They're one of those bands who produced GREAT stuff in their latter years, yet had some GOLD shit going on in their earlier years. Pure Guava and Chocolate and Cheese are two must-have:s - When everything else in your life is going bad, you'll still have those two albums. (And when you find someone who understand that greatness, never let them go)
Effing Eh!! "The Pod" and "God/Ween/Satan" are .....humanity hasn't evolved to the point where both albums will (in the future) be viewed as absolute classic rock albums
I love La Cucaracha but there's an element of nostalgia there for me. I remember hitchhiking around vancouver island as a teenager with my friend. We were super stoned driving through these crazy geysers and mountains and the guy giving us a ride was listening to the album. When it got to Your Party the vibe was so odd I had to ask what it was. I forgot for a long time and went looking for the song when my friend I was travelling with passed away years later. Some of my favorite ween songs are on that record. Anyways hope you liked my little story. Fun vid!
If you ever listen to the pod again do it when you have a super bad cold or feel sick, idk what it is about the pod but whenever I put it on when I feel sick or have a cold it becomes one of the best albums in there discography for me!! Very cool video I love see what other people talk about Ween
I came out of a Coma after 17 days when my best friend played "The Argus " next to my hospital bed. So that's my miracle drug. But, after I woke up the POD was the album I wanted to listen to the most ... while f#ck'n with all the dials on my turn table. You can listen to it 100s of different ways. You can play it like an instrument its self.
Ween is becoming one of my favorite bands. I’m actually seeing Ween live for my first time in July. They’re so musically diverse. If I had to choose a favorite album itd have to be Pure Guava.
I understand your pain, God ween Satan is easily one of my top 3 albums of all time. The rest of the brown trilogy is also amazing but like you can't beat the album that has an extremely chill reggae song immediately followed by "LET ME TELL YOU ABOUT THE FUCKING BITCH DEANER!"
ween are one of the few bands that i can say ruined my life forever as they changed my view on what music could be, such an amazing band, great video too 👍
Great video. Very rare to see a well edited/written Ween video essay so this was really nice to watch! I think for The Pod, it's good to know the context behind how the album was made as it helps to bring your mindset into how Dean and Gene were feeling at the time and DEFINITELY helps you understand why the album sounds the way it does. Once I really started to think about what they were going through, the album just clicked for me and now it's my absolute favourite out of their first three albums (my favourite used to be Pure Guava).
weirdly it took me quite a few tries to really enjoy white pepper, but I find that weens sad songs are my favourite and she's your baby is just really good. Their demos are good too, eulogy for david anderson is heartbreaking and song like kim smoltz and koko are burned into my brain. Theres so much variety yet its all very "ween" la cucaracha is their worst, its not bad just entirely forgettable, ironically it feels more like a b side/demo compilation than shinola does.
She's Your Baby is probably my favorite song. It's light but full of darkness. The line, "A million layers of crust and deposit/ Blanket the seasons and bury the reasons/ You told her that this was for good" has haunted more than one of my relationships. Freeman is a McCartney-tier songwriter and it shows here.
The Mollusk is one of my all-time favorite albums-- I love it so much. I love the nautical themes, it's so jaunty and weird and just like. It feels great in my ears. I love the country album and I just think they're such a fun band for how weird and experimental they are, and it just seems like they have fun playing.
La Cucaracha had a few really good tracks. Fiesta, Blue Balloon, Your Party, and Object are my favorites from that. My favorite album is The Pod, but that might be because it's the first album that I listened to in full and I listened to it on repeat in my car.
Here are my favorite songs from each Ween album. GodWeenSatan: Fat Lenny The Pod: Pork Roll Egg And Cheese Pure Guava: Don't Get 2 Close (2 my Fantasy) Chocolate and Cheese: Voodoo Lady 12 Golden Country Greats: Mister Richard Smoker The Mollusk: Cold Blows The Wind White Pepper: Even If You Don't Craters of the Sac: Big Fat Fuck Quebec: I Don't Want It Shinola Vol. 1: Did You See Me The Friends EP: I Got to Put That Hammer Down La Cucaracha: Sweetheart In The Summer
I’m glad you mentioned falling out, It’s my favorite song of all time. There is just a feeling that it gives me that no other song has been able to recreate.
I got into Ween very similarly to you. About 13 years ago I heard a song from them and couldn't get it out of my head. I don't remember which one - probably Boys Club. I then got my hands on all of their albums and listened to the entire catalog. I was amazed at their range and have been a fan ever since.
"Chariots of Fire" is the background instrumental to Japanese Cowboy you're looking for. 12 Golden Country Greats is my 3rd favorite Ween album. Quebec and Mollusk are tied for 1&2. I grew up in TX and spent a lot of time in sparcly populated west Texas. Ween songs were covered frequently by weird ass underground country. Also listen to The Weery Boys, The Red Elvises, and The Doodlin Hogwalops. I heard their lead singer play a solo version of "Waving my Dick in the Wind" at around 2am, in a rich land developer's kitchen to a crowd of 30. It was intense. When there was a real good feeling 'about 'ol Jimmy Wilson I almost cried. "Help me Scrape the Mucus off my Brain" is a lullaby I put the kids to bed with a lot. That, "Exactly Where I'm At", and "The Argus ".
Awesome video about the greatest band that will ever grace this or any other universe! Thanks so much for putting it together - very well done! Please give The Pod and White Pepper more listens I promise you will love them.
Ween is a completely different band when playing live, a lot of songs from from their brown trilogy (especially The Pod) and chocolate and cheese sound way too cool and sometimes better than the original recording.
On their Paintin The Town Brown album they have liner notes for each song and they say they pretty much realized that it was the same melody so they would end the song by going into Chariots of Fire live.
youn might know this by now considering that this video is 11 months old, but God Ween Satan was sort of a 'compilation' of the songs they wrote up until that point, so lots of songs were written years before it was released when they were just teenagers, which imo makes songs like Birthday Boy just so much more impressive :]
The first time i heard ween, i think was '91 and they remain my favorite band. Especially when you and your pals are listening to Black Jack, wearing headphones and inhaling wippits.
A little fun fact that you may or may not have known, but when Les from primus tried out for Metallica after cliff passed away (because he loves Metallica) they told him that he was too good for them and that theyd hold him back. I also enjoy ween and glad hes getting more recognition. This video is awesome. Keep it up.
Only thing I would say is that it is a different experience growing with the artists. You talked a lot about connecting with them in their work they did in their twenties, and that was around the same age I was when I discovered them. However, what's cool is seeing how their sound reflected where they were at a various stages of life. I've been listenting to them for about 20 years now and I can understand how much tastes and interests shift over time, making their work over a 27 year span an organic growth of a highly experimental band pressing the limits of the styles they loved every step of the way. I love the raw angsty brown sound of their youth, but I also love their more polished tightly constructed tracks that still manage to insert wacky and zanely moments along the way, even on La Cucaracha. The Fruit Man song would be right at home on the Pod. Ween is my favorite band, and I gotta say The Argus is probably the most epic and awesome song I've ever heard.
Haha love how you singled out The Goin Get Tough From the Getgo. I listened to Pure Guava and GodWeenSatan for many years before getting into Ween's other stuff but it's all pretty great. Would highly recommend catching them live if you haven't yet. You should do Primus next!
I'm shocked there was no mention of Wayne's Pet Youngin' off of their debut record. That track features the greatest psychedelic guitar riff and solo of all time.
THIS VIDEO MAKES ME SO HAPPY i love ween thank you so much :) Have ypu listened to Z rock hawaii? Its a ween project with memebers of the japanese noise rock band the Boredoms. It was recorded around 1994 and released 1997 Its really good. Theres also the friends ep that has the song Slow Down Boy which is arguably one of he best ween songs just hidden away There is also the HUGE amount of absolutely amazing demos by Ween, they always scrap their best stuff its a shame
First video I’ve seen of your’s and genuinely super well put together and written. You have a very clear, didactical style, which I enjoy a lot. Keep up the good content!
I wish I liked ween's music, but I've had ocean man specifically stuck in my head since I was 5 from the spongebob movie (they also made the song about tying your shoes)
Def get a chance to watch many of the full live shows on UA-cam, it made a lot of their songs I didn’t care for at first my favorite. With that being said, I know they have a lot of songs but I’m alittle sad you didn’t shout out Frank, it’s a ween classic!
i watched a lot of them when i was getting clips for this video, i really enjoyed what i saw, i really want to get the live albums on vinyl. and i totally should have mentioned frank! sorry to disappoint there
Ween easily became one of my favorite bands the second it hit my ears. It’s one of those artist that the more you listen to and have more of an open mind, the more you like the things you didn’t before, because you get them now. It all makes sense. Anyways listen to CAN very highly recommended..
You'll be delighted to know that there are thousands of never officially released Ween songs floating around on the internet. These albums you reviewed are just the type of the ice berg. Ween Archived is still releasing new and remastered stuff till this very day. Majority of it coming from the Brown era so you'll love to explore it for sure! I have a playlist featuring some rare songs for some quick access.
i am aware of the demos and unreleased tracks and have listened to a lot of it! i’m planning to do a part 2 video covering all of that will definitely check out your playlist, thanks !!
I cant believe you didn't mention sarah off of pure guava! It's such a beautiful song and the fact it comes out of basically nowhere, right in the middle of all the brown on the rest of the album is amazing.
Ween is seriously one of my favorite bands EVER. Their demos and outtakes are some of the most incredible songs I’ve ever heard. They’re so worth checking out. I see Ween and Primus being paired together a lot due to their unique styles and lyrics. If you haven’t listened to Primus’ discography, I highly recommend doing so.
ive been into ween since i was 15 and in all my time have never run into anyone who said like me that one of their favorites off the first album is Nicole. so big dubs big respeckt to you for that taste
@@stelperry its one of my all time top ones for sure top 5 probably, always really spoke to me and i love reggae. THAT is how white reggae should be done
This was so well done...I absolutely agree with your thoughts and I have to agree with, (almost) all of them!! I'd have absolutely mentioned, "Transdermal Celebration" as being the best song from Quebec. And La Cucaracha grows on you - I guarantee! Particularly Dean Ween's "With My Own Bare Hands".
i said in the video that i really wanted to like it right? it just comes down to taste, can’t force it falling out is a top 10 track of theirs i think but yeah, don’t know what to tell you
La Cucaracha feels like Ween being weird for the sake of being weird, because they think they have to be, without having any creative juices left in the tank
I also think the songs work amazingly well on their own but not as an album. Lullaby and Blue Balloon are amazing songs outside the context of the entire album, but they're pretty underwhelming when paired with everything else
I love ween so much. I'd say my favorite album is The Pod with Pure Guava as a close second. Also, I used to be a La Cucaracha hater, but a few months after I listened to it I did a relisten and holy shit. La Cucaracha is like my 3rd favorite.
Im sure someone pointed this out but Japanese cowboy sounds a lot like chariots of fire. Also ween has like a hundred other outtakes, the Quebec demos "Caesar" have some of my favorite ween tracks
Few things, first I do think there is a great song on La Cucaracha ‐ Your Party - I think is one of Ween's funniest songs because it nails the comedy in the mundane which I think is underrated, much like how Weird Al nailed the same comedic vibe in Stuck in the Drive-Thru. Also i recommend listening to All Request Live if you haven't. While it's not an official studio release it is basically the closest thing to it. The version of Demon Sweat on there is absolutely haunting and Where the Cheese Go is extra funny when you learn the history which is was written for a Pizza Hutt ad (which they immediately rejected - but what did you expect from a Ween jingle) and is why it goes basically totally off the rails about a minute in.
so many people love your party but i just don’t feel the same. if i had to pick one from LC that i like post making this video, it would be blue balloon. love the all request album! demon sweat is great, my favourite version is from cats cradle and so is where the cheese go! i just ordered the tour shirt that says it, originally planned to buy it at the seattle show that never happened :(
Ok discovered this video and your channel. Im in love with you, your channel and this video. Great editing and a fun personal dive into one of my favourite bands. You wear your love of cute twee aesthetic and art on your sleeve and its amazing. Youre an insanely beautiful person. Keep making art.
12 Golden Country Hits is a master piece. When it came out I was not sure what to think of it, but as I've grown older I think it's some of their best song writing.
Love seeing others discover Ween. It’s such a fun ride. Great video btw- I’m right there with you on their first few brown albums being my favorite. I would highly recommend doing an “Of Montreal” deep dive, due to their similarities with Ween-In the sense that they both cover pretty much every genre/change genres mid-album, sometimes mid-song! Of montreal also has a vast, ever-evolving discography, starting from the the nineties and still releasing albums today. .. so it might take a while, but will be well worth your time.
These goofballs got me through getting cheated on via quebec, and they might just be my new favortite band ever now So thank you gener and deaner, i love you both
For me it was the UA-camr Cactus Malpractice who got me into Ween :) Edit: Interesting to see how different others tastes are! I love White Pepper and I'm warming up to some of the lesser good songs, and GodWeenSatan is at the bottom of my list because it was too long and abrasively punk for me. My favourite song is Someday because it reminds me of my other half and also how I felt about love as a child ❤ My least favourite is Mourning Glory I struggle to get through the whole thing 😂 But finding this band has been a true highlight of my 2023 honestly!
Excellently made video. "God Ween Satan" is definitely one of the best debuts of any band ever for many of the reasons explained, my #2 personally (after "The Pod" which I enjoy for its dark, muddy atmospheric sound). There's a fairly general consensus amongst fans that "La Cucaracha" is Ween's weakest record. I have more affection for "White Pepper" since it was the 1st album of theirs I heard and its softer aesthetic made it easier for someone used to more conventional mainstream music to gradually embrace Ween. I can see it being a letdown to someone who's listened to their riskier, more unique previous work. "Quebec" is one I come back to and appreciate more each time. Ween's been my favorite band for nearly 20 years and this a great video for new, curious listeners. Good job!
Wait. No mention of The Argus, the most sublime rock song ever written? Also: listen to the Live Albums Live in Chicago and Live at Stubbs (The browner of the two)
the argus didn’t really do it for me! still doesn’t. love live in chicago especially for voodoo lady and big jilm, my fav live album though is cats cradle ‘92
If you can track down a copy of Z-Rock Hawaii, I highly recommend adding that to the rotation. It's a collaboration between Ween and The Boredoms and it's amazing.
With ween i feel like you have to listen to each album for at least a year before forming an opinion on it - you glazed over the pod pretty quick - might be my favourite, "Molly" & "Pollo Asado" are so good. What did you think of "Mourning Glory" on Pure Guava?
i think that’s the case for a lot of artists! but the premise of this video was just first impressions a year later i have pretty much the same opinion of the pod, except i’ve fallen deeply in love with demon sweat and pork roll egg and cheese !! mourning glory isn’t really easy listening lol
@@stelperry normally I prefer distortion over clean sounds. However for Dr.Rock I feel like you can’t hear his vocals very well in the original and it really takes away from the energy
Really good video imo, i always find it funny how different people's ween "rankings" are, for example white pepper is my ~4th favorite album because i absolutely love the three opening songs, but godweensatan is among my least favorite because i find that its quantity over quality feeling and is too bloated (though we agree on la cucaracha and 12GCG being their worst). Btw, japanese cowboy apparently has the same melody as chariots of fire, thats why it seemed so familiar.
i considered GWS to be my favourite in this video mainly just based on the amount of songs i liked from it, but since this video i think my favourite album is choc&cheese for that exact thing of quality over quality. i wouldn’t say 12GCG is one of the worst, it’s a well done album! just very different
@@stelperry yeah, "worst" just meant among my least favourite, it's definitely a good album. Also nice that you turned around on chocolate and cheese, imo that's one of their absolute best albums (right next to Quebec and the mollusk)
you don't think the fucked jam is absolutely sick?? lol thnaks! i def have become an even bigger fan in the following months, i think they've become one of my all time most listened to artists on spotify! @@juancruzgarate9889

Ween is one of the few things in life where the fanbase is known to be good lol
Me too
I love when other people love when other people love ween
I agree, I don’t get along with Ween fans. That being said Ween is always been my favorite band.
I've only heard Ween's Quebec, and bought it instantly. Now I need to buy everything else...
You need to show it on your channel, love your videos

Another thing that makes ween great is the more you listen to songs or albums you don't like as much as others the more you start to appreciate them.
i’ve revisited the pod since this and i love it a lot more!
They both had Mono during a lot of The Pod recordings, if that helps put the album into perspective

Albino sunburned girl, Vallejo, cover it with gas and set it on fire, making love in the gravy... Just to name a few.
i am aware of the demos and unreleased tracks and have listened to a lot of it! i’m planning to do a part 2 video covering all of that
will definitely check out your playlist, thanks !!
Yes, our numbers are growing, just according to plan
I’m really impressed you listened to all these albums in 14 minutes!!
@@antoninmp yeah man
Sketches Of Winkle makes my winkle sketch.
If you haven’t listened to Primus’ discography, I highly recommend doing so.
ive been into ween since i was 15 and in all my time have never run into anyone who said like me that one of their favorites off the first album is Nicole. so big dubs big respeckt to you for that taste
i think it’s probably my favourite ween song now!
And so many live albums to check out too. Part of the experience
love cats cradle ‘92 !!! so good
Always love seeing someone discovering Ween!
Mollusk, chocolate and cheese, white pepper and Quebec are masterpieces.
You’re really missing the boat on white pepper
i said in the video that i really wanted to like it right? it just comes down to taste, can’t force it
falling out is a top 10 track of theirs i think but yeah, don’t know what to tell you
Ween is the greatest band of all time. Especially live. Great video mang!
La Cucaracha feels like Ween being weird for the sake of being weird, because they think they have to be, without having any creative juices left in the tank
this is a really good point
I also think the songs work amazingly well on their own but not as an album. Lullaby and Blue Balloon are amazing songs outside the context of the entire album, but they're pretty underwhelming when paired with everything else
I love ween so much. I'd say my favorite album is The Pod with Pure Guava as a close second. Also, I used to be a La Cucaracha hater, but a few months after I listened to it I did a relisten and holy shit. La Cucaracha is like my 3rd favorite.
i just got into Ween last week. safe to say i am now a devoted weener.
Im sure someone pointed this out but Japanese cowboy sounds a lot like chariots of fire. Also ween has like a hundred other outtakes, the Quebec demos "Caesar" have some of my favorite ween tracks
Wild that someone can listen to the same discography and not mention any of your fave songs
honestly that’s what’s so unique about ween!
what are your favs? there’s definitely quite a few i now wish i mentioned
The version of Demon Sweat on there is absolutely haunting and Where the Cheese Go is extra funny when you learn the history which is was written for a Pizza Hutt ad (which they immediately rejected - but what did you expect from a Ween jingle) and is why it goes basically totally off the rails about a minute in.
so many people love your party but i just don’t feel the same. if i had to pick one from LC that i like post making this video, it would be blue balloon.
love the all request album! demon sweat is great, my favourite version is from cats cradle
and so is where the cheese go! i just ordered the tour shirt that says it, originally planned to buy it at the seattle show that never happened :(
great to watch a review thats not just "this is weeeird" awesome sause video
Ok discovered this video and your channel. Im in love with you, your channel and this video. Great editing and a fun personal dive into one of my favourite bands. You wear your love of cute twee aesthetic and art on your sleeve and its amazing. Youre an insanely beautiful person. Keep making art.
wow, this is probably the nicest and most thoughtful comment i’ve ever received
thank you so much!!!
12 Golden Country Hits is a master piece. When it came out I was not sure what to think of it, but as I've grown older I think it's some of their best song writing.
i agree
i wish i could go back in time and add a couple more songs from 12gch
i love help me scrape the mucus off my brain
Love seeing others discover Ween. It’s such a fun ride.
Great video btw- I’m right there with you on their first few brown albums being my favorite.
I would highly recommend doing an “Of Montreal” deep dive, due to their similarities with Ween-In the sense that they both cover pretty much every genre/change genres mid-album, sometimes mid-song!
Of montreal also has a vast, ever-evolving discography, starting from the the nineties and still releasing albums today. .. so it might take a while, but will be well worth your time.
thanks for the rec!
Awesome video mang. Hopefully I’ll see you at a show sometime
if they ever come back to vancouver!
These goofballs got me through getting cheated on via quebec, and they might just be my new favortite band ever now
So thank you gener and deaner, i love you both
I have listened to 95% Ween for the past two yeats
This is awesome
Look up the Freeman album, it's basically the epilogue to Ween's discography
Great video. Now, you just need to discover all of the demos and outtakes.
i have discovered as many as i think humanly possible haha, i have a video planned but not sure if it would be widely appealing
@@stelperry you'd be surprised. I think it would work.
For me it was the UA-camr Cactus Malpractice who got me into Ween :)
Edit: Interesting to see how different others tastes are!
One of my favorite bands ever!!!!! Great video!
thank you!
Good job!
wow thanks so much !! and for your insight as well. i’ve become a big pod fan post this video.
AWESOME VIDEO
So blessed to have been there for peak Ween. Granted, the peak was like 20 years, but I was there for 10 or 15 of them.
Greatest band ever❤
Wait. No mention of The Argus, the most sublime rock song ever written?
Also: listen to the Live Albums
Live in Chicago and
Live at Stubbs (The browner of the two)
the argus didn’t really do it for me! still doesn’t.
love live in chicago especially for voodoo lady and big jilm, my fav live album though is cats cradle ‘92
If you can track down a copy of Z-Rock Hawaii, I highly recommend adding that to the rotation. It's a collaboration between Ween and The Boredoms and it's amazing.
RAAAAAAAAAAAAAH I FUCKING LOVE WEEN
With ween i feel like you have to listen to each album for at least a year before forming an opinion on it - you glazed over the pod pretty quick - might be my favourite, "Molly" & "Pollo Asado" are so good.
What did you think of "Mourning Glory" on Pure Guava?
i think that’s the case for a lot of artists! but the premise of this video was just first impressions
a year later i have pretty much the same opinion of the pod, except i’ve fallen deeply in love with demon sweat and pork roll egg and cheese !!
mourning glory isn’t really easy listening lol
Dr. Rock sounds so good when it’s not overly distorted. The live version on Toronto is great
i actually really think the distortion is what makes it! but it sounds awesome live too yeah
Also nice that you turned around on chocolate and cheese, imo that's one of their absolute best albums (right next to Quebec and the mollusk)
ween are my jam
Listening to quebec and saying the fucked jam is a highlight is definitely interesting
loved the video tho! hopefully you have got even more into them since
you don't think the fucked jam is absolutely sick?? lol
thnaks! i def have become an even bigger fan in the following months, i think they've become one of my all time most listened to artists on spotify! @@juancruzgarate9889
Have you ever heard of a band called "Pond"? One of their songs " Artificial Turf" has a distinct Weenish vibe.
A Talking Heads deep dive would be quite interesting!
i gotta do it!
@@stelperry BRUH AINT NO WAY I GOT A RESPONSE!! This was an awesome video! Great job! Monique the Freak is easily in my top 5 of Ween's entire discography.
Ween is a great band and if i had to choose a bands discography on a desert island i would pick them due to the randomness of genres
Woman and man is one of the best seen songs in my opinion
heck yeah - thanks for this video
Gettijg this on my feed after their no more shows announcement
i had tickets for seattle :(
“I’m in Ween!”
“I’m in Ween, too!”
ween are cool
just wait until you get into their unreleased stuff (awesome video btw)
thanks! i checked out some of the stuff pre god ween satan before i made the vid but most def going to listen to more
8:12 Chariots of fire
Yeah. Me too. Ween is cool.
"Let's start from the beginning" - GodWeenSatan. Oh my sweet summer child.
The crucial squeegie lip is calling.
notice how the rest of the video is only their studio albums? you’d think there was a pattern was there huh.
@@stelperry craters of the sac deserved the review though
Ok, so if ur a fan, you gotta hear the live from Amsterdam (I think) where they play all of the STALLIONS in a row. Epic
"All Request Live" has all the Stallions on it, is that the one you mean? It was recorded in New Jersey, USA.
this video is rad
The first time I heard ween was on an LSD trip -pure guava; it was burned into my mind.
stella perry of karstcast patron fame making a video about ween? inch resting
ohmygod
