- Apple has used the Lightning connector for seven years. It used to be on everything but now it's only found on two types of devices. iPhones like the iPhone XS and iPhone XR, and lower-end iPads like the iPad Air. The lightning cable Apple includes with the iPhone XS doesn't support fast charging and transfers data at USB 2.0 speeds.
In order to get fast charging you need to buy the 30w USB-C power adapter. Apple uses USB-C on the iPad Pro and the MacBook Pro. Switching the iPhone to USB-C would unify Apple's products. But it doesn't look like that will happen any time soon.

I think people misunderstand the purpose. It’s not about being the best cable, it’s about being 100% proprietary. Mission accomplished.
That has always been Apple's marketing philosophy. Can't hate on them for having their own in-house hardware when they have an established consumer base and brand identity.

Well, flip it back and nope its dead! Dead charger now! Let me try a mouse on the USBs on my laptop, oh crap... It killed my laptop USB ports!". Anyways, Apple refuses to pay damages, there are little burn marks on the 4th pin (as everyone will have, its a design fault of Apple's lightning cable, and I bet I know how it got its name...), anyways, they must have crappy tolerances (as an engineer, I am using "crappy tolerances" to mean either a design or atrocious manufacturing defect), because you can even see burn marks on the metal ground housing of the cable as well as looks like the 4th pin jumped over to a data line.... Yeah, that's not good!
Meanwhile on USB C: Goes to dollar store, picks up a braided pretty $1 USB C cable, uses it on phone with 24w fast charging (12v 2 amps) and it works just fine, plugs in either direction, doesn't leave burn marks even though its 24w vs roughly 4w charging (800 mA apple OEM charger at 5v is 4w). Yeah... USB C is just much better engineered, it doesn't short out and much cheaper to make! It also doesn't leave the ground on the same contact plane as the live voltage (so setting it on metal table doesn't short it out like it will with Lighting cable... Horrendous design!)

So, analyzing what Apple has been doing lately, my guess is that they will ditch the lightning cable but not for usb-c. They will ditch lightning to implement a wireless charging only device and this scares me.
Tbh i rather have that ancient lightning port than portless phone, portless phone is an absolute mentally ill no brainer idea.
It causes way more problems than pros.
Yooo its been a year and u are correct
@@justsomeordinarywatcher3146 It's been another year and you're both wrong.
They want to but the tech isn’t really there. They’ll probably wait for air charging instead. MagSafe is a prototype of that idea
Lightning connector is on more than just the iPhone and iPad. PowerBeats Pro, AirPods, Magic Keyboard, mouse, and trackpad have the connector as well.
True and that is why you can't trust UA-camrs
That sucks, it's such a terrible connector.
With proper care during usage and minimal transfer of wires. My lightning charging cables have lasted well over 3 years now.
This is an Apple sponsored review folks!
with minimal driving. my car fuel tank has last me for months.

But careless people who own apple products dont care and destroy them and buy more and ask their parents for more money
I'm still using the micro usb cable that came with my second hand Nexus S, gone through 5 phones in the meantime.
Why are people just now complaining? If you haven't realised by now all Apple care is about is money. If they can charge you extra for a special type of cable, they will and they have!
And they will never stop
The iPhone 7 was the last apple device I bought. Sold that one a year into ownership because I was fed up with it and am very happy with my gently used Galaxy s8 Plus that costed me only 250 used. Big screen, actually nice OLED (iPhone x sources OLED from Samsung too), a headphone Jack, and USB C. Well and not to mention all the customization and app availability for electricians. iPhones are kind of just toys that are "simple and easy"

Switched from apple to android, never felt any regret from it. No more stupid dongles and no more stupid BS. Better camera quality, well, everything is better with my s10
DeathHawk 449 IPhones usually have better cameras than galaxies. Historically the current gen iPhone (in this case, the iPhone XI) will likely have a better camera than the s10. The s10 only has a better camera because it’s a generation newer than the XS. Wait for the current gen iPhone to come out before you make a camera claim lol.

I still have a old IPod nano & it charges using a dock with a 3.5 connector that uses the headphone jack. It’s fun to see how chargers adapt & improve.
“We just don’t know... how fast it is.”
Ermm, what?
Yes we do. Lol🤦♂️
what is the speed then
AzovFr “ Support for USB 3.0 speeds is notable because the Lightning port on current iPads and iPhones can only transfer data at around 25 to 35MB/s, which is USB 2.0 speed. At USB 3.0 speeds, data transfers would be upwards of 60MB/s and up to 625MB/s “

As a wise man once said “Never gonna say goodbye”, Apple doesn’t want to say goodbye to lightning port.
I came from the future to tell you that the finally implemented usb-c on their iPhone 15
Customers: Apple will u finally include usb-c in iPhone 20?
Apple: No... No I don’t think I will
Aren't they going to introduce the portless iPhone 13? With only wireless charging capabilities?
@@retrogamer2503 yes. While some are unhappy with that and others are fine with that, I would strongly suggest Apple not to do so
FAKE NEWS !! Apple finally used usb-c on their iPhone 73. Not a time traveler btw, everyone can just tell
Why bring up Thunderbolt in a discussion about the Lightning port?
You are NEVER getting Thunderbolt onto an iPhone.
It's just not technologically possible.
1> Thunderbolt is an *Intel* technology. It's *only* compatible with Intel processors.
2> Even if Apple could jump through the intellectual property hurdles, Thunderbolt is based on PCIe. ARM processors do not use this interconnect. I don't even think they can support it.
That said, the main reason Apple sticks with Lightning on iPhones and similar is for that delicious MFi royalties.
For every Thunderbolt port Apple installs on a computer, they're *losing* money. (See point 1 above.)
For every Lightning port Apple installs on an iPhone, they're *making* money on every MFi licensed accessory that user buys that goes into that port.
I would sooner expect Apple to retrofit the Lightning port to support fast charge negotiations and high speed data before they remove it completely and give up all that delicious MFi cheddar.
After all, it's their port, they can make it do whatever they want.
Joshua C. Thunderbolt is from Apple and Intel, they both get money from that. But yes it would be super dumb to put Thunderbolt in a phone
ARM definitely does support PCIE. Most of the developer boards (e.g raspberry Pi) dont expose it, but it's there.
@@DerHeilendeLotus Huh, today I learned something. Thanks!
@@DerHeilendeLotus The RPi Compute Module 4 now has an exposed PCIe 2.0 interface.
I remember being cynical about USB-C when it first came out. Then, when I bought my first phone that supported USB type C, the difference was like night and day. The cables more durable, faster, reversible, and above all else better than the predecessor.
Whats really ironic is the name
“Lighting cable”

"Lightning"

All this stuff about broken cables, I've never had to replace a cable, Apple lightning or non Apple USB-C/MicroUSB. I usually keep iPads for 5 years, charge either every day or every other day. First iPad I had for 5 years, on second iPad for 3 1/2 years, iPhone 11 for 3 years.
apple lightning cable: the technology equivalent of the nissan 370z.
Am I the only one whose apple chargers have never bent, folded or broken?
USB-C > all
I only had problems with Lightning. Like 4 broken cables. I also had 30 pin (iPad 2), but those weren't a problem for me.
i think the main thing is not putting the cable at awkward angles. i dont know how my times ive caught people bending my cables near the lightning connector
My girlfriends iPhone XS came with a broken lightning cable on arrival...
Nope i never had had a broken cable
I don’t think there’s anything wrong with it apart from the connectors break easily. I would still have to carry around the same amount of cables because I have micro usb and other devices as well.
They won’t get rid of it certainly not for the iPhone 12
Has anyone ever heard of an iPhone that destroys cables? My iPhone 6s ruined every cable I tried it with in a matter of days. I now have something like 25 of them sitting in a drawer. When I tried some of these with my new 11Pro (just to make sure they were all dead), they seemed to “infect” it with whatever is wrong. Now my new phone’s cords are only lasting a month, while my sister still has the original cable that came with her iPhone 7 how many years ago. I took the 6s to an Apple Store, who found nothing wrong with it. Anyone??
Pro tip: buy android
Its called anker. MFI certified and charges faster, can handle 175 pounds of weight and a free lifetime warranty.
@@jwalker7567 The cheap Onn brand at Walmart makes some pretty good cables too actually, but you have to buy the right ones. Don't buy the braided because they put the money into the braiding instead of the wires and shielding. Instead, buy the longer cables with the standard rubbery sheath as they beefed up the wires and shielding in those. You might notices these cables are significantly thicker and more rigid than others, and there's a reason for that. I know this stuff because I rewired my USB NES gamepad using one of these cables. I bought a few different kinds, cut em open, and put the best one on my controller.
It is the included power adapter that doesn’t support fast charging not the cable! If you use a lightening cable with a fast charging power adapter it will indeed fast charge
Cheap way to get faster charging: get Apple's own 12 watt/2.4 amp charger (or its equivalent from a good third-party manufacturer).

Apple users don't use cables to transfer anything. Airdrop is used mainly for everything. So it doesn't matter how fast or slow the data speeds are.
Apple makes a killing selling lightning cables and accessories. It wasn't ready to give up collecting that fortune from its largest user base (iPhone users).
