om thank you for restoring my sanity. i had a whole load of problems when buying a new axle for my 19mm Spanish bottom bracket and now after watching this i can sleep at night :D
I'm building a bike from the frame out and had no clue what I was doing til I watched your video. Thanks so much for helping me figure out that my frame had an American bb, it was the missing link. Keep up the great work.
Hey...awesome video and very informative. I have always used 1 piece cranks and I am going to venture into the 3 piece and you made it too easy that I cannot mess it up.
You're welcome. I thought those were part of the frame, or welded or pressed in place when I first did this as well. I wish bike parts came with instructions. I'm glad I could help.
Many thanks guys, took the laptop out to the bike , had to pause you guys a few times and all is well ,my lads bike is up and running, many thanks, keep up the good work...Steve
I can tell that you took that original 3 piece off, then installed the 1 piece just to show how to remove it then installed a replacement 3 piece. That's alot of extra work and you deserve credit. I made a video on how to install a new 1 piece 10 years ago when there were not any videos on that and I'm glad to see there are more videos now. I got to say, WOW on the 500K views, in 10 years my video has gotten 53K. Then again I don't have 97K subs LOL No but really, GREAT video! I love how you showed how easy it is to make a bearing press to install cups the best way. I did use a hammer in my video but I did show how to do it carefully. Again, great video yo!
Awesome vid. My euro bearings broke and long term its cheaper to just get a new frame and bracket. Now i can use my old diamondback and turn it into something decent. Thanks
This vid is very helpful. I have a newer kink curb with a unsealed American bottom bracket. The look of a sealed bb is awsome. Looking to get rid of the big nut and replace with the cone washers. So much cleaner looking.
I this one of the better videos on you tube i think ive watched mainly cause when you watch a video explaining how to do something they treat you like your stupid but in this video is was good wasn't annoying and it helped inform me what i need to do with my bike
First of all I would like to tell you that this video helped me out tremendously. It still was a ball buster but without this video I would have been twisting in the wind. So, again I thank you 💯
Thanks for this. Ordering an XL Floval Flyer and Redline Flight cranks. Have never installed 3 piece cranks before now, so I wanted a quick lesson. Seems easy enough. Your kids are funny!
thanks for the video. I’m rebuilding and old miraaco bmx and needed the help and the parts. My bike have a three piece crank set, I just need the new seal bearing kit. Thanks again.
My sprocket has a spacer built into it. Do you have to have an additional spacer of any kind between the sprocket and the euro bb? Clearance is fine and chain in straight.
Hoohoohoblin , while removing my press fitted cups on the loose ball BB i dug into the frame a bit using a flathead. Do you think ill have any problems
I had hard time to fit the sealed bearings bottom bracket cups into my 88 Haro Master bmx. I had to use a hammer and tap them really hard to get them in. I am sure it shouldnt be that hard to install them. I believe the problem was the sealed bottom bracket kit I bought, cups were bit bigger and needed to sand them down a bit. Worth spending a few $$ more to get a descent brand. Great video, whole procedure looks very easy to do, while I spend more than an hour to do the job.. I will get that DIY tool as well. :)
I've found an old Bmx bike (store bought) in the trash this past summer & the 1 piece crank was garbage along with the chain & such. I've been dabbling in thought of getting a 3 piece crank because it's better & durable. Here's my question, is it worth my money to get a 3 piece crank system on a bike i found in the trash, or should i just go install a 1 piece crank & ride it like that. I'm a fan of BMX, & i used to do some tricks when i was a kid, but i haven't done that in years since i my bmx got stolen. thanks for your advice, & i enjoy your bmx videos & how to's :)
+Sasha DC It depends on what parts you have. A bottom bracket kit is around $20, and a crank set with a sprocket would be close to $100. A good BMX bike sells for about $300, so you have to figure out what you want and what you are willing to spend.
Cool vid! I have a question. Can these crankarms be used with a chainring used on a regular one piece crank? And what about an offset chainring? I am asking because I am considering upgrading the drivetrain on my Felt cruiser. :)
You might be able to drill holes in the chain ring if you could get it off the old crank. But it would be better to just buy a new chain ring with the new cranks. Sometimes it just makes more sense to buy a whole new bike, as these parts can get expensive.
@@hoohoohoblin I guess I wasn't quite clear. My Felt cruiser (tank frame) has originally one piece crank. It also has offset rear sprocket and an offset chainring, because I run a 3" wide tire. So I want to know if I can still use the offset chainring if I switch to 3 piece cranks.
I have an old diamondback bmx bike from like 10 years ago , it has lots of upgrades such as tires , hubs ,bearings , chain , pedals and stem , it also has a 1 piece crank with unsealed bearings. Would it be a good idea to do this or just keep running the stock crank
Thanks! Will run to HD and buy the bolt and washers was not sure how to install my new bb cups. Will also be using the bolt for headset installation as well.
My first bmx bike was American unsealed bb. Over and over the bearings would fall apart and usually end in the cranks locking up and tossing me over the bars. Finally i wised up and bought a bike with mid sealed. I don't know why i never got this kit. It would have saved me some headaches.
hey do i have to take out those 2 things around @1:20? cuz ther not comming out... the unsealed bb kit? can i just leave them in there instead of using those american bb cups things? u know the cup type things that the bearings go into? plz respond
The cups have to come out for the kit to fit in. On the bikes I've worked on, they are just pressure fit in, and can be pounded out. I don't know if some bikes have them welded or threaded in.
Not sure how would be the best way to do that. Maybe put a flat short piece of wood through the hole, then turn it sideways inside against the edges, and pound it out with a stick or socket extension.
They both work similarly when they’re new. They one piece crank is one single piece, and a three-piece crank has two cranks and an axle in the middle. Upgrading from a one piece crank to a two piece or three-piece crank is expensive, and it’s often a better idea to just buy a whole new bike that already has the Cranks you want.
I went to Home Depot and got a big bolt and nut and some metal washers and rubber washers. If you go there, you can find all the parts. You can see it in this video: ua-cam.com/video/e1qakUMWiwQ/v-deo.html
I am trying to change my bearings on my Sunday 2018 blueprint. It has the same cup things in the B.B. do I need this special American bearing or am I good using a 19 mm bearing or 22

we bought an adapter for american to euro but it looks like the sealed bearings stick out too far. do they make different adapters that will allow the sealed bearing to sit flush?
i recently switched from the old school ball bearings and ordered a redline american 22mm bb, the center tube will slide over the spindle but, the spindle is threaded and will not slide through the sealed cartridges...any suggestions? its an old school DK General Lee with an iron cross 3-piece, 1995-99 model i believe, are some spindles just not compatible for a bb?
hello, so I installed the cups, the bearings, but it seems that the 8 spline spindle is too long for the crank arms. I have about half inch of clearance in the non drive side, any help?
i have a unsealed three piece crank set but i don't think i have that washer the goes on the sprocket do i need that to make my bottom bracket sealed? or does the washer that is on my set up now work?
I'm using 1 too with about 52-4 teeth sized sprocket... so I cant effort 2 or 3... Is there a way to use small sprocket like 24 or any without changing cranks or making it ugly??.
I have three piece cranks and I can get the crank off that has the sprocket but I can take the other one off and then take it out and would I need a new sprocket
Sir I love this video and i was thinking of doing the same thing to my bike. I take it that it's an American size as you said, (though the bike, I'm sure that is made in China....) Anyhow, It has two disks up front, so i would need a set that's similar. A tooth off, wont matter on either sprocket... What would you recommend buying as a kit and from whom? Ebay comes to mind, but they have a million kits....I'd like to keep it looking similar to what it is, now. (about 20 years old or so...) Thank you for your time. TV
This is an old video, so I don’t know if you can still get them from Danscomp.com but that is where we bought a kit to do the conversion back then. They are good at answering phone calls and emails, so you could call and ask them.
Are MID sized bottom brackets the American sized ones? I am looking for replacing my 1 piece cranks too. just possibly with 2 piece. anyways. would like to get an answer! :)
Gatis Girdenis They are different sizes. This sizing guide does a great job of showing the difference: www.danscomp.com/serve/products|charts/bearingchart.htm
thanks for the answer, but another question. wouldn't they fit too, because "Mid BB’s use an American sized bearing that presses directly into the frame without the use of a cup, leaving a flush fit."
Gatis Girdenis oh. I guess your video actually answered it. but are you sure that mid sized ones are smaller than american ones? because I can't find any american sized bb, just the mid sized ones.
Danscomp sells American sized bottom brackets. That is where I got it. Here is a link. www.danscomp.com/products.php?by=NAME&order=ASC&cat=PARTS&group=BMX%20Bottom%20Brackets&attribute=bottombrackets&bbtype=American

i know this is old and probably wont get a response but ill try. i have a Sunday 2019 blueprint complete bmx and it has 8 spline 3 piece cranks but an unsealed spindle and crankset i already know that i need to get sealed spindle when i get sealed bearing but will i need to upgrade my crank or should they work with an 8 spline spindle?
I think you can get an eight spline spindle for it. You’d have to check with the bike shop to make sure, but because it is a brand new bike, they probably use the same cranks on their sealed bearing versions.
hoohoohoblin thanks i just asked my bike shop if they would work and they said yeah they would, nice to know i dont need new cranks cause my sunday cranks are pretty good cause there 3peice 170mm and full chromo
I don't remember, but I know it was American sized. Here is a chart to show you the different types of bottom bracket. www.danscomp.com/serve/products%7Ccharts/bearingchart.htm
No. You will need to get them out to put the sealed bearings in. On most bikes they are pressed in and you can just pop them out by hitting them from the inside.
honestly most informative video out there.

my bb is threaded is it possible to install the bearings?
How do I keep the little tube thing inside the bb straight when I tap the cups in
It comes off by turning it with your fingers?(The "screw like washer" on the outside)
The nut on the one piece crank needs to be taken off with a wrench. The washer under it should just slip off. It doesn't have threads on it.
I need an answer, if your frame is american bb should i use also a american bb?
How do you like up the spindle?

They both work similarly when they’re new. They one piece crank is one single piece, and a three-piece crank has two cranks and an axle in the middle. Upgrading from a one piece crank to a two piece or three-piece crank is expensive, and it’s often a better idea to just buy a whole new bike that already has the Cranks you want.

do cranks with pins instead of bolts work aswell? (so you dont have to attach the sprocket to the crank)
They work, but a bolt is more secure.
allright, thanks for your advice!
After you removed that one piece crank how did you determine the length of the spindle to use?
I think they are all a standard length. The diameters sometimes vary. This one is 19 mm.

No. If the chain has removable links, you will have to remove some links to make it shorter.
What three price cranks did you use ?

They should be flush. on mine, they went in all the way. Maybe the spindle is too long.

i have a unsealed three piece crank set but i don't think i have that washer the goes on the sprocket do i need that to make my bottom bracket sealed? or does the washer that is on my set up now work?
Dylan Nolan that was just a spacer you don't really need it
Dylan Nolan it goes in the sprocket making the inner diameter smaller if not there the sprocket would flop up down as you pedal
I'm using 1 too with about 52-4 teeth sized sprocket... so I cant effort 2 or 3... Is there a way to use small sprocket like 24 or any without changing cranks or making it ugly??.
The sprocket can be changed. I made a video showing how it fits on. ua-cam.com/video/ZF8RF-eD9-k/v-deo.html
Thanks for the video bro but I have one question why would you need a smaller chain?
If the new parts have fewer teeth on the sprockets you need to shorten the chain to fit.
Oh okay but if your going to have the same sprocket you don't need to worry about that?
Okay so I'm looking for a 3 price crank rn and I can't find any good deals how much money do you recommend spending?

Ion know why I’m watching this I already know how to work on bikes😂
Liffeee saverrr i just got 3 peice cranks and i had wondered how i would switch them
i know this is old and probably wont get a response but ill try.
i have a Sunday 2019 blueprint complete bmx and it has 8 spline 3 piece cranks but an unsealed spindle and crankset i already know that i need to get sealed spindle when i get sealed bearing but will i need to upgrade my crank or should they work with an 8 spline spindle?
I think you can get an eight spline spindle for it. You’d have to check with the bike shop to make sure, but because it is a brand new bike, they probably use the same cranks on their sealed bearing versions.
hoohoohoblin thanks i just asked my bike shop if they would work and they said yeah they would, nice to know i dont need new cranks cause my sunday cranks are pretty good cause there 3peice 170mm and full chromo
Are these 175 or 155? And if you wanted to change from an 8 spline to 48 can you still use the gear? Like bearings, housing cups n what not?
They are 175 mm cranks. You can put a different sized sprocket on it if you want to.
hoohoohoblin. Went with a Salt + 48 spline.. Good vid man thanks.
Ok so I got the same crankset but the bearing are different. Are the bearing you have from the crankset or separate?
You can buy a sealed bearing conversion kit. That is probably what you need to do. I made another video where I show how to do that.
What was the internal divisions on that bike was it 52mm by any chance
I don't remember, but I know it was American sized. Here is a chart to show you the different types of bottom bracket. www.danscomp.com/serve/products%7Ccharts/bearingchart.htm
I can't get things where the bearings are riding out can I still put the cranks in??
No. You will need to get them out to put the sealed bearings in. On most bikes they are pressed in and you can just pop them out by hitting them from the inside.
Hey um that thing u we're banging out is not poping off my bike do u have any other suggestions?
It should just be pressure fit in, so it should pop out if you hit it hard enough.
Iv been hitin it over the past days don't wanna come off at all
can the sprocket and cranks be different brands?
+Diego Rodriguez Yes.
