For 1st timers using the "manual" ring gap file, it is very important you spin the wheel in the direction that you're cutting in towards the center of the ring, never outward, to prevent chipping the coating on the ring. Also, only apply enough pressure that it is barley filing material off or you may damage the ring. Make sure you oil the cylinder with light oil or WD40, don't get crazy with oil, just need the tiniest film to keep from scratching cylinder while taking ring in and out checking gap. Too much oil, you are actually causing oil between ring and cylinder to give an improper gap measure. If you'er using motor oil, wipe on with finger and then wipe off with a clean rag, leaving the tiniest bit of oil on the cylinder. Goes the same while installing pistons.
I'd just add start with the second rings first otherwise I'd just about guarantee you'll over file them if you start the uppers. Also count your turns it will save you time.
Rubbish! i filed my moly rings with a hand file got excellent compression and no issues for years after the engine shop that built my bottom end made the gaps to small and broke a ring you don't need a fancy ring filing machine at all.............
@@duncanfelton5311 This is true. I have filed rings without a ring filer with no problem. It's just easier and quicker with the little cheap filer.Sad about that engine shop that failed to gap rings correctly. They had to know, they were just slobs.
I like the way you put that, to tight is definitely bad, but don’t go super super loose. You can put some serious gap in with no blow by issues. I think it’s best to go on the big side for a strong runner. It just seems like cheap insurance with no downside.
As a bit of a nub these vids are appreciated, but 90% of the ppl watching this don't have all the nice tools and will click out and have to search for another one.
Thank you! I think blew a piston ring on my ls6 on cylinder 7 ! I'm gonna pull the engine out of my c5 myself, never done this but I think it will be fun to work on. I'm not rushing it just take my time!
I am rebuilding my boat motor. I was able to hone out all of the scratches. However, specs call for ring end gap of .011 to .023. The top and bottom cylinder are .023 at the top and .025 in the middle and .023 at the bottom. The middle cylinder is .025 at the top .030 in the middle and .026 at the bottom. It says it can be .002 difference in dia. and each .001 in dia. = .003 in ring end gap. Do I need to have this bored out? Just a note that is with brand new standard size rings.
Thank you for your videos buddy, im doing my first build question? I'm planning just to hone/crosshatch my bore should I go with oem specs? I do want to add some boost in the future Thanks and for sure a new follower 🍻

You always file the burr towards the back or inside of the ring... You didn't say anything about the burr causing scratches in the cylinder wall if you do not remove the burr, damage?
Great video, I learn something from every video. I would like to see the proper fitment and trimming process on a cam button on an older SBC block, and how to get and figure and adjust for proper clearance to the timing cover. I don’t feel that the nylon buttons will hold up well so I’m referring to the metal bearing buttons. Thanx in advance 👍
@@JacobVillemain if it has to be trimmed what tools can you use or are there a variety of sizes available. There’s not one video showing how to trim a metal bearing button, you would have the one and only video😃
30-thou on the 2nd-ring... and ....the top oil-scraper . It stops 'flutter'/ oscillation between the two compression-rings and stops 'land-wear' . It's Very-important on any high-hp engine or even a standard one that gets-pushed ...and yes , it does affect performance and engine-viability over time

Cool now I see what I have to do now does that mean for any ring set that r file to fit an total seal rings reson I ask is street/strip .30 over 350 all forged gaping for nitrous is that same way to gap or different
Great video.....I'm only lacking the $1500 ABS ring filer to make that job less MISERABLE than it actually is....We use abrasive sharpening stones to dress our rings after filing them.
would have liked you to tell us not to push the feller gauge up and down in the bore but to come at the gap from the side so as not to move the ring in the bore causing inaccurate gapping..... other than that great clear vid........thank you
For a one time engine you can get away with the hand crank filers, but anything production will require an electric motor one. Check out Summit Racing’s offers.
Nothing towards you....It occurred to me that there are more variables than what the piece of paper recommendations provide; such as rod ratio, different block/engine material combinations, engine coatings (heat management) even cooling considerations in components and fluids, and changes in aerodynamics, body design and airflow priorities over the decades...If a piston/rod angle can lose power at higher rpm, and even scuff or knock the walls somewhat (even that coatings are encouraged) along with the aforementioned thermal variations, the rings are often getting worked in uncommon performance builds, that may lead to failure in general building parameters.
I am getting a lot of conflicting information from people smarter than myself, and even though I am not of fan of reaching out to people online, I feel that I would trust your opinion. I put together a 408 that will end up boosted. Despite the recommended ring gap by wiseco, I was told to do. 028 on both rings. I have 210 psi cylinder pressure with about 20% loss on an old snap on leak down tester. And about 14 using the double gage method. There is quite a lot of crank case pressure (as to be expected) what do you think of all of this. Thanks for your input.
I always add .002 to whatever the top ring is supposed to be… For example, my 1st ring is .020, second is .022… Old timer blown alcohol guy told me that…

moly rings file pretty easy. You'll have fun with a gas nitrided ring and a hand file. @@duncanfelton5311

Hi, question this is the same procedure with the four cylinder engine?
What brand ring filer do you use. Thank you
That Engine Guy what would be the proper ring gap on a 2002 N/A Cammed 5.3 LS

Can you show us how to properly degree your cam? preferably a LS engine.

Why do I not have Japanese manufacturers
RIK TPR NPR to do these procedures?

Now a question.
May I ask what is engine warm up period or is it start n drive away?.
Cheers.
what do you when the gap is to big?

Do they have this chart for small engines?
How do you calculate what the size the turbine wheel and ar for a specific engine
I am at this phase of my build, my oil ring is too big for the bore, do I file it the same way?

What ring gap would you recommend I will be running 14lbs of boost plus 50 to around 100 shot of nitrous what would be your honest opinion

I have a general rule of 0.007 of an inch for every inch of bore space for boosted engines.

I’m such a child, sorry 🤣

What would you think if a so called professional engine builder, gapped my (4 inch bore) rings, at 0.007?
I would think he didn't bother checking just threw the engine together. Not a builder he's an assembler.

This video was intended for 99% of every engine. The 1% you are talking about does not apply for what I showed here.
The paper has recommendations that will fit 90% of applications. You are looking too much into it.
