So true, a timeless artist from his music artwork and acting. Got to see him in Chicago when he was doing Elephant Man on stage. He signed my playbill was very kind and thoughtful to all who wait in the alleyway after the show. A true Renaissance Man
Took my mother to see him. She was 66 years old then and had been one of his biggest fans since the early 70's. We ended up with nosebleed seats so I took my enormous binoculars so she could see him. During a short break on stage David began waving and pointing up where we were sitting and mom started squealing and waving back. Apparently he noticed the reflections from the lenses (picture two huge purple eyeballs) and figured only a real fan would lug those things around just to see him. Whether he really was waving at her or not, that was one of the happiest moments of her life. There will never be another David Bowie. The man. The myth. The legend.
Someone once said of Bowie, "If there's one thing he can't stand it's to record an album that sounds exactly like the last one." That's probably what I respected most about him as an artist.
I recall hearing an interview with Bowie that he said he also didn’t think he had a great voice. And jamel, I think with dubbing they place each of the audio tracks over the other ? Not sure but it sounded good. Lol
"Is this man just by himself? How can he just jump in and out of 2 voices like he's 2 people?" Easy ..... David Bowie came from a generation of singers and performers, when they could ACTUALLY SING. No auto-tune, no audio touch-ups, etc. And Bowie was one the best. Absolute timeless Legend. RIP
"Musical chameleon" is right. After touring with Nine Inch Nails and hearing their sound, Bowie and Brian Eno - a longtime collaborator of his on songwriting - came up with "I'm Afraid of Americans," a song so much in Trent Reznor's NIN style that when Trent remixed it for the US single release, the end result REAAAALLY wasn't far off from the studio version. (The music video with Trent as "Jonny" is of the Nine Inch Nails "V1" remix.)
I think Prince has to be in that conversation too, but the two are similar: both composed a LOT of incredible music, had huge vocal ranges and played multiple instruments.
@HardNews TV4 Actually Vaughn was pissed because Bowie wouldn't give him billing on the Serious Moonlight Tour. Bowie in fact put Vaughn " on the map ".
@HardNews TV4 Check out the liner notes on Texas Flood; SRV thanks Bowie. If Bowie and NIle Rodgers hadn't seen SRV in Montreaux, SRV & Double Trouble might have spent another two or three years playing bars in Austin, San Antonio, Dallas and Houston. The fact is that SRV was not able to come to an arrangement on touring with Bowie on the subsequent Bowie tour because of his own commitments being on the brink of mega-stardom with Texas Flood getting ready to debut. Think about this: what would Layton and Shannon have done with SRV backing up Bowie all over the world for the next 10-14 months? "Fame" changed everything. It sounded SO different than anything that was out or that had come before. I'll never forget the first time I heard it come over the radio when I was a kid.
Hearing his records is a mere whiff of his intensity as a live performer - I first experienced Bowie live on his "Serious Moonlight " tour in '83-'84 which started me on a life long quest to experience him as often as I could - I lost track of my live Bowie concerts at 25 or 26 times, the last being the "Reality" tour in Atlanta, GA in 2004 - the single most exciting live performer I've ever witnessed (and I've seen hundreds, if not a thousand live concerts in my lifetime) Ultra talent is correct - never been anything like him before or since - so sad that he is gone - I was lucky enough to witness his superb talents many times
Cocaine is what really changed his voice. Watch him on Dick Cavett performing Young Americans... then listen to him just a year earlier. Different voice.
Bowie is the man! I was heartbroken when he passed. Fact: he wrote this song for Elvis(who he shares a birthday with) but it got rejected so he released it
According to some sources, John, this song was rejected but Elvis called Bowie & personally asked Bowie to produce his next album (after 1977) which he could've done because Bowie & Presley were both employed by RCA. (They also shared the same birth date -- not year).

If someone asked me for my definition of “cool,” I’d play them this song. Bowie was a master. Lucky to have seen him live in 2002. Onstage he was a magician of sound and vision. Check out one of my favorite songs/albums by him: “Station to Station.” It’s pretty epic. Was in his “thin white duke” stage persona at the time. Cheers!
I'm 58 yrs. old, took early retirement, walk with my head held high, could not care less what people think of me...and dance like a crazy person to songs like these before I go to bed. Never been happier. Maybe these are my 'Golden Years'!
I love these reactions, it's so fun to see someone really get into it. His voice is so incredible, and in the mid to late '70s he had a band with a monster of a rhythm section. The grooves in Station to Station are just brilliant.
The man was not a legend for nothing. He reinvented himself so many times, always coming in with a new style, and every time was something awesome. Pick any song, there are no disappointments here.
Hi Jamel, Bowie is the sound track to my life.He sung this on Soul Train-He was the second White artist to appear on the show - Elton John beat him to the number 1 spot.I was lucky enough to see him back in the early 80’s,he did not disappoint! Another Legend taken far too soon,RIP Mr Jones x
It's fantastic watching someone discover a Legend! Absolutely amazing voice, this is my all time favourite song! Don't forget the special eyes - gorgeous!
Bowie's natural singing voice was a higher end baritone, with a very pleasant and surprisingly high falsetto. Sounds like two people, but it's all Bowie. One of the greatest artists in rock music. Glad you enjoyed it, Bowie was a treasure.
There was a TV series in the 90s called Golden Years that used this song as its theme. Notable because it was written by Stephen King ( who is a huge Bowie fan). If you've read Firestarter, you might consider Golden Years to be a sequel as it features The Shop.
It's all about the falsetto brother J. He switches back and forth, was so good at it, especially since he's got that great low register too (ala Let's Dance). Great reaction as always, keep on rockin'🤘☮️
Probably my favorite Bowie track, mainly because of the funk production on it, Bowie does manage to give it an emotional punch raising it a level beyond the average pop tune. Your reactions are tight as usual.
Stevie Ray Vaughan's guitar solos on the tracks on "Let's Dance", including "China Girl". The film clips for several of these songs were made in Australia and the 'China Girl' is New Zealander Geeling Ng.
"How's he doin' this?" He's David Bowie-musical genius! This was from Bowie's Thin White Duke/Philadelphia soul era. The entire Station to Station album is excellent-check out TVC15, Station to Station, and Stay.
Bowie was an original innovater of voice overs. Check out some of his earlier stuff. Edit: Also, one his greatest strengths was to surround himself with massive talent. Maybe even over-looked talent.
He was known for recording his own backing tracks so yes, he frequently appears as his own backing singer. The wonderful Gail Ann Dorsey often provided them live.
This is my friend Eleanore's favorite Bowie song. I never paid much attention to this one over some of his other hits, but after she told me it was her favorite, I checked it out, and now it's really grown on me. I love it. :) Gotta love his uniqueness and versatility.
I recommend you do "Lazarus", off of his last album, "Blackstar" which he did when he knew he was dying. The song and video are chilling. The whole album is excellent and really unique.
By FAR the best tribute to Bowie after his untimely passing was Stings live tribute performance of " "Blackstar" - probably the closest we will ever hear to an actual live Bowie performance of the song.
“Lazarus” blew my mind. I listened to it soon after his death and chilling is a good word for it. What a singular talent Bowie was. What other big names from the 70s could make music like that in 2016?
Brother Jamel, you are on a roll. Bowie was a musical chameleon, his music changed which each album. The process is overdubbing. Recording successive tracks rewinding then laying down another layer of vocals.
I've been a big Bowie fan for a long time, and this tune is my fav. Your reactions are priceless - you've picked out all of the coolest parts of a great song.
He did a great job as Tesla in "The Prestige", but my favorite little recognized performance was as Pontius Pilot in " The Last Temptation of Christ". He was actually quite a gifted actor.

Hearing his records is a mere whiff of his intensity as a live performer - I first experienced Bowie live on his "Serious Moonlight " tour in '83-'84 which started me on a life long quest to experience him as often as I could - I lost track of my live Bowie concerts at 25 or 26 times, the last being the "Reality" tour in Atlanta, GA in 2004 - the single most exciting live performer I've ever witnessed (and I've seen hundreds, if not a thousand live concerts in my lifetime) Ultra talent is correct - never been anything like him before or since - so sad that he is gone - I was lucky enough to witness his superb talents many times
lucky you to see Bowie so many times. It is one regret that I never got to see him play live.
The clip of him on Johnny Carson is great. While Johnny is introducing him the crowd is going wild. And Johnny was like you better be good. Priceless.
“I don’t smoke cigarettes, but he’s got me thinking about it!”
🤣😂
Lol
Cocaine is what really changed his voice. Watch him on Dick Cavett performing Young Americans... then listen to him just a year earlier. Different voice.
Need me a Newport 💯
That picture totally makes me want to light a butt, too
THIS WAS 70s David Bowie ,, I DIG IT ,,
Bowie is the man!
@@lastrada52 i hear u i wasn't hating on Elvis dont care what anyone says if they are into him or not he is the king i was just speaking facts as are you✌ 2 great artists love them both
@@johnjedennett2206- Oh, I agree.
I also personally, don't think this song suited Elvis -- Bowie yes.
But it would've been nice to see what kind of production & songs would have come to that Elvis lp if Bowie had produced it. But we'll never know...
I do know to a degree Elvis had a "friendship" with Led Zeppelin, particularly Robert Plant. I wonder if Bowie would've brought them in. Nice fantasy.
@@lastrada52 indeed i think im just like you where we just appreciate the classic music that we got and have and not just with these two greats in Elvis and Bowie. Appreciate this little conversation mate bless you and thank you🤘✌
@@johnjedennett2206 - A pleasure John.
Cheers!
They used this song in the Heath Ledger movie
A Knights Tale.
Yep, the scene at the dance. This song made that particular scene my favorite in the whole movie.
It was also used in a Stephen King movie, although I'm not remembering the title at the moment..
Sir Ulrich Von Lichtenstein! One of my favorite movies. ❤️❤️❤️
One of my favorite movies and the dance to this song one of my favorite in that movie. The whole sound track to the movie is great.
@@lisarainbow9703 It was a tv show named, well, "Golden Years".
I'm 58 yrs. old, took early retirement, walk with my head held high, could not care less what people think of me...and dance like a crazy person to songs like these before I go to bed. Never been happier. Maybe these are my 'Golden Years'!
Right the f...k on! I don't need to be entertained or entertain anyone
I Hope I can achieve that!! Jealous!
I just saw this comment and I'm 54 and ...Man... This comment Brought a tear and a smile to my face🥲🥲🙂☺️☺️
I love these reactions, it's so fun to see someone really get into it. His voice is so incredible, and in the mid to late '70s he had a band with a monster of a rhythm section. The grooves in Station to Station are just brilliant.
David Bowie had such a range vocally! Nobody uses vibrato when they sing anymore. It sounds so good!
The man was not a legend for nothing. He reinvented himself so many times, always coming in with a new style, and every time was something awesome. Pick any song, there are no disappointments here.
I think if you look up David Bowie, it'll say: "He was smooth and cool as hell!"
The king of innovation. Some of the coolest sounds ever recorded. Sure do miss his song writing
Bowie is the "Picasso of rock n roll", Nile Rodgers said it and I couldn't agree more about this genius!!
The guy was genius, he couldn't be pigeon holed, check out Changes
He was the ultimate cool dude and way ahead of his time. A true legend.
Bowie is a genius, He writes & sings his own music, He's sooo beyond his yrs.
Had the good fortune to see him live twice, he never let me down, one of the best of all time
Welcome, sir, to the greatest musical rabbit hole that exists - enjoy the ride!
3:35 "how's he doing this?"
Ummmmmmmmm
BECAUSE (HE'S) A MAESTRO!!
You just dont hear music like this anymore. David Bowie was one of a very rare kind.
Big ups to guitarist Carlos Alomar bringin' the funk hard.
And Earl Slick too!
Hey Jamel, if you like this then check out Bowie’s “Fashion” - plenty of funk and ear candy in that classic jam!
It's all about the falsetto brother J. He switches back and forth, was so good at it, especially since he's got that great low register too (ala Let's Dance). Great reaction as always, keep on rockin'🤘☮️
David Bowie was way ahead of his time.
Probably my favorite Bowie track, mainly because of the funk production on it, Bowie does manage to give it an emotional punch raising it a level beyond the average pop tune. Your reactions are tight as usual.
Jamel, You'll like "Changes" "Fame" "Suffragette City" "Modern Love" and "China Girl"
Stevie Ray Vaughan's guitar solos on the tracks on "Let's Dance", including "China Girl". The film clips for several of these songs were made in Australia and the 'China Girl' is New Zealander Geeling Ng.
Stevie Ray was on China Girl.
STAY and REBEL,REBEL....
"How's he doin' this?" He's David Bowie-musical genius! This was from Bowie's Thin White Duke/Philadelphia soul era. The entire Station to Station album is excellent-check out TVC15, Station to Station, and Stay.
Christian Brasso TVC 15? Now we’re talking!
Amazing album
Bowie was an original innovater of voice overs. Check out some of his earlier stuff.
Edit: Also, one his greatest strengths was to surround himself with massive talent. Maybe even over-looked talent.
Like on this record, Luther Vandross in backing vocals anyone?
Stevie Ray Vaughn
David was amazing. His last album was completed as he was dying of cancer, and it's as mindblowing as anything else he ever did.
Great song 🎧🎶 Bowie doesn’t disappoint
HardNews TV4 Never knew that🎧🎶interesting
@@johndesalvo3969 Oooh, I haven't heard about that! Thanks for mentioning it -- I'll have to see if I can find it. I love Bowie and Sting. :)
Heroes would be a really amazing song!!
There is a great live version of Heroes.
Great song!!!!
David Bowie is one of my Top Faves and this song. You will love Young Americans and Fame for sure!
Luther Vandross and Nina Cherry! were his back-ups on most of the 70's records. He made their careers. I miss my Luther!
Huge Bowie fan here. Love your reaction to this! He has an amazing range!
Bowieeeeeeee!!!!! He was such a genius!
Yess!!!Jamal, David Bowie had the type of voice where he could sing Multiple PARTS!!! If you heard YOUNG AMERICANS!!! Same Basis!!!!
David re-worked "music" as we know it. Still has the spunk all these years later! Kudos for listening!
Side note: just so you know David Bowie was in Labyrinth 80's movie.
And The Man Who Fell to Earth.
And merry Christmas Mr Lawrence
He did a great job as Tesla in "The Prestige", but my favorite little recognized performance was as Pontius Pilot in " The Last Temptation of Christ". He was actually quite a gifted actor.
And The Hunger.
Kimberly Ferguson Was he ever! Lol! I remember the tight pants!
"This is some ultratalent right here". Yes sir, this is.
