There is an interview with David Byrne and Spike Lee in this week’s Esquire magazine (they are collaborating on a film version of Byrne’s Broadway show), and Byrne talks about connecting to the audience. He originally trained as a visual artist, but was frustrated that his installations weren’t connecting with anybody. He formed Talking Heads just as a sideline because he was inspired by living around the corner from legendary punk club CBGB, and found for the first time that his band was actually connecting with people in a meaningful way. From that point he realized that music was to be his medium as an artist.

The Talking Heads formed in New Yorker University art school. They were the tail end of the New York punk scene before it became New Wave. David Brynes was totally a square and just embraces it and heightened it. Hence the horn rimmed glasses, over sized suits, stereotypical dorky dance moves. He was just like "you think I'm a square? Well fine I'll be a square and make some of the best music ever. Fuck you". I respect the hell out of that.

Al Green was Reverend Al Green; he was a minister, had a parish and began to focus on gospel music. That's how spiritual Mr. Green became after in the Memphis, Tennessee, home of singer Al Green in the early morning hours of October 18, 1974, when an ex-girlfriend burst in on him in the bath and poured a pot of scalding-hot grits on his back before retreating to a bedroom and shooting herself dead with Green's own gun. Not everyone, however, would have processed the meaning of the incident quite the way that Green did. Believing that he had strayed from the righteous musical and spiritual course intended for him, Al Green had become a born-again Christian one year earlier. But after the attack by Mary Woodson on this day in 1974, he began a process that would eventually lead him to renounce pop superstardom and all that it stood for. His version of this song is divine.

I watched it a few days ago, and I noticed that Jerry didn't look very happy. I wonder if being taken off of guitar for most of the show didn't sit well with him.

@@mgordon1100 In fact, Jerry was tired. Most of his appearances in the movies were shot the last gig. The morning of that particular gig, he had to get up very early for a business meeting no one else in the band wanted to attend. In the end, he got there, did nothing because the suits were talking between each others without paying much attention to the musician. He felt useless, bored and a little bit angry because he had to appear on camera that same evening... And now you know why he looks angry/tired at times.
Anyway, tired, angry or not, he delivers a few of his best ever solos in there, so...

I discovered talking heads in 1996. Just outta high school. The CD was only $6 at a used record store. The album cover pulled me in. I put it in the CD player in my car and it stayed there for a week or so. I just listened to it over and over and over again. My four kids have watched “stop making sense” several times with me. They all love the band and Byrnes solo stuff. My wife consistently states he is the best performing artist she’s ever seen. ( she wasn’t familiar with them/him until we got together ). The day Byrne leaves this plane of existence with be a soul crushing day for myself and millions of others. He’s a performance genius. So damn creative. Glad you’ve discovered them and are down the rabbit hole. Keep up the great work brother.

The first time I heard David Byrne and the Talking Heads I was hooked. The music is so funky, rhythmic, the songs funny, even today I want to get up and dance when I hear the songs. I was in the subway and he came in and stood in front of me. I was such a fan but did not say a word I wanted to tell him how much I loved his music but did not want to intrude on his privacy.

While it is good ... if I'd been at this concert, I think I would have felt cheated and a little let down, as I LOVE the studio version so much. However, the reality of it is that this is the Talking Heads and getting to see them live was probably a great experience (that I never got to do).

About 25 years ago, I had an assistant manager at the bookstore I worked at in the Chicago suburbs. She told me about the time she was at a pretty small club in the mid-‘70s in the city watching the Talking Heads before they hit it big. During one of the breaks, she started chatting with Tina Weymouth who was really happy to have another girl to talk to, so Tina invited C to join them when they went out clubbing after the show!

A version of this song is done, in front of Al, by Mavis Staples and Sam Moore, of Sam and Dave fame. All I can say is get ready for some good gospel vibes. Great channel Jamel!!! You're an inspiration to what's good about humanity.
