The materials you find are not only required to upgrade your weapons and armor it's used to upgrade each factions shops. Each shop has 4 ranks while the one used to upgrade and enchant weapons and armor has 10 ranks. Those little memento items? Those are what is required to get power for it. Doing side quests for each faction gets you points.
