Colors + background-blur ► DSLR, Sharpness ► 4K camcorder!!!!!!!!!! The audio of the DSLR is a bit noisier, but it is not as filtered as on the camcorder. Filtration eliminates certain wanted and unwanted sounds! Overall... camcorder!
Holly cow... I'm surprised by the amount of people saying cannon.. the Panasonic does have more of a washed out color feel, but it's SOOOO crisp. and the audio is obviously superior. I assume you could color correct the Panasonic to have more pop to it.... it has a Raw footage kinda feel... I Assume the Panasonic also has a better auto focus system but you weren't really moving it around much. the only think I liked more about the 70D was that the depth of field was lower and in certain situations it looks cooler to have things more out of focus in the background. what did you end up going with?
+Chad Harrington The Canon has a more advanced autofocus system, the AF tracking on the 70d is known for being great. I think they both have pros and cons, if the camcorder had a larger sensor size it would be perfect. I still own both but my videos (since this video) have been done with the Panasonic as I find it has less Moire issues when I film screens.
the canon may appeal to some because of the in camera processing... to me, most of the 70D footage looked good because it had a little too much contrast and colour saturation... whilst that may be ok for home video, it does create problems in post if you want to make a more serious production coz it's easier to add than subtract and you cant really fix over contrast or saturation... the clear winner here is the Panasonic... good neutral colours even if they oddly do seem a little dry... if you look at the 70D a bit more you'll now see where the contrast is helping to deceive the eye, making it look a fuller picture but losing slight detail everywhere because of it... even at 1080p on the Pana i cant see it being that contrasty.
The Tech Chap TV yep, flat... sorry i started in audio years ago and just can't seem to shake off the "dry" instead of "flat" term... and i'm surprised the Pana is as flat as it looks coz usually i find Pana to lean on a slightly enhanced look.
I tried the 4K UA-cam settings and the whole thing just slowed to a crawl. I was thinking of getting a 4K camera but looking at the output I think your Canon 70D gives a much sharper image. The Panasonic looked washed out. Thanks for the video. Very useful and informative. Subbed.
That's because he appears to be using the Standard picture profile on the DSLR. Had he used Pro Lost settings, (Neutral with filters like sharpness turned off), the camera would have recorded much more latitude (less contrast, more matching the camcorder).
Buy the right camera for what type of events you will be shooting. Don't let your talent see you stop the action because your dslr over heats. Be professional.
Indoor, it is different what is Best. Outdoor, the Panasonic camcorder is really much better than the Canon DSLR camera. Canon DSLR Outdoor video is really bad.
The Colour: The Panasonic camcorder one definitely looked more natural in the colours even though it needed a little more contrast, while the Canon DSLR looked a little unnatural in colour, which pops out, looks cleaner and a little dramatic creating point of interest. Basically, Panasonic beats Canon for the white balance accuracy, while Canon beats Panasonic for the interesting, looked-nice popping out colour. The Image: Definitely the Panasonic camcorder has much better details, and even if you downscaled it to 720 it will still look much better compared to the Canon DSLR. If I'm going to buy one of those for video, I would choose the Panasonic one, because it has great image detail and better built-in microphone. Not too big in size too, so it could come in handy when traveling or hanging out with friends. However, if you want to take good photos and didn't mind the size and weight, DSLR might be a better choice. The camcorder can only take 8.2MP (4K) photos, I think a high-end phone could beat that (in terms of resolution and quality).
yea the 4k camcorder was alot more sharper when you did the two comparisons.. but even if they were both 4k one has a purpose and the other has another, the right tool for the right job.
+The Tech Chap TV ,thanks for getting back to me brov, am looking at a budget of between 1000 to 1500 euros as am living in europe and also want to buy on credit and pay back monthly, stretching the budget to 2000 euro can be possible, but if i can get a cheaper one below 1500 euro will be convenent for me, what is important is picture qualities, i was looking at the LEGRIA HF G30, which is about 1100 euro now then i saw Canon VIXIA HF G40, which is about 1300e, then i also was looking at the sony Fdr-ax100 which more costly at 1 889,00, i have also just look up the Sony AX53 and it seems powerful and price very considerate,so which will you prefer to last for another 2 years for me in all ramification to slandered music video, as i also hope to be shorting music videos for other artist as well, thanks brov
Great video. DSLR's seem to struggle with auto focus a lot. I have the Canon 750D but I am not happy and thinking of getting a camcorder. This particular camcorder 👉 Auto Focus issues? Thanks
So did you get the camcorer? :D I'm looking for an upgrade but I will probably pick the 4k-capable (probably Panasonic GH4) DSLR for more professional videos :)
TechLineHD Unfortunately my resources are limited so I guess I will have to spend carefully. Unfortunately I am not a full time tech reviewer like you, would love to one day lol, so budget is limited 😢
I think the Panasonic wants more light, but it has definitely better piture quality because of 4k. The settings were quite different, for example the white balance was not correctly set, it was blue-ish on Canon here : 5:25 . And you can play with ISO and aperture and exposure also, hard to find the common basic settings, to compare them. By the way video cameras are better for video, undisputed, even in these static, not so moving scenes above. When the sensor is smaller then more light needed thats all. Good comparison btw, I like it.
What lens did you use on the 70d with you at the desk? Great video. I'm trying to figure out if I should get a Canon HF R82 to go with my Canon t3i. Lot's of fooling around with a dslr with lens and settings, whereas with the camcorder one has a lot less to fool around with. I know many dedicated filimographers won't like the term "fooling around"
When I adjusted the UA-cam up to 4k, it kept freezing and cycling; when I lowered it to 1080 HD, it played normally. The images looked fine with both cameras. The sound on the Canon was more sensitive, and could pick up more sound from the background, but that just made the video more noisy. Do they both have image stabilization? I also like to have a head strap and chest strap so I don't have to carry a camera in my outstretched arm ~ can either of them do that? I'm looking to see if there is anything better than the Sony FDR X3000R.....can only afford to buy 1.
Panasonic camcorders image is much softer and the color are flat, you can "repair" this in post, but then the rendering...it takes some time. The DSLR has much more vivid colors and greater depth of field, but i little more noise on the darker sports. Tough choice really. So maybe a Sony or the Canon XC 10. I don't know :)
Panasonic has a soft tone. Canon more contrast. When you were looking at monitor.. panasonic in focus and sharp. Canon.. focus was on monitor and your face was out of focus.. but settings can be adjusted. In some outdoor scenes the Canon look like crap.. almost out of focus a bit. I would use both depending on what your doing. Panasonic.. great for on the fly shooting\in the field, nothing really to tweak. The Canon would require a bit of setting adjustments to get the images looking sharper and just right. And i guess depends what lens your using on the Canon.
Answer is really simple at least to me when filming with out a camera guy/ girl. I own a Cannon DSLR and a few Digital cameras and two jvc quads. If I am filming something with out the help of a camera guy - do you really want to stop what your doing every 29 minutes or so and hit the record button?? I plan on doing some Arborist videos in the short future from now and can't seem to get a family member wanting to shot the video, so I enlisted the help of jvc's which can shot continuous 4 to 5 hours straight video; while I like the picture quality of the connon better it shuts off 29 minutes. The jvcs do stop at 30 mins but auto restart by themselves
I can see why some people are saying the Canon gave a clearer picture but I thought the Panasonic looked a little more natural (or how my eyes see the world). Both were good. I think there may have been a difference in the settings in regards to white balance or contrast between the two. Thanks for the vieo.
This 4K camera make 1080p looks like 480p format, you have much more details in 4K, very crisp image even watching in 1080 display. Great video! Thanks
Regarding auto focus on DSLR: get the camera to auto focus by pressing the button slightly while AF is on, then turn AF off on the lens. This stops it from trying to autofocus while you are filming 😀
I don't know how anyone can say the Canon 70D looked better. Watching this on a retina display side by side made the Canon look like 480p. What I do like about the Canon is that it produced more vibrant color and the classic DSLR depth of field. But the Panasonic had much better video quality and much better sound quality (not that it matters since you'd ideally use an external mic). Edge goes to the Panasonic since you can mess with the color in post, but you can't get better quality. Canon is better for still photography in most cases, Panasonic has a clear edge in video.
Due to UA-cam compression and since you don't begin to use tools such as a resolution and colorimetry chart it really is not possible to compare things and it is not possible to show native 4K quality on UA-cam anyway...
Cool, your video idea is good and many that I seem to encounter are caught up in marketers "sale speak" regarding a lot of specifications that aren't relevant for most applications. Video bloggers for instance should be most concerned with their audio and their camera stability before they start trying to "play" engineer...
The camcorder certainly looks sharper. To me, the DSLR seems to over-saturate the colors while the camcorder looks more true to nature. "Ideal image" is more subjective than we like to believe--like food, we all have different "tastes". My vision favors less saturation and less contrast so what is appealing to me is probably borderline crap to someone else.
Thank you very much. This is exactly the question I was asking: do I splash out on the latest non professional 4k handheld cameras or go for a professional DSLR for about the same price. I will definitely be sticking with DSLR after watching this. Thanks
Default picture style on the Canon? You can get a flatter profile that would more closely resemble the Panasonic in terms of contrast. Only other thing that stands out to me is more depth of field on the Panasonic due to the super tiny sensor.
Have you found any DSLRs with good stabilization? I'm doing a UA-cam series on a sailboat, so that is important, but I'd also like a sharp/clear image as well as the ability to take photographs now and then. Budget is probably $1,000 or under.
More than 18 months have passed by now (May, 2017) and Canon has the 80D out since March 2016 so a lot has changed since then but no 4k in the 80d. And wasn't the VX870 updated by the VX981? However, I found that this 70D footage was clearer and more colourful than the VX870 which looked very flat and dull by comparison. But only watching on a PC monitor and not a UHD TV.
Hey, what settings did you use on the Panasonic? What shutter speed and is it possible to change the record Framerate or is it just fixed at 30? What about other settings? I have this same camera and just trying to get some tips for shooting good quality. Did you use any sort of gaffing or was this all just raw camera footage? What are the most important settings to get professional quality video?
Hi! Like your demo...so far I am still using my Canon 70d for my indie film project for international video film competition. I am so happy on it than any other DSLR or camcorder.
On this video the Panasonic look clearer and sharper. However, I use a canon 650 for video and am pretty impressed with the overall sharpness. Did you mention what lens you were using on the canon. That can make a difference.
+The Tech Chap TV currently i am starting my youtube channel, i have a logitech HD webcam 920 for Skype interviews and have just bought an eBay ixus 220 hs. Plus a zoom H1!!
+alan Jones Cool okay! For a camcorder i'd recommend waiting a month and taking a look at this: www.amazon.co.uk/Sony-HDR-CX625-Camcorder-Balanced-SteadyShot/dp/B01B5TELBI/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&qid=1455640340&sr=8-7&keywords=sony+camcorder
+The Tech Chap TV Ok thank you. it doesn't seem to have a hot shoe? Sorry just read that it has a "Accessory Shoe (Multi Interface Shoe)" So i can fit an external mic onto that?
I think audio is often overlooked. The background hiss of the DSLR reveals a pretty terrible preamp. Much better sound on the camcorder as it's designed for video capture. I feel that mid level camcorders have fallen out of fashion these days, which is a bit of a shame as for many people who shoot video for platforms like UA-cam they would be better served by a camcorder.
***** what is your budget? For around $500US the Panasonic HC-V770 has a good reputation. But the more you spend the better you will get obviously. I know the Sonys are well thought of once you get into $1000+ territory.
***** that's understandable. Have a look at the Panasonic or maybe the Sony CX625, which has a very good stabilisation system. If you can't afford either of those I know Canon has some decent cheaper options, but stay away from anything with a crazy long zoom as this will mean smaller sensor/poorer image quality. Good luck!
first thank you very much for this interesting informative video..but the questions are: - which lens did you use with the canon 70d? - if you change the lens for better one do you think the result will be the same? or vice versa? am I right?
I think the color presets are going to make people like the Canon more, but it seems that the Panny is a bit more agile in its image processing. I'd say unless you're doing studio work, go with the Panny (or high-end camcorder). It'll just make life oh so simple.
CHAD, please help me. I record my kids soccer games and I loooove the clear quality of the 4k but is it necessary? i want to send the clearest vids to the colleges so what is my best bet? sony ax53, sony ax33 or canon vixia xf r72? I love the idea of having a back up hard drive in case my sd card gets full. Please tell me what to buy, i'm so stumped!!! ahhhhh!
Cannon seems to have a lot less warmth than the Panasonic. The colors on the 70D look a lot more vibrant though; tough choice. I'm thinking of getting a 70D, but after this I'm having second thoughts. Great video!
Good comparison video - shame I don't have a 4K monitor/TV for a more realistic view. BTW, at 5:41 you can clearly see your(?) fingerprint. I don't want to sound paranoid, but considering it's something that can't be changed, I'd think twice about showing it.
+AK11020 Thanks very much. True I only viewed/edited the video on a 1440p monitor! I think you may be paranoid about that. Or if you're right - I'm in trouble :P
At the moment I have a bridge camera that takes very good pictures but only 720p video that is full of grain. I am looking for a camcorder to shoot 1080p and can handle low light better, like outside on a overcast day. Also I shoot videos indoors which is probably more of the time. My budget is £250 tops. Any ideas what I should get? I can edit 4K but do not have a 4K monitor. So 1080, 60 is fine.
+TheDutyPaid Hi! Okay sure we'll I've done a little research and I think the Sony HDR-PJ410 camcorder would be a great option: www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00REMCYRY/?tag=techchap-21 It's under your budget and can shoot 1080p50 (that's what we get living in a PAL region!). Hope that helps!
The Tech Chap TV Thanks for the reply, one I am looking at is the Canon Legria HF R66 www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/4278285.htm#pdpFullProductInformation With the cash back, comes out a pound cheaper. I know that even with a better camera does not mean more people will watch my videos. I just want to be happy with what I do.
+Casey Colbert (LCbiking) Photo cameras might have much larger sensors, better quality, more background-blur, better low-light performance, less noise...
wow great I have the Canon xha1s videocamera can you make a review of this camera, and the differences between canonn XHa1S AND Sony HD professional video camera ? in other words i should sell my xha1s to get a Sony HD prosumer videocamera ?
it's unlikely I'll be able to get a review sample of those cameras for a thorough testing i'm afraid - I'd probably just google reviews for each and see which sounds better :)
I'd say it's hard to tell to be honest. Defo more detail on the Panasonic being 4k but for one should have shot with similar focal lengths if possible or at least try to get framing similar. You appear further away in the canon as it's a wider FOV so would have been better if u moved the canon closer so you filled the frame a bit more like in the Panasonic. Secondly would be good to colour match the footage. The canon has way more contrast than the Panasonic so should have reduced the contrast in the canon picture profile and also turned off all in camera sharpening in both cameras.
WOA! The Panasonic defeated the the Canon in that S6 photo/video shot. See how nasty/artificial the colours look on the Canon. The colours on the panasonic look far more natural.
Auto focus and image stabilization continue to be DSLR drawbacks for video work. Dslr's good for static shots on tripods - interviews, etc. - but be prepared to slap on an 16-18MM lens if you attempt to do much walking. The Panasonic OIS Hybrid is a superior image stabilization system. If you are videoing action sports such as football, with a DSLR, get behind the goalpost and don't move. 70d may be fast focusing for a DSLR but it depends on the lens and is not as fast as the Panasonic. Under proper lighting, the Panasonic delivers rich colors with less contrast but neutral is good for Lumetri color grading in PP CC 2017 post - unless of course you like that unprocessed washed-out instagram look.
The audio on the Panasonic is much better than Canon. I can see a difference in video quality, I'm not really aware of the terms being used but the Panasonic gives brighter video quality than the Canon and it seems to focus better tha the Canon also when u so the clip of the Samsung device. As I said I'm not to educated in the area of quality terms but that is what I have observed. If I'm wrong in any way please let me know so I can understand. Thank you. Great video!
DSLR seems to put out too much blue hue, whereas the camcoder has more even colors. Both on 1080p would have been a fairer comparison, but not sure that would change the blue saturation.
I like both, but the Canon does give more natural lighting. And don't get up hyped up on 4k. It's not that much better compared to 1080p unless you are watching on a very, very large screen. A 27 inch 1080p monitor is considered retina at a viewing distance of just 3.5 ft away and further. And the recommended viewing distance of such a monitor is 4 ft away. And a 22 inch monitor is retina to a distance of 2.8 ft and further back. Yes when we go to the store like Best Buy, we can see the pixels that make up the image on the screen. But then again, who stands 2ft from their screen at home looking for pixels like we do in a retail store. In reality, we tend to sit 8 ~ 10ft away from our 55 inch 1080p flat screen. Plus the 4K screens at the store tend to run on a different demo compared to the other TV's to try and purposely make them look better. Same goes for PC monitors.
I have the VX-870M (Pal 25/50fps.version) ..... I've had a year with it, comparing 4k videos to 4K downscaled etc. and I'm convinced that the 4K is way better when viewed on a large (65" or bigger) TV. ....it becomes less noticeable on smaller TV Monitors ..... I can read the info on your monitor when Panny 4K is on ....but not with Canon 1080p.
+SpotNFlo Sure - i think that may be a little to do with the depth of field on the canon, since the background is more blurred than the Panny. I still use the VX-870 for every video I make i'm really impressed with it.
I would definitely go with the DSLR so many more options and the color difference is huge! Color is everything! I don't care about mics a mic is a separate purchase.
4k is a bit much for my system to handle as far as watching the video. 1080p seems to run flawlessly. Of course this is an old system I am watching it on and still runs Windows XP.
Well, you talked me out of using a camcorder for stills and video. Even though your 70d has an APS-C sensor, it's way better than the camcorder. Thanks for saving me a lot of trouble!
hi great video thanks for posting it, I will also like to ask you a question, what better image quality a xha1canon pro vodeocamera or a Sony pro videocamera ?
I have noticed that camcorders somehow reduce the colors and the image is not sharp enough. Unless you not buy a professional high quality camcorder such JVC 200 or 300. Contrast,brighness,sensors,processors.. all have impact at overall image/video quaility not just the resolution.
Looks like lower contrast to me, not sharpness. If you look at his monitor, the 4K camcorder is actually quite a bit sharper. You can almost read the tiny text on the monitor, whereas it's basically a blur on the 1080p Canon. Contrast can always be fixed in post-production, but you can't get 4K resolution from an upscaled 1080p image.
basscadet75 I am very curious how can be fixed color reduction and lack of contrast via post process. How can make the colors vibrant via post process? Because my digital camcorder doesnt have good contrast and have the habbit to reduce the colors. Dark blue is detected as black by the camera. My mini DV casette camcorder doesnt have such problem. The colors are much better but i dont want to struggle with cassetes in the digital world.
Thanks for your expertise...visually makes sense 4K vs 1080. I'll be making guitar tutorials. What is also important to me is sound quality . Also the ability to record in split screen i.e. my hands, feet & filming from a distance. I assume more than one camera is needed for this? (this could be a duh! question! lol Plugging direct from my PA system to the camera also is exactly what i'm looking for.
An excellent video and very nice presentation. It makes sense to stick to 4K ecording because sooner or later, everyone will have 4K screens and then 1080P videos will look grainy. However, in your presentation, video from Panasonic 4K looks a bit bit smokey. The video from Canon 70D looks brighter and crispier (with a slightly more blueish shade in white color.According you to your opinion, shall I buy a 4K camcorder or a DSLR? And yes: My main aim is to be able to make memorable and professional looking videos (just like in movies) with nice audio. Thanks.
+V Mann Thank you very much - kind of you to say :). 4K certainly is the future, I suppose the issue is the expense of getting the equipment to record/edit/watch it. The panasonic does seem less crisp, and yet somehow..more detailed in some shots. It's weird heh
I have an LG HD 1080p (1920x1080) pc monitor and 5.1 surround sound. It sounded like you were giving more accolades to the Panasonic, but I hear and see a better picture with your Canon.
I am looking for a good camera for doing vlogs and UA-cam videos. DSLR's are out of my price range so I found that Camcoders are a great option for good audio and fairly good picture. I am considering getting the Canon Vixia HF R700, it is a camcoder with great reviews.
I need the video nerds and gods to appear and provide this peasant with info. I'm looking to record video in 4k at 60fps. I plan on doing this indoors as I will be making guitar videos. I'd like to have something that has a flip/swivel screen so that I can see myself as I record (was going to do Yi 4k+ but you can't see yourself). Any suggestions?
Part of your consideration should also be any take longer than 29'30" forces you into a camcorder. Not to mention overheating issues. This seems to be the white elephant in the room for all UT vloggers.
I find the images coming from the Canon 70D to be much better than the 4K images coming from the Panasonic, even if the Panasonic offers slightly more detail. The brighter, richer image coming from the Canon might have something to do with the fact that the Canon has a much larger image sensor.
Dslr is better for some art work. It keeps more precise information about lights and shadows on the object you shot, so you can color grade the image and get more interesting result. And of course, you can do more interesting things with your dslr lenses. Camcoder has the soft image, less lights and shadows, but its also do the great job if all that you want is to save your time and get the good result. It's not about better device, image or something like that. It's always about better solution for your needs. They both are good devices for video recording.
try recording a low light school play with a dslr......ugh!! i hope camcorders never die out. the ability to autofocus and keep everything in focus is more important than anything else. what good is a better image if it's out of focus.
Forget about different cameras. Lighting is what seems to be lacking. Learn lighting techniques and b oth cameras will produce great images.
Contrary to logic...
The Canon actually has more contrast and more color saturation.?
But the Smoother look of the Panasonic is more flattering.
+William Gabbert yeah I think you're right, the canon is certainly sharper and has a higher contrast
Colors + background-blur ► DSLR,
Sharpness ► 4K camcorder!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks for the reply!
the canon may appeal to some because of the in camera processing... to me, most of the 70D footage looked good because it had a little too much contrast and colour saturation... whilst that may be ok for home video, it does create problems in post if you want to make a more serious production coz it's easier to add than subtract and you cant really fix over contrast or saturation... the clear winner here is the Panasonic... good neutral colours even if they oddly do seem a little dry... if you look at the 70D a bit more you'll now see where the contrast is helping to deceive the eye, making it look a fuller picture but losing slight detail everywhere because of it... even at 1080p on the Pana i cant see it being that contrasty.
+AVportau I agree with you. Re the panasonic, I think the best way of describing it is a little 'flat'. What do you think?
The Tech Chap TV yep, flat... sorry i started in audio years ago and just can't seem to shake off the "dry" instead of "flat" term... and i'm surprised the Pana is as flat as it looks coz usually i find Pana to lean on a slightly enhanced look.
I tried the 4K UA-cam settings and the whole thing just slowed to a crawl. I was thinking of getting a 4K camera but looking at the output I think your Canon 70D gives a much sharper image. The Panasonic looked washed out. Thanks for the video. Very useful and informative. Subbed.
I have a question, wouldnt taking constant videos on dslr wear the parts out faster compared to a video camera when thats its m.o
Canon has better contrast while the Panasonic looks much sharper. Blurry canon ? ?
probably just looks blurry when compared with the 4K.. a lot more resolution you know.
I find that Canons are softer then others, like for example Nikon.
you just need color correction
That's because he appears to be using the Standard picture profile on the DSLR. Had he used Pro Lost settings, (Neutral with filters like sharpness turned off), the camera would have recorded much more latitude (less contrast, more matching the camcorder).
The panasonic renders a bit softer image which would lend it'self best to cinematic work.
Buy the right camera for what type of events you will be shooting. Don't let your talent see you stop the action because your dslr over heats. Be professional.
+Snowvdo yep - whatever helps you tell your story better :)
You never said what lens you are using. That accounts for more than half of image quality at any given time.
A bigger sensor doesn't mean anything here. Colours, stabilisation, focus, sound recording and usability are also important factors.
Indoor, it is different what is Best.
Outdoor, the Panasonic camcorder is really much better than the Canon DSLR camera.
Canon DSLR Outdoor video is really bad.
The Colour:
The Panasonic camcorder one definitely looked more natural in the colours even though it needed a little more contrast, while the Canon DSLR looked a little unnatural in colour, which pops out, looks cleaner and a little dramatic creating point of interest. Basically, Panasonic beats Canon for the white balance accuracy, while Canon beats Panasonic for the interesting, looked-nice popping out colour.
The Image:
Definitely the Panasonic camcorder has much better details, and even if you downscaled it to 720 it will still look much better compared to the Canon DSLR.
The Canon has a clearer and more realistic colour, but the Panasonic has better audio. This is a toss up, but I give it to the Canon.
If you're even slightly serious about video making, would you use in camera mic anyway...
yea the 4k camcorder was alot more sharper when you did the two comparisons.. but even if they were both 4k one has a purpose and the other has another, the right tool for the right job.
which camcorder will you prescribe for professional music video as i prefer camcorder to dslr, thanks
what sort of budget do you have? the upcoming Sony AX53 looks good (out March 21st)
+The Tech Chap TV ,thanks for getting back to me brov, am looking at a budget of between 1000 to 1500 euros as am living in europe and also want to buy on credit and pay back monthly, stretching the budget to 2000 euro can be possible, but if i can get a cheaper one below 1500 euro will be convenent for me, what is important is picture qualities, i was looking at the LEGRIA HF G30, which is about 1100 euro now then i saw Canon VIXIA HF G40, which is about 1300e, then i also was looking at the sony Fdr-ax100 which more costly at 1 889,00, i have also just look up the Sony AX53 and it seems powerful and price very considerate,so which will you prefer to last for another 2 years for me in all ramification to slandered music video, as i also hope to be shorting music videos for other artist as well,
thanks brov
Great video. DSLR's seem to struggle with auto focus a lot. I have the Canon 750D but I am not happy and thinking of getting a camcorder. This particular camcorder 👉 Auto Focus issues? Thanks
this camcorder has no auto focus issues at all - it's great.
The Tech Chap TV Thanks buddy and your feedback is much appreciated. Cheers 😜 subbed
+J TheAndroidFreak I see :) I will probably go with Panasonic gh4 DSLR
Check out the Sony FDR-AX53
Perfect! This is exactly the kind of review I was looking for. It was good to see a side by side. Thank you so much!
+Hodgepodge you're welcome! :)
Lukáš Helcl I do like the vivid colors of the DSLR.
Ideally you want to shoot a flat picture profile with a DSLR and then color correct / apply luts in post
Camera doesn't matter if you have awful lighting, bad lighting makes your videos look much worse than using a bad camera
this is very true!
To be fair, having the same lighting and showing people what to expect outside of "ideal conditions" does help.
Great job with this video. Very nice and clear comparison. It is much easier in this way to spot advantages and flows of any choice.
+mmuzdeka glad you liked it :)
I can see why some people are saying the Canon gave a clearer picture but I thought the Panasonic looked a little more natural (or how my eyes see the world). Both were good. I think there may have been a difference in the settings in regards to white balance or contrast between the two. Thanks for the vieo.
I like when the pic is side by side bc when you slightly cross your eyes you get a 3d image in the middle.
camcorder will never die out! its the best .
Yes it will.
+CaptainXD I would agree, Captain! :)
Due to UA-cam compression and since you don't begin to use tools such as a resolution and colorimetry chart it really is not possible to compare things and it is not possible to show native 4K quality on UA-cam anyway...
this is true - i'll do a more advanced technical comparison in the future
Cool, your video idea is good and many that I seem to encounter are caught up in marketers "sale speak" regarding a lot of specifications that aren't relevant for most applications. Video bloggers for instance should be most concerned with their audio and their camera stability before they start trying to "play" engineer...
To me the Canon looks the best all the way and i didn't mind the sound so much - seemed better than the Sony
Panasonic* :P
Thanks for the catch
The camcorder certainly looks sharper. To me, the DSLR seems to over-saturate the colors while the camcorder looks more true to nature. "Ideal image" is more subjective than we like to believe--like food, we all have different "tastes". My vision favors less saturation and less contrast so what is appealing to me is probably borderline crap to someone else.
Thank you very much. This is exactly the question I was asking: do I splash out on the latest non professional 4k handheld cameras or go for a professional DSLR for about the same price. I will definitely be sticking with DSLR after watching this. Thanks
It look like you have filters on the cannon footage
+JwillMusicc it does a bit, it looks unnaturally contrasty. I haven't edited the footage at all though
Default picture style on the Canon? You can get a flatter profile that would more closely resemble the Panasonic in terms of contrast. Only other thing that stands out to me is more depth of field on the Panasonic due to the super tiny sensor.
hi do you know if the panasonic has a clean hdmi output?? looking to use it for live streaming? thanks
Have you found any DSLRs with good stabilization? I'm doing a UA-cam series on a sailboat, so that is important, but I'd also like a sharp/clear image as well as the ability to take photographs now and then. Budget is probably $1,000 or under.
What program do you use to edit videos??
What are the most important settings to get professional quality video?
awesome video I have the 70d and I love the footage you have there as well but I think the audio of the Panasonic was better hmmm
+SamoreLoveTV Ya but you will want an external mic anyway
I'd day the Canon 70D has the more crisper sort of sharpness to it. But it depends on your budget and what you are going to use it mainly for.
+Pommy192 Would agree with you there, though i'm sort of leaning towards the more 'pleasant' looking Panny :/
Great video.
The panasonic really holds it's own as a camcorder.
Are there any other camcorders very competitive to the panasonic?
Hi! Like your demo...so far I am still using my Canon 70d for my indie film project for international video film competition. I am so happy on it than any other DSLR or camcorder.
+Gilbert Llantino Glad you liked it. I'm a big fan on the 70D :)
Very Helpful
On this video the Panasonic look clearer and sharper. However, I use a canon 650 for video and am pretty impressed with the overall sharpness. Did you mention what lens you were using on the canon. That can make a difference.
How'about panasonic bridge camera type Fz2500. They say it focus on video quality. How about video stabilizer when use handheld waking? Need a help
When saving the video footage on your computer, 30mins video film. Who takes more storage in (mb, gb), camcorder or dslr?
thank you for posting, can you recommend a full HD camcorder with external mic input please?
+alan Jones Sure, what country do you live in?
+The Tech Chap TV UK! I'm on the northern part of the other island
Good luck!
***** you're welcome 👊🏼📹
first thank you very much for this interesting informative video..but the questions are:
- which lens did you use with the canon 70d?
- if you change the lens for better one do you think the result will be the same? or vice versa? am I right?
great video comparison as always . probably prefer the canon as appears to have more vibrant colours whereas the Panasonic appears much more neutral
+ryanspianoaccount Thanks Ryan - they do definitely offer a very different 'look' so it's interesting to know which people prefer.
1080p looks wayyyyy better. I’m watching on my 55” 4k tv and the 1080p video looks better.
Thank you for this video. Greatly the work you put in to make this. Very Informational. :D
The only difference I see is just that one is brighter than the other so not much difference.
Okay sure we'll I've done a little research and I think the Sony HDR-PJ410 camcorder would be a great option: www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00REMCYRY/?tag=techchap-21
It's under your budget and can shoot 1080p50 (that's what we get living in a PAL region!). Hope that helps!
The Tech Chap TV
Thanks for the reply, one I am looking at is the Canon Legria HF R66 www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/4278285.htm#pdpFullProductInformation
With the cash back, comes out a pound cheaper. I know that even with a better camera does not mean more people will watch my videos. I just want to be happy with what I do.
That looks good too. Create high-quality content and people will watch it!
The Tech Chap TV
True, if your video was 240p and bean can mic I would not have watched or subscribed.
+TheDutyPaid I probably wouldn't watch my own stuff either if it was that poor :P Glad to hear you subscribed though!
What's up with people using cameras for video. It's like using a digital alarm clock as an egg timer
+Casey Colbert (LCbiking) Video cameras?
+Casey Colbert (LCbiking)
Photo cameras might have much larger sensors, better quality, more background-blur, better low-light performance, less noise...
70d image way better, more cleaner look
+Super Gaming Family you need glasses
please go to the optometrist
+Super Gaming Family I, too, think the DSLR looks better. The Panasonic looks like a smartphone video.
FlorinU you need glasses
+Fountainpensforlife mmm... nope, I've got 20/20 vision. Maybe you need to change your cheap 14" monitor.
Really cheap 14" monitor my damn monitor is 4k 27inch so i can clearly see whats best
what lens are you using on the 70d?
+Its Vanika this one: www.amazon.co.uk/Canon-EF-S-18-135mm-3-5-5-6-Lens/dp/B0089SWZ3U/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1460193600&sr=8-1&keywords=18-135
one last thing, my hubs might get a 4k tv in a couple of weeks. does this even matter?
wow great I have the Canon xha1s videocamera can you make a review of this camera, and the differences between canonn XHa1S AND Sony HD professional video camera ? in other words i should sell my xha1s to get a Sony HD prosumer videocamera ?
it's unlikely I'll be able to get a review sample of those cameras for a thorough testing i'm afraid - I'd probably just google reviews for each and see which sounds better :)
Both seem really good !
Thanks for posting and good comparison, could you please do a low light test of the Panasonic for indoor events etc. subscribed & liked! Cheers!
+Robert Jung No problems Robert thanks for the sub! Yep i'll see what I can do :)
The canon has way more contrast than the Panasonic so should have reduced the contrast in the canon picture profile and also turned off all in camera sharpening in both cameras.
canon looks more natural.
That's interesting because I thought the Panasonic looked more "natural" while the Canon was probably more "flattering".
+Anthony Weekes (E1Tech) I think you're spot on really - the Panasonic definitely looks less sharp/slightly less focused.
+Anything And Everything Yep that's definitely a fair point :)
Very amazing I bought a sony ... grainy camcorder... was stunned. Stil think go pro and iphone is better no?
whats the best video camera for under $200
I would definitely go with the DSLR so many more options and the color difference is huge! Color is everything! I don't care about mics a mic is a separate purchase.
4k is a bit much for my system to handle as far as watching the video. 1080p seems to run flawlessly. Of course this is an old system I am watching it on and still runs Windows XP.
+WestCoastArachnids Yep stick with 1080p - or maybe 1440p for now :)
I try to convert my 4K to 1080P in after effects but I get a fog like finish. Same in Camtasia I get a fog dirty look after.
Well, you talked me out of using a camcorder for stills and video.
Even though your 70d has an APS-C sensor, it's way better than the camcorder.
Thanks for saving me a lot of trouble!
hi great video thanks for posting it, I will also like to ask you a question, what better image quality a xha1canon pro vodeocamera or a Sony pro videocamera ?
that's a bit too vague - which sony video camera?
what camera do you use now? have you had an eye on any other camera you want to buy?
I have noticed that camcorders somehow reduce the colors and the image is not sharp enough. Unless you not buy a professional high quality camcorder such JVC 200 or 300. Contrast,brighness,sensors,processors.. all have impact at overall image/video quaility not just the resolution.
Looks like lower contrast to me, not sharpness. If you look at his monitor, the 4K camcorder is actually quite a bit sharper. You can almost read the tiny text on the monitor, whereas it's basically a blur on the 1080p Canon. Contrast can always be fixed in post-production, but you can't get 4K resolution from an upscaled 1080p image.
basscadet75
I am very curious how can be fixed color reduction and lack of contrast via post process.
I do like the 70D footage more over the VX870.
Thanks for your expertise...visually makes sense 4K vs 1080.
I'll be making guitar tutorials. What is also important to me is sound quality . Also the ability to record in split screen i.e. my hands, feet & filming from a distance. I assume more than one camera is needed for this? (this could be a duh! question! lol
Plugging direct from my PA system to the camera also is exactly what i'm looking for.
hey man cool vs but are you sure the Panasonic is in 4K
For convenience when shooting video is your priority and slowing down action I suspect panasonic.
VX870 like a Cinematography effect and 70D is like a over contrast
try recording a low light school play with a dslr......ugh!!
i hope camcorders never die out. the ability to autofocus and keep everything in focus is more important than anything else. what good is a better image if it's out of focus.
