Absolutely fascinating interview. Soviet childhood with many details. I have to mention that in France, Botvinnik was very famous among comrads. Soviet chess inspired French working class to play chess, even in France. ( We got FSGT : workers federation of sports). However, in the 70's, our medias politicized news about chess championship and argued against Anatoly Karpov...nevertheless, he's very popular among chessplayers, not only for his talent but also for his human qualities

Nice interview! Karpov is a very interesting person. I really like his chess playing style too because of how he could snap into an aggression after playing in a calm manner.

What a pleasure to learn about the great Karpov from the legend himself! Fantastic interview, Ilya! Can't wait for the remaining episodes. Thank you for the English captions/subtitles.
ps: Ilya, how on earth did you manage to not learn a thing by studying Karpov's games, man? :) :) Karpov's games are by far the most instructive games out there. And it is not even close...Positional chess at its very best!

Very interesting interview! Capa-Karpov-Carlsen is almost obvious line but I wonder where Fischer stands...

Morphy Tal Alekhine Kasparov had More beautiful games than Fischer!! Fischer beat the weakest chess World champion Boris Spassky only 17 wins 10 losses! Capablanca would beat Spassky easily 8 wins 6 draws zero losses! Carlsen would beat Spassky easily 6 wins 6 draws zero losses! Carlsen is 100xtimes better than Spassky!

Karpov has won over 160 super grand Master tournaments! Fischer won zero! Fischer won only interzonals 1962 1970! Fischer was Second in Santa Monica 1966 behind blunder maker Spassky!, Fischer did not won Havanna 1965!!

@@RaineriHakkarainen Fischer has done things no one else have. Known examples of Fischer's crushing power are US championships 1963-64 where Fischer won all 11 games in a row and candidate matches for 1972 WC match.
It should be remembered that Russians teamed against Fischer many times and they had state supported huge chess organisation behind them. Fischer did pretty much all by himself, alone.

@@RaineriHakkarainenof course Carlsen is better than Spassky, he has engines, insane genius, and lived 50 years later. Spassky was not the most talented WC, but he was very strong for his time and I think you’ll understand that if you look at his games. He’s very underrated. Also, of course the abovementioned played many gorgeous games, because we don’t really play so romantically anymore unfortunately. And yeah, Fischer won tournaments - including 2 unofficial blitz world championships where both times he scored like 19.5/21 or something. He had a ton of great results and he was a true genius, but yeah he wasn’t necessarily as prolific and dominant as others
