WOW!!! As a 58 year old surfer, I can relate to what Thomye is saying. I too, am a goofy footer that is right handed and heavily front footed. Always working on being more of a back footed surfer. Thanks for the great content.

Hell yeah! The legend himself @ThomyeSurfs
Great episode, really fun to listen to. Thomye has being (and still is) a huge inspiration for me, as someone who started surfing at 39yo, since watching other amateur surfers is incredibly useful to me because I feel it's a better comparison when I look for progressing myself.
You can look at pros and retired surfers, but they generally are on a different league. Also Thomye is a super nice guy, he's been really supportive with me and helped me out finding a good board for me (for reference, I'm riding a Sweet Potato). He also experiments a lot with fins and goes through things that sometimes are overlooked by bigger content creators, I highly recommend following with him.
    Best! 🤙

Thomye has been so helpful to me. He always gives me great advice and helps me with boards. What’s great about Thomye is the details and time he puts in to help me with my questions. So happy thomye is getting recognition for one, his surfing abilities in small waves( see his review of the Bobby Quad absolutely amazing) very good small wave surfer. And also getting recognized for the work he does on his channel helping intermediate surfers on a budget like myself who don’t have the bankroll to make $1000 board mistakes. Thank you so much Thomye!

Great video. The first thing we lose is mobility as we get older, second is strength.

Great insight. I did not learn to surf until 30, I am now 60. I'd surf maybe 2 weeks a year until I was 56 and now reside part-time in Mexico, now allowing for 2 months of surf in both spring and fall. Surfing into 60 I find to be very rewarding. That being said, I cannot imagine how difficult it would be if not for committing to a very disciplined dry land training routine. Thanks.

That's awesome! It's not easy learning as an adult. Good to hear that you are finding it rewarding in your 60s!

I've watched your surfing progress over time it's obvious. The best way to improve is through water time.

really interesting content here, thank you... to be honest and giving my opinion ( 30 years surfing) and starting to ride mid lenghts nowadays, i really think that the type of waves you usually surf have a big impact on your opinion. Don`t know if you understand what i am trying to say but the thing is, i ride a ci mi, every single day now and i am a portuguese surfer so, most of the days, i ride beach breaks and my local spot is a point break that , unfortunately, doesn`t work most of the days... but i feel like the ci mid is a blast, it`s 10 liters more than my past shortboards but i can just surf it like a shortboard most of the times, so just can`t agree with the feeling of it being similar to a long board. I ride the sorter one , the 6`6 with 36 liters of volme and i am 1, 70 cm and 68 kg...

Volume has become too much of a focus. The long-term shapers that I have spoken to / heard from, focus less on volume and more on design (length, width, thickness, foil, rocker, outline)
Great interview! - Thomye makes great content for the surfing world.

I have a theory that goofy footers who rip backside aka Caroline Marks, are right handed goofy footers. On the top turn you can throw your dominate/strong shoulder and it looks amazing!

I’m a goofy foot that is right handed, and I kinda agree with your theory, my theory on goofy footed surfers really should be left handed but were pushed by parents or someone as a child to use their right hand as the dominant hand because the world is really made for right handed people

I have a 5’11 dinged up baked potato.
Still rate it as the best small wave board I’ve owned . It keeps getting mentioned in a lot of reviews. The Latest Machadocado to me looks like an attempt to give respect to the Baked Potato
