Such a good test. I think us golfers need to steer clear of the standardised labelling of shafts (Reg, stiff, x stiff) as it brings a element of ego into the game. Which can hinder playability. Lee’s swing speed is above average, and the senior shaft suits his swing. Soon as you take your ego out of golf you will see improvement!!! Very eye opening, thanks lee 😀
Ego plays a big part in golf equipment. As a more senior golfer, I tried a ladies driver a couple of years ago and liked it immediately and never looked back. Got loads of stick when I first got it but people soon stopped when they saw how good it was in my bag.
I fitted a senior into a ladies shaft for his Cleveland launcher irons and he’s dropped 2 shots. He loves them.
Interesting comparison! I think the big thing to consider if you want to switch or not would be how much you rely on your wedges for full shots. You might lose some distance and accuracy with the lighter graphite and lighter Flex shafts if you are fast swinger. I rarely go full shots with any of my wedges so this might be a good option for me
I switched. I went from a True Temper TT Lite R flex shaft to UST Mamiya 660 F2 (senior) graphite shaft. This summer I had a 90 g steel shaft with R flex put in that same club. I thought I'd get a tighter dispersion pattern. Well, I didn't and went back to the graphite shaft and love it.
Would like to see you do this with 5 7 9 irons as I’m thinking of going to graphite in full set

This was a very big help. Just bought clevland wedges with stock steel shafts. Thought I would try them as I have graphite shafts in my old wedges. Will be putting the graphite shafts in the new clecland wedges now.
As a senior, lost some distance,, put a ladies 45g.evenflow in my 3 wood gained swing speed and about 15 yds,,got a wedge similar results,, now got a 7 iron to test 50g shaft,, looks and feels great,,, cheers Alan 🤔😂
When I bought my CBX wedges, I chose the graphite shafts thinking they would be softer for a senior golfer with old shoulder injuries. I could not have been more wrong. They were actually so stiff that it was painful to hit them. After some research and due diligence on my part, I swapped those shafts out for the Nippon Zelos 7 shafts in A flex. The difference is like night and day! I can practice and play with these wedges for hours on end now, with no pain, incredible accuracy, and just ease of use. It's about time someone spoke up on this issue!
If graphite shafts have much weight, 90 grams and more, they are very stiff
not something I would have tried. My days of ego golf are now gone ,it’s all about what makes the game easier. Great video Lee 👍
I use a womens graphite 50g 56* sand wedge spin and control on it is amazing i have no fear of getting over anything 100yrds and in feels fine didnt take long to adjust to it, rest of my wedges are steel only for the sand wedge.
I rebuilt my bag this year my irons are five to gap wedge in mizumo hot metal 921 with recoil shafts the exactly the same as you used,My Taylormade driver stealth HD has fourty five gram shaft and my woods have the same light weight shaft,the results are great two hundred plus for my driver,I will be eighty this year, older golfers can get great results from accepting the fantastic range of options open to them,

Pretty impressive but I would now do the test in reverse A flex then steel to if the numbers match up.
You can have the best of both with the Nippon Zelos 7 shafts in A flex. Quite the upgrade indeed.
Yessir!! Disabled senior golfer here with Nippon Zelos 7 R2 flex (Pured at Golf Works) in my 2016 Mizuno JPX EZ Forged irons & T20 wedges and couldn't be happier! High launch and spin, stable, smooth and easy on this old & getting older body! I'm retired, living in the Philippines and golf 3-4 rounds a week and have turned into a complete golf geek! Oh well, I don't have much of anything else to do! This was a great video Lee, good point about the ego thing so many get caught up in, when they could be playing better golf. Hat's off to ya mate, good job!

After watching this a year ago I went and bought full graphite apart from wedge and they have made a huge difference to me so much straighter they go slightly higher in flight but no drop off in yards just feel easier to hit consistently better shots thanks lee I think this is where you excel in the vlog world reviewing clubs well done

Hi Lee there is a common theme developing in the recent videos and its macho man v scoring man. If the shafts were not defined by stiffness then I am sure more people would be fitted into a shaft that suits their game, rather than being able to brag that they play with stiff shafts. Well done for bringing this to the channel.
Hey up Lee , there is something in this , I fitted an aldila graphite shaft into my ram Tom Watson wedge back in my assistant days in the early nineties and got ripped for it , but the performance was awesome, but I retracted due to peer pressure and stuck with the standard steel , who knows pal 🤷♂️ keep up the great content , loving the live Thursdays 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

I hit a graphite shaft wedge ONCE and never looked back. Noticeable softer and more spin and with that enhanced feel, more accurate.
Good vid Lee. TXG just released a vid on the same topic today. Similar kind of conclusions. It is interesting and worth looking into further. The only thing that is difficult to predict is shaft deflection on turf interaction and how that may affect the way the club will enter and exit the turf. May well be very different to a mat and that may well negate some of the positives on dry ball data. Worth further trials tho.

I agree Lee, I have been fitted for soft regular graphite shafts for a year now, what a revelation, my irons have improved beyond belief, I am a carpenter / joiner and couldn’t get my head around it but I play smoother easier style golf and with results, and am gaining distance with technique,

I have been planning to do just that to my wedges. It actually makes quite a bit if sense. The bonus would be better control along with distance, hence, more confidence to hit away.
I play Nippon Modus 120 soft stepped in T20 wedges. Really enjoy them.
Good comparison here, Lee. Interesting results. Definitely would be worth playing a round or two with the softer/lighter shafts. I'd be curious to see how it affects your half shots and chipping and pitching. And whether you can still flight the ball down when needed. Probably can. Might be a little adjustment there, but probably not too much.
For me, I went to Catalyst 60 R in my Apex 19s a year ago and have loved them. I have a slow-to-average swing speed and with those shafts I get more height and distance on shots with somewhat better dispersion. So clearly the right fit for my swing and tempo. I ended up getting the A-wedge in the set in graphite as well, which is 48º. And that has become a killer scoring club for me. Great height and spin and everything. But most of all just tremendous confidence when using that club that I can attack pins. Also Arccos tells me I have the best up-and-down percentage with that club. Love it around the greens.
Now you've got me curious about possible graphite in the 52º and 56º. Short game is far and away the biggest strength of my game, though, and I kinda don't want to fiddle with it too much. But I'm a bit of a tinkerer and hey, I can always go back to the old set-up!

I have Cleveland CBX wedges with wedge flex graphite shafts. I may be looking into putting R or A flex graphite in them now. Stay warm!

I’m now playing 65 gram graphite shafts in my wedges and love them !,in fact I’m playing 85 gram recoil dart shafts in my irons and find exactly what you found. Great video by the way
I have CBX 4 as wedges and recoil dart 80 gr graphite and I must change …far too stiff for me…at 75 y/o still looking around.

Thats an interesting theory. So many people just take the approach that a wedge is a wedge is a wedge. I actually do that myself. I need to check that shaft change out.
Great video Lee. I've said it a million times if various reviews.... Ego gets in the way of a lot of golfers who are determined to play a type of club head or shaft, whereas something else would suit them better. People still won't listen though.

Another great video Lee, I do need to have a fitting. I m back into golf after 15 ish year absence also am 65, the shaft in my old clubs are regular and I dont seem to hit as far I used to, I will have to try senior shafts or even a woman's shaft.
Personally I've never used stiff shafts as I'm the proud owner of a slow swing but I play with a guy who's a big hitter, plenty of speed but he did try a wedge with a senior shaft and the difference was incredible.

Ive got an old RBZ driver and 3wd... They both have M flex shafts in them. When I put them in the bag, they tend to do what they are supposed to do. For me, any more, as long as the club works for me, it's in the bag until I start switching things out.....
Can't wait for your WITB for the new season to see if you do make the switch. On another topic could you please change the colours on the dispersion graphic as the pink and blue you used today are not good for us colourblind folk.
I spent the last 2-3 years just testing things out to figure out a good wedge setup for me. Went with a CBX 2.0 54/12 Standard shaft DG115 stiff - Lamkin TS1 midsize grip, Vokey SM6 58/12 Kgrind with a AMT White stiff - Golfpride MCC align midsize grip and then a Maltby Tourgrind MG 60/08 wedge with a KBS tour 90 stiff - Lamkin TS1 midsize.
I use my 54 for anything from 115-40 yards, the 58 vokey for anything sand and the Maltby for anything around the green. The lighter shaft in my 60 makes the wedge seem like it's throwing darts. A really important part of the setup is the grip too because it changes how the weight feels in the hand. Getting the right clubs that fit your preferences makes such a big difference.
Interesting, I just bought a mackdaddy4 secondhand with a ladies graphite and swapped it out for an XP95 Reg flex, mostly because the ladies shaft was 1 1/2" too short, not been able to try it much, only in the garden, but I prefer the feel of the steel shaft
In my experience lee and I’ve only ever been fitted twice but I’ve never been offered a graphite shaft for wedges not sure if it’s something new but it certainly does seem a good option and it would obviously be better to have these options open to people maybe the fitters don’t have access to these shafts or it’s some other reasons but also I think your the only person who I’ve seen mention it

Yip your onto something there , a lot of pros are going lighter these days in the wedges it’s upping the spin big time , try the modus shafts in the Cleveland cart aswell they are 105 -115 they are class too they might suit you aswell , really cool video man !!! 👍👍👍👍👍

This macho thing people have I need a stiff shaft when they hit the ball better with a softer shaft.
I have 120+mph driver swing speed, been playing 90 gram graphite shafts in my irons for years. Grew up learning the game on 90 gram steel shafts and every fitter tries to get me into 120+ gram steel x stiff shafts and every time I hit them the data is identical but the light graphite is just so much easier on the body so no point in changing.

I thought most wedges come in the manufacturer’s own shafts ! ?
So, would I have to buy a wedge full price and then buy a new shaft or would getting a fitting give me the choice ?

Depends on the brand. Cleveland this year offer a great custom fitting option and both those shafts are stock options.

Not sure as club building isn’t a thing I do I’m afraid. Would be the cost of the shaft and then labour charges.

You can get any shaft changed by a club builder mate. The new shaft will need to be ordered though

Well well, look at you, definitely in your element Lee, so how did you come across this difference in shafts . . was it on yourself or was it while doing a gap session with client, also is a 50° equal to a Sand Wedge, forgive me I'm old school.

Graphite is technologically superior to steel. Once the stigma of “old man graphite” passes, lots of players will realise they could benefit from graphite in their irons- whether it’s super light or not. I’m not saying everyone, but a lot of people really should look at it.
Those recoil shafts are lovely by the way- I games the F4 version for a long time.

Seriously Lee, try and get your hands on the F4 version of that shaft.
I had it built by my fitter so that the shafts were cut in such a way the my long irons were x-flex and then they gradually got softer until my lob wedge was a dead regular. Graphite shafts can be cut to give you exact flex’s like that. Gave me a wonderful feeling of consistency and control in my bag, from the long irons I swung hard to the short irons that I hardly ever took a full swing and wanted that softer lighter feel.
I still have that set and often switch between it and another set I have which is a 105g steel. I have a similar swing speed to you by the way and a single figure handicap. So I have some sort of idea what I’m talking about lol. Not just an old man or what ever like people think.
When my swing is feeling smooth, I game my graphite’s. When I’m feeling a little rough, I take the slightly heavier steel, just Cos it slows me down a little and makes me “feel” more controlled in my swing. But if I had to pick one, I would go with the graphite shafts in my steel iron heads....

I've just had this experience...I had recoil graphite shafts in all my old clubs even the custom wedges....the set felt balanced and I liked the feel...
Then I bought a new set of JPX 921 pro irons....again the recoil graphite shaft was the best fit ...but the fitter didn't think i should have them in the custom wedges....I took his advice hi rev wedge shaft....and hated the feel of them I also lost distance ...so much so i have had them re done with the recoil ...they feel great and are performing well on the carpet 😂😂😂

I wonder if its shaft weight rather than flex.
I suggested a few weeks ago that a lighter graphite shaft might suit your delivery pattern and it looks as though it does in your wedges.
But don't get hung up on labels like "seniors" and "slower swing speed players" a shaft is the timing device that delivers the clubhead to the ball at the right time and the in the correct orientation, what it says on the shaft is completely irrelevant.
Also as blokes, we need to take our ego out of our golf equipment choices, the size of our todger is dictated by the weight/flex of our golf shafts.👍

I don't get it. If you are getting 6mph club head speed more, wouldn't you get the same carry/spin and launch as your steel shaft? So say with a lighter steel shaft?
Other UA-camr have done in-depth look at using same stiffness or stiffer shaft that gets higher spin but lower launch with the same head speed.
I hate heavy shafts in irons Lee using kbs 105 in 4-gw and kbs 90 in 52,56,60. I can swing faster and get more control with the light/mid weight shafts. Graphite has always intrigued me and many golfers play way too heavy/stiff flex shafts I'm sure of it.
I’m certainly going to test lighter shafts this year for my clubs
@@LWG can't fault you there is a reason some pros are switching out to mid weight shafts and a few of the scratch and low single boys at our club have put graphite irons in the bag last year and all have increased distance with no loss of accuracy or control whatsoever 🤔

Graphite shaft is much easier to swing, much lighter, faster, making higher swing weight (which u feel the head much more). It is in theory every way better than heavier steel shaft unless you have serious issues of controlling it and you really want to slow down, hit shorter,. In real life it doesn’t really happen. And for those declaring to be too strong for graphite, well we all know BD use all graphite and hit them excellent, unless you are stronger and driving over 360 yrds with ease, then maybe.
I have graphite in my Mizuno irons and graphite in my 50 and 56 degree Cleveland wedges. It seems it may catch on!! 😀

Possibly a mix of Cleveland and srixon. The Cleveland irons aren’t for me.
Lee got callaway rouge pro with kbs tour c taper 110 s Shafts. 5to pw so wanted a gap or w wedge. Got apex forged 16 with UST MAMIYA recoil es 760 f3 shaft. Cannot tell you how good the recoil shaft is I'm dialed in with it 90% of the time, and feels amazing especially forged head.. What spec is that 760 f3? Is it senior or regular. Feel like getting fitted with them Shafts on my next set. Any ideas mate 👍

In a fitting I wouldn't want to know what the shaft is, I'd like it to be put in and just go from the numbers, takes ego out of it

I find the txg stuff extremely informative as a fitter myself. But I do like to test it as an average mid handicap golfer as Matt is a robot. A 13 handicap isn’t so results may differ.

Very interesting but you needed to swap back and repeat again with the KBS shaft. Repeat 3 or 4 times, might take you 30 mins, THEN look for a difference. I’m all for testing like this...but with such a small and biased test...anything you say about the results is meaningless and potentially 100% incorrect. You haven’t proved anything as you stated unfortunately. This isn’t a pop it you so please don’t take it personally, I fully support your channel and content...but if you want longevity and continued support from golfers moving forward, you need to think carefully about what you release as content, as you will be judged by it.
How is it biased?
Lee Whittaker Golf I don’t mean ‘you are being biased’ ...I’m referring to that the fact you will always get ‘data bias’ if you only hit one club then another. Your swing will get quicker as you hit more balls (to a point) and you will find a groove. To prove this isn’t happening you need to swap back and forth between clubs a few times...hit a decent number of shots with each. Take this as a positive comment/feedback, that’s how it is meant. The internet is full of people hitting 6 shots with one club, 6 with another and the making wild statements based on that data. Be different...come up with a testing protocol that is solid and reliable. Not many reviewers do and it would make you stand out from the crowd. 10 shots with one club, 10 with the other, then 8 with one, 8 with the other, then 6 etc. Do this all the time, every time...be different and your data will be far more reliable and representative of what is actually happening. Stand out from the crowd.
