  • @AthenDeValius

Like too many others it seems, I found this song and JTE's music the day after he tragically passed. That day I was struck by the fact that Justin was just six months older than I am. When I was in my early twenties, I lost a best friend to suicide, an on/off girlfriend to opioids before the epidemic, and in college working at a burger restaurant, I was the one that opened and found our maintenance man whom I deeply respected had slipped, hit his head, and passed away. After police & medics cleared the scene, I remember sobbing as I cleaned up, being the one, because then you never forget.
It's 5am now and I can't sleep. Years pass and I flipped burgers through my 20s till I fought far enough, hard enough, to become an engineer. It's 5am, and I am sobbing in an empty room again. There's a pandemic that has had me WFH since March, keeping distance since my wife is a doctor working with COVID-19 patients if/when they need and I cant carry the idea I could get anyone else sick. For a week now, wildfires have left a smoke hazy over Seattle. And we're 50 days from an election that is so volatile that I disabled my Facebook over two months ago just to breath. It's 5am and I can't help thinking there was a tavern out there where Justin was playing. Probably somewhere in Ballard or Capital Hill. I'm on my second Mac & Jack, and he starts into this song. I think to myself, after the show I am buying this album, but I listen quietly with everyone else, tapping my foot to the sound. Listening to the lyrics, I note I am not frightened, but that he gets "it" even if I cannot articulate what "it" is. That moment that never happened, I can feel it's loss like so many other moments. That even though I have fought to make it from "there" to "here" that there's no way to stop a lifetime of losses along the way. It's 5am and this is not the first, nor the last, time I have woke for no reason, cried in an empty room alone, will go back to bed and push through another day.
There is so much beauty in this world, and it hurts went it's lost. RIP, Justin, and thank you for offering something to the world that made it a bit better.

    [Verse 1]
    Silence broken
    Thunder roll
    Followed by the bright light
    From a lightning strike
    Wind is pickin' up
    To a low moan
    Feel the pressure drop
    Rain start and stop
    [Chorus]
    Storm coming
No way it's gonna miss us now
    Storm coming
Don't be frightened by the sound
    [Verse 2]
    Moment of silence
    Uneasy still
    Then come the steady rain
    Hard against the window pane
But keep an eye on the river
    It's already up
There's no need to worry yet
    Let us not forget
    That last time rain
    Come down like this
    So much was lost
We'll never know the true cost
    Chorus]
    Storm's coming
No way it's gonna miss us now
    Storm coming
Don't be frightened by the sound
    [Bridge]
    There's so much at stake
    How far will it go?
Only a fool would place such a bet
On which way the winds will blow
    [Verse 3]
    There's no way of knowing
    What the damage will be
We can't just live on hope
    We'll never get out alone
    [Chorus]
    Storm coming
No way it's gonna miss us now
    Storm coming
Don't be frightened by the sound of it
Don't be frightened by the sound

YOU WILL HEAL I PROMISE. I say this after my whole entire family is in the ground and been there for 15 plus years now. Time heals all wounds if you allow it to do so. I am very sorry for your great loss. Try not to drink at all, it just makes it worse in the end and creates resentment and bad feelings. I decided to drink myself close to the grave because I just didn't care anymore. Then something changed and I put down the bottle for good.

Why do so many people refuse to allow love to heal them?

Because it's not about love, love cannot help anyone who has a mental illness. Sadly most self medicate, whatever drug makes them feel warmth inside , maybe to stop body tremors, to forget each person is different. Living with a person whether it be your mother , your father, husband etc is so fucking hard, it don't matter what you say to them, you can't even say stop, because they either are unable or chose not to. The most weird thing is when you are younger you swear to yourself that you are not being to become like one of your parents for example. But you don't realise that the spouse you married, had the same addiction as your parent. You don't see it at first, as they hide it from you, but as the years go by the penny drops , you see that omg they have to have a beer in the morning, a spliff , to get the body to function. Outside your own 4 walls people think your man is great, they don't see them totally out of it, their mood swings, their paranoia, their sleep disturbed by flash backs, you see the horror caused by the hard drugs they took in their early teenage years The brain is a complex organ. Love does not cure but I wish to hell it was, then great men like JTE, Amy Winehouse, Prince, River Phoenix and many other great artists would still be alive today.

A lot of his songs remind me of bruce..'Roger's park' 'working for the MTA' and of course his cover of 'racing in the street' is fantastic..as JTE said himself 'bruce is always talking bout tryina get girls into cars I thought I'd try write on of those myself!'
