Recently came out of the boutique rabbit hole and after a long long time (years) of endless OD pedal purchases I think I finally found ‘my’ sound. Only happened once I took my KOT off and replaced it with a Boss SD-1 and The Dane. I’d been sceptical of a lot of UA-camrs signature gear upto that point, but having tried a early demo model, that Thorpy himself was plugging at a trade show, it always stayed with me until I recently snagged one at a more sensible price. @@mchalespermanentbrewMy favourite drive pedal is the OD-3. Super transparent. I sold all my pedals when I went totally digital with my HX Effects years ago, but if I could have only one pedal is would be the Boss OD-3
John Mayer recently made headlines when one of his Dumbles went down during a live performance. The headline was the fact that literally as soon as it went down his tech ran out there and immediately replaced it...with another Dumble. Some guys have all the luck...(except for the fact that one of his Dumbles blew up) LOL!
The one word i always use to describe the Dumble sound is overtones. They are always harmonically rich and when you hold a note it always goes into this really nice feedback. The Cornerstone Gladio is an excellent example. These pedals sound great.
The lower gain settings sound pretty good , but the higher gain reminds me of a spitting camel !, to me, it doesn’t sound any better than other boutique pedal at a fraction of the price!
so these seem to use the same knobs that are on my Cornerstone Gladio Double Preamp Pedal, you cannot read them on stage under stage lights, so be prepared to get the sharpies out, home use, absolutely fine - talking about the silver knobs
Most dumble style pedals are attempting to duplicate specifically Robben Fords overdrive special, and from what I hear from these pedals it sounds like a fatter more compressed tubescreamer type tone
I've owned two ethos overdrives (one with a 30watt amp), an original Zendrive (pre Lovepedal), Amplified Nation Big Bloom and Alpha drive. The Big Bloom was based on the Shin's Dumbloid circuit and sounded b****y awful, as did the Dumbloid in this video. It was brittle and the gain sounded cheap and artificial. The ethos pedals live were a nightmare with all those controls and options. The sound was fine but I still maintain its a studio tool than a live solution where you might want to make corrections on the fly. The Alpha drive was simple, a bit dull and uninspiring. For me, the straight forward and iconic Dumble tonality was best captured in the Zendrive. I have never regretted passing on the other pedals, but selling the Zendrive was a daft move and it's going to be resolved soon enough when I get a secondhand example. If you like the Dumble tone, it's best to head for something that doesn't sound fizzy and harsh under gain (the Zendrive can also suck, but has a more pleasing tone and gain stage to these ears thats easily dialled in, making it more usable. The Shin version is revealed in this video as overpriced, buzz saw sounding, nasal and harmonically unpleasant. I know theres a lot who'll probably disagree but even the reviewers are struggling to say nice things about these boxes. Their expressions almost give the game away on several occasions, too.
Completely agree with the Shin's Dumbloid. One thing though for anyone purchasing that pedal, If you have a clean amp (Twins/Deluxe/Two-Rock), Dumbloids won't work with those as well as it would with something like a Marshall (better if you could put it in the effects loop but if not also, it'll sound close to an authentic sound than mushy with some shrill/artificial notes in there). I experimented a lot with Shin's pedals (signal chain, series/parallel in a wet/dry setup, different amps, etc) but nothing worked as good as a Marshall or Mesa-Boogie (again, best in the fx loop).
I agree that the Dumbloid sounded like crap ... I have the Ethos and Zen v2 w tube and love them both... Both blow the Dumbloid away.. What was killer is if you stacked the Ethos and Zen drive together or any good drive pedal in front of the Zen..Straight love Homey !
For around 200 there s the Unobtanium today. A Klon boost/overdrive and a SSS/ODS A type amp driver klone. I love the dynamics, openess and type of drive it delivers. And these two, even three giants in one? Maybe that s for you?
Absolutely, I have the Ethos, original Zendrive and Van Weelden on my board, all 3 are fantastic overdrives. The Van Weelden drive is thicker ,wouldn't part with any of them.
I think it was Mick Taylor who said there's no suc thing as 'a dumble tone' because every amp was handbuilt to what the buyer wanted. Love the sound of the pedal though, interesting that he didn't feel the need for gimmicks like an actual valve in there.
Wtf! I dont get it? Sounds like any damn clean amp. Its full of shit hype. If you can play or not. Not a piece of gear. I could listen to pete play for days through any guitar or amp. It's his playing skill not the gear.😁
Bingo! Which is why I went for the Gladio Double instead. They don't claim that their preamp SOUNDS like a Dumble because there's no single "Dumble" sound. Instead, their preamp has a Dumble "feel..." whatever that means. LOL
Exactly. However, there are a few manufacturers that have gotten access to multiple original Dumbles and have come up with pedals that replicate the sound of those specific ones. (ie, Shin, Vertex, Ethos, etc)
Played threw a few Dumbles . Played threw just about everything since I started in the middle seventies . The pros who I met that did the same all agreed we liked LOUD STIFF UNFORGIVING ICE PICK SOUNDS . I still love the Dumble sound, surprised anyone under 50 does. Howard himself has changed over the years , these days he hotrods a fail proof more traditional fender tone. (Joe Bonamassa, Kenny Wayne Sheppard, Clapton all playing newly Dumblized Fenders ). The JBL 120 was the Best speaker in the 70s. When the kids gonna bring that baby back? ( The one with the metal dust cone that you heard on every classic tune). Always felt Howard was just ripping off Randall Smith's Boogie Like all the others since anyway.
If you don’t want to pay $600-700 for a Shin Dumbloid, the Vertex SSS-SRV pedal was also modeled off 6 original Dumbles they got to test, and that pedal is ‘only’ about $250.
I've been lucky to enough to play a few of these. Really cool, great sounding pedals! I work at Distinctive Guitar in the US and we carry them. As always, love the video! Great playing. You guys are awesome.
Have you ever played a J Rockett Dude pedal? It's their version of a Dumble and other J Rockett pedals I've played have been awesome. So I was just curious about that one.
I've heard many top guitarists play through Dumble amps and NONE of them sound the same, they sound like THAT PLAYER playing through a Dumble. So is there really a "Dumble sound"? Robben Ford sounds the same regardless of what amp he's using. Danish Pete would sound good playing through some crappy solid state amp that fell off the trash truck on the way to the landfill. :-)
Not a massive fan of these pedals. Compared to a Hermida Audio Zendrive 1 & 2... they're lacklustre and honestly don't sound that brilliant. Especially for that price.
The original ODS was built for Robben Ford. There is a video on UA-cam where Robben talks about his original Dumble and how it came to be, which I was fortunate to play. I feel that the mystique is far greater than the actual amp. I was seriously thinking of getting one. At that time a Steel String Singer was $5,000.00 which was super expensive for an amp then. When I got a call that I could come and play Robben's I couldn't get there fast enough. Even back then they had the mystique. I was really disappointed as I personally didn't care for it as it didn't get clean enough and I played it for about 4 hours. The edge of breakup tone was great though. That said all Dumbles are custom made to what the person who buys one is looking for. I've only seen two. The one I mentioned and another one that came into a friend of mine's shop to get repaired. He pulled the chassis out and it had all this black goop all over the circuit. Impossible to repair. He called the guy up and told him he'd have to send it back to Dumble to get it fixed. I seriously wonder how many people who 'want' a Dumble have ever actually played one.
Before he switched to the all vintage Fender amps when he began the Three Kings tour, Joe Bonamassa was a Dumble guy. He had like 8 of them and sold them all. For me, that was the Holy Grail of guitar tone for years. I went to a guitar show and one of the dealers had a Dumble from Joe's collection and had a price tag of $130,000. I asked if I could finance it at a $1/week for 130,000 weeks. He said he would consider it. Haven't heard back from him yet...
Great Video. When Dr. Dumble is doing his amps they have to stand on a pentagram in the productionline. I d love to watch a video about Pedal Pawn and Jext Telez pedals.
the dumble amp could big the biggest joke on music...a amp worth 50-100k$ 2nd funnest is the tube screamer at 900$ next when or were is robin fords records sales i mean evh the 5150 amps are gona be worth 500k$ the old fenders clapton played 1 mil?based on tone and record sales..all stick to old jmp or jcm two of most cloned amps for a reason.. but in the real world of tone and price
Cool to see you demo some of the less common pedals from Shin's, like the MkI. I think you could get better results if you tweaked the amp more for the pedals, and stop playing into crystalline clean amps. Every dirt pedal sounds better through a warmed up amp that is either on the verge of breakup, or mildly breaking up. The TS variant probably needed some good breakup in the amp to really sing. I have seen many Dumbloid videos where it does more of the smooth Dumble, liquid OD thing than what you guys came up with, which was more of the overdriven Fender tone. Still, a nice demo and thanks for doing it.
I had the opportunity to play a Dumble once owned by Jackson Browne at a local music store. The biggest thing I came away with was the blooming of the notes. Not a sharp raspy distortion but a smooth blossom of the note. Very different from a lot of the Dumble pedals out there.
I wonder if the amp was the wrong one to test these pedals with. They all sounded very fuzz-like to me. The dumbloid had some interesting things going on in jazz mode. I have heard "dumble" clones many times and didn't seem that pedal was close to what I'm familiar. I wonder what version of a dumble it was trying to replicate
The Dumbloid sounds more like a fuzz or pi when it’s pushed. Sounds better with singular notes rather than chords. Reminds me of the Simble from Mad Professor.
I think I got the exact snake comp that’s sitting on the table unless andertons ordered multiple of the exact color, which isn’t usually the case with shins music lol, I bought it used on reverb but it has andertons on the box and is from this time period 😂
This sounds great! Although, I have my Cornerstone Gladio and I'll stop my Dumble pursuit there. It's so good. Oh, and I have a Ceriatone ODS on order so I guess I am speaking out of the other end. Have a very Happy New Year to all at Anderton's!
i have the gladio and the ceriatone ods and i just bought this shin dumbloid. i want to see if it's better than the gladio. i also have a two rock custom reverb signature.
Dumble is a marketing genius. He makes amps just like others do. Except he pretends his are made so much more different and special with magic goop. Schematics for amps are not all that different depending on features. That’s why amp tech’s can work on different amps because the tech is not that different from one to the other. IMHO 🤷🏼♂️ On the other hand JB and R Ford probably have better ears than I do so maybe there’s something there?
I’m not dumb Dumbo worship guy but clearly a thing going with them Not worth the money but What I know is some have a solid state rectifying section which adds to the more immediate response to the note/notes played There is less 3D feeling compared to a fender You can’t hide playing it as much the soft 3D sound of a blackface fender is enjoyable and helps that Ever play a Roland jazz? Dumble is a further tweaking of that fender sound to fit particular players styles
Rubber drawers- capt. may be on to something there. But think of the slapping sounds when you fart- either that or you've got a huge bubble on your bum, a stinky bubble no one around you wants to burst. LOL_ I can just see someone walking really carefully, trying to maintain the bubble until they exit the bedroom. But hey- this would allow you to deposit your farts wherever you chose to. You could save it for the bus or that elevator ride up to the floor you work on. See- we're back to it being a good idea again. Purple, rubber, underwear- with little yellow cow heads on them. That's a really specific image Huh- that's because a girl I "knew" once, or twice maybe, one night had on purple panties with little yellow cow heads on them. I will never forget that- why it struck me as hilarious I have no idea but- it did. What an odd choice- and who made them- "Yeah, this is what women want, purple panties with little yellow cow heads on them." She was a strange bird- I left when she got into the whole gothic, vampire thing- wtf? Good looks only go so far ladies- how far? Just a little past purple panties with little yellow cow heads on them- weren't you paying attention?
I have read the contract. You had to swear you would not have anyone else but him to work on it. You have to pay a 50% deposit and if you contacted him, you would forfeit your deposit and he would not finish your amp. It was an odd contract.
This pedal sounds like a fuzz to me. Not that there is anything wrong with fuzz, but I have never heard a dumble sound that way (but I have never played one).
No two dumbbells were built or sound alike every double that Alexander did was designed for the player and they were often based off of different base models so how can anyone say they can recreate a dumble pedal
must admit I didn't like any, maybe the first with proper sweep setting would be closest to my liking but captain just turned it off when he found my sweet spot. Anyway, it sounds to me close to Cream fat sound I never liked. But that is me. And it is not sour grapes thing 😉
I don’t get what’s so great/unique about this dumble sound. You can get it with any good guitar, any decent valve amp and a Klon / Klon clone (I have a RYRA and a Tumnus Deluxe among others). Am I missing something? Don’t get me wrong, I’m sure a Dumble in the flesh is a different gravy but…
Yup. Put any good klone in front of any decent Dumblish pedal … and then determine what Dumble sounds you like then tweak to get there from that point. I’m finding that everybody who likes Dumble has a specific thing about the tone that they like. Gotta find the pedal that gets close to the Dumble sound that one likes. So many ‘Dumble sounds’ out there.
I've got a dumbloid /feedloid by Ryan in Arizona. Its pretty identical. Interestingly it has clipping modes for Timmy and tubescreamer and what you notice is the DUMBLE tone is very UN compressed and fuzzy/narly compared to the others. I think the general assumption is it has to be the smoothest and most compressed - not so... Quite hard and unforgiving on anything but high gain. And all the better for it
Yuck. Usually like D tones but this sounds awful. Might sound great in a band setting though. Sounds like it would cut through really well. Edit: around 13:00 I started liking it

The Dumbloid sounds more like a fuzz or pi when it’s pushed. Sounds better with singular notes rather than chords. Reminds me of the Simble from Mad Professor.
Roben Ford uses an Hermida Audio Zen Drive when he cannot have his Dumble with him. The Zen drive is now made by Love Pedals.
How is the ceriatone? I have just ordered a gladio
The Ceriatone is awesome! Huge sounding amp, with crystal cleans and the best amp overdrive! @@mtb_3930
If rather get a dumble inspired amp for the price of this pedal + a hot rod deluxe.
I've never heard the appeal of a Dumble, it sounds just like a driven Fender amp.
The appeal is being able to say you have a Dumble, and no one else does, therefore you are now a better guitar player than everyone else.
Dumbly is a genius selling the same shit to people for big bucks…
@Honoré Pere lol no one, nobody, no other person
Dumble is a marketing genius. He makes amps just like others do. Except he pretends his are made so much more different and special with magic goop. Schematics for amps are not all that different depending on features. That’s why amp tech’s can work on different amps because the tech is not that different from one to the other. IMHO 🤷🏼♂️ On the other hand JB and R Ford probably have better ears than I do so maybe there’s something there?
I’m not dumb Dumbo worship guy but clearly a thing going with them
Not worth the money but
What I know is some have a solid state rectifying section which adds to the more immediate response to the note/notes played
There is less 3D feeling compared to a fender
You can’t hide playing it as much the soft 3D sound of a blackface fender is enjoyable and helps that
Ever play a Roland jazz?
Dumble is a further tweaking of that fender sound to fit particular players styles
Yup sounds like a good pedal. Idk what a Dumble sounds like but cool
Status Quo in a box 😍
my lord , sounds like .................... every overdrive pedal does .
Not a fan to be honest!
Ones of Stevie's first electric guitars was a telecaster!
For a good demo of a real Dumble check out a vid by your old mate Mick Taylor.
SRV's Dumble was used with Marshall and Fender amps on state. It was 150 watts and he used it for pristine clean.
My mom was a strong woman. Raising Dumbells and all.
In addition this sounded like a resemblance of fuzz but T-Rex MUDHONEY has it since mid 90s
Screamerloid*
A modded Tubescreamer for $600. The hype people buy into…no wonder they goop the boards.
I find these Dumble pedal videos kind of useless without a Dumble in the room to compare it to….??? Maybe an impossible task but just my 2.
Cool... so it's basically a 100-dollar Tube Screamer sold for 900 dollars. Awesome!
Tube screamer mixed with an Eric Johnson fuzz face is that pedal lol 🤷♂️
dumbles do overdrive but sound like butter... like marshall and fender had an illegitimate child
I heard that the albino unicorns refused to rock out on anything but a dumble, it’s actually why they went extinct.
Thank you boys, Mister Pete and Mister Lee for the the entertaining uploads; you both have plenty of “loads” ; ) wink wink
No two dumbbells were built or sound alike every double that Alexander did was designed for the player and they were often based off of different base models so how can anyone say they can recreate a dumble pedal
Have you guys ever tried the Wampler Euphoria ?
Great video 👍🏻
Really these pedals don't sound like any Dumbles. But go ahead spend your money.😅
Complete waste of money……sounds like a ton of other drive pedals paired with an eq……
Haha then you say the same that’s like octave fuzz lol
Meh, they sound like basic overdrive pedals to me
I bet old Shin's had the black goop off 🧐more than once..
The DumbledAwe
Trex sound is like octave fuzz no?
Not impressed even at least!. Warm audio warm drive is much better
Stevie Ray did "House is Rockin" with a tele.
You never tried Demon Pedals Kondo Shifuku Overdrive so far. It's the best Dumblestyle Overdrive Pedal you can get your hands on!
must admit I didn't like any, maybe the first with proper sweep setting would be closest to my liking but captain just turned it off when he found my sweet spot.
So many ‘Dumble sounds’ out there.
sounds like any $100 fuzz pedal.
Pete could play a broom stick thought a can and make it sound great!
Bonjour de Bretagne !
Is Pete going to the Gym?
You look like a K-pop guitarist now!!!😄
I've got a dumbloid /feedloid by Ryan in Arizona. And all the better for it
Hmmm,. £379 sounds like a whole lot for pedals that sound like other pedals.
Yuck. Usually like D tones but this sounds awful. Might sound great in a band setting though. Sounds like it would cut through really well. Edit: around 13:00 I started liking it
