With a dream theater song, you don’t know what’s harder, learning the actual song, or programming the metronome to it
When I play this I don't even count
@@theyescapedtheweightofdarkness a long long long long time ago... back in high school, someone told me that when you've got a lot of complex time changes, it helped him to look at the music and remove the barlines in his head. Does that work at all at this level?
@@smoothknyte yeah definitely
@@theyescapedtheweightofdarkness neither do I
Same with rush
As a big Dream Theater fan, I would absolutely enjoy a full cover at some point.
Learning this song by reading the sheet music would just confuse me more than listening to it
Yep same
I just learn whatever parts are most interesting and improvise the rest.
Video 3 of commenting till emc makes a vibraslap cowbell
no we need china cymbal hi hats
@@lxtus_xoxo he did it - its on rdavidr’s channel
This man is on another level
@@nathan_khoury no those were gongs
@@lxtus_xoxo that might be a little anticlimactic after the gongs
Video 1 of commenting until EMC makes a drum throne bidet
Ive had the sheet music to this for 10+ years. Looked at it once 10+ years ago, put the book up, sold my kit, and started selling insurance LOL.
😂😂🤣🤣🤣
LMAOOO AHAHHHA
1:45
I think you meant to say "The massive Mike Portnoy drumkit."
Considering Portnoy isn't the drummer anymore, no
@@starkillermarex but he was the one that contributed in writing it at the time
Yeah well the Pic wasn't of portnoys kit so...................................................
@@sebastiansiemaszko1976 Dang. Said it before I could 😂
@@starkillermarex LOLOL
i think you should make a cover of this song because you should make a cover of the song
And he should make a cover of this song
"80% clean, that's a passing grade"
Basically me all the time in college
This would be the hardest dream theater piece to play, but it is also one of their easiest piece to sing.
I can sing it... so EASY
This mind blowing watching him get better at drums right before your eyes he’s going to be an amazing mind blowing drummer in a few years.
Actually, this is how I learned to play. When you learn the rudiments in a concert/marching band setting, applying them to drum set is very simple.
@@JerridFoiles hence the reason I wish I had taken band….. going back to my rudiments now :(
For your next cover you should try The Art of Dying by Gojira, the time signature is technically 4/4 but there’s a really funky polymeter happening between 4/4 and 45/16, or 3/4 and 45/16 depending on how you look at things.
It's like watching someone play drums on rockband for the first time.
Dream theater is my favorite and. And that is super impressive not only that he is able to do that in that amount of time but still provides the sheet music for us to see may be one of my favorite videos I have ever seen😂
Day one of asking Eric to do a full metropolis part 2 cover
You're asking if we want to see a full cover? Um.. YES PLEASE! You were just getting to the interesting part.
One of the most difficult songs I learned. I wasn’t trying to learn it in an hour, either. Great job.
PLEASE learn the whole thing. It's so cool to watch you learn this.
After you finish learning the Dreamtheater song you should learn The Art of Dying by Gojira
You are doing everything perfect in an either 2 beat or 3 beat blast or roll!!!! Awesome job I served 21 years active duty--and I’m super proud of you for serving in the military and to play drums!!!!!
I had several huge opportunities to join some major label bands and when I was 17 I was on a major label and decided to leave the band and join the service!!!!!
It's just so amazing on how experienced sight reader can be. I've been listening to this piece countless times (I have no intention of playing this crazy piece btw) but I'm starting to understand on where the placements of the beat. Thank you for this one! That kit sounds amazing!
"Im going to be learning dance of eternity" *Shows mangina*
Sad DT noises
After spending a number of years working up to this song, this video is actually really helpful in learning the song by watching someone else learn it, And this sheet music/metronome technique is very helpful as well.
This is my most favorite video you have done! Loveeeee DT! Mike is the best!
he says i dont play drumset then goes and learns this in 1 hour which would have taken me like 10 years
He is a professional drummer!
Your editing of your videos is just funny as f*** ! xD keep up the nice work! since i found your channel I enjoy every video!
This guy is the man. Being a professional musician in a very prestigious band and an UA-camr. I take my hat!
This was a great video enjoying every second. You really pick up playing the drumset so easily
It's awesome to see your progression on the kit!
Yes please I'd love to see your progress on the set.
That's a very complex piece, and I think the progress you made in the time allowed was very respectable. Good stuff.
Wow this was so much fun to watch. Love watching you struggle 😘
Ok seriously though... Watching others learn helps me learn how to learn.
Thank you!
Really cool video I'd like to see you continue these 🙌🏻
Definitely finish! I would love to watch a full cover of you doing this song
Great job man! It took me a long time to learn this monster on the kit. Unlike you, I’m a drummer, not a drummer. So I’m fairly comfortable around the kit.
What’s interesting to me is how a part for me to learn would be east for me, and challenging for you. At the same time, parts that I struggled on that took a long time to learn, you nailed right away!
Great job! Such a fun video to watch!
I live for these videos! Makes me want to drag my oboe out and try to get back to where I was in highschool.
You should one hundred percent finish learning this song. That was great. It was pretty awesome to hear the song in my head as you were playing it.
Nicely done Eric! Excellent site reading man.
Keep up the great work you got my attention with your 300 hit drum roll lol!!!!!
Should definitely finish learning this and post cover!
Mike Portnoy is a genius drummer who defies the laws of music to a whole new level.
When you played the song it sounded like you were a beginner and I couldn’t stop laughing !!!!!! I have watched several of your videos and I’ve been playing drums for 36 years-- and I know how good you are!!!!! Keep up the great work!!!!! ❤️🥁❤️🥁🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🤘🤘🤘🤘
its always awesome to see how a professional practices
Yes please! Full song cover.
Pretty damn good for someone who doesn’t play the drums! I’m sure all will agree we want to see tge finished product.... play the full cover!
Love it when you play a kit!
Definitely finish the song! It's a really great one for changing time signatures and has it's fair share of double kick
Absolutely. You must finish the cover. Greatness awaits, sir!
I was left expecting that you played all you learned
so yeah, please more videos on this song
Would love to see a full cover, along with two more cymbals and 3 toms on your kit 🙂
You didn’t fail man! This was fun to watch
I need that full cover now!
you humor is what i live for, thank you
Excellent, great video! Please do the full cover, if you do it you will ascend to extraordinary drummer.
Please! Do a full cover of this!
I second the idea of doing Drum Machine from Animusic vol. 1
Yea! You should finish the songs and im willing to wait to watch you finish the song! ❤️❤️❤️❤️
YES deffs learn the rest and post a cover , that would be awesome , You certainly have the skills to do so :)
Dude I suck at sight reading. It would have taken me a month to learn all that. Great job man!
Granted I never tried to read sheet music for this but I think learning by ear would be much easier. But then again I' listened to this song hundreds of times over the past 20 years.
I think it’d be really cool to see you cover the full song, shits wild af
Awsome man! This is fun 👍
Wish me luck. I got a concert tonight
good luck man, mines next week😃
Good luck
mines in a bit over a week
Good luck!
@Christian Miller yeah. Ikr. I'm in south ga. Were doing it outside lol
I’d love to see you try to learn the rest of this, but I think it would be cool to see you attempt The Enemy Inside because of the intricate singles on the cymbals. A bit easier to follow time signature wise, but with some intricacies here and there which make it rather complex.
Yes we need a cover!!!!
You rock for marching to drums set
Best song for practicing drum set. Keep practicing and give us the cover :D
Yes, post a cover of this song!!
You should learn “Through the fire and flames” on drums
Learning parts of dream theater songs definitely made me a better drummer in high school. I rarely made it through an entire song lol.
Damn, this makes me appreciate Dance of Eternity drum covers that much more.
I've learned that song, played it allot. All I can recognize is the hits.
This is amazing seeing someone struggle with dream theatre so relatable
Man, I gotta tell you. Being someone who learns everything by ear it's crazy to see how you find it difficult to figure out a drum part without knowing the sticking, but I guess that the whole "fun" part of drumming is the diversity of all the musicians! Keep it going and you'll replace Mangini in a few years!
Hey idk if you ever heard of/remember these but there were these DVDs of computer animated music videos called Animusic. These were popular in the early 2000s and there were two volumes. Each set had two different percussion exclusive pieces (Drum Machine in volume 1 and Gyro Drums in volume 2). I’d love to see you try to learn the parts.
I second this!
I remember those DVDs, I think my godmother knew one of the people involved in the project.
We need a part 2 of learning this
That’s was indeed enjoyable! 👍😁
Not nearly as complex as DT but a cover of Toxicity by System of a Down would be awesome. It's got really catchy drum writing
Yes Eric, you definitely should finish learning it! Can't recommend it enough. Later, see if you can learn to play it with 1 bass drum by improvising between it and the floor tom :)
Solid drumming
Yes
YouNailed it!
It's really cool to me how you can read music and just play whatever with enough practice.
Wow your incredible 👏
I’d love to see the finish product or see you attempt the song “Home”
You should totally learn the rest of the solo and post a complete cover!!!
Throwing subtle shade with that 'CURRENT drummer'...
Full drum cover yes please!
Please! Do a full drumline cover. I would cry
"I need to get really good at them as fast as possible" LMFAO I know those feels
This seems like a much more complex way of learning than just listening to and watching portnoy playing like I did back when.
In saying that, I haven't learned a song in years so I don't think I'd be so lucky at this point
Wow nice work!
You must look at Neil Peart
His influence is the big band era
His tempo changes and complex beats are truly the work of a professor!
My favorite song is Yyz
The live versions have the drum solo!
Anyway
Party on Garth!👨🚒
That's child's play for you! Great reading skill!
Imposible 😳
Full cover!!
Good morning sir. Love your content. Also wondering was Queen still at Crown when you were there?
Take care,
Mike C
I'd love to see a full cover with the scrolling sheet music at the bottom.
My friend challenged me to play this so I need your cover
Wooo he plays the DRUMS NOW
