It is a shame that Beethoven disliked Cosi fan Tutte, for being about infidelity. For this is Mozart and Da Ponte’s most marvelous opera. Cosi is full of very funny jokes, and of absolutely magical divine music. Soave sia il vento brings all who value love to tears it starts as a simple wish for a safe voyage. Indeed that is the message the first time through. But the second time they sing those marvelous lyrics by da Ponte, it changes meaning completely by the addition of a single chord by Mozart on the word “desir” the addition of this magical chord transforms desir from a wish for a safe voyage, to sexual desire. Soon the women swoon and melt into delight over the anticipation of making love to their lovers.
What a dirty trick these men concocted to test the fidelity of their loves. I always feel it serves them right when the sisters fall madly in love with each others boyfriend (who of course have disguised themselves).
When you really take this libretto so death-serious, than you take also serious, that the two ladies don't recognize their boyfriends 'because they are disguised''. Come on, the whole story is obiously meant humorously, with a wink.
The best Cosi by the best cast ever. The blu ray available on UK Amazon. I'm glad to see that both segments were included
