It seems utterly stupid to me that as an Android user I get the benefit of my MacBook and phone using the same charging cable, yet iPhone users don't get this benefit.
well most of the time whatever is happening on your phone could easily be carried on on the mac so most of the time it doesnt affect much thanks to the great ecosystem apple made
@@illumination_0109 wuu? So the state of charge also syncs? That's an awesome ecosystem! You just need to keep one device at home plugged in and you'll never need a charging cable ever again! Why hasn't Android thought of this?
Hey René, if you slowed down a little, you could breathe with editing them out and we could have some extra time to digest what you are saying. In a 15 minute podcast an extra 60 seconds will make no difference. Thanks for all your content over the years.
Not only that didn't some of those cables cause fires? I know I that some people had problems with cheap aftermarket cables but were the real ones also a fire hazard? I can just imagine someone leaving one of those in their she-shed and finding it on fire. "someone burned down my she-shed!!" no they were a victim of a faulty lightning cable!! Anyone who has seen that State Farm commercial would get the previous sentence right away hehehe.
the amount of lightning cables ive had to buy is making me die inside edit: lol its fine i do have a working cable at the moment, i think its called unbreacable or something and i got it on amazon half a year ago or so, and its still working so faar!
Get one of the Anker Powerline II or III cables, both have a hassle-free lifetime warranty and they are both insanely durable. My old Powerline II has been going strong for 3 years with daily wear and tear.
Well😅 I have iPhone 7 Plus... and I’m one year into the experience and my cable is still fine... my mom with iPhone 6s.. 3 years and her cable is still fine... we still use our original cables😅 the only thing that broke are my lightning cable earphones and my moms 3.5mm earphones
I must be the only one who hasn’t had any issue with their cables. Just pull it from the plastic part and not the actual cable. I’ve had a cable longer then my iPhone
@@natanruman I doubt it, unless they changed the pins where power is, then it's not possible. USB-C is a passive cable, unlike apple's thunderbolt. That's why I said USB-C PD, power delivery (literally just a bit thicker coper), it's the least common denominator that all devices support
I wouldn't recommend using a typical USB C cable with a switch. Nintendo used some weird bastardization of USBPD so it's possible it could damage the switch
Let’s be honest lightning is proprietary, that’s the only reason why it’s being used. Name anything else you use inside your house that’s not apple that uses lightning vs USB-“_”
@@PhilfreezeCH It's not a better port. There's not even any real tension mechanism to hold the cable in. Same pin out as micro-b. And the reversible thing is a gimmick, only half the pins are used at all. And it was even more fragile than micro-b. Type c does all of those things with a slightly larger footprint than micro-b. If apple did it for aesthetics, seems fair, but they kept it to make money on adapters and licensing.
While that's true, you can get good third party cables (I use Anker's excellent _Powerline_ cables) that are way more durable and will always support the full 2.4 amp 12 W charging from the Apple iPad charger or Anker's own USB chargers.
I’ve found that Apple cables actually fare better than 3rd party cables including once from reputable brands like Anker. The fact of the matter is that these cables are constantly being bent and pulled on so they’re going to wear
Yeah, my third party one, that's not officially licensed by apple, has lasted 10 times over what those round apple cables use. Only as of recently has the connector end start to wiggle.
nuh, how in that case they going to sell you adapters? Hmm, actually they can make 399$ wireless USB adapter for your MacBook. So MacBook won't have any ports, but there will be separated device for 399$ with usb port on it that connects to MacBook and works and usb port. Actually, you can make even better if that would be type-c USB, so you will also need USB-USB-type-C adapter
I agree. Beefier power, data speed. Too bad they couldn’t find a way to do this on the Lightning though, which I consider a way more durable connection.
@@johnnydfred It isn't. Try using a MacBook USB-C Charger for data and it's no slower than lightning. Very crowded with all the different standards though.
@Kwarkool I know, but I said it because so far my devices matches basically every third party devices: cameras, adaptors, laptops , etc etc. When I used my iPhones I always had to buy compatible adapters. At least I always pack one thick usb c cable and I'm done.
As someone who uses iPhone and iPad for music making (which requires several accessories/dongles), the biggest problems are: - Lightning is under-powered, so many accessories need external electricity - There is no lightning multi-hub, so you can basically only plug one thing at a time
No mention of the biggest problem of Lightning connectors: the contacts are exposed, allowing people to touch them. Even though gold plated, people get their skin oils and sweat onto the contacts, then when plugged in and power flows corrosion ensues, which often ruins the Lightning cable's connector, but more importantly also often damages the device's Lightning port, causing loss of functionality, for example only working when plugged in one way, or necessitating a potentially expensive repair or premature device replacement.
This is quite a scam Crapple has going for them. I've had android devices since 2010 and the only problem I have with them is, in the case of Samsung, after 2-3 years they no longer do security updates.
The cable itself wears out FAR sooner than any corrosion seen on the connector itself. One of the biggest flaws from apple is the cords. I would rather see them continue with their own proprietary connectors, whether lightning or some sort of magsafe-mini for iphones/ipads. Android can continue if they want with usb-c and it's 100 wildly different unlabelled variants as shown in the video than to bring that migraine over to Apple. I'd rather usb-c be more standardized and properly labelled before bringing it over.
Before changing to Android devices, I had an iPhone and the I had to buy multiple Lightning cable. I take care of my things, but we all must admit, their cable are seriously cheap. Sorry to say, but that's the truth. My friends who own iPhone today, they even admit it that the Lightning cable are very cheap and break easily. They had to buy multiple one. I didn't change from iPhone to Android phone because of the cables, though, that's another story of its own.
In my experience, cables of all types fail when the user operates the device whilst it is plugged in. I run Android and iPhone handsets simultaneously and the fail-rate is about the same (ie, very rare) because I don't tend to use the phone whilst charging. It sounds like nothing, but these cables suffer fatigue when wobbled, pulled and twisted over a long period. I would imagine that wireless charging adoption will help reduce this even further.
@@SteveHuffer I use my phone while it's charging all the time. The number of cables I've had to replace in the 4 years I've had my phone? One. I've actually had battery banks die faster than the cables. Edit: I should clarify that I don't have an iPhone and never have. I have no idea what the durability of the lightning cords are. When I buy new charge cords, its because I need a different length or because I lost/forgot one.
Well, I lived another story, because my lightning cables lasted like 2 years, except for the non-Apple ones, but the Apple ones, while the rubber starts to degrade and break, they still last if cared properly. I've even stripped all the rubber coating in one and it lasted 2 more years. The non-Apple cheap cables (because there are very good ones, but not cheap), along with almost all of the micro-USB fail very often, where the cheaper ones last like 1 month. They look like new, but they don't work. So yeah, not ideal, but they do last
AkatsukiLink Unless you get a more expensive lighting cable, they'll last no more than two months. Finaly, Dad expent 30 dolars on one and a slightly cheaper spare and those lasted me close to a year.
@@rac1equalsbestgame853 well, my xperia Z3 from a long time is still like new, my one with the s7 Edge is still like new. I've god several Android phone and my cable didn't broke at all. I mean, I don't understand why Apple cable doesn't last long.
Ummm... the lightning connector itself fails quickly and often. I have a BOX FULL of lightning cables that all LOOK perfectly fine, but all the tiny gold contacts are worn thru. I’m not heavily plugging in my phone multiple times a day. One to two times a day at most! I used my FIRST 30 pin cable from the day I got it to the last day I had devices that used it. Lightning is a connector that has a convenient size but 100% failure rate within a short timeframe. After 1 year and over $100 spent on Apple brand lightning cables, I now only get dollar store lightning cables so I’m only spending around 1/4 or less what I did, knowing full well that some won’t work, but I’m still spending much less buying poorly made knock offs than Apple’s poorly made, expensive cables.
kidwajagstang yeah it’s a bit much for you to say it has a 100% failure rate for the connector itself wearing through. I don’t know a single person that has voiced that issue before. If you had said cable wear I’d have been with you fully.
I have my lightning cables that came with my iPad Air and iPhone 6S Plus. I use these devices to this day and on a daily basis. The cables still work wonderfully to this day. Coincidence? I think not.
@@techforever1970 I do too. I don't know how some people can have cables that last forever and others have cables that break every couple of weeks. I think it's all about how you treat them.
One clarification: Intel recently gave up Thunderbolt 3 to the USB-IF so it's now royalty-free. Great video! And yeah, no matter when iPhones make the switch, there will still be a ton of people that complain about having to buy new accessories or cables. Hopefully CarPlay will work just fine with USB-C to USB-A cables.
Android Auto works just fine with my Anker USB-C to USB-A cable. I would hope CarPlay works fine with the same cable once the iPhone makes the switch to USB-C as well, or at the very least the Apple cable.
"Intel recently gave up Thunderbolt 3 to the USB-IF so it's now royalty-free." Excellent news, as Thunderbolt is an excellent interface. Now all we need is for USB-C standards to be 'standardised' and also have a mag-safe like connector.
"One clarification: Intel recently gave up Thunderbolt 3 to the USB-IF so it's now royalty-free." - Not true at all. Although USB 4 will integrate Thunderbolt 3’s features, Intel says that the two standards will coexist. While USB 4 is open, Thunderbolt 3 is not, and Intel requires manufacturers to be certified to use it. It also offers these manufacturers more support with reference designs and technical support. USB 4 might have the same specs, but Intel provides other Thunderbolt 3 services that go beyond the hardware itself.
My bet is that Apple ships a Lightning to USB-C cable in this year’s iPhones, and then switches to full on USB-C when people have gotten used to USB-C female so that the compatibility change won’t be too drastic
well i don't know about that, because people will try to charge there macbooks with that ... or try charge there phones with a 20A charger...... it might just blow up... Besides the lightning jack it just works well and it can do all the stuff usb does if you get a powered dongle you can use a mouse or a SSD no problem or use a external screen .. i dont see a reason to change it ... i have 5 computers at home and only 1 has 1 USB C poort . but all have type A usb . same goes for the rest of the world you can find Type A every there . try find a battery pack with USB C .. how many choices you have ? now try USB A ... Usb type A still rules the world

He does sound like he's on the brink of tears the whole video because people don't like Apple. Some of their design choices are smart, others aren't. People will love and hate different aspects of different brands no matter what. It's how the market functions.
Apple is that one kid who made something pretty cool, and everyone praised him for it so he centered all of his designs around it, but then another kid took his design and significantly improved on it and stole all his thunder, so now everyone uses this new and improved design, but the first kid is so salty about losing all his attention that he refuses to switch to the new design and sticks to "HIS" design because 1) It's what he made, and 2) Because all his other designs are already centered around it, meaning he would have to update all of them to fit the new design.
This is one of the first times I've strongly disagreed with you and found one of your videos to sway away from reasonableness and into apologism at points. Pretty much every example and most of your reasoning comes from Apple's and other device makers'/standards' past. But the reasons for Apple to move to USB C are for a better PRESENT. And sure, there are a bunch of devices still using annoying Mini USB and whatnot. But so goes Apple, so goes the world. If Apple moves to USB C for iPhones, the standard will get better. If they go with USB C PD - good luck finding a non-PD USB C cable within 6 months. Basically, we want Apple to use the same power that they used for evil with the headphone jack and use it for good with USB C. If we find ourselves in a glorious (near) future in which Android phones, iPhones, iPads, MacBook, PC laptops, game consoles all have USB C. Manufacturers of tertiary devices like headphones, cameras, you-name-it will all be pressured into adopting USB C on their devices. We're slowly seeing it already with headphone (seeing Sony, Bose, and Microsoft's latest ANC headphones). Imagine the cascading effect if the biggest phone in the world (iPhone) ships with a USB C to USB C cable.
Nate Ford this guy either the biggest sheep or deep in apple’s pockets. Any bad press about apple and you know he’ll post a defensive video. I fully expect a video on why the butterfly keyboard is so good due to all the recent terrible press on it.
Bruce Welling Why can’t you make a face-based video without being „in Apple‘s pocket“? You might say you’d like Apple to move to USB-C (I do too), but there’s nothing wrong in Renes video.
As a person who uses several Apple products, it doesn’t make sense at all about what they’re doing with these ports. Just USB-C all the things already!
@@AdamSmith-gs2dv as said in the video, not much. Their t-shirts make more money than their lightning licenses. regardless, i'd rather have usb-c be more standardized and labelled before bringing it over to apple. Much preferable to fucking up my $1k iphone with the wrong, plainly labelled, usb-c cable.
@@Fredy_The_Yeti most people on contracts (which is 90% of US phones) don't actually pay the $1k upfront, you know that, right? I’m not sold on USB C, my son’s Nintendo Switch bricked due to a faulty USB C charger (not a cheap charger but the official Nintendo one), my best friends Pixel 2 (by HTC) wouldn’t charge due to a faulty USB C port and my brother’s Pixel 2 XL (LG) doesn’t recognise his headphone dongle (the official one supplied) and strangely thinks a charger is connected instead. USB C seems to be massively fragmented on quality and reliability. Please keep Lightning Apple.
15 mins to explain why apple hasnt gone to USB C...hmmmm. We all know at this point that apple will eventually will USB C...apple is just milking it. They make too much money selling their lightning cables, accessories, and the licenses. It is as simple as that. It is all about money. I dont need a 15 min video for this.
Mik S lol. Shut up. It is true. Every penny counts. They have to turn a larger profit every year and they have to answer to investor. Once that is the goal, it is a race to find ways to squeeze more money out of customers.
Mike Magana I know many people doesn’t understand it, but it is really quite simple. Apple fights for customer satisfaction like only other few companies do, not always in a perfect and successful way but they do put more than average effort into it. And that’s an huge part of their success. Many people like to believe Apple users are dum and buy whatever has their logo. The reality is the opposite. Apple users are demanding, that’s why they pay for Apple products in the first place. And every time Apple fails on some product they lose clients. So, justifying cable options with small change money that is really what that business is for a trillion dollar company, is not their goal. Keeping the client base happy is more important. Many more companies could learn from that. Either you focus on today’s profit or you bet on the long run.
I like lightning port more than USB-C, and I wish Apple could improve it. You see that it's reversible? Yeah, but inside the phone only has pins on one side. If Apple could utilize all pins, that would be a lot better (which means that might not work with older version). For me, USB-C become very loose after unplugging a few times, compare to lightning, never get loose. It stayed as clicky as new even after 5 years of use, and that's the main reason why I prefer lightning over USB-C.
The reluctant to adopt changes is not a good thing for consumers. Both by company voices your own voice to convince others shows your bias. Every company is out for financial gain and not for the consumer ease of used.
I love the lighting port! In my experience, its been the most durable port used on mobile devices.. yea i know usbc is “better” but it definitely doesn’t hold up as well and durability takes priority for me. I have 7 year old lightning ports that still feel like new
Usb C cables can last that long. They literally have not been out long enough yet. I don’t see the point when other cables last the same amount or more.
@Blaine Murphy and not for nothing, to say apple "just takes $4 per connector" makes it sound like it's mere pennies. It makes almost every apple certified cable or dongle more expensive than their counterparts on the market. USB-C requires a mere $3500.00 to manufacture as many USB-C cables, dongles and adapters as you wish. That translates to literal pocket change for most companies that are manufacturing hundreds of thousands of cables and accessories. HDMI I believe is something like 14 cents a piece. Every other manufacturer makes their hardware compatible with all existing cables whether their certified or not. Apple literally won't even allow ANY third party companies sell a USB-C to lightning cable. They literally force their own customers who own both a macbook and iPhone to shell out $35 dollars just to connect the two. USB-C to USB-C 3.2 gen cables can be bought on Amazon for $6. Want to output video over HDMI with your iphone? Itll run you $49. USB-C to HDMI? $10.99 certified on amazon. These are just two common cables I'm listing, and there's so many more with the exact same outcome. Many adapters and cables can only be bought through apple forcing you to shell out 3x, 4x, 5x the price of a similar accessory for a competitor. There's zero reason to keep the lightning port except to milk their consumers for more money. Anyone supporting this practice is merely making excuses for a company that squeezes it's own consumers pockets. Apple is the only one in the industry who pulls this b.s. to its loyal base
@Blaine Murphy Apple makes at a MINIMUM $4 per cable or device. So no, they are not making pennies. They're making at a minimum $4 per device. And that's on the accessories that they will even allow manufacturers to produce. Do you really think that USB-C to lightning cable that literally almost every single iPhone user with a macbook needs is making only pennies, or even $4 on a simple cable that sells for $35.00? Honestly I think you need to take a more objective view, its incredibly blatant there really isn't much of an argument to make
All I know is that I can plug the 3.5" audio connector for my earphones into my iPhone 6s in the dark without any issues but I cannot do the same with the lightning cable.
I have an original two years old lightning cable from my iPhone box and it's still in pristine condition despite being used almost every other day. What do you people do to these cables? How do you break them?
The worst thing about lightning cable for me? It's structural weakness. I don't know how many lightning cables I've replaced over the years in comparison to USB cables only being replaced once after jamming the cable in a car glove box.
"All lightening connectors are built to the same high apple standard, so they just work, unlike USB-C" "Well sure the cables break all the time. It's not like they're apple products and all built to a high standard. I mean what do people expect from apple? Good design?"
Parker Wilkins Just haven’t. While I hardly use mine on my iPhone( Qi charger), I loan my cord out A LOT.. I do use one for my iPad, though, and so far, so good. And yes, I did indeed have a micro USB self destruct on me, just unraveled like a cheap sweater!
It’s true that it’ll be very hard to differentiate between which USB C cable that supports USB PD/QC2/QC3/QC4+ just by looking at the cable itself. Then there’s different speeds, optical and digital ones for Thunderbolt 3 🤔 I mean I’m all in for USB C, I think it’s great but it needs improvement. Maybe a notice like the Windows XP days except this is for like “you’re using a slow(er) cable”?
wtf do u be doing with ur cable?? Im on contract so i get a new iphone every 2 years and the lightning cable that comes in the box lasts me the full 2 years
the best apple cable I had so far is the sharkk one. lasted a year of every use. brought it with me in the car, to school, and at bed. it was the one that shipped with the 8 plus I bought wholesale :)
It’s a bit of a stretch to suggest Apple use lightning to USB A to accomodate for all the windows laptop users... especially when they removed the headphone jack when hardly any of their customers used Bluetooth headphones and most used wired.
The audio jack is a standard port, Lightning is not. The only reason Apple is keeping lightning is so they can charge royalties to cable manufacturers.
You are comparing apples and oranges. The audio jack is analogue input/output. They have gone through some updates to include more channels, have better shielding, etc. Digital cables are a completely different thing. They need to handle specific voltages at a fast and reliable rate which can lead to a whole bunch of issues. Making them charging cables as well for devices with higher power needs, introduce even more complexity as you are now mixing data lines and power lines within a single cable which can cause interference...
@@AdamSmith-gs2dv I was making the point that digital port will eventually be outdated, no matter how good they are now. The same isn't true for analogue ports. Ofc Apple is using a proprietary port for financial gain but that goes w/o saying.
I still think that Lightning is a far better thought out product than USB-C. Lightning port is just a hole and usb-c port is a hole with a tiny stick in it. You plug the cord in it unattentively or jerk the cord while plugged and you break that tiny stick in there. And your device goes to service. Very stupid
2:17 actually, the latest iPhones (My friend just got one) ship with a USB C to Lightning cable now. Honestly, the biggest thing that bugs me, is if I go to Amazon and search for a USB C Hub, the results all show these devices with a USB C input and USB A outputs, with card readers and HDMI ports... and other things. Technically, that is NOT a USB C hub, it's a docking station. I just want to have multiple USB C ports to use on things like my Tablet or PC that only have a single USB C port. Sure, I want some A ports too, but I actually have some USB C devices, such as a memory stick. No "Hub" that I have found has anything more than a USB C to host, and USB C power input, with USB A device ports.
Since I made this post, I have actually found some USBC to 2x USBC and 2x USBA hubs. However, where some of the previously mentioned "docking stations" often have a "Charging port" suitable for Mac and Phone/Tablet use, these are clearly designed for a PC and have no charging port. Which still leaves you with that issue if you want to use it on a phone/tablet, you can either use the "Docking Station" and power it while you use USB A ports, or plug in the hub to have multiple USBC ports and A ports, but lose the ability to power/charge it.
The problem is that usb-c is just not a good connector physically. It is not sturdy enough. Also it is sad that apple gave up the magnetic connector on the power cord. That was genius.
I have a feeling that they gave up the mag connector because they knew that they would be selling more extended warranties on the new MacBook Pro's too
not all cables are created equally... also some are, "destroyers" of cables ... or phones. Some peeps just aint coordinated. Other times the cables are flimsy!
For years I was trying to get a usb charger with a whole bunch of ports and they are just recently becoming commonplace. With usb c, were back to square one. Try finding a multi port usb c charger and you’ll notice that most of what’s available gives you only 1, maybe 2 usb c ports with all the rest being usb a. How long will it be before we get affordable 5 or more usb c ports on a single charger?
bought my wife an iPhone 7 in 2016. she had it for 1 year. in that year, we bought 4 lightning cables to replace the broken ones. i bought a nexus s in 2011. don't have the phone anymore, but the included micro usb cable we still use today. it's loose, but still works.
murfad I have micro usb cables from 2011 but there have been quite a few that have broken on me where they don’t charge unless held a certain way. More durable than Apple’s lightning cables for sure but not perfect and it depends on the user and how careful they are with their cables.
@@keithwhitehead4897 Except Thunderbolt cables both charge and transfer data at high speeds, so you really only need 1 thunderbolt cable for everything (provided you are only charging 1 device at a time, of course). For example, I just went on a week-long trip and brought my laptop, Nintendo Switch, phone (not an iPhone), headphones, wireless mouse, and portable charger, yet only brought a single thunderbolt charging cable.

Im pretty sure a good advancement in technology is to make something safer and better, not fragile and good. Safety first if I must say.
The lightening cables always looked really fragile to me. USB-C works great and there's no "upside down" problems. I've had a USB-C phone for 4 years now. I've only needed to replace one charging cord - and it wasn't even the charge cord that came with the phone. It was a backup cheap cord I got on Amazon. But Apple users love that feeling of superiority they get from lording their fancy phones over all the "poors"

It is compatible with fast charging. The “standard” charging speed for USB A is 5watts, but it can go up to 12watts, and USB A Lightning wires support that. If you want faster speeds than that, Lightning still supports that. Ironically, you need a Lightning to USC C wire (and a an appropriate charger/hub) instead of a Lightning to USB A wire, but with one, you can carry a charge of 30+ watts. This is a god-send for anyone with a 2017 iPad Pro like myself, since not only is it way faster than a 12 watt connection, but it’s the only way to charge the device faster than it uses energy when putting it through heavy work loads.
From the iPhone 8 models it supports PD fast charging over USB-C to Lightning cable. Just use a USB-C charger that has over 15W of power it must be a PD charger. Your iPhone will charge with 9V, 12V or 15V with 18W power max.
God that must suck! Can't love without my 40W, 10 minutes of charge to 65-70% and that charge is solid for at least 2 full days on the 4300Mah. At full charge I'm going well over 3 days before battery level critical warnings.
Yes i literally watched the whole video with this thought screaming in my head so loudly it almost drowned out my ability to listen to his points. Apparently Lightning branded ports and cables will still be made as basically USB 4 devices of the highest quality and functionality. Despite that I highly doubt that other major tech manufacturing companies are going to adopt USB 4 just to let intel continue running away with economic control of the increasingly more important features lightning has considering they will now have royalty free access to them. I 'm honestly very dissapointed that this was not mentioned in the slightest in this video even if all of the details wont be clear until the standard is implemented it would be foolish for Apple to ignore this in my opinion .It's clear by what was said here that Lightning is already inferior to current USB 3.1 G1&2 with the only argument to keep it essentially being to continue to control their own standard, and to avoid consumer backlash. With their history on the 3.5mm aux input it would appear to me that Apple has no problem changing things on a whim except with USB 4 it will have the reverse implications that removing 3.5mm did since the quality/features will be greater not lesser or negligible. Also considering the state of developments with Windows on ARM, and other all in one mobile to desk experiences like Dex the display out capabilites are innevitably going to become more saught after. Anyways thats my poorly punctuated rant on the subject, but mainly thanks for recognizing the USB 4 developments among a bunch of others who somehow were overlooking or underestimating it.
The worst feeling is having USB-A to USB-C when you need C-to-C. And to top it off, OnePlus, Huawei, and others have proprietary charging standards, and both require A-to-C called cables. FOR THE LOVE OF EVERYTHING, can't we just have type-C on *both* ends of *every* cable, and for them to *all* support PD 100W, Alt-Mode (for display out), and fast charging standards?
@@Kiyoshi_9606 Totally valid complaints and hopefully at least functionality becomes homogeneous when usb 4 starts rolling out. As far as the c-a thing goes im pretty sure this is due to the fact that most computers have more A ports than C as well as most AC-DC adapters for charging. To change all this so rapidly is not soemthing I can see mamy companies doing for a while or possibly ever.
I’m Mexican and i don’t know I’m using the correct terms but something that I hate about USB-C is that in my case, the ports and the cables are getting everyday more and more loose, and that didn’t happen me with lighting and USB-A.
I have never ever broken a genuine lightning cable, I've only broken a few shitty third party cables. Also that "can't plug my iPhone to my Macbook" argument is just retarded because there's no reason to plug your iPhone to your MacBook, it's just a charging cable so obviously it'll be whatever plug the charger uses.
I am an android user however I personally think the lightning connector is one of the best small connector designs ever made, it is reversible and the pins on each end (male & female ends) are in a solid location, no stupidly thin wafer of plastic and pins in the female end that can be easily damaged if inserted incorrectly.
So according to Tech Insider every other iPad in the lineup is "low-end" aside from the iPad Pro, even though the Pro uses the A12X and the current Air uses the A12.
Mushfiq Rebel 5gbps when it’s used on an iPad Pro “With the arrival of the iPad Pro back in 2015 we found that the device could support USB 3.0 speeds. This moves the rates up to a far more impressive 5Gbps, but this is still only half that of the capabilities offered by USB-C.” www.macworld.co.uk/feature/mac/usb-c-vs-lightning-3666439/
José Abraham the only Lightning devices with USB 3.0 speeds are 12.9 iPad Pro 1st and 2nd gen and the 10.5 iPad Pro. Even the 9.7 iPad Pro comes with USB 2.0. Why Apple doesn’t ship the 1000$ iPhones with 3.0 speeds is beyond me.
0:38 what I like about the lightning cable that I’ve not seen on any other charging cord is that it doesn’t matter if it’s upside down it’ll still go in and charge. Other phone cords don’t have that unfortunately:/
Pretty sure the Lightning connector itself can limit the power delivery to 18W which I imagine is good for the overall battery health of connected devices. Happy if they keep Lightning on the iPhone for a while.
My issue with Lightening in 2019 is slow throughput. Why not spec bump Lightening to USB C speeds? Fortunately Apple moved to USB C on the iPad Pro where it was desperately needed the most, so the need to move the iPhone to USB C has been dampened a bit.
I couldn’t care less about them keeping lightening on iPhones. Nothing is being done so heavily on an iPhone that requires the benefits of USBC and notice a more than marginal difference. Give me lightening and improve on wireless tech...
Here's why USB is better 1. Its not proprietary 2. Its not proprietary 3. Its cheaper because it's not proprietary 4. It can do everything lightning can along with USB 3 Gen 2 data speeds 5. Oh and did I mention it's not a proprietary connector?
USB C would be better because many devices use that now. Imagine using the same charge cable for your iPad Pro, your MacBook / Windows Laptop and your iPhone. That would be great since I wouldn’t need to carry around as many cables (currently I carry around Micro USB, USB C & Lightning).
Lightning cables do break more than usb-c cables. I work at an electronics store and the frequency at which people buy lighting cables far exceeds usb-c. Because lightning is proprietary Apple takes licensing fees on every cable made, which is why they are made more cheaply to keep the cost competitive. You can easily feel this with your hand on an lightning cable compared to a usb-c cable which can be 2\3 the price. This translates to the lightning dongles as well. There is a reason that the market for lightning-aux dongles is so much larger than usb-c one even though there are tons more android phones out there without a aux port than Iphones.
I’ll take lightening over usb-c (hardware wise) any day. I can’t stand connectors like micro usb and usb-c that have little plastic tongues sticking out of the connector that invariably break before the device does leaving it bricked through simple inability to charge. People conflate the protocols with the hardware all the time.
Yeah… I mean Lightning looks really strong when compared to USB-C. I have iPhone but my friends have phone that use USB-C and it’s kinda make me worried every time They have me plugged their phone in with that USB-C.
1:50 Lightning was introduced for more products than that in 2012. iPhone 5, iPad 4th gen, iPod touch 5th gen, and a new iPod nano -- all were Lightning compatible and released around the same time.
Renee you are fast talking and quite frankly I think border line genius. I always enjoy listening to you break down things so us normal folk can understand them. Keep it up, been listening to you sine TiPB.
Lightning connector seems to be much stronger than those thin lips in the usb-c connector. I have had a Pixel 2 and the connector on my charging cable (the one i got with the phone) is so flimsy, that it’ll just randomly drop charge when moving the device about. Insulation quality on the cables is another story.
Man do I enjoy how you clarify Apple stuff with such insight, clarity and honest enthusiasm. Your videos on Jony Ive also laid bare the heart of the issues instead of the surface hype. We need more of this. Thank you so much. 😊
Soooo I should keep my iPad pro 2015? Was thinking about upgrading because I don't want to invest in lightning adaptors when USC "is the future" I also use my headphone jack ALOT. Will lightning transfer files fine when iPad OS comes out? Thanks all nerds are welcome to answer my question lol
Good points, well made, but I can't help feeling you are seriously underestimating the revenue from the lightning cables. An approved cable pays dollars per cable for that approval - and with lightning cables being so delicate - you do the math.
Based on accessories revenue, of which MFi can only be a portion, I think it''s hard to underestimate it? Apple leaves a lot more money than that on the table in many ways.
Delicate? I’ve had a nylon-braided AmazonBasics cable for over a year, and the connector still works. Sure, the nylon braiding means that the cable will very likely outlive the connector, but I doubt that would be significantly better with USB-C.
@@vector3578 I wonder if the revenue for MFI is actually in there or if its in licencing revenues or some such - just to be clear I don't actually know, genuinely asking.
Great video and excellent points! While I was mildly inconvenienced by the 30-pin to Lightning change, at the time, it was largely alleviated by the new connector cable coming with each new device. So now the only remaining 30-pin device is my beloved iPod Classic. Of course, even my iPhone SE now has sufficient storage to render it obsolete (sob). Until now, my only objection to USB-C was Apple using it for CHARGING ports on its laptops. Why do away with the mag-safe connectors, when these have always been proprietary ports? I absolutely LOVE the mag-safe connectors, even when they needed the annoying mag-safe 1 to mag-safe 2 connector. USB-C *sounded* like the future for data links, but after this video I am less inclined to rush in.
"Proprietary" doesn't mean exclusive in the case of the Lightning port thankfully. We didn't have to rely on only Apple for cables and adapters as they were readily available anywhere ( quality aside) , so proprietary isn't necessarily a bad thing such as Dell was doing years ago forcing us to use only parts available from Dell such as power supplies in their PCs. I do agree that Apple cables disintegrate way faster than say Anker brand cables but they are included with a new device so there's that.
Informative video up to the 4 minute mark, but I'm having to bail out long before the end because your overplayed righteous indignation and ironic chuckling are highly irritating. I wish there were captions, so I could just read the transcript, as I _am_ curious about your thoughts on what Apple did wrong with Lightning.
Ive only just got my first iphone a couple months ago, though I was using an ipad for a little bit longer as a promotion form my phone carrier and I gotta say, I just like lightning better than USB-C. Why? Well, my old phone was an Essential PH1, a phone that uses type c and I cant tell you how many type c cables ive bought just because the connector itself wears out meaning that the cables fall out of the phone easily. Meanwhile, I still have the same lightning cables that came with my pad and phone and they still satisfyingly click in and refuse to let go without a good firm tug, meaning i feel better about overnight charging and large sync sessions.
Rene, I feel like you turn up the saturation and sharpness in your videos and it looks really artificial, compared to, say a Linus or MKBHD video. Any plans to go for a more natural camera look?
I’m quite happy they’ve kept lightning! I don’t even want the latest iPhone’s but I can afford them and money burns. The fact they keep lightning keeps me from splashing out.
It seems utterly stupid to me that as an Android user I get the benefit of my MacBook and phone using the same charging cable, yet iPhone users don't get this benefit.
I'm kind of a USB-C evangelist and I never even thought about that. That is hilariously stupid. Shoutout to Apple.
well most of the time whatever is happening on your phone could easily be carried on on the mac so most of the time it doesnt affect much thanks to the great ecosystem apple made
@@illumination_0109 wuu? So the state of charge also syncs? That's an awesome ecosystem! You just need to keep one device at home plugged in and you'll never need a charging cable ever again! Why hasn't Android thought of this?

Yeah. It's that simple. There's a lot of other explanations, which this dude just wasted his breath on, but we all know the reason.
I was just thinking, “that’s a long ass video to explain that it’s an asshole design and Apple is greedy”.
Exactly...
Apple's cables have always split the cover sleeve with use, maybe they need to rethink their material choice.
They do it on purpose, so you gotta buy new ones regularly.
What the hell do people do to their cables? Ive never had an apple cable fail from normal use!
Yeah, my third party one, that's not officially licensed by apple, has lasted 10 times over what those round apple cables use. Only as of recently has the connector end start to wiggle.
I'm pretty sure they're more likely to remove the charging port and go fully wireless
nuh, how in that case they going to sell you adapters? Hmm, actually they can make 399$ wireless USB adapter for your MacBook. So MacBook won't have any ports, but there will be separated device for 399$ with usb port on it that connects to MacBook and works and usb port. Actually, you can make even better if that would be type-c USB, so you will also need USB-USB-type-C adapter
I mostly own USB C devices ... I'll only say this: IT'S AWESOME!
I agree. Beefier power, data speed. Too bad they couldn’t find a way to do this on the Lightning though, which I consider a way more durable connection.
Kwarkool I had no idea that PD USB-C had a data speed so slow. Is this true? I’ll have to look that one up. So many USB-C “standards” to choose from.
@@johnnydfred It isn't. Try using a MacBook USB-C Charger for data and it's no slower than lightning. Very crowded with all the different standards though.

Einstein WasRight this is so true.
I still prefer lightning because it’s easier to clean the connector if anything gets in
Einstein WasRight spittin straight facts

Ummm... the lightning connector itself fails quickly and often.

The money from cables and adapters is irrelevant for a company this size.
Mik S lol. Shut up. It is true. Every penny counts. They have to turn a larger profit every year and they have to answer to investor. Once that is the goal, it is a race to find ways to squeeze more money out of customers.
Mike Magana
I know many people doesn’t understand it, but it is really quite simple.

Did this guy just say apple only makes "a rounding error" worth of money from licensing dongles adapters and cables? Is this guy serious?
@Blaine Murphy yeah but nobody is saying that selling dongles and cables was or will ever make what apple makes on their devices being sold
Honestly I think you need to take a more objective view, its incredibly blatant there really isn't much of an argument to make
This is the most impressive animatronics display to date. Very convincing!
All I know is that I can plug the 3.5" audio connector for my earphones into my iPhone 6s in the dark without any issues but I cannot do the same with the lightning cable.

The worst thing about lightning cable for me? It's structural weakness. I don't know how many lightning cables I've replaced over the years in comparison to USB cables only being replaced once after jamming the cable in a car glove box.

It’s a bit of a stretch to suggest Apple use lightning to USB A to accomodate for all the windows laptop users... especially when they removed the headphone jack when hardly any of their customers used Bluetooth headphones and most used wired.
People: omg, the Lighting port (2012) is SOOoOoo outdated.
Also people: nOoOo, the headphone (late 19th century) is not outdated aT AlL!
Me:...
Go away, reddit
I still think that Lightning is a far better thought out product than USB-C. Lightning port is just a hole and usb-c port is a hole with a tiny stick in it. You plug the cord in it unattentively or jerk the cord while plugged and you break that tiny stick in there. And your device goes to service. Very stupid
They finally made a port that 95% faild on the plug side. Price a plug at an inconvenient but affordable $30 to avoid complaints. Profit
Apple please let me charge my phone, Mac and iPad with the same cable...
I know i am a super niche nerd, but I would love it
Nope. You're supposed to give Apple more $$$ for all the different cables and dongles. That's the Apple way.
I actually like lighting port. It’s so nice and snug when plugged in. Well I don’t do allot of data transferring. That’s why.
The problem is that usb-c is just not a good connector physically. It is not sturdy enough.
Also it is sad that apple gave up the magnetic connector on the power cord. That was genius.
I have a feeling that they gave up the mag connector because they knew that they would be selling more extended warranties on the new MacBook Pro's too
Why or how exactly isn't the USB-C sturdy enough?
It's been used for years now and I can't recall any major problems with it
not all cables are created equally... also some are, "destroyers" of cables ... or phones.

Try finding a multi port usb c charger and you’ll notice that most of what’s available gives you only 1, maybe 2 usb c ports with all the rest being usb a. How long will it be before we get affordable 5 or more usb c ports on a single charger?

murfad I have micro usb cables from 2011 but there have been quite a few that have broken on me where they don’t charge unless held a certain way. More durable than Apple’s lightning cables for sure but not perfect and it depends on the user and how careful they are with their cables.

I've only needed to replace one charging cord - and it wasn't even the charge cord that came with the phone. It was a backup cheap cord I got on Amazon. TBH I still prefer lightning over USB-C. Just wished Fast charging was available on lightning.
How the hell fast do you need charging to be?
God that must suck! Can't love without my 40W, 10 minutes of charge to 65-70% and that charge is solid for at least 2 full days on the 4300Mah. At full charge I'm going well over 3 days before battery level critical warnings.
I think it’s great that you do these kinds of videos to set the record straight and provide backstory on the details. Keep it up!
Thunderbolt is now open sourced and will be used in USB 4
I’m Mexican and i don’t know I’m
using the correct terms but something that I hate about USB-C is that in my case, the ports and the cables are getting everyday more and more loose, and that didn’t happen me with lighting and USB-A.

Or... or....

Here's why USB is better
1. Its not proprietary

3. Its cheaper because it's not proprietary
4. It can do everything lightning can along with USB 3 Gen 2 data speeds

There's just some sweet satisfaction unplugging your usb-c laptop charger into your phone ... ahhh "This is liv'n" (yeah I'm talking Note 9 here)
Lightning cables do break more than usb-c cables.
RadicalxEdward that’s why wireless charging is a must nowadays

I’ve used the same cable for my phone and iPad for 2 years and it isn’t broken yet.
Rene, another home run. Can't imagine you make video so nicely, thanks!

TheOtioseFanatic exactly!! Lighting might not have the best specs but it’s easily the most durable out there and that’s what i care about above all
