    Trapping enemies on ice then melting the ice is an easy way of killing hard opponents,basically drowning them.

    • @StilesReviews
      @StilesReviews  Рік тому

      It is a cool little thing, I didn't tend to do it since it lead to less rewards in combat though. I tried to always finish enemies off in close range battle.

    • @WilliamScavengerFish
      @WilliamScavengerFish Рік тому

      @@StilesReviews Indeed. You could leave ice around the target which would allow for combat but leave him to drown, sort of a guarantee of completion.

      +Rodrigo Ibarra Thank you very much for watching and commenting. I've still only made a few videos and have only been at this for a short time but already the quality of this video makes me cringe. On the other hand I felt it worked as a great starting point because it is a title I am passionate about.

      Thank you very much for the comment. I'm sorry it took me so long to get back to you, I never got a notification about your comment ^^'. Watching this video now makes me cringe, but It's nice3 to see how far I've come in such a short amount of time lol.

    Man, keep up with your videos. You cover really well the aspects of the game and I felt really nostalgic watching your review. I can see your channel getting very big if you post a new video regularly every week. Apart from that what I have to say is kudos for you!

    • @StilesReviews

      Thank you very much for your feedback and I'm glad you enjoy the video! I haven't put one up in a couple months unfortunately which is a huge failing on my part. Life has been absolutely insane lately, though once I finish moving in the next couple of weeks things should smooth out and I should FINALLY be able to get back into this. Even then a video a week is a tall order since I normally cover RPGs, my goal has been one every two weeks but even that may be a stretch, we will just have to see. I will experiment with the formula and figure things out, all I can do is my best, right? Either way, sorry for the long post and thank you once again for your positive feedback, it really brightened my day.

    • @Teneburusu
      @Teneburusu 8 років тому +1

      My suggestion about 1 video a week is based on youtube statistics and how it would increase relevance, but, please, don't push yourself beyond necessary.
      When I see a channel not being updated frequently and the quality is good like yours I assume the youtuber also have a life and things are not always smooth. I totally understand your point and you don't need to explain yourself to me, but I am happy you care so much about the feedback we give you.
      I will share you channel and help you grow as the quality is nice and I have a bunch of friends who like this kind of video. Also, I am an English teacher and I use videos to allow students to get in touch with English natives. :)

    Subbed 100% Your review and manner of speaking is crystal clear and very concise. Secondly your stance on silent protagonists is exactly how I feel. While it doesn't ruin a game for me it does greatly hinder the potential experience. However dragon quest 5 does it right in my opinion. But persona is an example of it done wrong. Despite it having dialogue options I really cannot enjoy persona, not just for the silent protagonist but for its overall clichés.
    I'd also like to make the comment that this game could have been something truly magical. The art and concept is fucking phenomenal. Absolutely gorgeous. But it more or less feels like a big experiment and one they didn't think would mesh well with the west and, I can see why and I'm sure you can too. Anyway thanks for the review! I'll be subbing now and checking out your other videos.

      Thank you very much for watching! It still surprises me how much love this video gets, as it's the first video review I ever did. My quality has improved a great deal since then (thank goodness). I still have a fondness for this review because it shows my humble beginnings, but it is quite cringeworthy to me now lol.
      I truly love this game, but like most things, it isn't perfect, I can definitely see why it wasn't localized. Between this and Seiken Densetsu 3, we really did miss out on some great RPGs. Anyway, thank you so much once again for commenting and subscribing, reading new comments always brightens my day!

    I played this game for the first time far back in 2002 (probably as soon as the final translation was released), and this game grew on me so fast, this is the best game ever yet to be officially released on the west...

      Cheers mate, it was a pretty good review of one of the best games I've played, you just missed the part that we had to grind the fuck of our asses just to beat a side quest, the Hard Dungeon, man, I remember when I did that for the first time, 10 minute cheering after that, after losing *so many frickin' times,* unless you do it pretty late in the game, like in the last 5 maps, it's practically impossible to beat it before a new game+

    • @StilesReviews
      @StilesReviews  6 років тому +1

      The first time I played through the game I think I had to grind a lot, the second time I don't feel I had too much at all. I don't recall when I did the hard dungeon, but when I got too it, I was able to take it out no problem. I think that's because I was using every turn possible to REALLY make sure I got the best equipment drops from each encounter, which made all of my dragons level at a really smooth rate. I don't recall having to grind at all, which surprised me, because I'd thought I'd remembered grinding more in my first play through. These are the sorts of things I'd be more likely to bring up now than I would back when I made this video, I've improved a lot and you make a good point. Wish I'd thought of it back then lol.

    I need to play this game. I have had the translated ROM for quite some time. Did you really find all the Mana games to be horrible?

    • @StilesReviews
      @StilesReviews  6 років тому

      Thanks for watching! It is a great game. In answr to our question, no, I don't think they are ALL horrible. I think that most of them are pretty bad (Specifically Children of Mana, Dawn of Mana, and Heroes of Mana...) I think Secret of Mana is incredibly underwhelming and overpraised... but I genuinely love Seiken Densetsu 3, Legend of Mana and Final Fantasy Adventure a.k.a. The First Mana game. Sword of Mana I'm just kinda 'meh' too. I actually have written reviews of all the games on my blog if you are curious. I don't use it much anymore, but the chance of me re-reviewing those games in video form is pretty slim so... that's pretty much the only way to see my perspective on them in the forseeable future.

      @@StilesReviews I love Secret of Mana on SNES, but I think that has a bunch to do with how I first experienced the game. I got it pretty much when it released, and my cousin and I played it exclusively co-op from the earliest point you can until the end of the game. It probably wouldn't be so great to me if that situation had been much different. I am going to have to give the 3rd in the series a try, as I hear tons of good things about it.

  • @electricmastro
    @electricmastro 7 років тому +1

    I heard that this, along with Live A Live, Seiken Densetsu 3, and Treasure of the Rudras are the best SNES RPGs developed by Square that were never released in America. It's quite a shame they still haven't come over.

    • @StilesReviews
      @StilesReviews  7 років тому

      Thank you very much for watching. Seiken Densetsu 3 and Bahamut Lagoon are indeed two of the best, in my opinion. Better than some of the games that actually were brought over (Secret of Mana specifically). Treasure of the Rudras I've yet to play but have been meaning too. Live a Live however... meh. I've played it. It's a very creative and interesting premise but rather lackluster in terms of gameplay execution.

    • @electricmastro
      @electricmastro 7 років тому +1

      Yeah. Speaking RPGs, regarding your stance on silent protagonists, you're actually the first person I've ever heard say to actively dislike the idea. I've never heard any players say they liked it, but I get the feeling that there are people who like it, as I've seen Link and Chrono be highly popular with people despite not speaking full sentences. Perhaps it's just a matter of taste. IDK. Haha.
      In speaking of Treasure of the Rudras, it's rather interesting. It's a turn-based RPG in which the player is able to create and perform "Mantras" in combat, which are built by typing words into the game engine, and each of them then turns into a spell with different effects, elemental types and spell cost. That can provide some great experimentation and replay value in seeing what combination of letters work with others for attacks and healing.

    • @StilesReviews
      @StilesReviews  7 років тому

      Yeah... I really don't care for Silent Protagonists lol. To be a bit more clear than in my video, I hate silent protagonists, but not enough for it to necessarily ruin a game for me. I've never heard an argument regarding Crono or Link being 'awesome' character's beyond their art design and/or historical significance. There's nothing wrong with that necessarily, Character design is the only reason I like some characters (Sephiroth from FFVII being a big and controversial example)
      As for Treasure of the Rudras, I am aware of it, and am highly intrigued by the gameplay ideas presented in it. I greatly appreciate you passing along the info all the same.

      Thank you very much for the comment and the subscribing! It is greatly appreciated! I actually haven't played Ogre Battle yet if I'm being honest, but I am a huge fan of FF Tactics and know that a lot of the original Ogre Battle team worked on both, so I'd likely enjoy it a great deal. Ogre Battle would likely be a more in depth experience, but from what I've heard they are both very much worth playing. I'm working on quite a few different videos right now, none of which are SNES titles at the moment, but there will definitely be more of those in the future.

    Are there traditional rpg towns in this game? And if so, how many?

    • @StilesReviews
      @StilesReviews  6 років тому +1

      I don't remember the exact number, I feel it was about 4? And depends on how strict your definition of 'Traditional' is. Every town/hub area (as your ship acts as the main one) has shops and is filled almost entirely with your Army, who are all fleshed out DECENTLY.. not immensly. There aren't very many NPCs in the game... given how large the cast is already though, I don't see that as a bad thing.

    • @awesomieRee123
      @awesomieRee123 6 років тому +1

      Stiles' Reviews I see. You hit it on the mark with what I meant by traditional. Towns that have shops and npcs. Places that essentially act as areas you spend free time in between battles to recuperate and prepare for the next battle, basically. I'm sure the party spends a lot of down time on the Fahrenheit, though.

    That game should be remade in HD2D style, with updated gameplay/UI for modern quality of life improvements and conveniences.
    I tried this game so many times and always loved it but never could get too far cause it's just too demanding, gets really tedious. If they remade it and improved some aspects as mentioned before, it would be fantastic.
    Also, on topic of fan translations. Sometime during the late covid lockdown a new translation was relieased that was vastly superior to the one that had been circulating online before. Sadly the guy who made it unalived himself shortly after due to some mental issues and stuff happening in his private life. Such a shame for such a talent. If only SqEx had noticed him and employed him to use his work for a remake... Eh :(

    Hi again. You think my English is good?! Thanks a lot. I will look for a translated Repro cartridge. I prefer to play on original hardware. Its so sad that Square didnt release so much good Games outside of Japan. So many gems. Have you played Secret of Mana 2 or Treasures of the Rudras? If yes then i would love to see reviews from you to this games. There is a question coming to my mind. What do you like more: Retro or current?

    • @StilesReviews
      @StilesReviews  8 років тому +1

      I am so, SO sorry for the delay here. I don't know how I missed this comment and didn't reply too it. I actually have played Seiken Densetsu 3 (Or Secret of Mana 2 as you put it) and I reviewed it and the entire mana series in text form over at charlottebuckingham.net, under the SSS drop down menu. I absolutely loved Seiken Densetsu 3 despite not being a fan of most of the series. Treasures of the Rudras is another game I've really wanted to play because the concept interests me, but I've yet to get around too it. As far as if I prefer retro or current... I really enjoy both, it just depends. Current technology has offered us a great deal more freedom in what can be produced, but there has been a long standing tradition of limitations breeding creativity when it comes to Retro games. There are pros and cons on both sides of the fence and it really depends what I'm in the mood for.

    I was playing Bahamut Lagoon today, and I was at the chapter where you have to go to the dam at the waterfall to drown the troops. I hate it because, 1, you can only do it once and it only does 1000 to the enemies in the range, and hurts your own guys for 200, super not worth the amount of time it takes to get up there, and 2, I had a team that got instantly KOd at full health when one mage casted Exorcise. Why would the devs make a spell that can insta-KO a team with full health, and put that waterfall there if it is completely worthless!? I took all day and 9 save slots just to beat it, UGHHHHH!!! I haven't played the whole game yet, but I cannot fathom if there is somehow a worse level in the game.

    I stumbled upon this game by accident looking for a fan translations after finding my beloved Fire Emblem Genealogy of the Holy War and was baffled that I found "Final Fantasy Tactics" - another game I absolutely love that I grew up on. I had to see for myself. I can't help but feel Bahamut Lagoon and Final Fantasy V were more "experiment" games that borrowed sprites, artwork, and sounds from Final Fantasy VI and Final Fantasy IV, put their more unique gameplay styles onto them, and then actually listened (gasp!) to their fanbase's feedback and continued to refine. I also imagine the reason we didn't receive it here in the West would be fear of poor sales.
    Great review, Stiles! I can't wait to watch more of your reviews. for your first video review, I have to say I am amazed at the quality. Keep up the good work.

    • @StilesReviews
      @StilesReviews  6 років тому

      Thank you very much for the kind words. The quality has most definitely improved since this video ^^' Working on my Chrono Trigger video as we speak.
      I've always wanted to get into the Fire Emblem series. I keep buying them.. but I think the furthest I've ever gotten was about halfway through awakening. I was loving it, but trying to play it as a completionist was a very bad idea... (As a newcomer to the series anyway). Final Fantasy V is less experimental than you'd think.. it's basically just a reworked version of the gameplay that had already been used in FFIII, which by extension was a reworking of the original Final Fantasy's Class system.

    • @ValbjornsRespite
      @ValbjornsRespite 6 років тому +1

      Stiles' Reviews Well, I meant that FFV was more experimental in terms of class abilities and customization. Great game though. III on DS was amazing, definitely a staple of my teenage years.
      Fire Emblem Awakening is definitely a good intro to the series (and arguably the game that saved the franchise), but can be overwhelming in terms of being a completionist, or rather a perfectionist. It doesn’t have the hidden items and missions like FFT does, but the relationship/children system and class design can be a bit complex under its simple exterior. However, other titles such as the newest Echoes: Shadow of Valentia are much more straightforward.
      Good luck on your Chrono Trigger video! Can’t wait to see more.

    • @StilesReviews
      @StilesReviews  6 років тому

      Yeah, Perfectionist is most definitely the better term for it. Trying to recruit some of the extra characters and wanting to try and keep everyone alive without copping out and playing on the casual difficulty mode lol. I was enjoying it, but it was getting too stressful, and the fact that I can't record 3DS footage poses an issue. Since I focus on RPGs it's gotten to the point where dedicating playtime to anything I don't plan on reviewing is almost impossible. I'm struggling to keep my uploads coming as is.
      Thanks again for the intelligent discussion and for watching, it is greatly appreciated!

    • @xxJing
      @xxJing 4 роки тому +1

      Benjamin McLean There was no sequel because the game was met with a lot of anger in Japan due to the story. So much so that it has become a meme that most Japanese gamers are aware of.
      A lot of people say “well it’s just realistic that the main heroine may not choose the protagonist.” However, Bahamut Lagoon sets you up for a romance just to shatter it brutally and then rubs salt in your wound on top of that by constantly implying that Pal and Yoyo are banging, making out all over the place, and that Pal has a bigger dick than Byuu does. It left people with a bad taste in their mouths and Square made sure to go light on the NTR themes afterwards.

  • @rayhanalfriz9545

    well, to be honest. One of a thing that makes me really pissed about this game is, Yoyo's Love attraction
    Really, The MC always help her and been through a lot with her and The result, The MC Got NTR-ed by a Kidnapper Knight of enemy empire.
    I kinda dislike NTR Case like in this game.

    • @StilesReviews
      @StilesReviews  7 років тому

      Your english was fine, I had to look up NTR though ^^'. Frankly I enjoyed this aspect of the romance because it broke convention. There is an expectation in Western Culture that the Hero should get the girl strictly because he is the hero, and yet that is very rarely how real romance works. People grow and change through out their life, and the 'romance' between Byuu and Yoyo was a young infatuation, not a true romance, at least that's how I remember it.
      I liked it because it broke free of cliche. I'm definitely not saying you are 'wrong', I also enjoy romance quite a bit in the stories I consume.. but here I felt it fit with the entire vibe of the game.. it was all about how bittersweet war actually is, and a subversion of 'the hero lives happily ever after."
      Besides... Yoyo was kind of pathetically stupid.. Byuu can do better anyway ^^'
      Either way, thank you so much for watching and even more for commenting!
