    The battery drain on these is miniscule Leon. Even though there is no on/off switch, as long as the device is not running the batteries will last ages. I have used these devices for years on my Canon 1000D. I use rechargeable batteries and probably recharge them every month - never had it die yet. One thing to watch is the cable where is exits the case. Over time, if flexed hard the wires inside will break - I am now on my third. When you wrap it up do not bend that bit of cable - be gentle. On the 1000D I have found the Length setting to be about 4 seconds. This to allow the camera to pulse the flash for focusing (in the dark) which can take a few seconds - a way round this is to use a Speedlite with E-TTL preflash (but that costs!)

      +Mick Hunt Thxs for the great comment Mick, yes for night if using the flash then around 4 seconds but I personally use an LED Light so leave it at 2-3

    Leon great video but I have a question dirty sounds stupid I have a Canon 600D with the flip screen put the settings in auto focus or A+ the flash automatically goes off annoying but not a problem can I look at the flip screen to see what the picture looks like before it’s taken or just let the intervalometer do it’s work 👍

      There is a setting in the camera where you can turn off the flash. Also if you are in LIVE MODE You will be able to see what picture you will get and then you can also set the camera to show the picture before taking another one

    Hi Leon I have the Sony a7iii and was wondering what focus mode you use and would you turn off the face detection off on my Sony. I know you have a Canon but any tips would help. When I say focus mode I mean flex spot, wide or center focus points thanks in advanced

      Hi dean, I turn off face detection and set the focus to ONE point which is just below centre which is where 99% of the time will be the fishes flank, it’s still on auto focus but only focuses on that one point. Hope that helps, I also take everything whether in day or night in Manual mode

    • @deanbrooker35

      Thanks, Leon I will give that ago. The last photo I took seem to be focused on my face fish was still clear due to the fact the f-stop was reasonably high but not as clear as it could have been. Thanks again for replying. I also use manual mode all the way lol

    With mine there is no need to remove the batteries at it turns off after 30 seconds of inactivity, so unless your only catching a fish every 2 or 3 years its good to go, that said its good practice to take a couple of spare AAA batteries just in case

    Do you need to focus the camera on where you want before you start the cycle? So if i was to put a bucket on a stick for instance where me and the fish would be, using back button focusing? Its constantly focused on that point as long as the subject and camera are kept the same distance apart etc.

Im only using the built in flash for night shots and am having to manually focus the camera first, is that normal. Also auto focus in manual settings during the day doesnt seem to focus on the fish properly, unless someone taps on tge screen to mske it focus on the fish. Any help massively appreciated!!

      Try getting a LED light around £20 and put on auto focus, set the auto focus point just below the middle of the fish and use an intervelometer and you’re good to go

    So I have the exact one shown in the video ... and recently something's gone wrong with it. The timer somehow is now interfering with the intervalometer setting such that it takes the first pic and then just sits there beeping for the rest of time... no counter, nothing. Anyone seen this happen and know what was done to cause that or can be done to unset it?

    • @LEONBARTROPPCARPER
      @LEONBARTROPPCARPER  5 років тому +1

      Not a lot you can do apart from either buy a screen or put the lens at its widest and hope for the best

    • @archivefootage7898
      @archivefootage7898 4 роки тому +1

      Get out in your garden/open space on even on the bank, with your unhooking mat and the camera set up on your tripod and the lens zoomed out. Get an adjustable bankstick and stick it next to yourself as you pose open handed kneeling behind the mat (like Leon does in the video). Adjust the stick so that it's slightly higher than headheight. Now, move your tripod to a position where when looking at the screen or through the lens the image in the frame has the height of the bankstick plus a little extra. Now measure the distance between the tripod and front of your unhooking mat (you could even use the bankstick for this). This will now give you a good idea of where to place everything (with the lens zoomed out) when you do have a fish to photograph and all you'll then need to do is angle the camera correctly (using the bankstick method always works).
