As a kid in the 2000s, while game graphics were looking drastically better year after year, I used to get really excited watching pre-rendered trailers because I thought it looked like what the game might look like in a few years on a new system.
Going off what John said at 3:50, my favorite use of CG in game trailers is the character trailers for Smash Bros. They set up the reveal really nicely and then follow it up with gameplay. It works because the characters have so much personality and people already have a connection to them, but that kind of thing is hard to replicate.
What I'm not okay with is pre-rendered footage _pretending to be actual gameplay_ (eg KillZone 2 PS3 trailer) If not taken seriously, i'm okay with cinematics.
I love looking at cinematics but I hate that it takes cinematics to evoke a targeted mood, if the game itself can’t reach the targeted mood than the trailer is all their to result in disappointment.

In a world full of super hero movies and pretty photorealistic CGI, it's no longer special. But I remember the CGI videos for Warcraft 3, it totally blew my mind.
