BTW, HUGE warning. In video he says it'll save the password for encryption in keychain so don't worry about it. I spent 12 hours spenting up a windows VM, i didn't write down the random password it did cause it said it'd save it in a keychain. The very next day I boot it up and it ASKED for that password, it was NOT saved in keychain and 12 hours just gone. Write password down or don't random it is my advice to you.
This! 👆
I wasn't doing VM ware of course but something else. Never trust that the password will be saved to Keychain. 99% of the time it will, but... Bugs.
I made this very mistake last night and now I am out of luck with trying to find the encryption key.
Into the trash the VM goes...
Honestly, the performance of Windows 11 on ARM via Parallels and VMWare fusion just makes me more excited about the new Snapdragon based laptops being announced soon.
Windows on ARM's compatibility layer has gotten so damn good. I remember when you couldn't run *anything* on it, even on Apple's hardware, because the translation layer was too slow or just didn't work.
Me too. Remember SoftPC anyone?! 😂
I've personally noticed that Windows VM's seems snappier in general, so don't feel the ARM bit makes a difference. Hoping I'm wrong on this.
At least it's ARM code and not x86.
FYI: If something x86 doesn't run, try this:
Right click on the executable (.exe)
Properties -> Compatibility -> Change emulation settings
Change "Default" to "Strict execution" or "Very strict execution".
I don't do gaming, but I had to switch to "Strict execution" to get some video editing software to work.
I hope Broadcom doesn't start charging for home use of Fusion an Player. VMware is now owned by Broadcom.
Thanks for the video! I just updated to 13.5.1.
Yep, i try this all the time if the developers don't have ARM-specific version of their software..
However, no matter how much i try this, 3rd-party AV products will not work... as they need kernel access. I think Microsoft really wants users to use to use Windows Defender. I've also heard ClaimAV will work, but haven't tried it.
ZoneAlarm, TrendMicro, AVG.... even MalwareBytes all fail setting to "strict emulation" to try and run installer. And Sophos Connect Client just fails outright..,. Use OpenVPN instead. I think the problem with with a small market on ARM. developers are either slow to act, or more likely just not interested in converting. The bigger bucks are in x86, nor ARM, so they will go where the money is.
I have 10 x64, can you help me?
Didn’t work for fallout :(
@@candycryptid2832 Fusion only runs the ARM version of Windows.
@@SerPapus To save time for other people, are you talking about Fallout 4 or another version?
It's very helpful! Following your video the whole thing went smoothly! Thank you so much!
Wanted to play Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen before Dragon's Dogma 2 release on my Mac mini M2 Pro base (10 core CPU, 16 core GPU, 16 GB RAM) and tried Crossover first but was unhappy with the performance (lots of micro-stutters, some glitches and a non-consistent FPS). Tested using D3DMetal and DXVK and different in-game settings. Now with Fusion, I'm getting a mostly locked 60 fps, settings in high and running at 1440p. Set the VM to 8 cores and 8 GB RAM and the game runs smoothly, mostly locked to 60 fps. There are a few micro stutters when first loading a scene, but is otherwise a better experience for this game - I'm intrigued if others are getting a similar experience
4:37 It’s still good to write it down and keep it for the time of running the virtual machine again. Sometimes VMware likes to ask for this password in order to open the virtual machine for the second time and not saving it in keychain despite the option to do so toggled on.
@andrew tasi , can you do an update video for VMware Fusion as it now asks you to register with Broadcom Customer Support. Once you've registered it seems you have to search through the KB to find out how to install VMware Fusion. Which a really frustrating experience and I'm still trying to work it out.
Can you do a video on this, please?
@Andrew you might be interested to know that you can point your VNWare Steam set up storage to the same location as your CrossOver 24 installation storage and the games can be accessed without reinstalling.
Thank you man!
Amazing video, thanks a lot.
Thanks for this. I use Crossover to launch steam and game on my Macbook Pro but installed VMware Fusion with Windows 11 so that i can update the firmware on the Dualsense (I don't have a PS5 yet).
Were you able to connect the controller? I've been trying to connect a DualShock wirelessly but I can't get it to input to the virtual machine. Or rather, it does but Steam instantly quits when I do so.
Not wirelessly - via USB so that I can firmware upgrade it. Didnt try wireless
@@mobilisinmobili74 Yes, I was able to connect it via usb cable. Didn't try wireless as I was just updating the firmware on the Dualsense.
For those who have the error "time out EFI Network", just click on the VR when you reboot it and spam spacebar to lanch windows before the error appears.
thanks !
Great video. I am a VM beginner so these questions might sound stupid: 1) Is that portion of the RAM permanently allocated to the VM or just when in use (I assume the hard drive space is permanently allocated)? 2. How much hard drive space shall I allocate to the VM to run Windows 11, Office Pro and not much else? Someone says 64GB, some others say no less than 80GB. Thanks!
How different in performance is it to parallels? Would love to see a direct comparison.
Not really representative comparison but I was asking the same question to myself and I've just compared on my own using the game I recently wanted to check out on Mac (original Assassin's Creed from 2007, DX9 version because it performs better).
Mac type: Mini M1 16GB, both VMs have assigned 8GB of RAM and 4 cores. All other apps closed.
Settings: 2.5k resolution, highest graphic settings with medium shadows & details.
Location: first "open-world" in the city.
Parallels 17 (notice not the newest version, rather old one): ~35-50 FPS, rarely freezes.
VMWare Fusion: ~25-40 FPS, sometimes freezes and drops to 15-20 FPS.
So in my test Parallels has better performance, the newest Parallels version probably has even bigger gap. On the other hand, as a *FREE* software, VMWare works really nice. However, if someone has Parallels licence then I stick with it.
What would you recommend as a life longer windows user.. waiting for the new surface 6 or buying MacBook Air m3 with parallels ?!
Thank you!
Is macbook air m1 base suitable for this guide? Are there any machine configuration or Mac OS requirements?
Doew it now allow Bluetooth to connect ... Or at least the VM to read input from Bluetooth controllers connected to the Mac?
awsome tutorial no fuss just information to the point
Thank you for the tutorial. Just in case: your license key is still visible for a few frames before the blur comes in...
Thanks so Much Easyer now
I'm waiting for bootcamp again. hopefully we get it soon because of the new Snapdragon chips powering Windows for ARM laptops
Could you do some testing with NX or solidworks? The m1 is doing fine with normal parts, but has difficult times with free form and assembly’s with over 400 parts ^^
Does it use local files from Mac as well like parallel?
Is this now better than the UTM option? Specifically for graphics? Games would be cool but I'm more worried about being able to run Solidworks for school.
while using parallels i could not run fortnite due to a problem with anti cheat and i also could not run more games like valorent cod and more so does vmware fusion have problems with thoso games or no?
This is great news for me. I picked up a ROG Ally for PC gaming, so I only need Windows for a handful of Windows only productivity and utility software.
Any chance you could do a video on importing a Parallels' VM/VHD into Fusion?
I thought they were incompatible with each other.... You would probably have to covert, rather than import..
When i downloaded insider preview, i used various tools to covert from .VHDX. to .VMDK..
Ideally any pre-configured OS Microsoft makes available, they would always want to learn toward Hyper-V (their own product anyway)
Edit: I gotta go back and take another look at 13...
Thanks for the tutorial! Could you show how to run older games like Fallout New Vegas? Thanks!
Any idea how the performance of this free VMware Fusion 13.5.1 player compares with Parallels, please? I would love a benchmark or two.
Agreed, came to ask the same question
None as regular usrs, most of them are asking such questions..
Loved It
super-helpful
might aswell perform games benchmark between vmware and parallels andrew, attracts lot of traffic
Excellent
Can this run Autodesk Inventor with 3D hardware acceleration ?
What i cant fix is the mouse camera isnt working properly in the games. Its an ol dx9 mmo game tho, when i hold right mouse to change camera it goes all the way up or all the way down.
Any idea how to fix it? I tried different mouse profiles in vmware settings
andrew when even i open my vmware, and press play it says that -14 pipe has been broken transport. So i dont know what to do can u help me out please
thank u 👍
Do you happen to have any fix for UA-cam mini stutters on all browsers with VM ware???🙏
Help I dont have the wifi shortcut option in the bottom right of my windows screen and when i search something up it takes forever to load
What do you think about UTM? Is better?????
Can I expand the virtual disk that was setup with 64GB size after the VM was installed and completed?
amazing video it worked for me but how I am struggling now is to upgrade the spec of the vm iv done all in the settings but when restarting the vm its still set up with the same number of cores, ram and hd iv seen the unallocated space but the option to claim it with the c drive is grey.. if you could drop a video explaining how this can be resolved that would help greatly regardless keep doing what your doing bless up..
Hey, we need updated video after vmware was sold unlucky.
I am currently using windows with UTM , will it be any better if I run on VmWare ?
@@hydepark1382 Yeah, I only use Keil Microvision sometimes which works totally fine.
@@hydepark1382as i understand i thought acceleration was mostly too games. not the OS.
I couldn't see any different with or without it.
When I try to go to the eval page, I get a blank page with a button for Cookie Settings. I can't get by this page. I tried with Firefox, Brave, Chrome and Safari.
When you run Windows like this, does it work fine if you have a dock with mouse etc connected on extra ports, and especially... if you have an external display connected on the dock via miniDP for example? edit: I guess yes since you are still within macOS. For Linux Asahi though I think we need to wait for the external display over USB C.
I've connected 32GB flash drives to Widows 11 (VMware) and works just fine.
Will it be faster than UTM on MBA M1 8gb in normal tasks like browsing web, office apps, and some other unsupported apps?
I've used Windows 11 native on UTM and VMware 13.5.1 on my M1, and both are about as fast as each other, because there running natively.
UTM does boot slightly faster though. (cold boot), but nothing to cheer about.
I’m using the same laptop but it says “sha1 validation failed for the downloaded file”. I need help.
I am unable to use any USB connected to my mac. Is there a fix, or something I might be doing wrong?
What are the major games that work on VMWare Fusion that aren’t available on CrossOver?
For example world of warships does run through vmware fusion but not through crossover. I assume its the same for the other wargaming titles like world of tanks.
@@Superbus753 Those games are both available on MacOS though. Why would you run them on virtualization or translation software?
@@destructodisk9074 world of warships isnt supportet on mac since 2022 and doesnt run natively anymore
@@destructodisk9074you have to buy them ?? Just thinking.. If you already have Windows games, why buy Mac version of the same game if there are options available... (abiet performance loss), but still fully functional under PortingKit, CrossOver etc.
Its easier to get games working under Windows than it is under others... or for those that just don't want to figure stuff out... like me,
Assassins Creed Unity and Dragon Age Inquisition. Latest games won’t run on Fusion since it doesn’t support DirectX12 yet
I tried this and there is input lag, any fix?
Will this work on base model Macbook Air M1 with only 8 GB of RAM?
I bought the 15 inch MacBook Air a week ago and one of the first things I did was download this. Very easy to set up and it’s free
Hi, can you tell me the performance you get from it ? i mean i already used parallels and it was decent what about this? (i want to play some very light pc games)
@@DimitrisAravopoulos I haven’t played much in Windows but I will say the performance is very good. If you can list a few free games I can try to run them :)
Considering the specs I’d say it can run Titanfall 2 pretty well considering it’s running through both virtualisation and translation
@@Zomboy4313 my main concern is wow private servers, I will be downloading it now thanks in advance!
@@DimitrisAravopoulos Glad I could help
Its good to see VMware is *finally* getting it together. Took them 2 years to have the MS check, but better late than never. They claimed the hold up was due to VMware licensing with Microsoft. but i reckon the better explanation is they were busy with Linux support first as well. Vmware as a company is quite small which surprised me, knowing they also do ESXi. That's the kind of businessss you'd actually "want" more employees, not less.
It doesn't make sense Parallels got this within (1) year 2020 of M1 release and working 100% perfectly, while Vmware even today is still lacking shared folder support.. Its got 3D acceleration, but that's about it for this update... Not much to be happy about as the main issue is still missing.
well, pretty soon, you won't need all these virtual vms for gaming at least, Asahi Linux finally got latest OpenGL fully working and pretty soon there will be Vulkan support (which means Steam Proton, which means your macbook will become portable steam deck).
How fast is the ethernet speed in this compared to parallels?
Just like Bootcamp days. Thank goodness.
i have question, what would you recommend parallels or VMWare Fushion, my macbook is A2141 intel processor
If Intel chip then why not using bootcamp
Can you make a video to make other games launch? I couldn’t get fallout new Vegas and or fallout 4 to run on it
its hard to run new vegas without mods. search up viva new vegas.

If I connect a external hard drive would the windows detect it??
I wonder how much better tiny11 arm performs in comparison 🤔
Hopefully, we can install Windows arm natively on arm Macs one day
Apple has to write and pay for signed drivers for that. And they won't do It.
Microsoft has to enable end-users to purchase Windows 11 ARM licenses like we do with x86-64 PCs. They won't do it as they only sell that license to manufacturers. And they have an exclusivity deal with Snapdragon, too.
It's been four full years since the first M1 and we are still waiting for any of them to do something about it.
if u plug an external device such as a micro sd card will it be read by default in the virtual machine?
You have to pass it trough
@@lucianistoc1264 how?

Is the performance similiar to Parralels on Gaming mode?
I dunno, but i'd assume its better in Parallels *because* it has a gaming mode... I suppose you could play around with the vM settings in Fusion, but knowing Paralles has better improvements by at least a year, tells you something.

How do you backup your virtual machine for safe keeping in case you mess something up down the line?
aim running parallels on my Mac and haven't ran fusion yet, but generally on hypervisors (parallels and VMware fusion are what is known as hypervisors) you run what is called a snapshot. It's a way to quickly just go back to a previous state.
You typically can set up automatic snapshots and you should look into deleting older ones over time, but VM's are great for being able to go back to previous states super easy. I would just google "how to do a snapshot on VMware fusion/parallels" or even UA-cam it and you'll have a shit ton sources.
