Even as someone who has never touched the Final Fantasy series in his life, I absolutely loved this deep dive analysis on FF 15. You defended your arguments masterfully and brought to light some of the biggest problems that plague not just the video game industry, but the entertainment industry as a whole. Especially the fact that so many people somehow miss blatantly obvious flaws or just choose to not acknowledge them for seemingly completely arbitrary reasons. It's nice to see somebody who isn't afraid to point that stuff out even if it may result in people getting all whiny about it.

It was the ds version of FF4 that introduced me to the series. Final Fantasy 4 will always be my personal favorite installment.

When I played FF3 for the first time, I chose the PSP version (3D) and I HATED it Then I played the Pixel Remaster and it's one of my favorite FF games Btw Scholars can deal HUGE damage with items, so they are actually pretty good in boss fights, I defeated CoD with a Scholar

The thing I hated about legend 1 and 2 is weapons are limited.. After a set amount of uses, it breaks.. Especially the final weapon in legend 2 which can only be used 7 times(and that's not the worst of it, you have to kill Haniwa.. Haniwa is fuckin hard and you're not guaranteed a seven sword cause they decided to be assholes and make the 7 sword a near impossible drop).. Another problem about the final areas of legend 1 and 2 are the end areas, its nearly impossible to run from enemies.. So you'll often find yourself near death by the time you fight creator or arsenal(at least they take it easy on you before you fight creator cause there's a healing area before the fight, youre fucked when it comes to legend 2)..

Funnily enough the inspiration of the story comes from sima qian "shiji" compilation of chinese historical epic. Its story mirrors that of the fall of the qin dynasty (empire of ludivictus) who conqured the other kingdoms (Qi, Han, Chu, Wei, Zhao, Yao). At first it brought stability. But as Qin shi huang di (emperor ludivictus) grew old he become obsessed with immortality. He burned books, excuted confucian scholars. Impose heavy labour duty. Eventually rebellion started to forment in various former 6 kingdoms. In chu, a local magistrate started a sucessful rebellion led by xiang liang (Isoro feniche). With the help of hos formidable cousin, Xiang yu (Balastar feniche). At the same time, A low born peasant and local scoundrel. Liu bang (Eden) was supposed to escort group of penal convict to labour camp. Got lost, and some prisoners escape along the way. Fearing the consquence. He joined the rebellion. Xiang yu and Liu bang become best friend quickly due to liu bang charms and silver tongue. Xiang liang later killed in an ambush at battle of dingtao (battle of seinzfeld) by qin commander Zhang han (General caspar) After that they part ways. With xiang yu head north to support a rebellion in zhao (Linnoit). While liu bang lead a vanguard to capture qin capital xiangyang (Leroyaure). Along the way charm, cajole, bribed enemeis to switch sides (Viturin anyone?). Turns out empetor had died months earlier and his trusted advisor Eunuch Zhao gao (prime minister maurin) took control for months pretending that emperor still alive. And proceed to xiang yang with intent to kill liu bang. Later liu bang hosted a banquet at hong gate (Viodelle) to repair relation with xiang yu. Xiang yu planned to assasinate liu bang but then hestitate to go throught the plan. Eventually liu bang escaped and rather than kill him outright xiang yu exiled liu bang to mountainous wasteland in sichuan (Liviyu). Xiang yu tgen proceed to loot, burn, and massacre the population of Xiang Yang. Liu bang fearing xiang yu changed his mind burned the gallery road (Like eden burning the gallery road linking liviyu to artemisia). Liu bang then spent some years building his army, securing alliances, amd bidding his time. He became temperamental and moody. (Just like eden). Eventually his old friend xiao he came back and recruited a talented general Han xin (Klara) to assist him. While in exile, Xiang yu was busy stomping opposition (just like balastar did). Eventually a big revolt in state of Qi (Hullisberg) draw xiang yu away from the capital. Liu bang then ordered an attack on guanzhong (vyugar). Who was garrisoned by former qin general Zhang han (Caspar). The rest of the story really similar. Xiang yu crushed liu bang time and time again. But liu bang keep coming back. Meanwhile, liu bang semi independent commander han xin (klara) keep winning victory after victory in the north while xiang yu is busy dealing with liu bang in a wild goose chase in the south. Eventually xiang yu gave up and signed a peace treaty. Which liu bang immediately broke after xiang yu turn his army back to chu. In a battle of gai xia (battle of charteau). Surrounded on three sides, xiang yu fought a fighting withdrawal back to his fortified camp in gaixia. Han xin then ordered his troops to sing a song about chu (much like eden sing a song in the game). That cause mass desertation of xiang yu chu troops. With only 800 elite men loyal left. He stormed out of the siege and made his last stand in Wu river (Neben river). Where he died. Chopped up to 8 pieces. Because liu bang promise a rank of nobility and a fief to whoever bring proof of xiang yu death.

I always kept Marle in my party for a few reasons, it felt good to have her and Crono in the same party together, (get that sh*t Crono) I really liked using haste, and with her and Ayla in the party I could twin charm stuff.

I hated the new cutscenes in the DS version of FF4 because they felt forced and fanfic-y. That feeling applies to the entirety of this game.

That game should be remade in HD2D style, with updated gameplay/UI for modern quality of life improvements and conveniences. I tried this game so many times and always loved it but never could get too far cause it's just too demanding, gets really tedious. If they remade it and improved some aspects as mentioned before, it would be fantastic. Also, on topic of fan translations. Sometime during the late covid lockdown a new translation was relieased that was vastly superior to the one that had been circulating online before. Sadly the guy who made it unalived himself shortly after due to some mental issues and stuff happening in his private life. Such a shame for such a talent. If only SqEx had noticed him and employed him to use his work for a remake... Eh :(

I would love it if a fan made mode could fix all these issues. Maybe even give some choice to story elements for a bit of flavor. Will this likely happen? Probably not. This is a nostalgic game for me as it was the game that introduced the ff world to me a perfect entry to start at any age. Other titles had more customization, and I feel ff 4 was meant to be user-friendly for new players. I think the layer years could have added a more fun ff 6/ 3 usa style of play with so many characters, another missed opportunity. Ff 6 being my other favorite title at that age.

I got 5x green dragon tails and still can’t get any rare items to drop. Fuck the developers of this game.

That title is perfect, this is exactly what FF6 is. This is a game that could heavily benefit from a remake, for it's final act SPOILER WARNING after the world colapses.

I really like the 3D version but I do agree that the 100% map completion thing kinda gimmickly takes you out of the experience, I'll probably wont interact with it anymore, maybe outside of some specific dongeons where I know it's worth it hehe.

This game has an extremely important place in my heart, as the game that'd turn me into an rpg-head. While a lot of pieces of the story aren't great, it contains no shortage of fantastic ones as well. I couldn't bring myself to dislike the dumb bits too much though, by way of rose-tinted glasses and the context that story-oriented games didn't exist nearly as much back then.

1. The OST was so good and i am a musician so this game stuck with me from that alone 2. You are right it was a slog to playthrough, especially without an emulator/no speed up 3. Despite that I really respect games for taking chances with game design, and some of the cool concepts that came out of it. The way they did job roles specifically in this game were so sick and i would love to see certain aspects of the combat be brought back, unfortunately it took way too long to reach a fun endgame. I have a similar experience with FF13 (my favorite Square game ironically), the combat system was so innovative and fun, but it turned alot of the fanbase off. It also took a long time to reach mid/endgame, but god was the combat soo fun

Not sure if you're pronouncing it right? But I've never heard that word spoken TBH. Anyway, I was intrigued by this game but it sounds like it's not worth the aggravation. Probably will not be buying it unless it goes to the bargain bin.

As a huge fan of FFIV, I have to say that After Years was…okay. It wasn’t great, but it wasn’t terrible either. It had a decent enough story. And I like how the devs tried to do something a little different than the generally linear storyline of the mainline games. I agree that the chapter system was not well fleshed out, since it made each chapter very linear and virtually eliminated any chance of exploration. The moon phase system was a cool idea that could have been implemented better. The band system, while at least seeming like a cool idea, didn’t really add anything to gameplay. But at least for nostalgia value, this game is worth it. By the way, I had the PSP version aka Final Fantasy IV Complete Collection

1-time use attacks, thrice ruined by shit developer intel pacing. yah, that’s not good. how much developers spend on play-testing , and finding good play-testers, should always be a priority before publishing. because if the sony developers program charge developers 10s of thousands $ to release a patch, that could’ve just been spent on solid play-testers prior.

The town design looks so good, with the opening shot of wind brushing the dry grass. I still might get a copy just because of that 😂

Currently playing through the game, not sure if I want to finish. The game was... alright though some of the tales were a hit or miss. The game didn't get interesting until the last few tales of the game. The final dungeon was attrocious for me, aggregiously long with encounter rates out the wazoo, the throwback bosses were alright. Some things in this game I enjoyed, most of it felt lazy though.

FFIV on Chronicles didn’t have long load times, the original 97 port did. The only lengthy part was to save the game took like 10 seconds, and probably why they add a “memo save” as a workaround?

For A Vast Future is truly the best. Had it existed as a Game Boy game back in the day, I would have had fond memories with it during the GBC era.

I could never get into the 3D remake's art style. I know it was initially developed for the Nintendo DS and they wanted to make the low-poly models look as much like the original sprites as possible within the limitations of a handheld less powerful than the original Playstation, but it is just too weird to hear the game's touching story of redemption and betrayal with its melodramatic pseudo-Shakespearean dialogue spoken through what basically look like scantily-dressed Precious Moments figurines.

yeah. the story was soooo. blech. The writers obviosly favored the villains more than the heroes. The villains were more interesting and competent. The heroes felt weak and oh so stupid. And I couldnt even make plot decisions to make them act smarter. I just felt like I was stuck with stupid, weak characters who were destined to fumble their way to the end of the story no matter what. I guess the wanted to make it feel like you were facing a challenge.... but it felt like... AFTER you beat a tough challenge at the toughest difficulty the game would say to you..."Boy, we totally screwed that up, huh? We suck!"... The motivation to go above and beyond drained away when no matter what feats you do, your forces just barely squeak by in the story. If you like powerless fantasy, this game is for you though. your perfect battle will go unnoticed throughout the game as your army runs for their lives again and again. As your leader loses in the story over a over.

The combat against Monsters IS NOT interesting. It's BULLSHIT. They have too many HP to start with; they constantly change where their "weak" points are so you're all but guaranteed NOT to be able to reach them with whatever asshole has the weapon you need to actually HIT it... and even if you do, it does about as much damage as an attack against a regular unit... meanwhile their total HP even at the start of the game is about as much as 3 normal units. The manticore on Chapter 5 (and whoever thought that was a good idea AFTER making me fight like 5 hellhounds) can absolutely kiss my ass at 130 HP. Fucking retarded. >.< You'd love to see other devs try their hand at it; I'd literally SHOOT any dev that was that level of stupid. : / I was already pissed off enough at Dragon's Dogma 2... I really don't need devs to be any more assholish.

FF4 was my first experience way back in my early teens. It was the GBA version and alongside Dragon Quest 8, the reason I got into RPGs in general. So in terms of the FF series, FF4 and FF10 are my two stand out favourites.

I found FFIV significantly harder on Steam than this game, oddly enough. I think part of the problem was that the enemies hit so hard that focusing down one enemy so they can't all gang up on one of yours is just so much better than doing crowd control. I only used black magic when the game made me in the Mini sections, and I ended the game (minus the Iron Giant) with no party wipes and only one retreat. Final Fantasy IV, on the other hand, managed to gank me within the first half hour when Kain and Cecil got swarmed and petrified by a group of four Cockatrice. The boss gimmicks in FFIII were also so inconsequential that I could just treat them as random encounters with a little more hit points. I agree with your other criticisms of this game, however. Even as my first Final Fantasy game, I felt like it was a lacking experience.
