested but this is something I will share the heck out of since many younger folks seem to be getting tats more! Thanks for being honest and fearless broaching this topic.
I can’t stand I don’t see color crap. Not everyone is the same some ppl need different things . Thank you so much for this video . I think I just stay tattoo free
As a dark-skinned woman, I want to thank you for your candidness and educational information. I think racism is based on the delivery and your delivery was very neutral and professional.
How would anyone would think explaining this is racist is beyond me. There’s a science to tattooing and he’s just explaining the challenges of getting a tattoo if you have dark skin
When I got my tattoo I was originally going to get a very colorful one,the artist explained similar information to what you said in this very detailed video. She redrew a tattoo similar to what I wanted without color. It made me feel comfortable with her and I am currently looking into getting another tattoo with her.Being open to your clients will get you more clients .
I'm about the same skin tone as you with a lot of colorful tattoos! I get the "I thought I couldn't get colorful tattoos" from other black people and I'm like "well here I am so yes you can!" Red, purple, green, light to mid-tone blues (may come out a little greenish depending on the color). I even have orange and yellow (golden yellow, not bright) It's definitely possible! Then again, I prefer traditional tattoos and less realism, so that could matter!
It’s clear to me you’re comfortable talking about this most likely because you fellowship with the people you’re talking about. You have a very nice level of sensitivity in your delivery which is appreciated. But there are many non black tattoo artists who don’t possess this same delivery method when talking about tattooing black skin. Keep that in mind.
Bruhh finally someone with balls enough to give a good and articulated explanation about tattoos on black people, even some black tattoos artists be afraid to speak up on the topic its cringe at times to see tattoos artists struggling to give advice on tattoos on black people,so great fucking job!👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿
You're gonna get A LOT of new clients now! Great vid. Wish we could post pics in the comments. I'd like to show u my tattoo on my light brownish/yellow skin. A pin-up space girl by Jime Litwalk.
Thank you for this video. I had a tattooist who worked with Darker skin and I wanted to get some roses. He suggested that I mix the red with black to help it hold up over time, especially since it’s in an area that gets a lot of sun. 4 years later, my tattoo still looks good. Now when I get tattoos, I just ask if the tattooist is comfortable working with dark skin and do they have experience.
Man thanx for this video. I'm a blac tat artist and most my clients r blac. I tell them I prefer to only do black n grey shade but if u insist on color ur wish is my command... Ima have all my clients who want color watch this video.
PERFECT!! I am a tattoo artist here in Birmingham Alabama. Over my years I’ve tattooed tons of darker skin people. Everything you are saying is correct. Also appreciate the way you said it and scientific way of breaking it down into facts and explaining everything in detail.
I found this video very informative! I'm so glad I came across it. I have 3 tattoos, all of which are flowers. I believe my skin tone falls in the 6 and 7 category. He was spot on when he mentioned the lighter colors blotching up on my skin type because that happened to me. Thankfully, I live in Georgia. A year after I received that tattoo, an artist was able to fix the blotches with a reddish-pink tone color that turned out looking really good. I plan on getting more flower tats because I'm a flower child, so I will keep everything he said in mind when it comes to choosing colors. Thank you for making this video, James. Now I'm going to share it with my friends.
My second tattoo artist (a friend of a friend) decided to tell me he was colour blind AFTER doing a smallish tattoo on me. I should have rocked his jaw for that tbh.
You definitely kick the real my dude. Surprising how many don’t know about the scarring. I’m black, probably a 6 to 6.5 on your scale. Both arms half sleeved, Japanese yakuza style. Bits of red here and there. I got lucky with a very experienced artist that wasn’t scared to tell me straight. Personal opinion, stay with the black and gray my brothers and sisters! And do your homework! This is forever. Great vid man, much love from LA 👊🏾
Hey man! You are awesome! Your communication skills are on 10! You need to TEACH ! Your delivery was so informative and genuine! No racism detected at ALL! Your work is beasting !
Whatever your nationality is thank you for this informative video. Btw you are so attractive. I wish the makeup companies would do this type of research. I've never had a tattoo but I would definitely come find you for one. I'm on the three Spectrum what cool tones.
This was VERY informative. I'm an artist (with a skin tone between 6-7) & have been considering getting a full color tattoo for a while now. I had no idea the melanin in your skin replenishes itself if areas of the skin are lightened due to tattoo ink. That's just a great thing to know about skin, period. Awesome vid.
cdubbart this happened to me on white parts of my tattoo, and i’m lightskinned. it happens in the summer mostly; it turns orange, not even a nice tan color. in the winter, it turns an awful brown color. it’s tragic. i’ll be getting it covered eventually.
Facts. I've just found black tattoos look better on me and my color ones have faded oppose to my black.I wish i knew this back when i first started getting tatts.Because honestly color does not always take well to our skin due to our deep melanin. Just think,no matter how much milk you add to coffee, its still going to have the brown hue.
Deeply appreciative that about you having actually made this video. Finding info on darker skink tattoos is always a chore and feels really down putting. You put the limitations in a light that wasn't offensive or discriminating but just honest. Considering that I want bomb ass tattoos I am all about the honesty lol. Thanks!
People: “you should discuss undertones of the skin colors!” Guy on video: literally already did that in the video People: “you should include photos of dark skin that you’ve tattooed!” Guy on video: literally already did that in the video People: “include a chart that includes different skin tones you refer to!” Guy in video: literally already did that in the video Moral of the story: if you’re going to complain, at least make sure you’ve watch through the entire video before you start critiquing the presentation.
I think they meant photos of the skin tone this whole video was about. I watched the whole video and the pictures he showed was not of those darker tones. Still a very informative video though.
He did show a chart and that was helpful but the pictures he showed were of lighter toned, it would have been nice to see pictures of all the skin tones. All in all it was informative and delivered professionally, can’t ask for more.
The guy with the skull and rose his arm is my coworker xavier price. He’s probably a 7 on the scale even though it looks lighter in the pic. He’s pretty dark. He is also in the pic with the hand tattoo of a triangle and eye mashup. Look him up on ig @xavierpriceart to verify. I know this comment is late, but I appreciate your support. He’s the darkest person I could reference cuz it’s hard to photograph tattoos on skin darker than his. I mentioned that in the video too
The silent majority don't make the subject of being black into a taboo and so we definitely appreciate it when people are frank with us and actually give us valuable information. Not to mention, you just offered everyone free information, you're awesome.
i’d also say if you’re darker skin tone do not get tattoos in the summer, it will be harder to tattoo the base layer, wait till the winter if you can when you’re less exposed to sun, i get 2-3 shades darker during summer because i’m always outside
I'm black and I appreciate him showing the other tones. I have a reddish brown tint...so when showing both graphs was pretty awesome. He does a great job explaining. I haven't read any comments....just know he put his neck out on the line to give this info....so show appreciation.
You have to research artist that "specialize" in dark skin. There's a PHENOMENAL artist here in Atlanta that makes colors pop and so vivid on dark skin it's crazy! This is AFTER the tattoo has healed too. He is doing my sleeve this winter (although he doesnt know it yet) his name is MIYA BAILEY. Edit: Got my sleeve and its BETTER than I could've ever imagined. I ALWAYS get compliments. Leg sleeve coming soon. 😎
I love this! People are so ignorant and sensitive pretending that there isn't a difference between skin tones and races. We're all EQUAL but we're NOT all the SAME. Those people talking about "not seeing color" that's why we have no range in makeup and you look like a clown.
AMAAAAZING NEW INTRO! Very informative video. People have to understand how pigments work on dark skin so that tattoos can be done properly. It’s not racism, it’s science. Even then, there’s not a lot of tattoos on dark skin online, unfortunately, so people can’t really get realistic inspiration. Great as always 👍🏻
Mannnnn... Look. A ton of people have already said this but thank you! Thank you for making this video. Thank you for speaking frankly and not being all nervous about giving us the information we need. Thank you for obviously being an ally. Thank you for doing the work it took to put all the info together; I know it wasn't easy. You're the man. I hope your business skyrocketed after this got around. Subscribed.
By the way, I particularly appreciate how you broke down the reasons why you don't see black people in many artists' galleries. It DEFINITELY seemed like racism to me before and it was pretty disheartening (it's fine.. used to it lol) but knowing that there are all of those other reasons really made me feel a little better about living in this country ngl. I know it may sound dramatic but it's true. Slightly brighter day for me today :)
sub-saharan african***
@Teflon KC you know exactly what he means in modern day usage.
it doesnt matter thse are just classificattion and division from the colonial man it is one continent with 54 countries
Jasmine Bower We don't know what he means because it's bullshit. Africans are people native to the continent of Africa, and it does not include Arabs.
Great insight, thanks!
When a tattoo artist makes a better shade range on his iPad than the entire cosmetic industry. 😂👏🏾

*TARTE COSMETICS HAS LEFT THE CHAT*
bruh 🤣😭😭
So true
He’s right ...there’s almost no info on tattooing black skin
Saif Fox as a new tattoo artist I wanted to find out more information and there weren’t that many videos. I need to know in order to talk about it with the clients that walk into the shop. Thanks for the video.
He kept it 1000% professional and factual. I have red on my forearm that shows perfectly
That’s so true. Tattoos look different on different skin tones
It’s not black skin it’s dark brown wtf 🤔😐
Meanwhile everyone watching is commenting about race and saying "thank you" but how many of you came for the content. What did you learn from this video (besides he is not a racist)? Exactly. It pains me to see yall here worried about him and what he thinks over what he does for a profession. Sad. Forever slaves.
If your tattoo artist can't spit this knowledge at you, keep walkin.
❤
honestly.
Right!!!!!
Facts. But higher knowledge and skill means more money
you can have the knowledge and 0 skill or experience
Yo!! You even know about our UNDERTONES ALSO???
!!!Winner!!!
Guess you would have to if you’re a tattoo artist. My undertone is olive and it’s hard to get a good match for foundations. Apparently makeup companies don’t know that fair olive tones exist. So tattooing me must present its own challenges cause my undertone is weird
He's of a minority. He knows he knows
He’s really knowledgeable
Sasha V long story short this man is saving you time and money.
Talking about Skin color is not racist. Racism is racist.
americanprincess12 I don’t need that explanation.

Some people just don’t need tattoos at all 😭😭😭
There are some black tattoo artist that DO NOT KNOW this info. Based on what I've learned today I know why my green disappeared.

Word
Stop stealing white culture. Europeans have been getting tattoos for thousands of years so it's a part of our culture. Ötzi the Iceman is over 5000 years old and he had over 20 tattoos. It's white culture, and stealing it is wrong.
Just kidding about stealing our culture. Sharing culture is what humans do
This video was excellent and recommend this for anyone of color who would be considering a tattoo. Excellent!!!!
I like this comment.Thas what i was saying let ppl buy what they want. They understand, but dont wanna.me left behind. We may not see whats on their tattoos but theyre happy. And the guy that made this video is cool too.
Using “darker skin” instead of just “dark” felt inclusive and nuanced. Good stuff and it’s greatly needed and appreciated.
I'm glad you said that so that I don't offend others as I like to try and be all inclusive ! ThanksNazia
@@peaches8530 Bruh your name 😳 but yeah "Darker skin" is better to use
Lick my booty Squeaky clean What may not offend you, may offend someone else. Keep that in mind.
"Inclusive"? Damn people are petty. Proficient at getting offended as well. Dark skin is actually more of an accurate term than "darker" skin, white people can have "darker" skin than other white people and yet that "darker" white person still doesn’t have the DARK SKIN that were talking about.
I disagree. Darker implies that white is the standard and default.
You missed out. If you're a good artist your canvas doesn't matter, you just adjust.
The way he curses while being serious is hilarious to me
Impossible Fondue I’m an articulate piece of shit 🤭

Ive never seen him crack a smile Lol😂
I was thinking the same thing 😂 He’s unintentionally hilarious
Being a black man I appreciate this vid bro
Someone who is literally dark skin from East Africa, I wasn’t offended at all so I don’t want to hear any negative comments. Very educational, and well spoken. Big ups
im a poc with 5/6 skin tone. i appreciated this video because this information is very needed in the darker skinned communities
Ikr? I am from kenya and I was like, "why are guys so salty????"
The video was veeeery informative
Keep in mind that just bc you aren’t offended doesn’t mean that is the standard. Some people don’t get bothered by things, others do.
He said why. He said he didn't want to be labeled racist. I get it.
@@debbiedelgado2877 just proves people don’t know what the real definition of racist/racism is..lol how could it be racist to talk about the facts I Fw this dude for helping me find this info
Yea a white person could have “darker skin” for a white person, I need to hear about black people skin, it’d be nice to know what kind of colors I can get
@@debbiedelgado2877 why would he possibly think this info is racist? dark skin has obvious differences in colour and texture when compared to light skin. and that will obviously affect tattooing, so it should be known.
thinking that acknowledging that difference is ‘bad’ is where the racism is. difference isn’t bad.
it does poc a disservice because there are different techniques to tattoo darker skin. it's more racist to not talk about the differences than it is.

Only an idiot would consider this racist. This is a concern for people with dark skin. Generally the beautiful colors are on white people or lighter skin people , I appreciate you taking the time to leave this video. These are legitimate answers to legitimate questions and concerns.

Eh sis! Umeshaa shoot shot yako 😂😂 way to go though 🤗
Man if you could create software that would help the artist pick a color palette based on specific skin tone, that would be awesome.
mattbantz 🤯 fucking genius!!

Make that idea bro

God bless YOU
Ultimately this junk affects health because ink was never meant for flesh.
Your skin already looks beautiful. No need to mark it up.

I found this extremely educational. He was so knowledgeable and respectful. I thought it was really interesting and insightful.
When he said East African, I assumed he was referring to the Nilotic people.
Is not that deep
This is factual if you've learned any African history vs. say Pacific Islands. African tribes did a lot of branding and cutting that created keloids to make them three dimensional which made the permanent marking more visible paint was used more for ceremonial purposes as opposed to Pacific Islands who did intricate tattooing on their bodies. It's refreshing to watch an honest video. Great work
Right and Exact!!

I've been searching YEARS for advice like this. Like you said, people are afraid to talk about it. It's not racist unless you're demeaning or using the differences in our skin to assert power. Black skin is different...and that's ok. BTW do you have any Detroit tat artists to recommend?
i don't, but i go to detroit every year. i'll be back in march
James Withee let me know the dates cuz I'm sitting in your chair
Right. Everything is called racist nowadays as soon as someone refers to skin color🙄. Giving information about the difference is skin color is not racist!!
@@JamesWithee I'm glad I found this comment. Yes please let us know when your coming to Detroit
singa4hire brown skin. Our skin is never black. It may be a very dark brown but never black. Our hair is black even for the Sudanese
As me being a black person, I respect you 100 percent your just laying facts down.
thx buddy glad i could help with some info
I'm white but I really thought he was soooo knowledgeable and well spoken. Very interesting.
Thank you. As a black guy looking for his first tattoo, you've been very informative. People are super sensitive these days and it's a little ridiculous, but you're coming from a good place. Regards.
Yes this is Im a black artist and I agree with the info instagram.com/dakartattooing/?hl=en
How dare you call people sensitive. You don't know what they've been through. Shame on you.
How dare you make a vast generalization like that.

I am not even getting a tattoo, but I watched the whole video. Very informative.
im not even black but i found this interesting

I'm not interested in getting a tattoo however I appreciate the information as well as the way it was presented.

How can they be “Ink masters” an they don’t do dark skin tats ,”referring to the tv show”,.....
thank u sir the industry needs people to speak up.......my skin is diff which call’s for diff techniques 🤷🏾♂️
they rarely do dark skin on that show if you notice. It makes me so frustrated. They are not ink masters.
RIGHT! they should have at a minimum 2 shows with all black people, stopped watching because of that.
@@clevawoman even when they do, they complain about it
Melaninjas exactly that is so irritating.

I get the "I thought I couldn't get colorful tattoos" from other black people and I'm like "well here I am so yes you can!"
Red, purple, green, light to mid-tone blues (may come out a little greenish depending on the color). I even have orange and yellow (golden yellow, not bright)
It's definitely possible!
I liked how he said other options to think about was to place it on the inside of a forearm where the skin may be lighter and tat is more visible.
You're gonna get A LOT of new clients now! Great vid. Wish we could post pics in the comments. I'd like to show u my tattoo on my light brownish/yellow skin. A pin-up space girl by Jime Litwalk.
Litwalk is the man
Thank you for this video.

You're welcome Yvonne. Glad I could help :)
Same for me
"Um...I don't see colors, in fact, I'm color blind" Stop me if you've heard this one before.

Probably shouldn't be getting tattooed by someone who is color blind.. but that's just mean

Same here. My colors rejected or faded.
Deeply appreciative that about you having actually made this video. Finding info on darker skink tattoos is always a chore and feels really down putting. You put the limitations in a light that wasn't offensive or discriminating but just honest. Considering that I want bomb ass tattoos I am all about the honesty lol. Thanks!
People: “you should discuss undertones of the skin colors!”
Guy on video: literally already did that in the video
People: “you should include photos of dark skin that you’ve tattooed!”
Guy on video: literally already did that in the video
People: “include a chart that includes different skin tones you refer to!”
Guy in video: literally already did that in the video
Moral of the story: if you’re going to complain, at least make sure you’ve watch through the entire video before you start critiquing the presentation.
Teashon Hammond fair enough
The guy with the skull and rose his arm is my coworker xavier price. He’s probably a 7 on the scale even though it looks lighter in the pic. He’s pretty dark. He is also in the pic with the hand tattoo of a triangle and eye mashup. Look him up on ig @xavierpriceart to verify. I know this comment is late, but I appreciate your support. He’s the darkest person I could reference cuz it’s hard to photograph tattoos on skin darker than his. I mentioned that in the video too
The fact he said red bone! I love this dude...lol

Love the way he approached this. He was very meticulous with his wording. Thank you, appreciate the wisdom.
