- In this video I share how you can make your own electric piston ring filer out of a $20 grinder.
I bought oversized piston rings for my 4G63 engine and need to gap them. Rather than purchase a piston ring filer, I decided instead to build my own.

Excellent! Best of luck with it. It’s much easier indeed but beware not to rush it and overheat the ends. (Honestly didn’t know that was an issue until reading comments) Hope my motor doesn’t ‘splode. 😂

My piston was sticky 1/2 up the cylinder. This video has helped in that I need to file a tiny bit off the end of the ring. I might buy a manual ring grinder....but your HF grinder was a great idea. Thank you for this video.

Love your approach and your ability to cope with "issues". I buy far too many parts online and have suffered the consequences too. I'd bet money that any local parts counter guy worth his gaskets would have alerted you to the whole wiseco incompatibility issue. It was news to me as well. If the gap is to tight you'll break the piston when it heats up and the ring expands. Alternate the gap 180 degrees for each ring, and file off any burrs.

Tidbit of info though:
~take material from one side of the gap not both
~always make sure your material is being machined from the outside to the inside of the ring
Thank you! Could you clarify your second point? It’s too late for me on this motor but I’m still intrigued. And perhaps others will read.
@@GarageFab the second point is to be precautionary. When setting up the ring on your filer, you want the rotation of the blade/file to be toward the inside diameter of the ring. This will lessen the chance of flaking off the molly coating that's applied to the ring and it will prevent a lot of the burring you find after filing the gap. This is precautionary, chances are yours will be ok, you can inspect them though for this flaking.
I’m assuming that flaking would be a possibility either way, it would just flake the inside. But a small piece of missing material inside the ring groove would potentially be less concerning than it would on the outside. 🤔

When I was rebuilding my EJ255 I also faced a rings issue
I had to combine NPR and Hastings rings at the end, engine is working well now and doesn't have oil consumption.
That’s crazy! Like one brand ring in one cylinder and a different brand in others? Or different brands in the same cylinder? Either way glad things worked out.
I finally got the rings figured out (no thanks to STM tuned) after dumping over $700 into just rings. That episode will come eventually.

My rings issue was in a wrong filler gap, Hastings had almost 1mm instead of 0.4-0.5mm.
You should only work the ring on one side not both

@@GarageFab to make sure you keep the ends square , if you work the one side only you can close the ring and check the worked side to the side that's not worked to make sure it stays square to one another , hope it makes sense , keep safe ✌

That makes sense. I don’t size rings often so I just assumed the ends matching each other would be more important than the angle. And since this tool is hand-made and likely imperfect, trimming each side a bit would provide a better match. Thank you for the kind words!

It's happening! I'll be using a Mustang on this truck but I've decided to do the Mighty Max axle at the same time for the video.
Hey stuff like this happens to all of us! Just like my simple engine swap of 2 4.7 Dodge engines from the same year, nothing is as simple as it seems. Dodge changed the PCM in the middle of the year, changing the tone rings on the crank and left camshaft. I had to tear both engines completely down to swap them! Stuff happens!

Lemme know how that works! I’ve heard a few folks say that’s the only right way of doing it because a powered grinder will overheat the rings. 🤷♂️
I was going to connect a power drill to the arm of the piston file that rotates.. it has a screw that sticks out and I can Tighten the mouth of the power drill around that screw and set it at a low speed...I'll use The reverse option on the drill to grind it counter clockwise...

Just wondering were the original oil control rings worn enough to not control the oil or could they be reused with the new compression rings?
To the naked eye, I couldn’t tell if if they were worn. However, the Eclipse was smoking really bad which is why I decided to rebuild the engine in the first place. So of all the rings, those were probably the cause. 🙌
The engine would esplode and kill everyone!

You should make the "Table" 90 degrees to the cutting wheel so you are filing the ring square and not at an angle!!

@@GarageFab At around the 6:20 mark the way the plate attaches to the grinder it looks like it's mounted at an angle which would throw off you grinding angle on the rings. I've re-watched a few times and it could be just the way it looks?
I think it’s an optical illusion! The piece of scrap metal I had laying around was a parallelogram. (Diamond shaped kinda) the blade is 90° from the plate and the ring stops (Allen Bolts) are 90° from the blade slot. The weird shaped table throws everything off visually. 🧐

Will this work on a briggs flat head for all 3 rings
I honestly don’t know! I don’t have much experience with smaller motors. In the little bit of research I did on the Briggs motor, the oil ring looks like a single piece and really thick. I don’t see why this tool wouldn’t help. I would just suggest that you have more patience with that ring since more material will trim slower and forcing it will overheat it.
These are all educated guesses and guessing often doesn’t go well when rebuilding engines. I wish I could help more. 😞

That totally sucks. So what is the fix? Wiseco pistons? Or maybe just OEM oil rings?
Video hasn’t been released yet so you get a look into the future. The pistons were in great shape so I had to buy a 3rd set of rings. I got lucky and found some Mitsubishi rings on eBay thankfully since I was told they’re no longer in production. The seller must’ve known this because he got me for nearly $300. Still cheaper than Wiseco pistons. I only want to do one more engine video and I’ve hit more snags so it’ll be a while till it comes out.
@@GarageFab Sorry to hear about the snags. Building engines - especially older ones off the beaten path, is usually fraught with disaster after disaster. I hope its nothing too major.
Haha Right! I think it’ll be ok. Just bad planning on my part. I apparently bought a less popular Eclipse that’s not usually swapped into the Mighty Max. I’ll be fabricating engine parts for the first time in my life. Just another opportunity to learn!
@@GarageFab I had the exact same issue on my 68 C10. I thought I was being slick by using 1990 spindles on it so I could have stock 1995 6 lug rotors....that part all went great...I had 6 lug all the way around....BUT...I created a positive camber issue that could not be adjusted out...like 5 degrees of positive camber. So now I am moving back to 79 spindles, custom 6 lug CPP rotors, and as soon as I get new 79 lower control arms (no longer available except from LMC for 150 EACH) I will be back on track.....UGGGGGG

The Z was completed in Episode 5. Then we took a LONG break from the front. We don’t see the front end again until Episode 18.

8:28 - Using an angle grinder is a VERY bad idea as you see (blue tinted ring ends = you overheated a ring, and RUINED its temper). This ring is ruined. It is why those grinders are hand powered - to prevent generating to much heat during operation.
Bummer. Guess it’s a good thing they didn’t fit anyway. I imagine their lack of temper won’t be a problem in the trash.

@@GarageFab No problem - you have awesome channel i like it. Remember also - too large taper, made when you're deburring ends have a huge impact for blow-by. You have to avoid making tapers or phasing edges when deburring ring ends.
Except they make powered ring filers as well.. which spin at 3,000 RPM. Don't press hard and this will be fine...
