Once compared to a man who wears many suits, in thirty-two short years Justin Townes Earle has experienced more than most, both personally and professionally. Between releasing four full-length-critically-acclaimed albums, constant touring, multiple stints in rehab, a new found sobriety, being born Steve Earle’s son, amicable and not-so-amicable break-ups with record labels, and facing the trials and tribulations of everyday life, it’s safe to say JTE has quite the story to tell. His fifth album (and first ever on Vagrant Records) serves as the perfect platform for such narrations.
Entitled Single Mothers, the album is comprised of ten tracks that showcase exactly why Justin Townes Earle is considered a forefather of Contemporary Americana. As a recently married, sober man JTE writes from a point of maturity and content we’ve not seen before on past records. “One day I just realized it’s not cool to die young, and it’s even less cool to die after 30,” Justin states as he reflects on a life past and his newly found clarity. What he’s created is an album that’s raw, honest and personal in a way he hasn’t touched upon since his debut EP, Yuma.
Co-produced along side longtime engineer Adam Bednarik, Single Mothers shines in a world of pop-culture driven Ameri- cana records. “I don’t really know what Americana means anymore,” Justin laughs. “That’s not a slant on Americana, it’s just become a very unclassifiable genre. It’s gone seemingly pop. There are good parts to that, but it’s getting to a point where it won’t be able to redeem itself if it doesn’t slow down. Just like everything that gets popular.” With his heart and soul still rooted in Nashville, Single Mothers shows Justin’s continued combination of catchy songs and authenticity.
The album was recorded live with his four-piece touring band with only days of rehearsal leading up to recording to keep the ideas fresh. No overdubs, no other singers, no additional players - just a real, heartfelt performance capturing the moment. In fact, his songs “Picture in a Drawer’ and ‘It’s Cold in This House’ are only Justin, his guitar and his pedal steel player Paul Niehaus.
Earle’s new perspective is clear on Single Mothers as it opens with the track ‘Worried Bout The Weather,’ where we see the intimate, sensitive side of JTE. Here Justin rehashes feelings of trouble on the horizon singing “it don’t take a twister to wreck a home, don’t take a night to feel like you’re in the dark and all alone” - a theme that has surfaced before in his lyrics, but this time with a personal honesty and openness. Justin’s mood switches gears on the upbeat track ‘My Baby Drives.’ “My baby drives me to church on Sundays, take me to see my Momma on every other Monday. Some might say I’m the luckiest man alive,” Justin croons light heartedly. On the title track ‘Single Mothers’ we hear feelings of resentment as JTE growls, “absent father, never offer even a dollar, he doesn’t seem to be bothered by the fact that he’s forfeited his rights to his own. Absent father is long gone.”
“As I’ve gotten older my anger comes from a very different place. It’s more rational and mature. I guess that comes along with clarity,” JTE reflects. Single Mothers finds Justin dealing with past struggles and anger with more ease than ever before. Creating a nostalgic feeling with the return to his signature sound, JTE takes listeners on a journey through some of his most personal stories yet on what can only be described as an authentic country record. #hamburgerküchensessions
Fantastic !!! ❤
Watching this video , I get a sense of just how hard he was struggling with his demons. Even as he is finishing this song, the look in his eyes is painful to see. There seems to be so much he is saying without words here. He just looks so sad . I just wanted to reach out and give this young man a big hug. RIP Justin
Gee whiz
For me, the key difference between the original and Earle’s cover is the tone, and particularly the way Graceland is framed. Whereas Paul Simon’s version frames reaching Graceland as a beautiful opportunity, and reaching it a joyous process of overcoming hardship, Earle seems to view it as a last refuge amidst irreparable turmoil, and the process of getting there as an arduous march through that turmoil.
Amazing cover that hits hard knowing the context. May he rest in peace.
Well said
Working for Justin for 2 years -- during time he released "Yuma" -- I am mesmerized by Justin's interpretation & version of "Graceland." I play it often.
That's the brilliance of him, interpreting a song so completely
I’m a little late seeing this comment, but I was saying the same thing the other day. I listened to Justin’s version, then the Paul Simon original (which I dig, just not as much) and thought that Paul’s sounds hopeful, that Graceland is a place of redemption and salvation. Justin’s sounds desperate, like Graceland is his last ditch effort of finding whatever he’s searching for. It’s hauntingly beautiful.
I’m happy we live in an era where he lives on infinitely through these recordings; but man, the world misses him 💔
Man... it ain't easy to do a better job than Simon on his own stuff. RIP, Justin. I love you.
I never thought I'd hear a better version, but I love this so much.
But it’s not better than Paul Simon’s version.
@@davidjenkins8718 but it is, that's the thing. This makes the original sound emotionless. Like it was written for an insurance commercial.
@@davidjenkins8718 cool and edgy though, very cool and edgy. Let's give him a round of applause for his empty, subjective chime-in, folks. Edgy and coooool.
@@agentelvis81 Awww, you’re the easily offended type, huh? That’s just precious.
I understand what he went through because I chased the same demons. Great talent great loss.
This is the version of Graceland for me. It’s like Cash with Hurt. Rest in peace Justin.
RIP JTE. Heartbroken
Those that have lived with pain and fear and in the midst offer their voices as comfort and understanding to us other troubled soul's should be mourned and offered tribute. I will try harder to practice empathy as tribute to Mr. Earle as I mourn his passing.
Kind and wise words, John. Peace and love from Scotland. 👍🏴
@@graham1745 thank you and the same to you Sir.
Quite a soul this kid had. He shines in another dimension.
Brilliant
Man, just tears your heart right out. Rest in Graceland, JTE.
Yes it does
I can’t get his passing out my head. I’m shocked and will forever miss his tortured talent. I guess we always knew this could be his fate....Thanks for the music you left for us all.
I feel the same way. We loved him so much and it was always tinged with fear that he would vanish at any moment... There is an amazing interview that just came out (Broken Record Podcast) and you can hear how he saw the world in a more real way than most people ever will... He saw people with all their faults and in all their pain and he still loved them.
Right with you on this. Feeling kind of empty and can't go two minutes without thinking about him. A testament to his enormous talent, I guess.
His Dad is doing a tribute album. I think that given all the subtle notions of respect and nods to his Dad that Justin had sprinkled throughout his short career, it will turn out to really be something special. I could not even begin to imagine or to put myself in Steve Earle's shoes.
He wondered about it himself. "Why do I try my luck? I should never touch the stuff."
drugs. almost always drugs. wish they would learn.
Fucker made me cry ❤ this performance (and others) are at times upsetting because you get a glimpse of the struggle and pain from his inner turmoil. Even that little glimpse is enough to break your heart. I hope he’s at peace, but I also wish he was still here.
So extremely grateful and humbled to have had the honor of seeing him perform several times throughout his tragically short life. Catching him at ground zero, performing with his pops in the early days, and witnessing him finding his own uniquely uncompromising and beautiful voice. Not every show was great. But it was never anything but real. And when it was great, it was transcendent.
Saw him once at the Musical Instruments Museum in Phoenix. Sat about two rows up. One of the only times I’ve ever been star struck, which he would’ve hated, lol. He was really special. Sad.
I won tickets to a local folk fest off a radio station. It was a thursday night and i work early mornings. Bruce Hornsby was on that night so I took my gf. Never heard of JTE but he was playing in the tent next to main stage before Bruce was on so we went in to check it out. First thing I noticed was how tall and skinny he was. Tatted up arms and a face like an accountant from a movie. He was playing with 2 redheads and the place was rocking. Turned me into an instant fan. 10 years later i read of his passing and consider myself blessed to have been one of the many lucky ones to have experienced your energy first hand. RIP JTE
I never got to hear him live unfortunately. 😢
Miss you every day man
Had the luck to see him several times in small venues. Truly an incredible performer and lyricist.
That was perfection.
Beautiful song done with true heart. So sad - what a loss of such a talented human being.
Gonna miss you young man 😢
R.I.P. Justin Townes Earle.
This song makes me cry every dang time I hear it, particularly the way Justin sang it.
This was a gut punch....in a beautiful, tragic way....Some souls are too beautiful for this age we live in. You were one of those JTE.
This popped up on spotify recently in the car and blew me away-- I"m a fan forever more RIP JTE
Rest Well Justin, we will miss you so much!
❤️❤️❤️ Justin with is guitar & beautiful voice is amazing.
Nice way to start my day
Heartbreaking and sublime.
Brings me to tears. I saw part of his show at The Harvester in Rocky Mount, Va. His soul was tortured by the norms of our society.
I wouldn't call Justins career short for one secound as someone mentioned.
All his songs, albums are masterpieces.
There are some musicians that sort of act as a conduit and music effortlessly flows through them. Then there are others where the music is so bound to their physical being that every word is chewed before being delivered, every strum is a swing of a pick axe, and every song is the last sermon they will ever give.
Such sadness. Hope you're at peace now, Justin.
The best cover eva.rip love to tge family sorry 4yuo lost ciccio 71
Amazing. Unforgettable. A year on, RIP JTE, and thanks Paul Simon.
Eternal Father, I offer thee the most precious blood of thy divine son, Jesus, in union with all the holy masses said throughout the world today, for the repose of the soul of Justin TE.
repeat ad infinitum ...
Miss Justin so much. Left us far to soon x
Sweet Sweet Soul Man. RIP Justin. Much love from all of us in Texas!
This was so beautiful, it brought me to tears. Rest in peace, JTE.
He was truly one of the all time GREATS.Thats just how it is .RIP old friend .you won't be forgotten.
This made me cry it's so beautiful..
RiP Sir.
your right I love it
Listen to any cover song JTE has done and guranteed it's better than the original. The arrangement, the delivery, the emotion, it's all their. Perfection
RIP genius. Soooo missed..
My god, I am just revisiting an old friend for obvious reasons, but I missed out on this one in recent years. 😭😭
I hope you found Graceland Justin. I hope it was everything you needed it to be. We miss you brother. ❤
I just heard on the radio about his passing a week ago. I thought of this song because there’s so much emotion in the way he performs it. R.I.P.
Golden
May we all remember to do what we can for people who are in pain and who hurt themselves in an attempt to stop the pain...in remembrance of Jùstin if nothing else. Rest easy JTE
Justin reminds me of a few others who have gone way too soon. I could be wrong but that is I don't think he realized how much his music meant to so many people. Speaking for myself his music meant a whole lot. Thank you for the tunes Justin.
Thank you, JTE
This song was featured on KXCI 91.3 in Tucson
Damn... So Sad to hear that he passed. I only just discovered Justin TODAY when searching for acoustic guitar versions of songs. And his rendering of a VERY difficult and complex song of Paul Simon's made me stop in my tracks. I listened to it maybe 10 times already. Justin gives me so much inspiration.
This song reminds me of my youth in the late 80's,... Even in So Cal, why not ?
One of my favorite songs.
This is so close to the sentiment I have come to understand, that the cost of such gifts is sometimes a burden which exacts payment at demise of some souls.
Damn, But I Surely Miss This Boy
My very favorite version of this song. I miss this guy.
Thank you. You comment honors us!
@@HamburgerKuechensessions I want to find/hear MUCH more Hamburger Kuechensessions!

My god this is stunning.
need a full band for graceland, with harmonies and instruments!!
Love you, Justin. You're greatly missed.
Danke, schöne Aufnahme von JTEarle. Die Stimme, sein neues Album "Kids in the Street" und auch die anderen Alben sind es wert gehört zu werden🎶✨👍🎶✨
RIP Justin. Did it have to be you?
Beautiful
May you rest, JTE. I loved your father. And now I love you.
Shelby, yes, it’s very upsetting that he’s passed on. However, his music will always be with us.
Too young, too soon😔
Maybe the best.
just keeps getting better........
Thanks, Amanda
pretty amazing from my point of view actually, his approach is always so visceral and somehow not magic, its absolutely real, but still magic. theres a thing he does about pulling the song up through his soul while he hammers it out of and onto the guitar......
Hamburg hat Dir bestimmt gut gefallen!! Machs gut Junge.....last man standing!!!!!
it's been a huge huge huge loss. Ciao Justin.
Thinking of you ♥️
I've been trying to cover his cover since I saw this and I'll never do it the justice he does in this performance. I'll always miss your takes, Justin.
RIP
Missed.
Thank you
Fckyou why have you gone so fahr... so great
This is still something.
Moin. Das hat mich gerade voll abgeholt 👍 Schade das ich meine Gänsepelle nicht filmen konnte. Klasse !! VG Vester
He did something cool with his eyes at 0:31!👀👀
Fly steady bro.......
Beautiful cover.... Vale JTE. So saddened to hear this news 🌹
I was reading an article about his passing. The author said to take a deep breath before watching this video. Justin just put so much emotion into it. He just pours out his soul. Only a true artist can do that.
@@LJH70122 I agree its incredible. So very talented, its just so sad. I used to see him walking down the street when he was on tour here in Melbourne. I regret not saying hello.
Fuck! If selfish. I know he ha had so much more. Rest easy Justin.
💔😢
RIP, Gone too soon. Sad sad new
❤️❤️❤️ 💖
❤️
Schön...
Too bad they could not have filmed it better but with eyes closed t is epic.
Thank you.
😭😭😭
Im always in pain
Some guy named Paul Simon did a cover of this. It was alright, but this original version is much better.
I made it 46 seconds in and it was just too painful ... he looks like someone who was really in need and he was afraid help wasn't coming ... and I guess it didn't.
JTE bought Jason Isbell suit he was married in... ‘nuf said.
Yea... Shame they had a falling out before he passed though.
dreamland by joni michell
So sad so sad
joni insinuated this song is a rip off. i forget which song -but shes right, the song is on her summer lawns record
Does anyone know where to find these tabs, his version always makes me sad and happy simultaneously
Tab for this - Frans Kuijpers fingerstyle, best fingerstyle on the net. Hope you find it Cheers John
i bet Paul Simon regrets covering this song now.
I came here because someone said this guy does the best version of Graceland. Unfortunately he doesn't, that honour belongs to Josh Turner Guitar. Go check for yourselves.!!
Such a waste of a great Talent , very sad .
❤️♥️♥️
